Coffee keeps the world turning. Or, at least, it makes it easier to pry your eyelids open and maintain some semblance of normalcy every day. There have been many research studies, technological innovations, and passionate arguments dedicated to brewing a better cup of coffee. A recent wave of impressively designed coffee gadgets aims to dial it in even further. But too often, those flashy and high-tech solutions don't make a mug of coffee that's any more satisfying than the familiar methods that have been around for years—or centuries, even. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED contributor, cookbook author, and smart-kitchen expert Joe Ray joins us to chat about coffee: the optimal way to brew it, the best tech to use, and whether it's OK to shame people who use disposable K-cups. (Yes, it is.) Show Notes: Read Joe's buying guide to find the best AeroPress coffee brewer, and check out his roundup of best cookbooks of 2023 (so far). Read all of Joe's food and kitchen coverage for WIRED. Recommendations: Joe recommends Craft Coffee: A Manual: Brewing a Better Cup at Home by Jessica Easto and Company: The Radically Casual Art of Cooking for Others by Amy Thielen. Lauren recommends giving honey as a gift and keeping a box cutter around the house. Mike recommends Mission Vegan: Wildly Delicious Food for Everyone by Danny Bowien and JJ Goode. Silicon Valley loves its disruption. If any industry was prepared to handle the monumental changes brought on by the coronavirus, it’s big tech. Companies like Twitter and Facebook were some of the first to require their employees to work from home, even before official shelter-in-place orders went into effect. Now, they and others have extended their remote work policies to allow their employees to telecommute from home forever, even after the pandemic ends. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED senior writer Arielle Pardes joins us to talk about the workplace goings-on in Silicon Valley. In the second half of the show, we discuss Clubhouse, the hot new social network keeping tech bigwigs connected. Does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? Well, Armando Flores walks both worlds. A renowned lowrider model (artist) and life size car builder, he gets to display his vision of the styles and colors he remembers from cruising down the streets of San Fernando Valley, in the 1970's and 1980's. Armando gives a vivid account of the early days of lowriding in the SFV and all the action going on. The paint jobs, the cruise spots and of course the cars. The part one of two interview with Armando had me holding back some tears, of sadness and joy. Speaking of his commitment to his loved ones and attempting to build his dream car, that actually had an even deeper meaning. Listen in as he recounts with vivid memory of the first encounter with the Lifestyle Car Club members and being hit with a ball by then President, Joe Ray.
Lowrider magazine, known for its coverage of ground-hugging vintage cars and the Mexican American community, issued its last print copy in December. First published in 1977 by three San Jose State University students, the magazine grew popular for highlighting not only Chicano car culture but social and political issues in Chicano communities as well. Lowrider still boasts a social media following of more than 4 million and its editor Joe Ray vows to continue chronicling lowrider culture online. We'll talk about the magazine's impact from the '70s to today.

*This a re-publication of a podcast we published earlier with an audio problem. Sorry about that! Original Text: Joe Ray learned to take 'clean shots' from François Simon, the legendary French food critic who was the inspiration for the character Anton Ego in Pixar's Ratatouille. Taking a 'clean shot is about writing an honest and straightforward review, but more importantly, it means really backing it up (especially if you are going to be critical). And that's exactly what Ray does in his writing about food and cooking tech for Wired. I sat down with Joe to talk about air fryers, Alexa, his review of the Mellow and writing for Simon. via Knit

A lot of old issues these too friends had come to the surface, and get a little ugly at times, in this very candid interview.
