Their earliest years were, frankly, like those of many expansion teams. A team comprised of marginal talent as part of the 1972 Expansion Draft and the first-year record certainly reflected that. While the second season saw only slight improvement in the standings, it was the promise of a first overall pick who went on to win the Calder Trophy that laid the foundation of what was ahead. The third season saw a surprising playoff berth, a stunning opening round win over the veteran team from New York City and an historic comeback against Pittsburgh. Then, reality. While the team continued an upward trajectory, the playoff results got increasingly difficult over the course of the next four springs. Finally, in 1980, it came together. A strong core was bolstered in March by the arrival of a college defenseman fresh from winning Olympic gold and a veteran forward who became the final piece of the puzzle. From there, they made history - some of which may never be seen again in the NHL.Join the hosts as they go back 45 years with Captain Denis Potvin, left wing John Tonelli and defenseman Ken Morrow. This is Doormat to Dynasty.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] - Open voiced by long-time Islanders play-by-play man Jiggs McDonald with Islanders theme underneath from organist Paul Cartier. On this episode of the "House of Hockey" Podcast, Rae Rae is joined by hockey journalist Allan Kreda, diving deep into the latest NHL news, PWHL news and sharing candid opinions on the hottest topics in the hockey world. Breezy is on the podcast's IR. Allan Kreda is a long time writer who's covered the three major NHL teams in the greater New York area, New York Rangers, New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils. He's spent almost two decades with the Associated Press. He's covered money and banking, the National Hockey League and the sports media business. First up, let's talk about the thrill of back-to-back games in the Stadium Series. It's a bold move, but what are the thoughts swirling around the league? Does the excitement of consecutive games add to the spectacle, or does it dilute the impact? And what about the decision to allow other games to be played simultaneously? How does that affect the overall experience for fans and players alike? But it's not all smooth skating in the Stadium Series. Merchandise availability, particularly concerning the NJ Devils is notable and Allan shares his perspective on what the NHL does well with these outdoor hockey festivals. Shifting gears to the on-ice action…Allan shares the general response from players and fans about outdoor games like the Stadium Series. Turning our attention to the New York hockey scene, how's the Coach Patrick Roy era treating the New York Islanders? And we review the current states of the Rangers, Devils, and Flyers. What's the pulse of each team, and what can we expect from them moving forward? In a heartwarming twist, the Rangers and Islanders recently shared the Stadium Series stage with local heroes: firefighters and policemen. Donning jerseys representing their respective departments, these players honored the brave men and women who serve their communities. Meanwhile, the Flyers and Devils brought some pop culture flair, dressing as Rocky and Tony Soprano, respectively. It's moments like these that remind us why hockey is more than just a game—it's a platform for unity and celebration. Looking ahead, Allan shares some fascinating anecdotes about rubbing elbows with hockey legends like Adam Graves and Rodrigue Gabriel Gilbert. Plus, he's co-authoring a memoir with Ken Morrow, a true hockey icon with multiple Stanley Cups and a spot on the 1980 USA Olympic Miracle on Ice team. With stories like these, it's clear that the spirit of hockey lives on both on and off the ice. These are remarks delivered by Mike Church at the Saint Benedict Center Conference, October 13-14, 2023. The theme of the Conference was Cultivating and Passing on a Catholic Worldview". There is a term used in usury finances to describe a bank taking something back from you that they never owned in the first place and loaned you money to buy that wasn't there's either: it's called REPOSSESS. That's an odd choice of wording because RE possessing something implies POSSESSING it at some point in time and when a bank REPO'S your home, because you couldn't make the usury obligation, it takes possession for the first time so how can this be a RE-PO! The only exception to this rule is when the bank REPO'S a piece of real estate it had previously REPO'D from some other poor sucker. I dwell on this seemingly silly point because I use the term in this talk's title: Repossessing the Real Estate of the Catholic Mind. This sounded great in July when Brother threatened me at Rosary point to give him a title but as I started to develop the talk the Holy Ghost insisted I override Brother's veto and changed the title to the more catchy one of: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!? And WHAT is a miracle? “There is no impropriety in saying that God does something against nature when it is contrary to what we know of nature. For we give the name ‘nature' to the usual and known course of nature; and whatever God does contrary to this, we call ‘prodigies' or ‘miracles.'” - Saint Augustine Now I'm going to conduct an informal poll right now and sure that almost everyone in this room is going to vote the same… AFTER you show me your picture ID and voter registration card! LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE TALK HERE (Available on Monday, 16 October) The votes are in and miracles own in a landslide but did they REALLY win!? Outside of this room, I will wager you that Miracles would lose in a landslide especially if we gave the old school definition of what a miracle is AND what is required to “believe in them”; and this is where I want to start the meat and taters of this talk and hope to assist many Catholics to begin the work of repo-ing this lost real estate in our minds, the ACTUAL belief in miracles. Let's get started by getting an idea of what the modern world thinks a miracle is. Some of you will remember this clip from the year that was 1980. Now, I'm not saying that the defeat of the intrinsic evil that was the Soviet Union in a hockey game wasn't “miraculous”, in fact at least 2 members of the team, Mike Eruzione and Ken Morrow were Catholics, but they've never said that the win was a “Hail Mary”. The point I wish to make is that this game is still called “The Miracle On Ice”, in fact you can still buy a Miracle on Ice 1980 USA Hockey Team Lake Placid Celebration Photo! Much as I argued here back in 2019 that Catholics should smile and say an Ave everytime sports announcers say the home team needs a Hail Mary, I will argue here that having tens of millions of ‘Muricans calling something a “miracle” is good thing… at least the spell they word correctly! But I want to talk about REAL miracles where we know the hand and Graces of God actually interceded for or just inspired men and women of Christendom. There's a new book out that added lots of fuel to the fire that is this talk, it's called THEY FLEW - A HISTORY OF THE IMPOSSIBLE by Carlos Eire. This passage from the book is a is a perfect starting place. “The advent of the Protestant Reformation brought about a sudden redefinition of concepts such as religion, magic, superstition, and idolatry, as well as of assumptions about the relation between the natural and supernatural realms. Distinctions that had reigned largely uncontested in the Catholic Church of the West and the Orthodox Churches of the East since the first century suddenly began to be challenged in the early 1520s when an earth-shaking paradigm shift took place.
Cousin Brandon joins the Mikes for his sixth appearance. The cast of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cross paths with Spider-Man! In this bizarre Bronze Age brouhaha, Spider-Man gets mixed up with John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, Garret Morris, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, Lorne Michaels, and Ken Morrow, the Not-Ready-For-Primetime-Players. This classic story (which will likely never see print again), was written by Chris Claremont, pencilled by Bob Hall, and inked by Marie Severin.
“USA! USA!” The loud chant reverberates in our minds as American sports fans. Did you know that chant began at the “Miracle on Ice” during the 1980 Olympics? Our guest, Ken Morrow, was part of the USA team that won the game against the Russians, the heavily favored four-time defending Gold Medal winners who defeated the American team 10-3 in an exhibition game days before the Olympics began. But on that perfect night in Lake Placid, N.Y., the Americans won 4-3 in front of a small, but frenzied crowd on their way to the Gold Medal. That memory will never fade, for Morrow, for me or for anybody old enough to remember it happening.
This year's Winter Olympics may be over, but the lasting impact of something that happened in the Games 42 years ago this week is still fresh in the mind of this week's guest. In fact, it's still vivid for many of us.Ken Morrow has heard the stories. Countless people could tell him today what they were doing 42 years ago this week. In fact, he gets letters and cards nearly every day. That's likely how it is for most anyone born in the United States before the mid-1970s or so.To the players this was a seemingly simple hockey game between a bunch of kids, true amateurs, from the United States, beating an invincible team from the Soviet Union, a team that had won all but one Olympic hockey gold medal since 1960. In local terms, and no knock to my KU friends, but this would be like the Jayhawks beating the Kansas City Chiefs. To the rest of Americans, it meant so much more. See, this hockey game between the United States and the Soviet Union just happened to come during the Cold War, along with Russia invading Afghanistan and rising gas prices. The oldest player on that 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team was 23 years old. And since the 1990s, he has called Kansas City home. He is Ken Morrow. Morrow became the Director of Pro Scouting for the NHL's New York Islanders in 1992.The Islanders drafted Morrow in the fourth round (68th overall) of the 1976 NHL Draft, and he played defense for the team from 1979-1989, collecting 105 points (17 goals, 88 assists) in 550 career NHL games. He was an important member of the Islander teams that won four consecutive Stanley Cups. The first of those came just a few months after Morrow helped the United States win gold as part of the “Miracle on Ice” team, making him the first player in NHL history to capture an Olympic Gold Medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year.Morrow visited our C-10 Mentoring & Leadership group on Wednesday, Feb. 23. That's when we recorded this episode. This episode, however, is a little different from most of our others that we do with our group. Daren is joined by Hockey Hall of Famer Brad Park and 4-time Stanley Cup winner Ken Morrow. They take a trip down memory lane to discuss the 1983 Conference Final matchup between the Boston Bruins and the New York Islanders (the last time the teams met in the playoffs). The Bruins came into the playoffs as the top seed and the New York Islanders were a dynasty trying to win their 4th straight Stanley Cup. Park and Morrow talk about Nassau Coliseum and the Boston Garden, share memories of just how dominant Mike Bossy was in the series, the intense and physical style that Billy Smith brought to the rink, the coaching edge the Islanders had with Al Arbour behind the bench and the difference in experience between the two rosters. Park talks about just how tough it was to play against Bryan Trottier and Morrow explains the unique chemistry that Trottier and Bossy had both on the ice and off. It's an awesome conversation between two hockey legends with lots of stories, laughs and mutual admiration.
