Were Sampdoria the Greatest One-Off Champions of Serie A?In this episode of By Far The Greatest Team, hosts Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney and joined by Phil Craig to relive the golden era of Sampdoria between 1988 and 1992—a time when the Genovese club shook up Italian football. The conversation captures the tactical brilliance, offbeat charisma, and enduring legacy of a side that defied the odds and challenged Italy's traditional giants.Takeaways:• Sampdoria's 1990–91 title win was built on defensive discipline and attacking flair.• Vialli and Mancini formed one of Serie A's most iconic partnerships.• Boškov's management style blended humour, discipline, and tactical intelligence.• The club's identity—colourful kits, loyal fans, and bold play—set them apart in Italian football.• The near-miss in the 1992 European Cup Final against Barcelona remains a poignant moment.• Sampdoria's rise and fall reflect the volatility of football success and the impact of strong leadership.• Their legacy lives on in Football Italia nostalgia and 90s football culture.

Things might not have been very pretty, but Juventus has taken advantage of Napoli's first slip up and moved into second place in Serie A entering this week's big showdown in Naples. On this week's episode of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss: Juve keep winning! Takeaways from the first week back in action after a month and a half away due to the World Cup — including how it might not be about how you start the season but how you rebound from it, why Juve's play still might have us a little trepidatious about things, and holy bleeping bleep that assist from Federico Chiesa. Seriously, Juve keep winning! As nice as it is to see Juve keep winning games and adding to the winning streak, just how sustainable is this brand of football knowing that much more attack-minded opponents are coming up on the schedule. What a win (or a draw) against Napoli would mean for Juventus, its Scudetto chances and for the rest of the top of the Serie A table. Federico Chiesa is back, his assist against Udinese most certainly shows that, and he's obviously going to be vital for Juve's success going forward in Serie A and the Europa League. With Arek Milik's goal on Wednesday against Cremonese, Juve have another free kick option that we didn't necessarily knew they had before that game. Twitter questions — including how Juventus can generate some more offense and what it will take to do that, has Max Allegri's recent run of success made up for the beginning to the season and the Champions League struggles, and if Danilo has proven to be the best piece of business Fabio Paratici did during his time in Turin. Following the tragic passing of Luca Vialli, here's another chance to hear my interview with the great man from season two. I'll record a personal tribute later today.ThanksG************Here's another chance to hear my interview with Gianluca Vialli from season two.Gianluca was my favourite footballer during the 1990s, and I had the honour of getting to know him at his peak. He graced Serie A with his goals during a golden age of Italian club football, winning the league and getting to three European finals with Vujadin Boskov's Sampdoria – an unfancied club who caught the imagination with their togetherness and sheer will to will. At Juventus, Luca played amid a mouth-watering array of talent, as part of the Turin side's Tridente attack, culminating in a Champions League win on his final game. We hear about how coach Marcello Lippi's pressing, offensive style at Juve broke the mould of the Italian approach. Gianluca also gives incredible insights into his time at Chelsea – falling out of favour with Ruud Gullit, replacing Gullit as boss, and then his shock and anger at his own unmerited sacking. My friends, it's simply one of the best Big Interviews ever. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We kept in touch throughout the years and this is my tribute to a very special man. Grahamp.s. Here's my 2016 Big Interview with Luca Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
