As Chelsea started to establish themselves at the top end of English football with a flurry of major honours in the late 1990s, change was awaiting them on the horizon. The Blues had not long fielded the Premier League's first starting XI that featured overseas players only. It was symbolic of English football's transition to becoming more cosmopolitan, but the appointment of Claudio Ranieri in September 2000 saw the Italian take things back to their roots... he wanted to build his Chelsea team around a spine of homegrown talent. Step forward from the Chelsea youth ranks John Terry, a player whose career was at a crossroads. Within one match, Ranieri identified the talent that would lead Chelsea all the way to becoming European champions. And alongside him, another youngster from across London, Frank Lampard. Chelsea's journey on the road to Munich 2012 was just starting. This episode takes you behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge to understand how Ranieri and Colin Hutchinson lay the foundations for Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho to build a dynasty. It's a story played out before the threat of financial ruin and one game that changed it all against Liverpool in May 2003. In this episode you will hear from: John Terry, Ken Bates, Claudio Ranieri, Colin Hutchinson, Ruud Gullit, Glenn Hoddle, Frank Leboeuf, David Lee, Tore Andre Flo, Jody Morris, Jesper Gronkjaer, Neil Barnett (Spy), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea FC historian) and Alex Leith (Ranieri's translator). Glenn Hoddle spent three years rebuilding Chelsea into a club that had genuine ambition and a legitimate hope of winning silverware. He signed Ruud Gullit in 1995 to completely transform the look and appeal of the Chelsea squad. But just as he was getting ready to take the next step with the Blues, England came calling. And Hoddle couldn't deny the call of his country, so would leave Chelsea. It was the summer of Euro '96 and Chelsea found themselves at those fabled crossroads once more. Where was the club headed - with George Graham as manager? Or with another exciting young talent in the dugout in the form of Ruud Gullit? Whatever decision Chelsea would make, the club's journey would fork in dramatically different directions. Fortunately, they chose right and major silverware was waiting just around the corner after a 26-year wait. Although it would all play out to the backdrop of tragedy. In this episode you will hear from: Roberto Di Matteo, Eddie Newton, Ruud Gullit, Jesper Gronkjaer, Colin Hutchinson, Ken Bates, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Clarke, David Lee, Scott Minto, David Cooper (Matthew Harding's lawyer), Mike Ingham (commentator), Martin Tyler (commentator), Mark Killick (Matthew Harding's best friend), Tim Rolls (author and Chelsea fan), Joel Harding, Luke Harding and former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football

In just two years, Glenn Hoddle had taken Chelsea from the doldrums of the Premier League to a European semi-final. It was April 1995 and Real Zaragoza stood between the Blues and a match-up with London rivals Arsenal in the Cup Winners' Cup final. Chelsea would lose that tie 4-3 on aggregate but, importantly, that European campaign ignited something in the Chelsea manager and managing director, Colin Hutchinson. They had seen the future and what was possible with a club like Chelsea. And that future was now: the Bosman Ruling was coming and it opened the transfer market for the Blues to become the first English club to really exploit it. Enter Ruud Gullit, the Ballon d'Or winner and Dutch legend who would be the first in a long line of Bosman signings that would help send Chelsea to the top of the Premier League. This is the story of how Gullit helped awaken a sleeping giant of English football. In this episode you will hear from: Ken Bates, Colin Hutchinson, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Martin Tyler (commentator), Clive Batty (Journalist), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea historian), Andy Saunders (The Chels), Tim Rolls (Chelsea fan and author) and Neil Barnett, AKA "Spy". The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football

When Glenn Hoddle arrived at Chelsea in 1993, he thought he was becoming the manager of a Premier League club. He soon found out the Blues were in name only. Hoddle had stepped into a club that was years behind its rivals and needed to dramatically improve standards. From player recruitment to the playing style and basics such as nutrition and how the team trained. It was a new dawn at Chelsea and Hoddle had it all to do. This is the story of how Hoddle did it. Stamford Chidge and Mark Worrall interview Chelsea season ticket holder Paul Ride about his book 'Ride to Hell'.Born and bred in Chelsea, Chelsea season ticket holder, Paul Ride, a trained chef, was working as a contract catering manager in Kuwait in the early 1990s. He was initially assigned to a company tasked with extinguishing oil well fires started by the Iraq military in 1991 as they retreated from the country due to the advance of United States-led Gulf War coalition forces.June 28th 1992 began like every other day for Ride. An early morning start to deliver packed lunches and pick up bread from a bakery. A delay left him with time to kill so he decided to visit an old colleague working at a United Nations facility in northern Kuwait close to the border with Iraq – a border he was coerced into crossing by a gun-toting Iraqi soldier.Accused of spying, Ride was taken hostage and repeatedly interrogated by the Mukhabarat, Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein's murderous secret police. Eventually charged with illegal entry, he was sentenced to seven years in jail and transferred to Abu Ghraib, a notorious maximum-security prison close to Baghdad.‘Ride To Hell: Prisoner Of A Dubious Peace' is Paul Ride's gripping first-hand account of his traumatic incarceration, its devastating personal consequences, and his ongoing quest for justice, compensation, and an understanding of why the UK Government seemingly allowed him to fall through the diplomatic cracks that existed at that time.Throughout this hellish experience, Paul still managed to find out what Chelsea's (often poor!) results were thanks to the BBC World Service and letters from supporters who had been alerted to his plight through the media and Ken Bates who encouraged supporters to correspond with him.The book can be purchased from Amazon clicking on this link https://amzn.to/3GiS5Jl Hosted on Acast. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to look back at a frustrating draw against Everton at the Bridge. In part one we ask why did Potter shut up shop at 1-0? Was it Brightonesque or an attempt at game management? We look at the substitutions. Gallagher for Pulisic? Why not Mudryk? Cheek for Kovacic and Chalobah for Fofana - understandable but Chukwuemeka for Felix? In part two we look at the poor defending by Koulibaly and Kepa's errors for Everton's 2nd goal. The result was frustrating and felt like a defeat and it seems like when Chelsea don't win the negativity starts. In a typically forthright and up front interview Kerry talks to Martin King & Stamford Chidge about his career at Chelsea; his relationship with Ken Bates; playing for England; his best goals and what it was like to hear 40,000 Chelsea supporters chanting “One Kerry Dixon” at Wembley when he was playing for Luton! With 193 goals to his name, Kerry Dixon is Chelsea's third highest goal scorer of all time, behind only Bobby Tambling and Frank Lampard. Over nine seasons between 1983 and 1992, Kerry became one of the best loved players ever to appear for Chelsea.Following near relegation to the Third Division Kerry joined from Reading for £175,000 as John Neal sought to rebuild the team, Kerry scored 34 goals in his first season as Chelsea claimed the Second Division title.Scoring an iconic goal against Arsenal at Highbury in Chelsea's first match back in the top flight, Kerry scored 36 goals to win the Golden Boot and took his Chelsea tally to 70 in just 101 games, earning a call up to the England squad in the process. Kerry was given a start against West Germany and responded by creating a goal for Bryan Robson before scoring two of his own as England beat the Germans for the first time in over a decade.A serious muscle injury in January 1986 hampered both Kerry and Chelsea's tilt at winning the title and a mere two years later, Chelsea found themselves back in Division two. Although player unrest nearly led to Kerry's departure, Chelsea and Kerry bounced back with Kerry scoring 25 league goals as he won the Second Division title for the second time. Kerry went on to score 26 goals on Chelsea's return to Division One as we finished fifth, our highest position since 1970.In March 1992, Kerry's 193rd, and final, goal in a Chelsea shirt was a a spectacular shot from the edge of the box to beat Norwich City. That summer he was sold for £575, 000 to SouthamptonBut that wasn't quite the final moment in the love affair between Chelsea and Kerry Dixon. When Chelsea faced Luton Town and Wembley for the 1994 FA Cup semi-final, lining up at centre-forward for Luton that day was a certain Kerry Dixon. At the end of the match that Chelsea won 2-0, Chelsea supporters massed broke off from their celebrations to pay a final tribute to one of the club's favourite sons, 40, 000 voices rightly proclaiming that there really was ‘only one Kerry Dixon'. A fitting tribute to a true Chelsea legend. With 193 goals in total to his name, Dixon is Chelsea's third highest goal scorer of all time, behind only Bobby Tambling and Frank Lampard. He is also eighth in the club's all-time appearances list. His two Second Division championship medals being his only honours with the club. Hosted on Acast. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Dan Silver and Mark Meehan to look back at the 1992-93 season. The 1992-93 season saw the launch of the much-awaited Premier League and the end of football as we knew it! Changes included the dulcet tones of Richard Keys and Andy Gray, Referees in green shirts and the change to the back pass law with much panic among the goalkeeping fraternity who now had to clear the ball rather than pick it up. There were changes for Chelsea too as Ken Bates spent big in the transfer market bringing in Robert Fleck for £2.1m and Mick Harford among several others.Being Chelsea there was little change on the pitch. Punching well above their weight for the first half of the season, Chelsea found themselves 2nd in the League in December. The second half of the season saw the inevitable with the wheels coming off. Knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round and a quarter-final defeat in the Coca-Cola Cup to Crystal Palace led to a run of 12 games without a win and a slide to 11th in the table.Inevitably manager Ian Porterfield was sacked and surprisingly replaced by 1970 Cup winning legend David Webb. Webb steadied the ship and Chelsea finished a respectable 11th but there was disappointment that we hadn't achieved more given the quality of the squad and the excellent start. In many respects the season was overshadowed by the career ending injury inflicted on star defender Paul Elliot by the odious Dean Saunders in the match against Liverpool at Anfield early in the season. The 1992-93 season, with the launch of the Premier League, had a real ‘looking to the future' feel, ably assisted by RBS handing Chelsea a 20-year lease with an option to buy Stamford Bridge. The decks were about to be cleared for Chelsea's Blue revolution and Chelsea and football were never to be the same again. To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Dan Silver to look back at the 1990-91 season.Chelsea supporters went in to the 1990-91 season buoyed by the record signings of Denis Wise and Andy Townsend. Ken Bates appeared to showing some ambition. But the campaign never got going and Chelsea finished a disappointing 10th place, an early exit in round 3 of the FA Cup and a League Cup semi-final defeat to old rivals Sheffield Wednesday. As has always been the case with Chelsea and glorious unpredictability they did inflict the only defeat in the season on eventual champions Arsenal as well as doing the double over Man Utd and beating league runners up Liverpool 4-2 in the final home match of the season. They also beat Spurs at home and in the League Cup – nothing new about that though! Chelsea could live with the best but inconsistency was the issue. Most of the pieces were there but not necessarily in the right places and there were some horrible dips in form. The top scorers were Kerry Dixon & Gordon Durie with 15 goals; Dave Beasant was top appearance maker with 45 and Player of the Year was Andy Townsend. The future looked bright with many home-grown prospects in David Lee; Gareth Hall; Frank Sinclair; Jason Cundy; Graeme Le Saux; Graham Stuart; Damien Matthew; Craig Burley all playing a significant part in theseason. The future of English football was interesting with the FA announcing the ‘Blueprint for Football' which heralded the creation of the Premier League in June 1991.To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. These past weeks my aunt told me she listens to them all, the daughter of an old friend said she's been listening for years, and Jimmy Clare reached out to me on LinkedIn asking me to interview him.  How did you find me? Scoops of ice cream and chopped liver- both familiar but don't mix well. Introducing Jimmy Clare and Crazy Fitness Guy Since I'd never met or heard of Jimmy when he messaged me, I started following him on LinkedIn and scheduled a call.  When we first chatted, I couldn't feel a connection until he started telling me about being in college and his business,

Arsenal provided a tantalising taste of the chaos to come this weekend last night. Marcus, Vish and Luke are here to put it under the spotlight - warts and all - on today’s episode of The Preview Show, sponsored by Betway! We discuss Chris Wilder’s mooted exit - far from ideal preparation for facing a pizza-fuelled, pint-filled Jamie Vardy on Sunday. We also look forward to West Ham’s visit to Old Trafford and Vish’s dust-up with Declan Rice – though, in any event, Man United fans will surely be comforted by the news of Avram Glazer’s latest business move. And we go north of the border for huge developments at Aberdeen and for some reason check in with Ken Bates.Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@footballramble.com.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Leeds United are one of the most decorated football clubs in England with a dazzling history. This episode we cover some of the stories that Leeds fans wish would have been kept under wraps. Nick Harris opens the door to some of the most outrageous years in history books of Leeds United.  We are talking the attempted sacking of Brian McDermott at half time via the phone, outrageous spending habits and goldfish monthly wages?!  From Peter Ridsdale's financial gambles, through the turbulent Ken Bates era, the infamous GFH takeover and the crazy Cellino times, we pull back the  curtain on one of the most unbelievable stories in football ownership.

The international break = dull dull dull. However, Jermaine’s thrown open his contacts book and nabbed an interview with one of the most successful Leeds managers in recent history, Simon Grayson. The guys talk to Simon about his playing days, leading the Whites to promotion from League One and the memorable FA Cup win over Manchester United (plus his own take on THAT winning goal by a certain striker). Simon also gives us his damning assessment of managing Jermaine, and the guys try to get to the lowdown on life working under Ken Bates. Give us a follow on @DoingALeedsPod and keep those reviews coming!
