The 2024-25 Toronto Raptors season has officially tipped off on Sportsnet, and with it has come a partnership with a number of Canadian artists from around the country. Before it all began, Donnovan travelled to the network recording to chat with three of them: Choclair (3:23), Rochester AKA Juice (21:08), and Paris (34:33). He spoke with all three of them on their NBA and Raptors fandom, the evolution of their music, and what it means to collaborate with a major sports network in Sportsnet. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

I've been lucky enough to be invited onto ‘The Social' (@TheSocialCTV) a few times. Do you know the show? It's like ‘The View', but Canadian, with four dynamic hosts sharing fast-paced opinions in a raucous, bombastic, high-energy exchange. Producers hand you the topics of the day about 30 minutes before you go on — formed by that morning's early headlines — and then it's time to form an opinion and get ready to, no big deal, share it live with millions of people a few minutes later. Definitely one of the most challenging jobs I've ever had and I can't tell you how much I admire people like Melissa Grelo, Cynthia Loyst, Lainey Lui, and Jess Allen, who do it day after day. Since I'm guest-hosting it's usually me onstage with three women — while one's away — and we end up having full-on laugh attacks. Well, one day, early in the pandemic, during the “live from everybody's basement” era, I showed up ready to go on and discovered I was one of *two* guest hosts. The other was Jully Black! Canada's R&B Queen. I'd heard of her but when the camera started rolling I fell in love. She was dynamic, bombastic, full of love, full of energy, and in the virtual green room after the show I invited her on 3 Books. (I knew she was a book lover because she'd been on Canada Reads — “the Survivor of Books” — a couple years before.) Well, after a few years of planning we finally pulled off our long-awaited live and in-person recording of 3 Books — up in Markham, Ontario, an hour north of Toronto — inside the 24-hour, 365-day-a-year, 68,000-square foot sauna and bath house Go Place (@goplace_toronto). I had never been but Jully was a regular so we put on our checkerboard paper shorts and shirts and lounged on a couple curvy chairs before hitting record (and before hitting the hot and cold rooms afterwards.) I think you'll find this as fascinating a conversation as I did. Jully is a true icon — named one of ‘The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever' (CBC Music) with multiple singles reaching Top 10 pop, R&B, and dance music charts. She has sung for the Queen of England, she's been inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame, and, as you'll hear, she took the bold stance of changing the words to Canada's National Anthem on its largest global stage. Her activism wins praise, plaudits, and, yes, some poo-pooing, but if you know Jully — and you will soon if you don't! — she takes it all in stride and then she manifests another great day. She's somebody who is seemingly always vibrating on another level. Jully has been in the game for three decades, scoring her first record deal as a teenager, and collaborating with endless legends like Nas, Choclair, and Destiny's Child. She's an activist, award-winning musical theater star, community organizer, and much, much more. In this conversation Jully shares secrets of artistic longevity, thoughts behind her decision  to change the lyrics of ‘O Canada' at the NBA All-Star game, her definition of allyship, how we learn to forgive ourselves, what a ‘blanket ceremony' is, how we navigate the death of our parents, her 3 most formative books (of course), and much, much more… Let's flip the page into Chapter 126 now... --- You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/126 Leave us a voicemail. Each chapter discusses the 3 most formative books of one of the world's most inspiring people. Sample guests include: Brené Brown, David Sedaris, Malcolm Gladwell, Angie Thomas, Cheryl Strayed, Rich Roll, Soyoung the Variety Store Owner, Derek the Hype Man, Kevin the Bookseller, Vishwas the Uber Driver, Roxane Gay, David Mitchell, Vivek Murthy, Mark Manson, Seth Godin, Judy Blume and Quentin Tarantino. 3 Books is published on the lunar calendar with each of the 333 chapters dropped on the exact minute of every single full moon all the way up to April 26, 2040. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning show and is 100% non-profit with no ads, no sponsors, no commercials, and no interruptions. 3 Books has 3 clubs including the End of the Podcast Club, the Cover to Cover Club, and the Secret Club, which operates entirely through the mail and is only accessible by calling 1-833-READ-A-LOT. On the podcast this week, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine welcome David "Gordo" Strickland, one of the pioneers of hip-hop production and recording in Canada. He's an Indigenous, Toronto-born and based award-winning engineer, mixer, producer and DJ. Known for being behind the boards on iconic hip-hop and R&B records for over two decades, his work has graced seminal tracks by the likes of Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, EPMD, Keith Murray, Redman and Method Man, to records by ground-breaking Toronto hip-hop acts, including Drake, k-os, Ghetto Concept, Jelleestone, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, and Choclair. David's two most recent collaborative albums, Spirit Of Hip Hop (2020, Entertainment One) and Spirit Of Hip Hop: Elements (2022), highlights some of North America's hip-hop progenitors and innovative Indigenous artists alike to share an embodiment of the teachings, art, traditions, and music of the community, aligned with his Indigenous heritage. In this chat, David tells Mike about how he got his start and built his engineering skills, being thrown into the fire as a newbie on an album by Saukrates, and working his way through the industry from there.

Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we're joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty. What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical. Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. Our guest today is 4 time Juno Award winner and Canadian hip hop legend Choclair. @officialchoclair was one of the most successful Canadian rappers in the late '90s and early 2000s. He released his debut single, "Twenty-One Years", on his own independent label, Knee Deep Records, in 1995. He then went on to sign with Priority Records to release his classic debut album, "Ice Cold" in 1999, which went on to win the Juno Award for Best Rap Recording. He was also a part of the iconic Canadian anthem Northern Touch with fellow Canadian hip hop legends like the Rascalz, Checkmate, Kardinal, and Thrust. In 2018, Choclair and the other team members who recorded "Northern Touch" reunited to perform the song at the 2018 Juno Awards ceremony, which was an incredible moment in Canadian hip hop history. We connected over the internet with the Toronto legend to talk about the early days of Canadian hip hop, his recent release One Day Away, which is available wherever you stream music, and a lot more.

Hello and welcome to episode 35 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!Today’s guest is widely considered one of Toronto’s Hip Hop legends, Solitair’s many contributions have made an indelible impact on the Canadian urban music landscape, and the music industry as a whole. In 1999, at the age of 23, Solitair made his mainstream musical debut on Choclair’s first major label album, ‘Ice Cold’, producing 4 songs and featured on several others. The album went Gold (50,000 units sold) in less than 30 days. Though he saw great success in his previous releases, Solitair’s breakout came in 2001 when he released two iconic Canadian Hip Hop songs: “Bakardi Slang” by Kardinal Offishall - produced by Solitair with his unique style combining island music sensibilities with Hip Hop’s gritty urban soundscape and ‘Easy to Slip’ by Solitair - a song he wrote as an ode to fallen friends, which continues to be hailed as one of Canada’s greatest Hip Hop songs and received a Juno nomination for Best Rap Recording. As Solitair came into prominence as a highly sought after producer, he worked on albums by a number of Canadian heavyweights, including: Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, k-os, Maestro Fresh Wes’ and The Rascalz. With Kardinal, he has travelled the world performing as part of his world renowned stage show.In 2014 Soliair and three other producers partnered up on the recording studio, 4Sound Media. Since taking the reins, he’s been recording, mixing, mentoring, and collaborating with many of Hip Hop's most talented emerging artists, and continues to work on adding more great songs to his musical legacy. After 20-years in the music industry, Solitair gives back to the community of Toronto by speaking to at-risk youth in high schools and has recently been working with F-You: The Forgiveness Project who are working with young men currently serving time in the Canadian prison system. With the founder of the F-You project, Tara Muldoon, Solitair is working on a podcast and that is how I came to meet this wonderful talent and invited him on the show. For links & transcript visit http://singdanceactthrive.com/035 It was so great to hear from Solitair, he is so nice and humble. I am a big fan of our Canadian hip hop pioneers and Kardinal and Maestro are also on my list of artists that I have to get on the show this year. I’ve met Kardinal quite a few times and he is also very nice and humble. Oh and Michee Me, I met her before too…oh maybe this is my new thing. I’ll call out people I want on the show on the show. If anyone has a connection to Questlove, Jimmy Jam or Ice-T hook me up! I have a ton of others but I’ll stick with hip hop for this episode. Oh and I meant to have Doodlebug from Digable Planets on the show since before this podcast even started so I’ll reach out to him again.

On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is Toronto hip-hop legend Choclair. Now this is a bucket list interview for me. The Toronto hip-hop scene that came from the late 1990s which also included Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates, and Maestro Fresh Wes, among many others, is so personally special to me. As someone who has frequented Toronto throughout my life, its like a second home to me. My goal is to get all those names I just named on this podcast and we are one down with Choclair. During our conversation, we reminisce about the Toronto hip-hop scene from the 90s, along with breaking down his career during albums like 1999's Ice Cold, 2002's Memoirs of Blake Savage. We also get into the lessons he's learned over the years in his storied music career, his beginnings in music, the aesthetics of Toronto as a city and its artistry, and so much more! Each episode, the guest is asked to suggest someone from their life/career that should be on Fresh is the Word that would have good stories to tell. Choclair chose fellow Toronto hip-hop pioneer Maestro Fresh Wes. Hailed as “The grooviest band north of the border” (Live for Live Music), the Toronto based funk family have been blazing a trail through the North American music scene leaving only happy hearts and dancing feet in their wake. The combination of Yanick Allwood (keyboards & vocals), Jaime Rosenberg (drums), Justin Bontje (bass) and Phil Tessis (guitar) results in an infectiously fun show, as well as virtuosity and beauty that will challenge your musical mind. After Funk’s sound and hard work has not gone unnoticed; being selected as the Electric Forest’s Instrumental Forester in 2014 earned them two sets at the festival and they have served as support for Walk Off The Earth, Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, Dumpstaphunk, TAUK and more. The band has released 2 albums to help you prepare for the experience: ‘Til The Sun Comes Up features Canadian hip hop legend Choclair and earned over $10,000 in crowdfunding presales and their self-titled debut EP was mixed and mastered by Alan Evans of Soulive. Both albums promise to have you rocking out and singing along to catchy melodies and funky grooves. But if you truly want to find out what comes after the funk, you’ll just have to come experience it for yourself.

This week, things get crazy. Two very different musicians, Blitz and Cory Lamb. Blitz is a Canadian Rapper who represents the South East Asian community. In order to find an audience for his work, he had to travel to the UK, where he went from selling CDs on the street to getting signed to a label. Now he is back in Canada and working with Canadian hip hop legends of his youth, like Choclair and Solitair, so that he can help them gain new audiences all over the world. Oh yeah and did I mention when I called him, he said he was surfing the internet for porn? Cory Lamb is a Christian rocker who sounds like he should be on American Idol. For some reason, when I asked, he didn't want to talk about his underwear. Tracks played on the show... 1) Blitz "Can't Forget You" ** 2) Blitz, The Rhyme Book "Way I Shine" ** 3) Cory Lamb "Break the Cycle" 4) Cory Lamb "Light" ** ONLY Blitz tracks are CANCON

I went down to Psychedelic Soul Shack (Kinetik's radio show) two Saturdays ago and brought a crate of wax. Kinetik did his thing first which was absolutely ridicuous and then I did mine. If you're into records, breaks and basking in your own weirdness then Psychedelic Soul Shack is for you. It airs Saturdays 11 PM to midnight on CJUM 101.5 FM in Winnipeg, MTS Cable 718 in Manitoba and online at www.umfm.com/listenonline.
