Our guest in this episode, is Dr. Jeff Gross, a pioneering neurological surgeon turned regenerative medicine specialist, is passionate about helping people live healthier, more vibrant lives. He shares his journey from traditional medicine to a holistic approach, emphasizing the importance of health span over lifespan. Key points discussed include:* Prioritize health span: Focus on quality of life, not just quantity of years.* Combat inflammation: Adopt lifestyle habits to reduce cellular stress.* Activate natural healing: Leverage sleep, exercise, and nutrition for regeneration.Listen to the podcast for the full conversation.Unlocking Longevity: Dr. Jeff Gross on Extending Health SpanWhen you listen to Dr. Jeff Gross in conversation with Jürgen Strauss, you quickly realize this isn't just another chat about living longer. It's a masterclass in living better for longer—a distinction that's both subtle and profound. Dr. Gross, a pioneering neurological surgeon turned regenerative medicine specialist, brings a refreshing blend of scientific rigor and practical wisdom to the table. At its heart, this conversation is about empowering listeners to activate their body's natural healing and longevity mechanisms. Dr. Gross and Jürgen Strauss explore not just how to add years to life, but how to fill those years with health, energy, and meaning.Key Takeaways* The distinction between lifespan and health span is crucial; the goal is not just to live longer, but to live healthier for longer. [0:01:30]* Chronic inflammation is the common pathway for most age-related decline; suppressing it is central to healthy longevity. [0:05:30]* Regenerative medicine leverages both ancient wisdom and modern science, focusing on natural healing, stem cells, and anti-inflammatory strategies. [0:07:00]* Sleep, exercise, and hormesis (beneficial stress) are foundational for activating the body's own regenerative capacity. [0:16:00]* Nutrition, especially minimizing processed foods and sugars while prioritizing protein, healthy fats, and micronutrients, is medicine for longevity. [0:36:00]* Anyone, regardless of current health, can benefit from adopting small, consistent longevity habits. [0:29:30]The Journey from Neurosurgery to Regenerative MedicineDr. Gross's professional journey is as inspiring as it is instructive. He began in the high-stakes world of neurosurgery, but it was his patients' questions and needs that nudged him toward regenerative medicine. He realized that fixing what's broken isn't enough; true healing means addressing the root causes. This shift wasn't about abandoning science, but about expanding it—embracing both cutting-edge research and time-tested wisdom from around the world. [0:01:30]The Science of Aging: Inflammation, Stem Cells, and the Body's Natural WisdomDr. Gross has a gift for making the complex simple. He explains that chronic inflammation is the silent saboteur of healthy aging, quietly eroding our vitality. Stem cells, meanwhile, are the body's natural repair crew—ready to leap into action if we give them the right environment. He draws on both modern biochemistry and ancient traditions, showing that the best solutions often blend old and new. [0:05:30] [0:07:00]Practical Strategies for Extending Health SpanWhat's truly empowering is how actionable Dr. Gross's advice is. Sleep, exercise, and hormesis (those little, beneficial stresses like cold showers or fasting) are all within reach. He doesn't preach perfection; instead, he encourages small, sustainable changes that add up over time. It's about building habits, not chasing hacks. The message: start where you are, and keep moving forward. [0:16:00] [0:29:30]Nutrition as Medicine: What to Eat, What to Avoid, and Why It MattersFood, in Dr. Gross's world, is both fuel and medicine. He urges us to minimize processed foods and sugars, and to embrace proteins, healthy fats, and micronutrients. It's not about deprivation, but about making choices that support our body's natural resilience. He reminds us that every meal is an opportunity to invest in our future health. [0:36:00]Mental Wellbeing and the Mind-Body ConnectionDr. Gross doesn't neglect the mind. He highlights the importance of sleep, breathwork, and stress management—not as afterthoughts, but as pillars of health. Simple practices, like deep breathing or mindful movement, can have outsized effects on our well-being. He's candid about his own journey, admitting he's not a meditation guru, but he's always learning and experimenting. [0:33:00]The Future of Regenerative Medicine: Hope, Innovation, and EmpowermentLooking ahead, Dr. Gross is optimistic. He sees regenerative medicine moving toward prevention, root-cause solutions, and less reliance on surgery or pharmaceuticals. The future, he believes, is about empowering individuals to take charge of their health, with science and tradition working hand in hand. It's a vision that's both hopeful and practical—a roadmap for anyone ready to invest in a longer, healthier, more vibrant life. [0:48:00]Action Items* Start or increase regular exercise, even if it's just walking—movement is the most accessible longevity tool. [0:50:30]* Add one new longevity habit: floss daily, try a cold shower, or introduce sublingual melatonin at bedtime. [0:31:00]* Reevaluate your nutrition: reduce processed foods and sugars, increase protein and healthy fats, and treat food as medicine. [0:36:00]* Track your sleep and experiment with improvements—consider a wearable or app, but always check in with how you feel. [0:22:00]* Share feedback or questions with the podcast host to guide future deep-dives on topics that resonate. [0:49:30]Next Steps* Explore more about regenerative medicine and Dr. Gross's work at recelebrate.com [0:49:00]* Consider which longevity habits you can implement this week—start small, but start now. [0:50:30]* If interested in specific topics (e.g., hormone optimization, stem cell therapies, mental health strategies), suggest them for future episodes. [0:49:30]SummaryDr. Jeff Gross's conversation is a breath of fresh air in the world of health and longevity. He combines expertise with empathy, and science with soul. If you're ready to rethink what's possible for your own health span, his insights are a great place to start. Remember, it's not just about living longer, but about living better for longer.ActionWrite comments to Jürgen on his podcast pages and let him know, like and subscribe to his material and share the comments. In this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure, we launch our brand new "Feeding Sense" segment! Paediatric dietician Kath Megaw takes over as guest host. She is joined by Nicole Comninellis, a paediatric physiotherapist. Nicole has a special interest in neurodevelopment and infant digestion. Together, they tackle one of parenting's most common challenges: constipation in babies and toddlers. Understanding Constipation from a Physio's Perspective Kath Megaw introduces the topic, noting that dietary advice alone doesn't always solve constipation. Nicole Comninellis explains how constipation presents differently depending on age. Factors include whether it's a new or chronic issue, and if the child was full-term or preterm. Nicole highlights that repeated stress can create negative neurological pathways. This makes constipation more likely to recur. The Mind-Body Connection in Constipation Nicole explains that stress triggers the "fight or flight" response which inhibits digestion. Helping infants feel safe and calm is key. This allows them to develop a positive internal sense (interoception) of their bodies. For toddlers, autonomy, sensory processing, and personality play a big role. New experiences like starting school or a new sibling can also cause withholding.Practical Strategies for Preventing and Managing Constipation Kath and Nicole discuss actionable tips for parents. For Infants: Understanding normal poo variations is important. Varied holding positions and allowing free movement are crucial. Responding to baby's cues when they need to poo, perhaps by picking them up to let gravity assist, can make a difference. For Toddlers: Beyond a balanced diet and hydration, establishing routines around natural body reflexes (like the urge to poo after meals) is helpful. Encourage chewing as this stimulates the gut. Ample movement, play, and exercise are vital. Tummy massage can aid motility and provide comfort. Creating a safe, supportive, and calm bathroom environment is essential. Positioning: For toddlers using a potty or toilet, ensuring their feet are supported and knees are above their hips is very important. Teaching children to relax rather than just push can also be beneficial. Why You Should Listen This "Feeding Sense" episode offers a holistic view of constipation. Kath Megaw and Nicole Comninellis provide expert insights. They explain that movement, posture, and emotional well-being are as vital as diet. The episode is packed with practical, compassionate strategies. These can help prevent constipation from becoming a chronic issue. It's about making pooing a positive, stress-free experience for your child.Kath Megaw is a leading paediatric dietician with over 20 years of experience in infant and child nutrition. She is the co-author of the book Allergy Sense and specializes in guiding parents through complex feeding challenges. Pediatrician and certified coach Jessie Mahoney discusses her article, "Why physicians find negotiating challenging—and what they can do to negotiate better." She explores why negotiation often feels stressful for physicians, linking it to medical training that emphasizes service, self-sacrifice, and conflict avoidance over self-advocacy, particularly impacting women. Drawing from her own experiences and coaching work, Jessie shares eleven actionable strategies designed to help physicians negotiate more effectively and mindfully. These tips include using breathwork to stay calm, clearly asking for what you want, conducting thorough research, understanding your value and bottom line (including the willingness to walk away), framing requests as mutual solutions, leveraging patience and silence, managing emotions like resentment, and celebrating successful outcomes without guilt. The conversation reframes negotiation not just as a business necessity but as a vital skill for physician well-being, energy protection, and building a sustainable career. Summary of Flexibility = Love•Rigidity: The tendency to adhere strictly to rules, routines, and predictability.•Spontaneity: The inclination to seek excitement and adventure without prior planning.•Flexibility: The ability to adapt and find a balance between rigidity and spontaneity.Importance of Understanding DifferencesMerrill points out that understanding one's own personality traits is crucial for improving marital dynamics. He discusses how rigidity can lead to anxiety due to a fear of losing control, while spontaneity can result in feelings of resentment when life feels too boxed in or constrained.Benefits and Drawbacks of RigidityBenefits:A structured environment can lower anxiety, especially for children, by providing clear expectations.2.Commitment: Predictability helps partners uphold commitments and builds trust.Drawbacks:1.Stifled Intimacy: Overly rigid environments can become boring and inhibit emotional closeness.2.Excessive Control: Rigid approaches can lead to legalistic attitudes that diminish personal freedom and enjoyment.Benefits and Drawbacks of SpontaneityBenefits:1.Excitement and Joy: Spontaneity can inject fun and unpredictability into life, fostering deeper emotional connections.2.Encouragement of Playfulness: It allows couples to engage in activities that uplift their spirits and reinforce bonds.Drawbacks:1.Instability: Sudden changes can create anxiety in partners who prefer predictability.2.Neglect of Responsibilities: Spontaneous decisions can sometimes lead to neglecting commitments and responsibilities, causing strain in the relationship.Balancing Rigidity and SpontaneityThe hosts emphasize that neither rigidity nor spontaneity is inherently right or wrong; rather, successful relationships require a balance of both. This balance is achieved through flexibility, the capacity to adapt to each partner's needs and circumstances.Scriptural References and Principles•Ephesians 5:21: Advocating for mutual submission and respect in relationships.•Philippians 2:3-4: Encouraging humility and valuing the needs of others over one's own.•Ecclesiastes 9:9: Reminding partners to enjoy life together amidst their daily routines.Practical Strategies for Couples1.Know Your Tendencies: Partners should identify whether they lean more towards rigidity or spontaneity.2.Set Shared Values: Agree on core values that will guide decisions and behaviors.3.Establish Common Goals: Identify long-term goals that both partners are working towards.4.Listen Actively: Encourage open communication without defensiveness or sarcasm.5.Seek Unity Over Being Right: Focus on compromise and mutual understanding instead of proving each other wrong.6.Encourage Each Other: Foster positivity by recognizing and affirming each other's efforts and traits.7.Shift Mindsets to ‘We': Cultivate a partnership mentality where both aim for collective success and happiness.Flexibility as a Key ComponentThe discussion culminates in the realization that flexibility is essential for resiliency in a relationship. Have you ever wondered why anxiety in children can look and feel so physical—and what we as pediatricians, parents, or caregivers can do about it? We're visiting a fan favorite from Episode #26 of Pediatric Meltdown, Dr. Lia Gaggino sits down with Dr. Colleen Cullinan, a leading pediatric psychologist, to dissect the powerful 3 B's approach: Brain, Body, and Behavior. Together, they reveal eye-opening truths about integrated behavioral health, the ways anxiety manifests in kids, and practical, actionable strategies for managing emotional meltdowns in real-time. This is not just about recognizing anxiety—it's about transforming how we support kids inside and outside the exam room. If you want to empower families, level up your clinical skills, and make a tangible difference, don't miss this conversation. This episode could change the way you think about pediatric care—forever.[00:00 - 11:35] Integrated Care Foundations: Building Partnerships in Pediatric PracticeIntegrated behavioral health bridges the gap between physical and mental health, creating seamless care experiences for families.Primary care is often the first—and sometimes only—entry point for children facing emotional or behavioral challenges.Partnerships between pediatricians and behavioral health providers increase accessibility, reduce stigma, and foster earlier intervention. The synergy and trust between pediatricians and psychology professionals leads to holistic, effective patient care.[11:36 - 15:49] The Role of Primary Care in Managing Anxiety and Emotional HealthPrimary care providers serve as trusted anchors, introducing mental health as an essential component of overall health.Familiarity with a child's history allows pediatricians to recognize subtle behavior changes and collaborate meaningfully with behavioral specialists.Normalizing physical symptoms of anxiety (like stomachaches and headaches) helps bridge conversations from medical to emotional concerns.Educating families on the inseparability of physical and emotional health empowers them to seek support without shame.[15:50 - 28:55] Anxiety Explained: The 3 B's and Practical Strategies for KidsThe "3 B's": Brain, Body, and Behavior, are interlinked—anxiety in the brain triggers body sensations, which guide behavior, often leading to avoidance.Psychoeducation is key: Emphasizing to families and youth that everyone experiences anxiety validates their feelings and reduces shame.Simple, actionable distress tolerance tools—breathing exercises, grounding techniques (like the “five senses” method), and focusing attention—can be taught in minutes during a regular visit.Providers can help children recognize “worry thoughts” and redirect their response before anxiety spirals into withdrawal or meltdown.[28:56 - 49:20] When to Escalate: Distress Tolerance, Prevention, and Team-Based SolutionsDistress tolerance techniques can bridge the gap until a child can access specialized behavioral care—or be sufficient for milder cases.Functional impairment is the marker for when anxiety moves from “manageable” to requiring traditional CBT or higher-level intervention.Exposure therapy explained: At its core, CBT for anxiety involves identifying fears and encouraging gradual, manageable exposure to them, with improvement through repetition.Advocacy for integrated behavioral health, resource sharing, and ongoing partnerships with community therapists are essential for sustainable, high-impact child mental health care.[49:21- 53:34] Dr. Lia's...

Do downturns in the stock market inevitably lead to down years? On the show this month, I'm walking you through an analysis of U.S. market trends over the past two decades, illustrating how downturns, even severe ones, often don't spell disaster for annual returns. I'll also share what savvy family stewards can do to weather these turbulent times and potentially capitalize on them. From practical strategies like Roth conversions and strategic rebalancing to steering clear of emotionally driven decisions, this episode is packed with insights to help you take family stewardship wealth to the next level. Tune in to see how a long-term, data-driven outlook can lead to more confident investing, regardless of market swings. Outline of This Episode [3:31] Do downturns lead to down years? [8:22] This is a volatile year for US stocks, but international companies did better. [11:44] Stay invested; the market rebounds quickly. [14:15[ Post-crash market rebound patterns. [18:43] My guide to strategically rebalancing your portfolio. Understanding Market Fluctuations Between 2005 and 2024, the U.S. stock market witnessed only three negative years out of twenty, a testament to its resilience. Despite experiencing several downturns during those years, market recovery was the norm. For instance, although 2020 began with a staggering 35% downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it ended 21% up. Similarly, in 2011, despite a 20% downturn during the year, the market concluded with a positive return. This historical perspective highlights the fleeting nature of downturns and underscores the importance of maintaining a disciplined approach to investing during turbulent times. A critical question for investors is whether downturns inevitably result in negative annual returns. Over the past twenty years, analysis reveals that downturns rarely dictate an entire year's trajectory. 17 out of the last 20 years ended positively, despite intrayear downturns ranging from 6% to as high as 35%. The takeaway here is significant: short-term market fluctuations do not always translate into negative returns, emphasizing the importance of a long-term perspective and patience. Why Staying the Course Pays Off Many investors, spooked by temporary market declines, resort to withdrawing their investments, potentially locking in losses. Instead, remaining invested allows one to benefit from eventual recoveries. Data shows that three-day drops, like the 11% decline recorded recently, are usually followed by substantial gains over the subsequent year, three years, and five years. Investors who maintain discipline through these downturns often see their portfolios grow significantly when the market rebounds. Practical Strategies for Navigating Downturns For those unsure how to act during a downturn, consider these proactive measures: Avoid Constant Monitoring: Constantly checking your investment portfolio during a downturn can lead to emotional decision-making. Once your strategy is in place, trust your plan and avoid frequent account reviews that can heighten anxiety and fear,...

Master nutrition psychology for lifters, building a strong mindset for muscle and meals, and achieving peak performance. Unlock the mental game of nutrition and transform your lifting journey. This episode delves into the critical role of Nutrition Psychology for Lifters, going beyond basic dietary recommendations. We welcome Marcus Kain of Strong Not Starving to explore the mindset shift needed to navigate emotional eating, build resilience, and achieve lasting peace with food. Discover practical strategies to master your mindset, enhance distress tolerance, and cultivate a healthy relationship with nutrition. The Foundation of Nutrition Psychology for Lifters: Beyond the Plate Nutrition Psychology for Lifters goes beyond the simple mechanics of calories and macronutrients; it delves into the complex interplay between the mind, emotions, and food choices. Marcus Caine of Strong Not Starving joins us to shed light on how this field addresses the deeper challenges individuals face with food, moving beyond basic dietary recommendations. A key concept is the "Horse & Rider" metaphor, which illustrates the dynamic between the subconscious and conscious mind. Understanding this dynamic is crucial for lifters, as nutrition decisions are often driven by emotional factors more so than training decisions, leading to lower compliance rates. A critical aspect of Nutrition Psychology for Lifters is recognizing and eliminating unlikely solutions. This involves moving away from unsustainable dietary restrictions and focusing on building essential skills and long-term habits. It's about acknowledging that lasting change isn't about quick fixes but about cultivating a healthy relationship with food. This approach emphasizes that true mastery in nutrition isn't about the absence of difficult feelings but rather about developing the ability to navigate those feelings effectively. Numbing or distracting from emotions, such as through unhealthy food choices, is not a viable long-term strategy. Navigating Emotional Eating and Building Resilience Through Nutrition Psychology for Lifters Advanced emotional regulation is a cornerstone of Nutrition Psychology for Lifters. It involves moving beyond simply numbing or distracting oneself from difficult feelings and instead learning to navigate discomfort without resorting to unhealthy eating patterns. Understanding your "Window of Tolerance" for discomfort is crucial in this process. This awareness helps lifters recognize when food is being used as an emotional escape. Celebratory situations present unique challenges, and Nutrition Psychology for Lifters encourages individuals to be mindful of the diminishing returns of enjoyable food experiences. It's about learning to enjoy moments without losing sight of long-term goals and avoiding the trap of getting swept up in the moment to the point of discomfort. Building distress tolerance is essential for developing resilience in Nutrition Psychology for Lifters. This involves consistent practice and repetition to build the ability to handle discomfort and emotional triggers effectively. It's about finding that balance of letting go and enjoying things while also being aware of when it's time to call it a day. The ability to navigate that point of "I've had enough" without feeling deprived is a skill that takes time to develop, but it's crucial for achieving lasting freedom and trust in your nutritional choices. Practical Strategies and Habit Formation in Nutrition Psychology for Lifters Building trust in oneself through practice is fundamental in Nutrition Psychology for Lifters. This trust comes from consistent action and self-observation, demonstrating the ability to follow through on commitments. Developing novice skills for mindful eating is a vital first step, which includes practicing non-judgmental awareness of thoughts and feelings and removing "good" and "bad" labels from food. Learning to notice and name feelings is also a crucial skill. This involves identifying and acknowledging emotions in real-time and recognizing when distress begins to arise. Nutrition Psychology for Lifters provides practical tools to help individuals learn to tolerate discomfort, avoid emotional spirals, and practice separating emotions from identity. It's about avoiding catastrophizing, urgent decision-making, and cultivating self-compassion. By focusing on these practical strategies and habit formation, lifters can develop a sustainable and healthy relationship with food, ultimately supporting their fitness goals and overall well-being.
