Why Does Jesus Get Baptized in the Wilderness?

The Wilderness E8 –– In the Bible, God often turns wilderness wanderings into times of testing, purification, and preparation for returning to the garden land. The tragedy of the Hebrew Bible, however, is that when people do return to the garden, they keep following their own distorted wisdom and desires. This is why the beginning of every gospel account features a wild prophet named John, who is out in the wilderness by the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance. It's a symbolic reenactment of when God purified the exodus generation through the deadly chaos waters and treacherous desert. But then Jesus approaches John, also asking to be baptized. Why? In this episode, Jon and Tim unpack the background and ministry of John the Baptizer and how Jesus' baptism connects to his larger Kingdom mission.CHAPTERSRecap of Theme and Setup for John the Baptizer (0:00-15:53)John's Background and Words to the Pharisees (15:53-38:03)Why Jesus Participates in a Baptism of Repentance (38:03-44:47)The Heavenly Announcement After Jesus' Baptism (44:47-51:33)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESThe Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English, translated by Geza VermesYou can view annotations for this episode—plus our entire library of videos, podcasts, articles, and classes—in the BibleProject app, available for Android and iOS.Check out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books here.SHOW MUSIC“Lunch Break ft. Producer Mike joins Kaitlyn again to discuss a seemingly easy but surprisingly tricky question: did Jesus get sick? Mike and Kaitlyn talk about the meaning of the incarnation: What does it mean that Jesus was (and is!) really, truly human, but did not sin? If Jeus was without sin, does that mean he was without illness? Did Jesus get especially tempted when he got a cold? What does it mean for us if Jesus did allow himself to get sick?   0:00 - Theme Song   00:28 - Did Jesus Ever Get Sick?   6:47 - Does Sin Make Us Sick?   11:20 - Would Jesus choose to be sick?   14:40 - Sponsor - No Small Endeavor - Award-winning podcast where theologians, philosophers, and best-selling authors talk about faith with Lee C. 1Peter 3:15, Colossians 4:4-7, 2 Corinthians 5:17-20May 18th, 2025There is a finite number of people who can talk Jesus to a crowd. There is an infinite number of people who can talk Jesus to a person. The key to being an effective Everyday Evangelist is seeing the person apart from their crowd and believing that God is orchestrating the conversation. Every Day Evangelism is… Going public with a positive review on Jesus.Touting Jesus as the person you can't live without.Being clothed in Christ. Following Jesus so closely that you live like, act like and talk like Him. The key to effective evangelism is to shift your focus from conversions to conversations. Everyday evangelism (spiritual influence) is the act of leading someone one step closer to Jesus than they were before our interaction. Why aren't more Christians engaged in everyday evangelism? We underestimate our calling/identity as everyday evangelists. When you embrace a calling/identity, you chase proficiency and look for opportunities. We over-compartmentalize our lives. When you integrate your life, you are the same person in every compartment.Everyday Evangelists… sit on go, carrying hope with humility.1 Peter 3:15b (NIV) 15 … Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, To sit on go is to be ready for the ask prepared with the answer. Hope-filled people always peaks people's curiosity. Hope is in short supply.Humility doesn't correct people, it directs peoples. I am not better than the next person because of my Jesus story, but I am better off than the next person. Everyday Evangelists… pray for open doors & clear communication.Colossians 4:3-6 (NIV) 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.Open doors mean receptive encounters. Clear Communication. There are two parts clear communication My Part: Clarity takes preparation.Holy Spirit Part: Pray for the Holy Spirit to “fill in the blanks.” Conversation Coaching Use Wisdom. The gospel is offensive enough don't add to it by what you say and how you say it.Make the Most. Kairos means squeeze the most out of the opportunity.Wrap the Truth in Grace. The Truth of the message is Grace so make the tone of the conversation graceful.Everyday Evangelists… are reconciled and reconciling. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 (NIV) 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. As Everyday Evangelists we stand on…Our re-formation in the person of Christ. Reconciliation as our ministry with Christ. Ambassador as our identity in Christ.

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. We are in the Gospel of Mark. Go to the website and grab the Scripture Journal for this study so you can study along with us. Our shout-out today goes to Phillip "William" Beckwith from Greer, SC. Thanks for being a monthly partner. We cannot do what we do here without the support of faithful donors like you. I love you brother. Today, we're reading Mark 1:9-11: In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” — Mark 1:9-11 Jesus didn't need to be baptized. Yet, he did. He stepped into the waters of baptism to identify with us. He didn't come to be served but to serve, to walk through the same trials and experiences we face. And his baptism marked the start of his public ministry, but we see here it also served as a resounding affirmation from the Father. As Jesus came out of the water, the heavens were torn open, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father's voice thundered, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." This was profound on two levels. First, it revealed Jesus's identity as the Son of God, marked by divine approval. Second, it displayed the full Trinity in action: the Father speaking, the Son being baptized, and the Spirit descending. But there's more. Jesus didn't come just to receive the Father's approval. He came to restore our relationship with the Father. The voice that said, “You are my beloved Son” is now extended to us. The Father adopts us into his family through Jesus. The same Spirit that descended on Jesus is available to empower us today. Jesus's baptism is a reminder that the Father delights in his children and that he equips us with his Spirit to live out our calling. You see, this moment wasn't just for Jesus. It was done as an example and declaration for all who would follow him. We are invited into an immersive relationship with the Father. Public baptism declares we are confirmed, secured, and empowered by the Father. If you haven't made the decision to follow Jesus, today is the day to turn to him. Jesus came to restore your relationship with your Father and empower you to live for him. Will you accept that invitation today? You see, the Father is not distant or disengaged. He is actively involved in our lives, calling us to be his children. Just as Jesus was affirmed and empowered in his identity as the Son of God, we too are called to walk in our new identity as sons and daughters of the King. Don't do this life alone without the Heavenly Father. He has done everything to call you home. If today is the day for you to come home. Write "I choose Jesus," in the comments below. #BelovedByTheFather, #Mark1Devotional, #IdentityInChrist ASK THIS: Why do you think Jesus chose to be baptized? How does the Father's voice shape your view of God? Do you live from approval or for approval? What does it mean to you to be called God's beloved child? DO THIS: Make your identity in Christ your foundation—live from the Father's affirmation, not for it. PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for calling me your beloved. Empower me by your Spirit to live boldly in my new identity. Amen. PLAY THIS: Who You Say I Am.

In this engaging conversation, Danielle Strickland, James Sholl, and Aaron White explore the themes of powers and principalities, the harrowing of hell, and the complexities of the gospel. They discuss the sacredness of life, the corruption of good systems, and the idolatry of self, while emphasizing the importance of aligning with the marginalized and understanding the true nature of God's power. The conversation challenges traditional views on hell and encourages a deeper exploration of liberation theology and the good news of Jesus. In this conversation, the speakers explore the themes of death, judgment, and the nature of hell, emphasizing the influence of Dante's imagery on contemporary beliefs. They discuss the biblical stories of the rich man and Lazarus, the concept of refinement and transformation, and the significance of Jesus' descent into hell as a means of liberation. The dialogue also touches on the nature of free will, the role of mercy in justice, and the importance of recognizing and liberating those trapped in shadows of despair. Ultimately, they advocate for a vision of good news that emphasizes love, liberation, and the relentless pursuit of God.Takeaways* The power of babies serves as a reminder of sacredness.* Powers and principalities are often misunderstood in evangelicalism.* The harrowing of hell reveals the depths of God's love and justice.* Good systems can become corrupted and serve self-interests.* Idolatry often stems from a desire for self-preservation.* Jesus invites us to die to our self-serving agendas.* The true power of the gospel liberates and transforms lives.* Understanding hell requires a nuanced theological perspective.* Liberation theology emphasizes the voices of the marginalized.* The conversation challenges traditional views on God's judgment and mercy. We often create an allegiance with death and judgment without realizing it.* Dante's portrayal of hell has shaped modern Christian beliefs.* The story of the rich man and Lazarus illustrates a great reversal.* Refinement and transformation are essential aspects of faith.* Jesus' descent into hell signifies victory over death and liberation for captives.* Free will is directed towards the good, but many remain trapped in shadows.* Jesus is the bait that leads to the liberation of souls from hell.* Justice is ultimately trumped by mercy in God's economy.* Evil is a shadow, and light must shine to remove it.* The call to action is to harrow hell and liberate those in despair.Titles* Exploring Powers and Principalities* The Harrowing of Hell Explained* Understanding the Gospel's True Power* The Corruption of Good Systems* Idolatry and Self-Preservation* The Invitation to Die with Jesus Get full access to Right Side Up: Danielle Strickland at daniellestrickland.substack.com/subscribe

Thescene opens with Pharisees approaching Jesus: “Get out and depart from here, for Herod will kill you” (v. 31). They're likely scheming, hoping to scareHim from Perea, which was Herod Antipas' territory, back to Judea, where theSanhedrin could trap Him. Herod, who beheaded John the Baptist (Luke 9:7-9),was curious about Jesus' miracles but now threatens His life, perhaps fearingHis influence. The Pharisees' warning may carry truth, yet their motives aresuspect, cloaked in false concern. Jesus, unfazed, and with courage, replies, “Goand tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today andtomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected'” (v. 32). CallingHerod a “fox”, indicating that he was sly and despised, Jesus uses sharpsarcasm, not disrespect, fitting His prophetic role (Nehemiah 4:3). Jesus is novictim of Herod's schemes because He knows that He is following a divinetimetable (John 2:4; Acts 2:23). Nothing, not even Herod's threats, can derailGod's plan for His death at Passover in Jerusalem, decreed before time (1 Peter1:20). “Today and tomorrow” mean He'll continue His work, freeing theoppressed, healing the sick, until the “third day,” hinting at His death and resurrection, when His mission is “finished” (John 19:30). No earthly power, neither Herodnor Pharisees, can stop Him. And it will not stop us if we know God's plan andpurpose for our lives! ThenJesus declares, “Nevertheless I must walk today, tomorrow, and the dayfollowing, for it cannot be that a prophet perish outside of Jerusalem” (v.33). With biting irony, He notes Jerusalem's grim history as the place whereprophets die, judged by the Sanhedrin as false (Luke 11:47-51; Acts 13:27). “Itcannot be”, in other words, “it's not fitting”, for Him to die elsewhere. This isn't resignation; it's resolve to face His destiny, exposing the city'sguilt in rejecting God's messengers. Jesustone now shifts to anguish revealing His compassion: “O Jerusalem,Jerusalem, which kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often Iwanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under herwings, but you were not willing!” (v. 34). This lament, repeated later(Matthew 23:37), pulses with love, not anger. Like a hen shielding chicks fromdanger (Psalm 91:4), Jesus longed to protect Israel—His “house,” both thenation and temple. He knew its history, from Melchizedek to the Maccabees, yetsaw its rebellion. Despite countless chances to repent, they refused, leavingtheir house “desolate” (v. 35). The temple, their idol, would burn in AD 70,the people scattered, with no king or priest (Hosea 3:4). Yet,Jesus gives them hope: “You shall not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is Hewho comes in the name of the Lord'” (v. 35; Psalm 118:26). , This points to His return, whenIsrael will mourn, then embrace Him (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:1). Jesusdoesn't forsake them; a future awaits in His coming Millennium reign whenthey'll sing His praise.Jesus' courage should challenge our fears. Hefaced Herod's threats, unmoved, because He trusted God's plan. Are we as bold,or do we shrink from opposition? His lament reveals God's compassionate heartwhich is patient, yearning to gather us, yet grieved by refusal. Israel's “youwere not willing” warns us: privilege doesn't save; only surrender does. The Pharisees hid behind their deceit, and Jerusalem clung to tradition. Today,we might dodge God's call with excuses or delay. But the door of grace won'tstay open forever, because now is the time to respond (Hebrews 4:7). ClosingChallengeTodaydo you hear the calls of Jesus? Are you resisting Jesus' call like Jerusalem,or trusting His timing like He did? This week, face one fear or excuse holdingyou back. Maybe sharing your faith or letting go of control. Step forwardboldly, praying for a heart soft to His gathering wings. Don't say “I wouldnot”, but today say yes.

Health for the body:Health for the soul:The pope recently came out against corruption at the Vatican and also took a strong stance against Freemasonry, saying the values of this secret society are “incompatible” with the Catholic faith. For those who know their history there is great irony in these words, and today we will learn just how ironic they are by looking at the Alumbrados, the Jesuits, the French Revolution and the history of occult organizations like the Freemasons. My Dear Child,As you reflect on this fourth day of Advent, the words from Isaiah 7:14 resonate with the profound mystery and wonder of the season. "Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel." This prophecy, spoken centuries before My birth, foretold the miraculous event that would change the course of history and the fate of humanity. My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The name Immanuel, meaning "God with us," reveals the heart of My mission on earth. It was not just to teach, heal, or even to perform miracles, but to be God in your midst, to live among My people, to share in your joys and sorrows, to experience the fullness of human life. This promise was a beacon of hope, a light in the darkness, heralding a new era of divine intimacy and love.As you journey through Advent, remember that this season is not just a remembrance of My birth as a baby in Bethlehem. It is a celebration of My continual presence in your life. Immanuel is not a distant historical fact; it is a living reality. I am with you always, in every moment, every circumstance, every trial, and every joy. This prophecy in Isaiah is an invitation to trust in My unfailing presence. Even when you face challenges or walk through valleys of uncertainty, know that I am with you. My birth was a sign that God has not and will not abandon His people. I am your constant companion, your guide, your comforter, and your friend.During this Advent season, may you find renewed hope, joy, and peace in the knowledge of My presence. May the truth of Immanuel fill your heart with awe and gratitude. And may you experience My love more deeply, knowing that I am indeed God with you, now and forevermore. With Everlasting Love,Jesus Get full access to My Reasons To Believe at myr2b.substack.com/subscribe

Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life? Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God's voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do. The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life.   Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His.   The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open.     Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
