Sekou joins us from Studio 8 for a performance and chat ahead of a show at the Olympia tonight.
Stroke survivor Sekou Writes gives a compelling inspirational interview. His situation unfortunately has a hint of familiarity to many, and yet his attitude and reaction to his pain is transformational to say the least. Sekou started a Health kick in order to change his life when a sudden stroke uprooted all his plans. He was an avid runner who did not drink, smoke and stayed relatively healthy. This health crisis came as a surprise to all, and needless to say it completely threw his life out of whack. I have no doubt that Sekou's warrior like attitude had everything to do with his boarder line miracles recovery process. Though he is currently still on the mend, he has completely superseded doctors expectations on a rapid path to recovery. At the time of this interview Sekou had already started running marathons. His inspirational journey is packed with multi layered messages of hope to so many of us. Enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rawle-d/message

1958 Ahmed Sekou Touré campaigned so that Guineans would vote "No" in a referendum on whether to adopt the new French constitution or reject it and opt for independence. As the first leader of independent Guinea, Touré focused on wide-ranging educational reform which included encourage sport for the masses at a grassroots level. Yet, after witnessing the success of Kwame Nkrumah's Black Stars, Touré decides that it's time to use football as a diplomatic tool. Cherif Souleymane, Petit Sory, Papa Camara, Bengally Sylla, Maxime Camara and N'Jo Lea are some of the names that end up comprising the great Guinean generation of 1972-1978, which was spurred by Touré's political philosophy. In episode 4 of the African Five-a-side podcast, we'll relive those golden years and trace over the Africa Cup of Champions Clubs triumphs and how they were instrumentalised by Touré and the PDG.

In this conversation we talk to Santi Elijah Holley about his recently published book An Amerikan Family: The Shakurs and the Nation They Created. A history of the political family that included Tupac, Assata, Afeni, Dr. Mutulu, Salahdeen, Lumumba, Zayd and many others. What does it mean to take the name Shakur? What were some of the key relationships and sites of politicization for these folks? Holley's book gets into many of these questions, and examines the radical organizing and political activity of many of the Shakurs and of their comrades like Sekou Odinga and Bilal Sunni-Ali. There are aspects of this book we appreciated as there's a lot of important history here that gets brought into one place. These figures are often looked at in isolation, in a depoliticized context, as icons or simulacra. In other places we read about them as individual figures in histories of formations like the Black Panther Party or the Republic of New Afrika. So we appreciated seeing them discussed in relation to one another and some of the events and people who shaped their political development. As you will see in this discussion both Josh and I also have our criticisms of this book and how it presents this history. As usual, we do not debate with the author here, but we do ask multiple critical questions about aspects of the book that we felt either did not do justice to the legacy of people being examined or do not help people see the New Afrikan Independence Movement as a living struggle that people still engage today in a variety of ways in various organizations. As always, we welcome further dialogue on that from folks who are involved in those movements if they wish to engage with us. We will also link some of our other discussions about that history and with people who struggle in the tradition of New Afrikan independence today. Most importantly today we want to uplift Baba Sekou Odinga who features prominently in this book, and prominently in the history of Black Liberation struggle in this country. He was recently hospitalized and has been released to a rehabilitation facility, but he needs our support. We are not going to plug our patreon this episode and instead ask that folks contribute to this fund for Immediate Relief Support for Sekou Odinga Other related links: Sekou Odinga episode Jamal Joseph episode Claude Marks episode Dhoruba bin Wahad episode Jalil Muntaqim episodes 1, 2 Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur on Sanyika Shakur Kamau Franklin and Kali Akuno Kamau Franklin on Liberated Zones Theory Stop Cop City discussions: 1 & 2 Free The Land!
