Lance Valcour had it all. Or so it seemed. A thirty-three-year career in policing, rising through the ranks to become an Inspector. A decorated veteran cop, respected as an expert in technology and information management systems, speaking and consulting to police services across Canada and around the world. A happy family, a loving wife and three amazing sons. That's what everyone thought. That's what everyone saw. If they only knew.Lance joins 10-5 The Official Podcast of the OPP Assocation to discuss his journey. Behind the veneer lies a deeper story of pain, anger, and a lifelong struggle with addiction and mental health. If all those cops, colleagues, clients, and even friends and family could have seen his ugly private truth, they would have detested the monster he'd become.Lance Valcour has recently published a book with the hope to help other police officers struggling with addiction and mental health. The book is titled If They Only Knew: A Cop's Journey with Addiction and Mental Health. It is an intensely personal story, not only of one man's demons and depression, but also of a couple's commitment, courage, and love, of a woman who, faced with her husband's growing venom, anger, and cruelty, found the inner strength to stand up and say, “No more. This ends today.”This podcast and the book explores the journey of a man who, faced with this ultimatum, eventually found the strength and courage to admit that he had a problem and needed help. Who, haunted by his own self-loathing, overcame his darkest days to find serenity, peace, and fulfillment. OPP Provincial Constable James Giovannetti discusses the Dufferin Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT) on 10-5 The Official Podcast of the OPP Association. When MCRT deals with a mental health call, the patient is transported to hospital less than 7% of the time. If the team does take a patient to hospital, the process is streamlined quickly, freeing up the police officer and nurse team to be available for other calls. The nurses working on the team are able to get the patients into the mental health system efficiently, which takes workload off Emergency Room nurses. In 2023, through the partnership of the MCRT with the local hospital, wait times in the ER have been reduced, despite the number of calls for mental heath rising. What is a Member's short term sickness plan (STSP) credit entitlement?OPP Association members are entitled to 130 STSP credits each calendar year. The first 6 days are at 100% salary and the balance of 124 days are at 75% salary. Note: 130 STSP credits are based on 8 hour or 7.25 hour days (depends on the hours of the members position). 2. Can a member use attendance credits to top up the 124 STSP credits covered at 75% salary?Yes, members have the following options to top-up the 124 STSP credits at 75% salary to 100% salary:Uniform members – vacation credits, overtime credits and statutory holiday credits.Civilian members – vacation credits and overtime credits. 3. How does a member qualify or requalify for Short Term Sickness Credits (STSP)?Uniform members as per Article 7 of the Uniform Collective Agreement. In 1991, OPP Constable Scott MacLeod answered a typical distress call, a man with a gun, threatening suicide. Just another addict going to jail was his first thought. Little did Scott know his involvement would be the beginning of a life-transforming event for Joe Roberts. The outcome was positive both for Joe and the police officer. Joe credits PC Scott MacLeod with saving his life. Joe feels there needs to be more awareness of positive outcomes between people in mental health crisis and the police and reached out to the OPP Association to help bridge that gap in any way he can. This podcast is the beginning of that outreach to create awareness of the good that police do to defuse situations involving people in mental health crisis. Since Joe's mental health crisis, he has since gone on to become a successful CEO and live a productive life. He is passionate about giving back to the community and raising awareness about mental health and homelessness. He was the driving force behind "The Push for Change". Joe began pushing a shopping cart across Canada to raise awareness and dollars to end youth homelessness. This national trek started May 1, 2016, from St. John's, Newfoundland and ended September 29, 2017 in Vancouver, British Columbia: a 9,064 km, 17-month journey. The shopping cart is a symbol of Joe's transformation from youth homelessness. It represents the outcome we are trying to avoid for future generations of young people.OPP Association Director, Rob Jamieson was among the many OPP members and members of the public who walked alongside Joe Roberts on the Push For Change. In this podcast episode Rob interviews Joe about his life changing experience with an OPP officer, when his life challenges began, who inspired him to change, and the Push for Change, an event that Joe is carrying on today with his continued awareness and outreach.
