* Throwback It was just brought to our attention that only 3 minutes of this episode ended up loading on Spotify & Apple so I am reposting because even though it's an oldie, it's a goodie. Enjoy. In this episode from 2021, mental health advocates Shaley Hoogendoorn and Julie Kraft discuss the importance of language. Words absolutely matter- they have the power to hurt or heal. Too often, mental health terms, even actual diagnoses, are loosely thrown around in everyday conversation. How many of us have heard the phrase, “The weather is sooo bipolar!” or heard ‘OCD' used as an adjective to describe a tidy person? Listen in as Julie and Shaley take a gentle and nonjudgemental look at specific terminology often misused (even, admittedly, by them!) They'll also explain how and why it can be so harmful. It is Shaley and Julie's greatest hope that this episode will help bring awareness to the words we use and the power they have! *TRIGGER WARNING: mentions language surrounding suicide To my listeners, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here. #79 Ya know marketing isn't all about selling more products or making people aware of your service. Sometimes marketing is meant for the greater good. On this episode of OAP, Kurt and Pat sit down with Julie Kraft and Erika Edmiston. Two dedicated women working hard to Keep Wyoming Wild & Beautiful! Trying to keep invasive species at bay is not an easy task. And why exactly is that important to all of us? Simply put, invasive species harm the environment and wildlife by taking over habitats and resources from native species. This can result in changes to food chains and ecosystems, making it harder for native plants and animals to survive. We find out how Erika, Julie, and the entire WWPC team go about their jobs – whether it's actually in the weeds out in the field battling invasive head-on, through education, and even marketing their message to audiences (oh yeah, we cover marketing and brand on this one as well). While our guests may live, work and play in the Cowboy State, this episode is relevant to wherever you call home. Come and have a listen … who knows, this episode just might encourage you to learn more about invasive species and how you can help in your own backyard. So if you have a craving for drugs or alcohol, for example, even during the pandemic, it's been a little bit out of control, of course. We'll talk about that I hope. You know mindfulness just tells you to be in the present moment, slow down, breathe.9: 40 This is an ongoing practice of continually taking the negative thoughts that are agitating you, affecting you negatively and moving them through. Thoughts aren't permanent. Feelings aren't permanent.16:00 In fact, addiction in the justice system is between 50 and 80% of folks who are incarcerated, have a substance abuse problem. So any clinician out there you're going to be dealing with folks who've been in the justice system if you're dealing with addiction. 17: 46 Usually there's softer emotions underneath that are being kind of protected, like feeling sad, hurt some of these softer emotions. Along with bringing it into the room, we also want you to bring patients into the room. My feeling is that stuck emotions really need your attention and they also need to have that kind of, that yin yang of self-compassion and patience.22:20 A lapse is not a relapse. So if someone lapses to a substance I would recommend that they remind themselves that a lapse is a one-time, you know, falling off the wagon kind of thing, where you'd use a drug or alcohol, and then you realize, oh my god, let me get back on the horse. Let me, let me get back on track.21:30 I would just want to convey to folks your listeners that call it a lapse, move into the lapse. If you have a lapse and get, go back to your wellness basket and return to the things that make you feel the strongest.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. Depression and anxiety turn up in several mental illnesses. Yet when there's a definite mood cycle -- when one energy level of mood becomes apparent, either a too up or too down, and then another eventually takes it place -- this can earn the diagnosis of Bipolar II Disorder if certain criteria are met. I'll talk about what Bipolar II is exactly and relay the stories of two people with Bipolar Disorder, Julie Kraft and Jennifer Marshall, both well-known advocates for talking openly about mental illness. And I'll focus on what are termed "triggers" and how to manage them, so that you learn how to take care of yourself during those times. Our listener email is from a man in South America whose perfectionism drove him to try every new self-help technique out there, leaving him exhausted and confused. Maybe we should call it an addiction -- "self-helpism." His question is very thought-provoking and I hope you'll enjoy and learn from it. This week are Rebecca Williams and Julie Kraft, authors of The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction: A Guide to Coping with the Grief, Stress and Anger that Trigger Addictive Behaviors. Most addictive behavior is rooted in some type of loss, be it the death of a loved one, coming to terms with limitations set by chronic health problems, or the end of a relationship. By turning to drugs and alcohol, people who have suffered a loss can numb their grief. In the process, they postpone their healing and can drive themselves further into addiction.
