On this first episode of Random Encounter for 2025, Jono is missing, and it's up to the panel to find him!Just kidding; we aren't a semi-educational game from the 1990s. Jono has bronchitis this week, so it's up to the brand-new full-time host of Retro Encounter, Zach Wilkerson, to fill in for him!Joining Zach is Neal, who is chatting about the recent remake of one of the first RPG indie hits ever: Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated. Released on Xbox Live Arcade back in 2011, Zeboyd Games' original Breath of Death VII delivered a fun, retro-style JRPG with nostalgic 8-bit graphics. This remake updates the visuals to stunning 16-bit while also delivering a brand-new soundtrack from HyperDuck SoundWorks! Does this remake live up to the original?Audra is also joining the panel to chat about the Ace Attorney-inspired adventure Paper Perjury. With delightfully pixelated graphics and compelling mysteries galore, did Paper Perjury have Audra standing up, pointing her finger, and screaming "Objection?"Featuring: Zach Wilkerson, Audra Bowling, and Neal Chandran; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated ReviewBreath of Death VII: The Beginning ReviewPaper Perjury Review
Games that are pure parodies - ones that (mainly) target a single game from a competitor to emulate and lampoon - are relatively rare for a lot of reasons, but we scraped together enough to make them the subject of this week's Top 5. After that, we'll look at The Case of the Golden Idol's Xbox debut, the Xbox Game Pass price hike, 3DS's Puzzle Swap finally getting "beaten," and your favorite games starring playable monsters and/or animals. Question of the Week: What's the funniest game you've ever played? Break song is Never Stop Sneakin' by HyperDuck Soundworks. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.
This week, we’re checking out the unrelentingly peppy soundtrack to the adventure platformer, The Adventure Pals. Composed by Chris Geehan and Dan Bryne-McCullough who make up HyperDuck SoundWorks, this soundtrack will brighten your day, no matter what’s going on around you. Can’t get enough of it? I couldn’t either, so you should go buy it […]

We’re finally here at the end of the longest year in the history of long, bad years. We barely played any games this year, so pulling together our favorite songs was a mighty task, but we weren’t going to let you walk away empty-handed. Also, let’s be real, it’s way harder to find ten good games than games with good music. Good game music is easy. You here me, Capcom?? EASY! THERE’S NO EXCUSE FOR MEGA MAN TO SOUND LIKE THIS!*ahem*Please enjoy these hours of music and best of lists, and I hope everyone has a great end to the year from hell. May the hell be lessened and the games better in 2019. Thanks everyone, for everything.A few notes: you can find our episode for the music from games we played for the first six months of the year on Abnormal Mapping 79. Also, to enjoy this episode in higher quality than our hosting can support, please consider listening to it on YouTube if you're sensitive to that sort of thing! As always you can find Abnormal Mapping on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play! All of our shows, and this entire network, is Patreon supported! Blasphemy abounds in this episode of the HowLongToBeat Podcast. The hosts catch up on 3.5 weeks worth of gaming, interview UltimateZombieToast, and answer such pressing questions as: Do you ever replay games, or is it "one and done"? What games have the best stories? What is the longest time it has taken to beat a game from start date to finish date?Intermission music "Hoy, Small Fry!" was remixed by HyperDuck SoundWorks and retrieved from OCremix.orgTheme music "Pod Willing" by Alex Eliades
This week on BBB, P1 helps Seigi analyze the conditions surrounding the GOTY status of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Chrono Trigger - Part 5 Finally! Vanessa has [REDACTED] the [REDACTED]! CONGRATULATIONS! But! Also! We finish Chrono Trigger and pretty much all get the same ending, except for Matt, but Matt got removed from the timestream and can't maintain his presence in this timeline. This is an all-singing-all-dancing episode featuring Memories of Chrono, Mama Don't Take My Chrono Chrome Away, and also some very, very very very very bad rapping. Oh! And we announce the next game! Questions addressed: Does Queen Zeal recognize Magus as her son? Why can't Vanessa tell a Dark Carnival and Psycho Circus apart? Are conveyor belt fights better or worse than elevator fights? Should we be pouring one out for Toma? Is a JK Execution in bad taste? Do robots really need to be gendered? Who does John hate Geno? This episode: We play when we are taken aboard the Blackbird until the end of the game! Next episode: We play Day 1 and 2 of exciting mystery game! Chrono Trigger Part 4 Chuck Charles hosts the premiere show for dating fictional video game characters - Create-A-Combo! Who will our contestant Vanessa choose? Her new romance chosen, we start asking a whole bunch of questions about this chunk of Chrono Trigger, including: building a machine that harnesses the power of Lavos couldn't be a terrible idea, could it? Does Giga Gaia have a giant dong? How did the Dark Ages people get their magic anyhow? What's it like living in the body of a giant tomato? Why do animator perverts put dongs in everything? Find out these answers and so many more in the latest episode of Square Roots! This week: We hit the climactic turning point of Lavos Beckons! Next week: We finish the gaaaaame! Chrono Trigger Part 3 We're into the thick of things with Chrono Trigger as we hit everyone's favorite part of the game: Magus's Castle! Yep, that's right! Flea! Slash! Ozzie! Our panel of experts including noted pervazoid Jim Banks, loveable curmudgeon Matthew Van Zandt, mysterious genius Vanessa Girl and Manic Pixie Dream Bear John Brandon ask the questions you've always wanted answers to: is Ayla really just Cathy? Does Ayla even have a tail? Is she hitting on Lucca? Is Lucca even interested? What's Vanessa's beef with Mister Tumness? Did the Reptites draw wieners on everyones faces after passing out from the "soup"? Also! A special guest appearance by everyone's favorite Badyear Racer, Johnny! Chrono Trigger Part 2 After a very, very long Blade Runner talk and Jim gets the future year wrong, we settle in for our usual expert panel on all your burning Chrono Trigger questions, such as; why does Matthew constantly misquote Judge Dredd? Did they get wet after being squirted out from Heckran's Cave? Is Vanessa using jet bike racing as some kind of euphemism? Why is Matthew heck-bent on getting Vanessa an eight ball? What even IS an eight ball? Are those white fluffy things big cats or big chickens? Find out these answers and so many more in the latest episode of Square Roots! Chrono Trigger Part 1 We start our new time-hopping adventure in a talk that gets very, very mired in discussing what would and wouldn't be ethical to do with your inert clone. Other questions raised: Is this a total palette swap of a game? What floor does Lucca live on anyhow? What is the technology level of 1000 AD Crono Trigger? Should we advertise for companies on spec? Is Secret of Mana the distant future of Chrono Trigger? Can we tell the difference between KISS and Insane Clown Posse albums? It's perfectly natural to cuddle your clone, right? Should some yums be yucked? Find out these answers and so many more in the latest episode of Square Roots! This week: We begin Chrono Trigger, and play until the bridge boss after the trial! Oblivion released in 2006 bringing a massive open-world geared toward a mainstream audience to PC and console gamers alike. Players were able to explore Cyrodiil, a fantasy land full of kings and gods while experiencing a myriad of stories ranging from becoming the greatest thief in the land to stopping a full-blown demonic invasion. Does Oblivion stand on its own as one of the best games period or is it overshadowed by the likes of Morrowind and Skyrim? Join Alex, Ben, and Colin as they discuss Kimishima's recent interview with Asahi Shumbin, where he discussed tons of information on Nintendo's plans for filmmaking, mobile games, and the NX, as well as news on Yooka-Laylee, Hyrule Warriors, and more. After the break, we have a long Game Corner segment where we not only touch upon tons of games, including Captain Toad, Minecraft, and more, but we discuss the lessons Zelda U can learn from The Wind Waker, as well as other games like Dark Souls, The Witcher, and more. This week's break music is Bulby's Banjo-Kazooie style rendition of the Jungle World theme from Yooka-Laylee. This week's outro music is “Hoy, Small Fry!” a remix of various themes from The Wind Waker,by HyperDuck SoundWorks.
We ended up recording an awful lot of things that were cut out from our main episode last week, so we edited the trimmed segments together into a mini-episode of sorts. Buckle in for some fun tangents on Fallout 3 glitches, hot takes on The Last of Us, and even the weirdness that is Australian ladder licensing, which we are assured is an actual thing. Like a boss! This episode's music, that is. We listen to a lot of rock and orchestral tracks from boss levels, with soaring guitars and epic strings. There are some surprises in here as well, tracks that don't fit the boss music stereotype at all.Download MP3 Tracklist (full info here):
Sadly CE Lowe did not join the guys for this episode. Although, they are graced by another man: Malcolm Rodgers. Meticulous is a word that can be described about Dust: An Elysian Tail. The history behind this game has quite the struggle and not to mention the heart behind it. Back in 2009, Dean DoDrill set out to create a “metroidvania” game with anthropomorphic characters that have a Don Bluth appeal to them. This game proves one does not need a corporation to produce a memorable game. In short:the guys agree. On top of the featured discussion, Josh advances into the next generation with his trusty PS4. He briefly talks about his experience with the new console. Enjoy the episode!
