Joshua Medcalf is a multi-faceted, thoughtful, self-aware guy. One of the more remarkable things about him is he dropped out of his Master’s program at Duke University, skipped scholarships to law school, and moved across the country into a homeless shelter to serve people. He’s written many books, including the fable 'Chop Wood, Carry Water.' He’s started businesses. He’s lectured. He’s worked with high-profile collegiate sports programs. He has spent a great deal of time helping to develop mental toughness in those he has worked with and for. He and I dive deep into the topic.

I put it on the list and then quickly read that one and 2 more. Since reading his books, they have become the most gifted books of the year. I gave them to my children, friends and people I work with. Each of the recipients have as impressed with them as I was. We also had some other interests in common. Joshua recently returned from an Inner Mountain Excursion in Norway to learn more about the Wim Hof Method and much more. We're now on the same team. That's right. VolleyballMag.com is now the distributor for both podcasts, which are as similar as they are different, both focusing on the same sport while diving into it in vastly dichotomous angles. Coach Your Brains Out began as many podcasts do: A few friends with a similar interest, an iPhone, and a bit of editing know-how. John Mayer, Billy Allen and Nils Nielsen put an iPhone on a table and just talked about whatever volleyball and coaching topics came to mind. Allen would edit, they'd post, and, as they joke frequently on the show, maybe a few people would even listen. They enjoyed doing it. Soon, they realized more than a few actually enjoyed listening. Joshua Medcalf is a former Division I soccer player who graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in communications. He went on to study under one of the top sport psychologists in the country at Duke University, while playing out his last year of eligibility. He started a non-profit organization that focuses on training at-risk athletes in the heart of the south central housing projects in Los Angeles, California. In order to help fund his organization he created Train to be Clutch, in which he teaches the same life changing principles to athletes, businessmen, actors, and universities all over the world.
