Mississippi native Karen Hinton is the author of Penis Politics: A Memoir of Women, Men & Power. Her memoir is about how girls and women are impacted by sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse and discrimination, told only through colorful, funny and tragic stories about herself and the girls and women she knew from age 16 to 61. People Magazine recently featured Karen's story, which also has been covered extensively in other broadcast and print media. Her website, www.penis-politics.com, provides additional media, as well as a number of book reviews.Penis Politics has been called a "Stand by Me for girls” with its evocative story of four teenage girls, growing up in small town Mississippi in the 1970s, harboring a secret that reverberates through their lives. One of the girls, the shining star among Karen and her friends, is raped by a school official in the bookroom; she quits school and commits suicide years later. Karen leaves Mississippi for a career in journalism and politics, but the echoes of Mississippi are never far behind her as she becomes a powerful public relations and political operative in Washington and New York City. She served as a communications aide to many Democratic politicians. She was a press secretary for former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, the late DNC Chair Ronald Brown, and former U.S. Congressman Mike Espy, the first Black Congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction in 1986. Known for never ducking a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to “speak up, not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power in politics.Hinton regularly contributes guest columns to the New York Daily News and other publications, focusing on the topics of #MeToo, sexual harassment in politics and skewering big oil, big banks and other bullies whenever possible. Earlier in her career, Hinton was a journalist in Mississippi and Colorado, a cocktail waitress in Aspen and a high school teacher in Mississippi. Connect with Karen:WebsiteInstagram---To learn more about Kim's Me Time Midlife Community on Facebook, go here.

She spells out through compelling storytelling how powerful men in politics often create a public image as a champion of women's rights and equality. P*nis Politics: A Memoir of Women, Men And Power by Karen Hinton, a journalist and former press secretary to Andrew Cuomo and later to New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, offers an insider's view of what it's like to be a woman in the newsroom, the halls of Congress and the highest reaches of American political power. The book is available on amazon.com. Hinton's memoir expands on her widely-read New York Daily News op-ed coining the term “p*nis politics” to describe how powerful men assert control over women in a vulnerable or subordinate position and the extensive media attention Hinton received over her revelations of Andrew Cuomo's sexual politics. Throughout the book, Hinton writes about the small, everyday abuses that some men use to magnify their power at home, in school, and in the office. She shows how penis politics negatively impacts girls and women's view of themselves and their options in life, saying that women are “damned if you speak up and damned if you shut up.” Known for never ducking a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career in 2018 when a catastrophic brain injury propelled her into the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk, talk and write again, she was determined to “speak up, not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power. In P*nis Politics, Hinton writes of the toxic brew of ego, entitlement, and “bro-culture” that is especially difficult for women to navigate in politics. She reveals how certain well-known men create a public image as champions of women's rights and equality, but behind closed doors, they use gender domination to assert their authority. With unflinching candor, Hinton discusses the sexual trauma that affected her and her close-knit group of girlfriends in rural Mississippi in the 1970s. She goes on to describe her career as a journalist and then a political operative and press secretary, evading Bill Clinton's humiliating pickup attempt; maneuvering a tumultuous relationship with Southern writer Willie Morris; dragging highly-acclaimed author Bill Styron dead drunk out of her VW bug; and ultimately struggling with her headline-grabbing confrontations with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio. “I learned lessons in penis politics throughout my life from my interactions with high school coaches and principals, boyfriends, college professors, newspaper editors, lovers, and politicians,” Hinton explains. “Along the way, I struggled to master strategies for dealing with men of power that many women will recognize from their own lives. While the details of their stories may vary from mine, what remains consistent are the ways in which misogyny, sex and discrimination shape how girls and women view themselves and their options.” Ultimately, what women want is to be treated with respect in their daily lives and as professionals in their work. Hinton's goal with P*nis Politics is to help change the way we treat each other. The book is an outspoken appeal to moving us in the right direction and a wake-up call for men to support the women in their lives. As the holiday season nears, state health leaders evaluate the rising trends in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. Then, with the election in the rear view mirror, we hear from the state chairmen from both major parties on the lessons learned and next steps forward. Plus, heightened community COVID-19 transmission is compelling more schools to switch to distance learning. We talk to one district about its decision to shift one of its largest schools to virtual.Segment 1:Health officials continue to sound the alarm as coronavirus cases in Mississippi surge. For the majority of last week, the seven-day rolling average remained around 1,000 new coronavirus cases per day. Hospitalizations and ICU occupancy also continue to rise. State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says during this time of heightened transmission, the threat of infection is closer than many would assume. Increased community spread of the virus has led to transmission in school classrooms, causing some schools to return to virtual education. Health officials fear the increased transmission is a result of out-of-balance priorities.Segment 2:It has been nearly two weeks since the 2020 General Election, but the tremors from the contentious national contest are still being felt. President Donald Trump has refused to concede to challenger Joe Biden, and has leveled unsubstantiated claims of fraud against the election process in a number of key states. The races in Mississippi, however, are settled and the President's party maintains its stronghold on the state's Congressional seats. All of the GOP's incumbents won re-lection, and the state went strongly for the Trump-Pence ticket. State GOP Chair Frank Bordeaux shares the lessons the party learned from this election. For the state's Democrat Party, 2020 signaled an opportunity to shift the state "purple" - picking up a key Senate seat. But for the second time in as many years, challenger Mike Espy was not able to win against Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith. Retired Judge Tyree Irving is chair of the state party. He reflects on the hard fought campaign. Segment 3:More and more schools across the state are shifting to virtual learning as transmission of the coronavirus soars. While state health officials attribute the rising numbers to community spread, Dr. Thomas Dobbs says they're starting to trace some infections to schools. He is encouraging schools to consider the virtual option. One school shifting to a virtual learning is Germantown High School in Madison County. Gene Wright is Director of Communications for Madison County Schools. She says the decision is a result of the protocols put in place before students reported to campus in September. In our special election recap, we examine the Senate race between incumbent Republican Cindy-Hyde Smith and challenger Mike Espy. And, Mississippians overwhelmingly chose to move forward on number of ballot measures while staying solidly red in the elections for federal office.Segment 1:Cindy Hyde-Smith wins rematch versus challenger Mike Espy. What does this race tell us about the role of policy in Mississippi versus the role of political party?Segment 2:Medical marijuana passes by a wide margin. Was this a vote of repudiation on the legislature, a reflection the electorate's attitudes about medical marijuana, or something else?Segment 3:Two measures on the ballot gave Mississippians an opportunity to step out of the shadows of the 19th century. One was an up or down vote on a new state flag after lawmakers moved to retire the 1894 flag this summer. The other, HCR 47, was whether or not to dismantle a multi-tier system to win statewide office. Both measures passed, overwhelmingly. What do these two victories say about Mississippi's relationship to its past?Segment 4:Mississippians have voted in what could be described as astounding numbers. Once every ballot is counted, the turnout could be an all-time high for the state. And two things have become relatively clear as a result of this election: One, Mississippi remains a solidly red state when it comes to electing its officials. Two, Mississippians overwhelmingly chose to approve progressive ballot measures. What does this say about the direction of Mississippi? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We examine the law historians say was designed to keep Black Mississippians out of office. Plus, some Halloween fire safety tips.Segment 1:State officials are beginning to survey the degree of damage caused by Hurricane Zeta. The storm came ashore in southeastern Louisiana earlier this week as a strong Category 2 hurricane before moving swiftly across the New Orleans area and into Mississippi. Governor Tate Reeves says the storm maintained its strength as it passed through the state's southern counties, resulting in significant damage. Greg Michel, Director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says Zeta serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of tropical cyclones.Segment 2:Two candidates running for U.S. Senate in Mississippi are facing each other for the second time. Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is the first woman to represent Mississippi in Washington. Her Democratic challenger Mike Espy is looking to become Mississippi's first black U.S. Senator since Reconstruction. The two ran against each other in a 2018 special election following the resignation of former Senator Thad Cochran. In a series of 18 interviews with renowned Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward, Trump is recorded saying the virus is more deadly than "even your most strenuous flus". In a March 19th interview, Trump is on record admitting wanting to "play it down". Those comments came after Trump had held a number of political rallies where he suggested the virus was a hoax. In the last Senate contest of this election cycle, Democrats tried—but failed—to destroy an incumbent Republican with unfair charges of racism. In the runoff campaign of the Mississippi special election, Democrats focused almost exclusively on one foolish, insensitive comment by Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who expressed her admiration for a local leader by saying “if he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.” Dems saw a menacing invocation of Mississippi’s brutal history of lynching, and an attack on the black Democratic nominee, Mike Espy, while national media claimed Senator Hyde-Smith’s campaign was collapsing. When ballots were counted, however, she won easily—increasing her percentage of the final tally by 12 points over her showing in the non-partisan primary. While pundits may obsess on silly, off-hand and—yes—regrettable remarks, voters are less willing to enforce political correctness by punishing candidates for making them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
