In this podcast I explore the fascinating phenomenon of synaesthesia. Using the enlightening book by Richard Cytowic and David Eagleman titled Wednesday is Indigo Blue as template, I discuss the different types and manifestations of the condition, and I highlight the current understanding of its genesis. As I review its associated advantages, such as a superior memory, I also discuss its downsides, such as physical pain. To illustrate the lived experience of synaesthesia, I deploy such historical anecdotes as that of Solomon Shereshevky as narrated by neurologist Alexander Luria in his book titled The Mind of a Mnemonist. This remarkable case showed how synaesthesia contributes to superior memory. I also use contemporary memoirs of syanesthesia, such as that of Daniel Tammett titled Born on a Blue Day, and that of physician Joel Salinas titled Mirror Touch. Other helpful sources for the podcast are Cytowic's The Man Who Tasted Shapes, and Guy Leschziner's The Man Who Tasted Words.

Ever wondered what Foreigner's biggest hit was? Or why they were called Foreigner in the first place? Maybe you'd like to know if there are any original members left and what happened to their lead singer? Did you see the band finally being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? All of these questions and more answered this week as Foreigner co-founder Al Greenwood joins us for a chat. Al is best known as the keyboardist of the iconic rock band Foreigner, formed in 1976 alongside Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, Ed Gagliardi, and Dennis Elliott. His classical training and experience in jazz and progressive rock were essential in crafting the band's sound, which blended hard rock with sophisticated keyboard arrangements. During his time with Foreigner, Al contributed to the band's first three multi-platinum albums: "Foreigner" (1977), "Double Vision" (1978), and "Head Games" (1979). He co-wrote several of the band's hit songs, including the classic tracks "Cold As Ice" and "Blue Morning, Blue Day." After parting ways with Foreigner in 1980, Al didn't step away from the music scene. He went on to co-found the band Spys in 1981, a group known for their blend of rock, pop, and new wave influences. With Spys, Al continued to showcase his skills as a songwriter and keyboardist, releasing two albums that received critical acclaim for their innovative sound. Beyond his work with that band, he became a sought-after session musician, arranger, and producer, contributing to various artists across different genres. Al's work in the music industry also expanded into composing for film and television, where his versatility allowed him to create scores that resonated with a wide audience. His legacy with Foreigner, combined with his later projects, has cemented his reputation as a pioneering figure in rock music, particularly in integrating synthesizers into the genre. Today he plays with the 'new' Foreigner with singer Kelly Hansen out front. He says they're an act to behold. Al also tells us that the biggest thrill of his life has been the original band's induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame very recently and although it's long overdue, he's incredibly proud to have finally been recognised for the contribution that Foreigner made to the rock sound of the '70s. I hope you'll enjoy my chat with Al as he unravels much abut one of our best loved band's history.

October is a month of many observances in St Lucia and Arthritis Awareness is one of them. World Arthritis Day (WAD), was established in 1996 and is held annually on October 12th. The purpose of this day is to bring awareness to this disease, highlighting its impact and ways of prevention and management. The theme for this year is, ‘Living with an RMD (rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease) At All Stages of Life'. Arthritis is a non-communicable, often chronic and sometimes degenerative disease that impacts quality of life, sometimes rendering persons incapable of normal movement and leading to disability. The signs of arthritis include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, warmth and loss of mobility/function. Most people think all arthritis is the same, but there are over 100 types of arthritis known. A large part of the world's population is affected by this disease and St. Lucia is no different. In the US between 2016-2018 it was estimated that about 24% of the population had been diagnosed with some type of arthritis. That is to say for every 4 persons 1 was diagnosed with arthritis. Arthritis accounts for one of the largest causes of disability worldwide and poses a heavy burden on our society. We know that almost everyone has heard of or experienced arthritis in some form or another. However, the understanding of the different types and how management and complications can vary, may not be well known to most. The most commonly known types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (about 530 million people worldwide in 2019) and rheumatoid arthritis (about 18 million). However, there are also important causes like lupus, gout, fibromyalgia, sexually transmitted infections, spondyloarthritis and juvenile arthritis among others. The treatment of each varies across the board. While arthritis mostly affects persons older than 55, as well as women, children can also get arthritis; and some causes like Gout, are more common in men. As with most NCDs there are preventable and non-preventable risk factors. For arthritis, the preventable ones include: not smoking, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, little or no alcohol consumption, avoiding joint injuries, safe sex practices. This month, SLALA will begin arthritis awareness activities with a church service at the St. Benedict Parish on Morne Fortune at 8:30am. Arthritis will be the focus of the SLMDA talk show HealthWise on Wednesday 11th October. The SLALA will also be sharing facts about arthritis and its management on its Facebook and Instagram pages. On World Arthritis Day, Thursday 12th October, we hope you would join us in raising awareness by wearing something blue, wherever you are. And finally, on Thursday October 19th and 26th, we invite you to Get Moving for Arthritis - Sneaker Thursdays by wearing your sneakers, along with something blue. You can share your photos or videos of you moving with us by using the hashtags #wad, #wearblueforarthritis and #getmoving on our social media pages. Exercise and movement are an integral part of preventing and treating arthritis, so we hope you will join us. This is also part of our own contribution to the Ministry of Health's Let's Move St Lucia Campaign. Please follow SLALA on Facebook and Instagram for more details on the month's activities and also information on arthritis throughout the month. Help us make arthritis more visible, but less critical by becoming more physical. Don't forget to wear your blue this Thursday.  Happy World Arthritis Day!

As Chelsea started to establish themselves at the top end of English football with a flurry of major honours in the late 1990s, change was awaiting them on the horizon. The Blues had not long fielded the Premier League's first starting XI that featured overseas players only. It was symbolic of English football's transition to becoming more cosmopolitan, but the appointment of Claudio Ranieri in September 2000 saw the Italian take things back to their roots... he wanted to build his Chelsea team around a spine of homegrown talent. Step forward from the Chelsea youth ranks John Terry, a player whose career was at a crossroads. Within one match, Ranieri identified the talent that would lead Chelsea all the way to becoming European champions. And alongside him, another youngster from across London, Frank Lampard. Chelsea's journey on the road to Munich 2012 was just starting. This episode takes you behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge to understand how Ranieri and Colin Hutchinson lay the foundations for Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho to build a dynasty. It's a story played out before the threat of financial ruin and one game that changed it all against Liverpool in May 2003. Glenn Hoddle spent three years rebuilding Chelsea into a club that had genuine ambition and a legitimate hope of winning silverware. And Hoddle couldn't deny the call of his country, so would leave Chelsea. It was the summer of Euro '96 and Chelsea found themselves at those fabled crossroads once more. Where was the club headed - with George Graham as manager? Or with another exciting young talent in the dugout in the form of Ruud Gullit? Whatever decision Chelsea would make, the club's journey would fork in dramatically different directions. Fortunately, they chose right and major silverware was waiting just around the corner after a 26-year wait. Although it would all play out to the backdrop of tragedy. In this episode you will hear from: Roberto Di Matteo, Eddie Newton, Ruud Gullit, Jesper Gronkjaer, Colin Hutchinson, Ken Bates, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Clarke, David Lee, Scott Minto, David Cooper (Matthew Harding's lawyer), Mike Ingham (commentator), Martin Tyler (commentator), Mark Killick (Matthew Harding's best friend), Tim Rolls (author and Chelsea fan), Joel Harding, Luke Harding and former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football

In just two years, Glenn Hoddle had taken Chelsea from the doldrums of the Premier League to a European semi-final. It was April 1995 and Real Zaragoza stood between the Blues and a match-up with London rivals Arsenal in the Cup Winners' Cup final. Chelsea would lose that tie 4-3 on aggregate but, importantly, that European campaign ignited something in the Chelsea manager and managing director, Colin Hutchinson. They had seen the future and what was possible with a club like Chelsea. And that future was now: the Bosman Ruling was coming and it opened the transfer market for the Blues to become the first English club to really exploit it. Enter Ruud Gullit, the Ballon d'Or winner and Dutch legend who would be the first in a long line of Bosman signings that would help send Chelsea to the top of the Premier League. This is the story of how Gullit helped awaken a sleeping giant of English football. In this episode you will hear from: Ken Bates, Colin Hutchinson, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit, Martin Tyler (commentator), Clive Batty (Journalist), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea historian), Andy Saunders (The Chels), Tim Rolls (Chelsea fan and author) and Neil Barnett, AKA "Spy". The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football

As Chelsea faced Barcelona in the 2004/05 Champions League, the club was about to navigate unchartered waters. Jose Mourinho and his men were disrupting the European game and the continent's elite didn't like it one bit. Come the end of the Blues' Last-16 clash, UEFA labelled them as the "Enemies of Football", referee Anders Frisk retired from the game on account of death threats and a modern rivalry between Chelsea and the Catalan giants was born. Mourinho and his new club had arrived on the biggest stage. The Roman Abramovich era at Stamford Bridge had suddenly gone international. Things would never be the same again. This is the inside story of how it all happened. In this episode you will hear from: Steve Clarke, Frank Lampard, Tore Andre Flo, Frank Leboeuf, Jody Morris, Colin Hutchinson, Simon Johnson (The Athletic), Peter Drury (Commentator), David "Stamford Chidge" Chidgey (Chelsea Fancast), Rick Glanvill (Chelsea FC Historian) and Martin Tyler (Commentator). Matthew Harding is a significant and important figure in the history Chelsea Football Club after his investments into the Blues in the 1990s helped the club to scale new heights. Much has been made of the so-called "Battle for Stamford Bridge" between Harding and former Chelsea owner, Ken Bates. But little is known or spoken about with regard to Harding outside of this. Who was he? What was he like? How did his friends and family see him? Through extensive conversations with those closest to him, The Blueprint is bringing to light the persona and the humanity of the man that was Matthew Harding. In this first episode of "The Matthew Harding Tapes", we speak with David Cooper, who was Harding's confidante and lawyer who oversaw the inquest in his death following a tragic helicopter accident in October 1996. David sheds light on Harding's various business delaings and brings us into the life of the former Chelsea vice-chairman. *** The full eight-part narrative series of The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football will follow "The Matthew Harding Tapes" on 31 May 2023 as we tell the inside story of modern Chelsea. Mark Killick was best friends with Matthew Harding, the pair finding kinship owing to a shared love for Chelsea Football Club. Killick was also an executor of Harding's will following his tragic death in October 1996 and speaks publicly with The Blueprint for the first time. In a varied interview, Killick provides new insight to Harding's hopes and ambitions for Chelsea, including making the Blues the preeminent club in London and the Premier League. Harding also sought new investment for Chelsea, which Killick explains may well have involved the billionaire owner of Virgin, Richard Branson. *** The full eight-part narrative series of The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football will follow "The Matthew Harding Tapes" on 31 May 2023 as we tell the inside story of modern Chelsea. It's a story unlike any other in English football. And now we're going to tell it. Welcome to The Blueprint! We're launching our series with a two-part special as Garry Hayes and Ceri Levy sit down with former Chelsea FC owner Ken Bates to hear him tell his Stamford Bridge story like never before. Bates seldom gives interviews these days. Indeed, he doesn't do documentary, which makes The Ken Bates Tapes all the more compelling. In the next two episodes, listeners will hear how Bates ushered in a new dawn for Chelsea FC and English football. From battling the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal for equity in the Premier League, to appointing Glenn Hoddle as Chelsea manager; his boardroom battles with Matthew Harding and how he sold the club to Roman Abramovich over dinner at The Dorchester Hotel in London. Autism  Introduction (0:00 - 1:30) Hello and welcome to today's podcast episode where we'll be discussing creative autistic people. Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder that affects social communication, behavior, and sensory processing, but it can also come with strengths and talents that are often overlooked. In this episode, we'll be exploring the creative side of autism and showcasing some of the remarkable work that autistic individuals have produced. The link between creativity and autism (1:30 - 6:00) Many autistic people have a unique way of seeing the world, which can lend itself to creative pursuits. The link between creativity and autism has been studied for decades, and some researchers have found that autistic individuals have a higher likelihood of having exceptional creative abilities than the general population. This could be due to the fact that autistic individuals have a tendency to think outside the box, have strong attention to detail, and have a deep passion for their interests. Examples of creative autistic people (6:00 - 20:00) Let's take a look at some examples of creative autistic people and their work. First, we have Temple Grandin, who is a renowned animal behaviorist and autism advocate. Grandin's unique perspective as an autistic person has given her insight into the way animals think and behave, and she has used this knowledge to improve animal welfare in the farming industry. Another example is Dena Gassner, who is an autistic writer and advocate. Gassner uses her writing skills to promote autism acceptance and understanding, and she has published several books and articles on the subject. We also have Daniel Tammet, who is a British writer and savant. Tammet has written several books about his life as an autistic savant, including "Born on a Blue Day," which details his incredible ability to memorize pi to over 22,000 digits. Finally, we have Stephen Wiltshire, who is an autistic artist. Wiltshire has a photographic memory and has been able to create incredibly detailed drawings of cities from memory.  Stephen Wiltshire is a well-known British architectural artist who can draw a landscape from memory after viewing it once. According to his website, when Wiltshire was a child, he was nonverbal but learned to communicate by drawing animals and cars. After having his art supplies taken away, Wiltshire uttered his first word, “paper,” and was able to speak fluently by age 9. Before he had turned 18, Wiltshire received commissions from the British Prime Minister for his drawings, was featured in various shows, took part in drawing tours at several landmarks across the globe and published three books. Challenges facing creative autistic people (20:00 - 25:00) While there are many examples of successful creative autistic people, they face many challenges. Autistic individuals may struggle with social communication, which can make it difficult to promote their work and build a following. Additionally, many autistic individuals may face discrimination and stigma in the workplace, which can make it difficult to find jobs and pursue their passions. Conclusion (25:00 - 30:00) In conclusion, we've seen that there is a strong link between creativity and autism and that many autistic individuals have exceptional creative abilities. By highlighting the work of creative autistic people, we can promote autism acceptance and understanding, and showcase the strengths and talents of autistic individuals. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/creative-habits/message
