Thescene opens with Pharisees approaching Jesus: “Get out and depart from here, for Herod will kill you” (v. 31). They're likely scheming, hoping to scareHim from Perea, which was Herod Antipas' territory, back to Judea, where theSanhedrin could trap Him. Herod, who beheaded John the Baptist (Luke 9:7-9),was curious about Jesus' miracles but now threatens His life, perhaps fearingHis influence. The Pharisees' warning may carry truth, yet their motives aresuspect, cloaked in false concern. Jesus, unfazed, and with courage, replies, “Goand tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today andtomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected'” (v. 32). CallingHerod a “fox”, indicating that he was sly and despised, Jesus uses sharpsarcasm, not disrespect, fitting His prophetic role (Nehemiah 4:3). Jesus is novictim of Herod's schemes because He knows that He is following a divinetimetable (John 2:4; Acts 2:23). Nothing, not even Herod's threats, can derailGod's plan for His death at Passover in Jerusalem, decreed before time (1 Peter1:20). “Today and tomorrow” mean He'll continue His work, freeing theoppressed, healing the sick, until the “third day,” hinting at His death and resurrection, when His mission is “finished” (John 19:30). No earthly power, neither Herodnor Pharisees, can stop Him. And it will not stop us if we know God's plan andpurpose for our lives! ThenJesus declares, “Nevertheless I must walk today, tomorrow, and the dayfollowing, for it cannot be that a prophet perish outside of Jerusalem” (v.33). With biting irony, He notes Jerusalem's grim history as the place whereprophets die, judged by the Sanhedrin as false (Luke 11:47-51; Acts 13:27). “Itcannot be”, in other words, “it's not fitting”, for Him to die elsewhere. This isn't resignation; it's resolve to face His destiny, exposing the city'sguilt in rejecting God's messengers. Jesustone now shifts to anguish revealing His compassion: “O Jerusalem,Jerusalem, which kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often Iwanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under herwings, but you were not willing!” (v. 34). This lament, repeated later(Matthew 23:37), pulses with love, not anger. Like a hen shielding chicks fromdanger (Psalm 91:4), Jesus longed to protect Israel—His “house,” both thenation and temple. He knew its history, from Melchizedek to the Maccabees, yetsaw its rebellion. Despite countless chances to repent, they refused, leavingtheir house “desolate” (v. 35). The temple, their idol, would burn in AD 70,the people scattered, with no king or priest (Hosea 3:4). Yet,Jesus gives them hope: “You shall not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is Hewho comes in the name of the Lord'” (v. 35; Psalm 118:26). , This points to His return, whenIsrael will mourn, then embrace Him (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:1). Jesusdoesn't forsake them; a future awaits in His coming Millennium reign whenthey'll sing His praise.Jesus' courage should challenge our fears. Hefaced Herod's threats, unmoved, because He trusted God's plan. Are we as bold,or do we shrink from opposition? His lament reveals God's compassionate heartwhich is patient, yearning to gather us, yet grieved by refusal. Israel's “youwere not willing” warns us: privilege doesn't save; only surrender does. The Pharisees hid behind their deceit, and Jerusalem clung to tradition. Today,we might dodge God's call with excuses or delay. But the door of grace won'tstay open forever, because now is the time to respond (Hebrews 4:7). ClosingChallengeTodaydo you hear the calls of Jesus? Are you resisting Jesus' call like Jerusalem,or trusting His timing like He did? This week, face one fear or excuse holdingyou back. Maybe sharing your faith or letting go of control. Step forwardboldly, praying for a heart soft to His gathering wings. Don't say “I wouldnot”, but today say yes.

Chapter 1 The Holy Spirit: The Infinite, Personal GodStill, what errors and heresies have crept into the church in the last two thousand years in relation to the Holy Spirit! How diligent we must thus be in studying and knowing about the person and work of the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. Pg. 2“The Holy Spirit is a Person” Pg. 3The Spirit may be heat and influence and power and communication, but before He is any of them, He is a person. He is as much a divine person as is God the Father or Jesus the Son. The Spirit may be heat and influence and power and communication, but before He is any of them, He is a person. He is as much a divine person as is God the Father or Jesus the Son1. The Scriptures use personal pronouns in referring to the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13:2, John 15:26, John 16:13-14)2. The Scriptures ascribe personal traits to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit can be lied to, Peter says in Acts 5:3.3. The Scriptures ascribe personal tasks to the Spirit. Scripture says the Spirit has the power of speech; (1 Tim 4:1, Rev 2:7, John 14:26, Luke 12:12)4. The Scriptures ascribe personal characteristics to the Spirit. On four recorded occasions, Jesus refers to the Spirit as the “paraclete.” The word is derived from the prefix para and the root kalein. Together they mean “one who is called alongside.”“So the Holy Spirit is a person; He is not an influence or quality or force or power or some emanation from God. He is as much a person as Jesus, but like the angels and the Father, the Holy Spirit does not possess a body.”THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD Pg. 61. The Holy Spirit is expressly called God. In Acts 5:3–42. The Holy Spirit is the author of Old Testament verses spoken by Jehovah. (Acts 28:25, Is 6:9, 2 Peter1:21)3. The Holy Spirit displays all the perfections of God. The Holy Spirit is omniscient; He knows everything.(1 Cor 2:10-11)4. 7. Jesus’ Identity Mark 8:27-33: Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’ Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ he said. ‘You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’ This section of the Bible contains the verse, which divulges Jesus’ identity, when Peter calls Him the Christ or Messiah or Saviour (Mark 8:29). In the preceding few verses Jesus and the disciples were in Bethsaida and there is the incident where Jesus healed the blind man. See who Jesus is – (Mark 8:22) reveals that the faith of others apart from the blind man was also involved There are two very obvious questions that come out of this. Why did Jesus touch the blind man twice to heal him? We don’t know for sure, but we do know that Jesus kept on until the man could see clearly. There are two things to remember. Firstly that Jesus was unable to do miracles because of people’s lack of faith. Secondly, we also need to remember that God does things in His own time and for His own purposes always acting in order to tell us of His love for us. Why does Jesus tell the man not to tell anybody? Jesus didn’t want to be seen as only a healer and miracle worker. Confession of who Jesus is Now we come to a climactic part of the Gospels when Jesus asks His disciples: “Who do people say that I am? John the Baptist Jesus and John had been seen together in public and they were different in personality and ministry. John came ‘in the spirit and power of Elijah’ (Luke 1:17), in a ministry of judgement, whereas Jesus came in a spirit of meekness and service. John performed no miracles (John 10:41), but Jesus was a miracle worker. John even dressed like the prophet Elijah (2 Kings 1:8; Mark 1:6) Jeremiah (Matthew 16:14) Jeremiah was the ‘weeping prophet’, and Jesus was the ‘man of sorrows’ Jeremiah called the people to true repentance from the heart, and so did Jesus. Both men were misunderstood and rejected by their own people. Both men condemned the false religious leaders and the hypocritical worship in the temple. Those in authority persecuted both men. In both His works and words, Jesus gave evidence to the people that He was the Son of God, the Messiah, and yet they did not get the message. Why did Jesus tell the disciples to keep quiet about Him? Disciples had much to learn about him and what it meant to follow him. The Jews were expecting a victorious Messiah (Isaiah 11:1-5). But they had forgotten that the Messiah must suffer and die (Isaiah 53:1-12; Luke 24:26). The Jewish people thought that the Messiah would set up an earthly political kingdom, but Jesus came to set up a spiritual kingdom that would last forever (Isaiah 9:7; Daniel 7:13-14; Luke 1:33; Revelation 11:15) What was the purpose of the Messiah? (Mk10:45) Jesus’ mission was to be the Servant of the Lord, and therefore, the saviour of the world as God’s Son (John 3:16). His purpose as the Messiah was neither that He be served nor that He will lead a political overthrow of the Roman government as some had hoped. Rather, His purpose as the Messiah was to be God’s servant and give a message of hope for the spiritually poor and spiritually oppressed people. Follow who Jesus is When Jesus rebuked Peter, he was also telling off the other disciples (Mark 8:33). They did not yet understand how suffering and glory were in relationship with each other. However by the time Peter had written 1 Peter, he had correlated the two as being in harmony with each other. (1 Peter1:6-8, 1 Peter 4:13-5:10). Some Jewish leaders taught of 2 Messiahs – one to suffer and one who would reign (1Peter 1:10-12) There is a price to pay for being true followers of Jesus: We must surrender completely to him. We must identify with him in his suffering and death. We must follow him obediently, wherever he leads. What is the reward for the true disciple of Jesus? Satan promises glory now, but in the end suffering comes. God promises suffering now, but the suffering turns to glory. Spiritually, at this time, the disciples were still blind to who Jesus was, just as the man who was physically blind. Our confession of Jesus is a matter of life and death (John 8:21;1 John 4:1-3). Confession of Jesus as Lord is necessary for salvation (1 Corinthians 12:1-3), when that confession is from the heart (Romans 10:9-10). Christians are called to follow Jesus, to take up their cross and this could mean nothing less than being ready to suffer and die for Jesus. If we are ashamed of him on earth, he will be ashamed of us when the end of the world has come. He will reward those deserving the reward, and deny those who deny him. In fact, God loves us so much that He double sealed the promises so we would know He will back them up: He spoke the promises, and then promised that He would not break them, Hebrews 6:17-18, “Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it (His Promises) by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.” And, in Hebrews 4:1, “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.”****There are many very important subjects which are not being preached in our Christian community, there are many that are being preached incorrectly, based on false beliefs, and some popular beliefs that are completely made up and have no mention whatsoever in the Bible. ****Therefore, we should each be actively engaged in seeking God's Pure Word because each of us are personally responsible for our own salvation, nobody will be standing beside us defending us at the Judgment Seat of Christ, we will be judged by God's Pure Word, Christ! , and we are not predestined to heaven or hell before we are born on Earth as Calvinist's lies teach! on@KLRNRadio.com 7AM Tue or anytime at rahardin.com(Podcast

Episode 166 :: Dr. Clarence Shuler :: Stories of Finding Hope in Dark Places and Cross-Cultural Relationships that Can Heal

Simply Stories Podcast

Dr. Clarence Shuler is the President and CEO of his nonprofit BLR- which stands for Building Lasting Relationships. Their mission is to equip others for discipleship in various venues. He and his wife both speak and write about marriage, but also dealing with infidelity, and divorce, but they especially love to minister to singles in the church. Whatever it looks like, the Shulers are committed to “loving people with God's love with no agenda and see what happens.” During our conversation today, Dr. Shuler shared his story of coming to Christ through a relationship that would impact his life in many ways, through a young guy by the name of Gary Chapman. Yup, the Love Languages guy. I share that because their relationship gave birth to 50+ years of friendship and an opportunity to share how crossing those racial lines in the 1960s taught them both and continues to guide them in helping others learn how to embrace cross-cultural friendships today. Dr. Shuler himself does quite a bit of diversity training for companies, and for churches, and brings such gracious honesty to the table about what it has been like for him as a Black man in predominately white spaces. His most recent book is a really powerful and raw look into his journey with depression and a sense of hopelessness. The book is called Finding Hope in Dark Places: Facing Loneliness, Depression, and Anxiety with the Power of Grace. He coauthored it with his therapist, Dr. Monique Smith Gadson, otherwise known as Dr. Mo. Their book is unique in that it gives an honest narrative of Clarence's personal experiences as he walked out the darkest place of his life, but also shows his relationship with his counselor and how she was able to help him in that season. It is full of spiritual and mental health wisdom, it does not end tied in a bow, but it is overflowing with hope. Dr. Shuler hopes that sharing his journey will empower anyone, but especially Black men, to embrace vulnerability and find God's power and healing in weakness. I also want to echo this powerful reminder Dr. Shuler gives in this episode: Being in a dark place is not a sin. It is a place for the Lord to reveal Himself in a whole new way. We see throughout scripture about the Lord shepherding us in dark places, and in this world, we will know and have trouble, but we will never be alone and He will help us to find our hearts again there. He is not finished with you, friend. The promises come alive to us thru faith, that means we must seek the promises of the Scriptures; to know & accept the promises, God's Words, (which are Spirit and life, John 6:63,) into our hearts to faith. They are so great we must even have God's help in believing and receiving them, but we must go to God as His child and learn from Him. There are a LOT of things you could do with your life, but I don't think anything compares with following Jesus and joining Him on His mission of bringing Hope to the nations. Welcome to Run With Horses and Thanks for including me in your journey!   Today's focus - Growing in Ministry – Keep taking steps towards spiritual maturity!   I hope you understand that God wants you to grow. In many ways, in many area of life. God is working in you to grow. Hebrew 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. 1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. Col.1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and long-suffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. Col.2:6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. 2 Peter1:5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.   I want to introduce three stages of Spiritual Growth as they relate to your spiritual ministry. To day we will cover an overview of the three stages and then go over each one in detail in the next three shows. Let me know if you have questions or comments as we go along!   First Stage – Spiritual Identity and Foundations What is it? Learning who you are in God's sight. Time of developing our character. Learning the basics of the Christian life. Developing good spiritual habits.   Answering questions like: Who does God day I am? What does it mean to follow Jesus? How do I grow spiritually?   Second Stage – Spiritual Sacrifice and Service What is it? Learning how to relate in a biblical way to others. Learn and apply the “one another's” of the NT. Learn the meaning and value of sacrifice. Find joy in serving.   Answering questions like: What does it mean to serve others? What is sacrifice in my life? Why is it important? What are my spiritual gifts?   Third Stage – Spiritual Maturity and Reproduction What is it? Know and maintain biblical priorities. Maintain healthy spiritual habits and the disciplines that build a strong spiritual life. Intentionally seek out younger people and invest in their spiritual life. Prioritize disciple making activities and relationships.   Answering questions like: Who around me needs encouragement today? How can I help others grow and serve? What do I need to do to help others become disciple makers?   OUTRO Thanks for joining me today! Check out runwithhorses.net for show notes and past shows.
