What webs we weave, indeed! This episode we attempt to unknot that cross-over of the century - the NINETEENTH century that is - PRIDE AND PROMETHEUS by JOHN KESSEL. Mary Bennet decides to take one last crack at life before resigning herself to spinsterhood and two people wind up dead. That's what happens when you pin your hopes to the saddest Swiss nerd at the ball. Especially when they have the kind of baggage that is super tall, speaks at least three languages, has committed murder in the name of loneliness, and is technically their child. Do the major differences of "Frankenstein" and "Pride and Prejudice" boil down to imagination vs. domesticity? Where is the fascination of sex to be found without love and affection? What can be made of men talking about women talking about men? Trigger warnings - we talk about anatomy, sterilization, murder, and miscarriages in this episode.

In season one of Our Connected Culture we explore how late science fiction author Terry Bisson's lifelong activism was central to how he imagined a better world in his 1988 novel Fire on the Mountain, using previously unreleased and archival audio of Bisson and as well as interviews with friends and comrades including Peter Coyote, Kim Stanley Robinson, Annalee Newitz, Paul Park, Mary Corey, John Kessel, Cory Doctorow, Jacob Weisman, Rina Weisman, and Karen Brenchley. The episode features commentary from Kim Stanley Robinson, Annalee Newitz, Paul Park, John Kessel, Jacob Weisman, Rena Weisman, Karen Brenchley, Cory Doctorow, and Ramsey Kanaan talking about the role Terry played in creating progressive science fiction community. This is also the final book club episode for Fire on the Mountain, covering through the end of this an alternative history centering around a socialist utopia emerging in the U.S. South a hundred years after the success of the Harpers Ferry raid led by John Brown sets off a self-emancipating revolution. We're going to talk about Terry for two more weeks here at Our Connected Culture before closing up this season: Next week, we'll be sharing audio of Terry narrating The Left Left Behind, Terry's own contribution to the PM Press Outspoken Authors series he edited, that was shared with us by the publisher. (Thank you again to Ramsey and everyone else over there.) Then at the end of the month will have one last episode of this season to go deeper on Tomorrowing, the collection of Locus columns we talked about briefly today and during our first episode. We're also going to keep our virtual book club going, so you can join us to talk about Tomorrowing in our Discord for a live discussion at 1pm eastern time on May 26th! He started coaching at the Collegiate level in the USA in 1971 and led teams to National titles in 1986 and 1987. He was Team Leader for the 2000 USA Olympic Beach Volleyball Teams in Sydney, which brought home one gold medal, and for the 2004 USA Paralympic Women's Sitting Volleyball Team in Athens, which came home with the bronze medal. It as a coach and administrator though where he has had the most profound impact on the game. He worked for over 30 years at Volleyball USA and 20+ years at World ParaVolley. He is an author of over 12 books, including the IMPACT coaching manual which is now in its 33rd edition. He has been inducted in the Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame and in 2007 was named a Sport Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport. John consults to other Olympic Sports, well over 20 in fact, and travels around the world talking about coaching and in particular in the youth space. This was one of those interviews which I would classify as a master class. Among the many highlights som that resonated with me were: His view that the player who knows why they are doing something will beat the player who knows how to do something. The power of praise as a coach, and looking for ways to catch people doing the right things and reinforcing those. How one part of a coaches job is to help each individual within the team show competency and this does not necessarily have to be connected to skills required within the team, and how this strengthens the group. And How he defines success as a coach as never being an athletes last coach. If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at paul@thegreatcoachespodcast.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. Todd Rogers, Mark Fishman, John Kessel & Joe Rich are American volleyball coaches whose pedigree extends to the highest level of juniors, NCAA, professional indoor and beach volleyball, and the Olympic games (with Rogers winning a gold medal as a player). They are also the founders (and current board members) of "Beach Nation" - dedicated to teaching beach volleyball in a inclusive environment using their own curriculum, one developed by teachers, Olympians, US National Team coaches in a way where they prioritized teaching skill development and not just using drills to teach. 01:18 - The beauty of doubles on a global scale, logistically, strategically, more touches, size mattering less 09:52 - What does "Beach Nation" Bring to the table? 21:20 - developing a curriculum for best practices, process and technique 24:21 - the benefit of inclusiveness, and being open to new ideas 29:55 - Looking for more than just athletes: how does the player behave 38:00 - Interesting places traveled for clinics, and charitable function within the Beach Nation 49:49 - Sharing input with other coaches, player who will remember you years from now 52:27 - Never tell a kid what they can and can not do 59:05 - Not cutting corners on skill set, and the coaches responsibility 1:02:42 - Levels to this 1:07:23 - The skill that juniors learn the quickest, and the skill that is the most difficult 1:11:12 - Lightning rounds, and a fun story at the end NOTE: A little correction - Mark Fishman wanted to give credit and thanks to Trevor Regan (whom he called "Trevor Noah"). John Kessel (@JohnKesselUSAV) is the recently retired Director of Sport Development for USA Volleyball and one of the most sought after coach educators and sport developers in the world. John has been coaching since 1971 at the collegiate level or above, including Women's U.S. Open titles in 1986 & 1987, Disabled Programs, USA Deaf Olympic Teams, Starlings USA, National Parks and Recreation Assoc., the YMCA and over 30 other Affiliated Organizations working with USAV. He was Secretary of the NORCECA Technical and Coaches Commission, and Director of Development for World ParaVolley. He was Team Leader for the 2000 USA Olympic Beach Volleyball Teams in Sydney, which brought home one gold medal, and for the 2004 USA Paralympic Women's Sitting Volleyball Team in Athens, which came home with the bronze medal. In 1995, Volleyball Magazine's special Centennial issue named him one of the 50 most important people in the sport in the past 100 years. In 2013 the American Volleyball Coaches Association inducted him as their 60th member of the AVCA Coaches Hall of Fame.. A sought after international lecturer, he has conducted seminars in all 50 states, and in over 50 nations. In our discussion, first released in August 2017, John and John discuss the need for coaches to be vulnerable, adaptable, and always learning. As the opening quote of the podcast says, if your doctor practiced medicine the same way he or she did 5 years ago, it would be malpractice, yet why do so many coaches still coach the way they were coached 20-30 years ago? We discuss teaching through the game, why our parents did not hire a bike riding coach, and so much more. Get ready to take some notes! This week's podcast is brought to you by our friends at Sprocket Sports.  Sprocket Sports is a new software platform for youth sports clubs.  Yeah, there are a lot of these systems out there, but Sprocket provides the full enchilada. We touch upon not only his short fiction, but novels like The Moon and the Other and Pride and Prometheus, his early studies under James Gunn, his thematic anthologies co-edited with James Patrick Kelly, and what really happened in SF during the 1980s. As always, we'd like to thank John for taking the time to talk to us and hope you'll enjoy the episode.

The Dark Ride collects John Kessel's best short fiction, beginning with 1981's “Not Responsible! Park and Lock It!” and ending with 2021's “The Dark Ride.” The stories range from flash pieces to novellas, from comedy to existential horror, from far future SF to Kafkaesque fantasy, including 40,000 words of never-before-collected fiction and extensive author's notes. "Completely strange and idiosyncratic. His stories are singular experiences. ...They burst out of their texts with news that is strange, mysterious, beyond reason or parsing--beyond Kessel himself, it seems, who must have been as startled as anyone to see such sentences appear on his page. They are uncanny." --Kim Stanley Robinson, from his Introduction The Dark Ride collects John Kessel's best short fiction, beginning with 1981's "Not Responsible! Park and Lock It!" and ending with 2021's "The Dark Ride." The stories range from flash pieces to novellas, from comedy to existential horror, from far future SF to Kafkaesque fantasy, including 40,000 words of never-before-collected fiction and extensive author's notes. All his best are here, among them Nebula Award winners "Another Orphan" and "Pride and Prometheus," by the writer Sci-Fi Weekly called "quite possibly the best short story writer working in science fiction today." "...capable of the most artful and rigorous literary composition, but with a mischievious genius that inclines him toward speculative fiction... [Kessel] writes with subtlety and great wit...and his craftmanship is frequently absolutely brilliant. Plus, his sense of comedy is remarkable. --Publishers Weekly Buy the book here:  https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781645240587

Gary is back from the International Conference on the Fantastic in Orlando, where he chatted quite a bit with guests of honour John Kessel and Nike Sulway while managing to not attend some very interesting talks and panels. We touch upon the problems of identifying an SF audience in today's fluid environment, and the feeling of some older writers that their books may be no longer part of the overall discussion. But is there an overall discussion anymore? Has the SF readership atomized into so many different readerships, some more vertical than horizontal, that even when senior writers are still being read widely, it's difficult to find out who those readers are.  Have we gotten to the point of “everyone their own canon,” where only a handful of books each year make it into the general discussion of where SF is headed?

This week, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, we are joined by two authors whose own recent works celebrate that classic work.  John Kessel's Pride and Prometheus will be published in February, combining characters from Shelley's classic and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, while Theodora Goss's The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, featuring a number of classic characters from 19th century fantastic fiction—including Frankenstein's “daughter”--will be joined by its sequel European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman in July; both are part of her series "The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club.” We touch upon Shelley's work, the problems of writing narratives that exist within the spaces of earlier novels, whether or not Frankenstein was really the first science fiction novel, and—briefly—on the debt we all own to Ursula K. Le Guin after her passing earlier in the week. As always, our thanks to our guests, Dora and John. We hope you enjoy the episode. See you next week!

Normal service resumes with a rambly episode after last week's chat with Jane Yolen. Having decided what they were going to discuss beforehand, Gary and Jonathan immediately head off and start discussing something else altogether! It's a ramble, it's a chat, it's very much business as usual. Topics discussed this week include novellas, Kelly Robson's "Gods, Monsters and the Lucky Peach", the persistence of fairy tales in modern fantasy, and the new anthology Robots v. Fairies.  The frankly dodgy Western Australian internet connection didn't quite hold out until the end, so the chat ends a little short, though complete.   As always, we hope you enjoy the episode. Next week: John Kessel and Theodora Goss are scheduled to discuss their new novels and the fascination with Frankenstein.

Much to the disappointment of the listeners of Coach Your Brains Out and SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, there will be no Anchorman-esc battle between the two podcasts. We're now on the same team. That's right. VolleyballMag.com is now the distributor for both podcasts, which are as similar as they are different, both focusing on the same sport while diving into it in vastly dichotomous angles. Coach Your Brains Out began as many podcasts do: A few friends with a similar interest, an iPhone, and a bit of editing know-how. John Mayer, Billy Allen and Nils Nielsen put an iPhone on a table and just talked about whatever volleyball and coaching topics came to mind. Allen would edit, they'd post, and, as they joke frequently on the show, maybe a few people would even listen.    They enjoyed doing it. Soon, they realized more than a few actually enjoyed listening. The show expanded in every way a podcast could. The audience grew, the technology evolved from one iPhone to a few mics. Guests have been some of the top performers in their respective spaces, including the likes of volleyball legends Phil Dalhausser and Karch Kiraly, authors Joshua Medcalf and James Kerr, and coaches John Kessel and Tom Black, among dozens of others. It isn't just coaching they analyze, but traits and features of high performing individuals and teams, digging into the various recipes for greatness, both physiological and psychological. “Around the time we were starting it we were turned on to ideas like Train Ugly's website, a lot of ideas like motor learning and different ways to teach the game,” Allen said. “That was a lot of what sparked our first couple episode and we were fired up on that. Before we did the podcast it was fun to pick [John's] brain and just talk, that kind of stuff, and now we're still able to do that and get some great coaches from around the world too.” “We try to find people striving for mastery in whatever they do,” Mayer added. “Whatever ways we can find to be our best.” Coach Your Brains Out publishes on Thursdays, typically in 30-minute episodes.

Neurosurgeons say if they practiced the way they did 18 months ago, they’d be sued for malpractice. Heart surgeons believe if they practiced the way they did 5 years ago, they’d be sued for malpractice. Yet, in youth sport coaching we still practice the way we did when we were kids. John Kessel believes we should all be sued for malpractice because we have not evolved the game to meet the times. Do you agree? John Kessel of USA Volleyball discusses how to be a better coach by letting kids make mistakes and not punishing them for the mistakes. Mistakes are an important part of learning and independence. We also discuss how training ugly and making mistakes in practice is a great idea. John mentions that coaches often control practice so much that athletes really are good at practice but that translating what is learned in practice to competition is sometimes not very good. We discuss how to keep kids in sports and how some kids develop late. Rather than "cutting" kids, find another avenue for them to practice. We also discuss how small-sided games can be used to improve skills. We go off on tangents about motor learning, John Wooden and guitar playing YouTube stars.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the first 6 months of podcasts with us “In the Margins.” We’ve had some inspiring conversations with editors like Jeff Shotts from Graywolf Press, Crystal Simone Smith of Backbone Press, and Kevin Larimer, editor in chief of Poets & Writers Magazine. We’ve learned what it takes to get into a prestigious program like NC State’s Masters of Fine Arts in Creative writing from professors in poetry and fiction, Dorianne Laux and John Kessel. We’ve spoken with several poets and writers about their work, including breaking news about Therese Anne Fowler’s bestseller Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald and its adaptation into an Amazon TV series. We’re so glad you’ve listened along with us, and we hope you will continue to share in our conversations as we forward with the show. In fact, we’d like to bring to you an exciting endeavor that Tate Street has been working on diligently for the past several months. As part of our monthly episodes, we are thrilled to be airing documentaries from our work with the Favorite Poem Project. For many of you, this might sound familiar. In Episode 6: Tate Street goes to AWP, we unveil the project, and then in Episode 9, we showcase Hayan Charara reading “Out, Out—“ by Robert Frost. These short, comfortable bursts of poetry are complemented by the reader’s personal connection to the poem. Some readers talk about the honesty of fear in parenthood, the watershed moment in which one realized that they could be a poet, the search for love across distance and boundaries of culture or space—these stories all take place in the Favorite Poem Project Documentaries that we will bring to you on “In the Margins.” Don’t worry, our in-depth interviews will alternate with our FPP segments. Most of all, though, we are happy to be able to share a broad range of voices, experiences, and viewpoints through this partnership. We invite you to gather and share this podcast with your fellow writers, family, and friends. How does a writer improve? In this episode, two prominent writers and writing professors from North Carolina State University’s graduate program in creative writing share their insight into the creative process. With over 50 years of teaching experience between them, poet Dorianne Laux and fiction writer John Kessel offer advice to all levels of writers, reminding us to always try “once more, with feeling.”   Podcast Notes:   Writing allows people to open the mind and the heart. Encourages expression of things that are not encouraged in their social groups. Teaches people how to express themselves. We all have some capacity to write and to respond to it. Program Director and poet, Dorianne Laux and John Kessell, a member of the fiction faculty, pull back the curtain to the admissions process for the MFA program at NC State and give us insight into the landscape of emerging writers today.   Podcast Notes:   The Master of Fine Arts, or MFA, in Creative Writing at NC State is a is a “two-year program of workshops, literature courses and electives, culminating in a final thesis of literary work worthy of publication.”   To give us more insight into the MFA at NC State, we are joined by two award-winning authors: the program’s current director, poet Dorianne Laux (who has published five collections of poetry including most recently: Facts about the Moon and The Book of Men), and two-time Nebula Award-winning science fiction writer John Kessel (who also helped found the MFA program).   North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) Creative Writing Master of the Fine Arts: http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/graduate/mfa Creative Writing Undergraduate Major: http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/   North Carolina State University Creative Writing Faculty: Dorianne Laux (Poetry): http://doriannelaux.net John Kessel (Fiction): http://johnjosephkessel.wix.com/kessel-website Wilton Barnhardt (Fiction): http://www.wiltonbarnhardt.com Jill McCorkle (Fiction):  http://jillmccorkle.com John Balaban (Poetry):  http://www.johnbalaban.com   Former Students/Visiting Writers Therese Anne Fowler: http://thereseannefowler.com   Visiting Writers Reading at NC State   Gibbons Ruark: http://www.faculty.english.udel.edu/ruark/ Eduardo Corral: http://eduardocorral.com Allan Gurganus: http://www.allangurganus.com   Producers: Ray Crampton and Abigail Browning Produced by: tatestreet.orghttp://tatestreet.org Music Provided by: Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five featuring Hilary Alexanderhttp://www.campusfive.com Podcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tatestreetorg Podcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/tatestreetorg Podcast Email: mailto:writeus@tatestreet.org
