Gala Avary & Rich Johnson join me for a an in-depth investigation of the first film adaptation of a Hannibal Lector fable (Lecktor in this film), Michael Mann's masterful color-coding, Alex Cox's dismissive and rather confused summary of the film, Miami Vice, William Petersen, Dennis Farina, Tom Noonan's terrifying Francis Dolarhyde, the birth of forensics in crime stories and so much more. ¡Gracias y feed the cvlt!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Avary (Kyoruyeye) review episodes ten through twelve of Fruits Basket (2019). In episode 10, Chika and Giana discuss Kyo's hate towards Yuki. Giana describes her attempt at making Valentine's Day chocolates. Chika makes an excellent point about Shigure's job stability. Avary sheds some light on Kyo's treatment by the Sohma's. In episode 11, the story of the “idiot traveler” sparks a deep discussion between the women about kindness and its place in both Fruits Basket and the real world. A certain scene foreshadows a much later event that has all three ladies' hearts going doki-doki. Giana somewhat loses her composure over Eric Vale's performance in a particular scene. In episode 12, Hatsuharu's “proof” gives everyone a laugh. Yuki's emotional past and inner dialogue resonates with Giana. Chika lays down a solid theory about Shigure's manipulation tactics. One of our favorite nights on the C-10 Mentoring & Leadership program calendar happened recently. It's when we invite the next year's cohort of students to come to a session and see what C-10's about. As part of that, we interview the current seniors to see what they've taken from their two to four years in the program. So, this week you're meet and hear from five of this year's seven seniors: Alissa from Sumner Academy, Avary from Piper, Dawson from Liberty North, Lisa from Wyandotte, and Trey from Truman. (Our other two seniors, Isaiah and Korey, weren't with us due to high school baseball games.)As an extra bonus, these five seniors were interviewed in front of the group by longtime Kansas City sports TV anchor — and C-10 mentor — Al Wallace. One final note: if you're a supporter of C You In The Major Leagues and, specifically, the C-10 program, as a financial donor, a mentor, an in-kind donor…whatever it might be…THANK YOU! These days there's no on right way to have a relationship, so why would having a family be any different? We're chatting with David, Zeke, and Avary about the rise of the 3-parent family and their arrangement as co-parents with Avary & Zeke being a married couple and David being their asexual platonic friend. We discuss why they opted to do things differently as a non-nuclear family (and how far they went to make it all legally binding), the importance of chosen family especially when traditional arrangements aren't on the table or don't feel right to you, and how to be intentional about your relationships at all stages. This year's Winter Olympics may be over, but the lasting impact of something that happened in the Games 42 years ago this week is still fresh in the mind of this week's guest. In fact, it's still vivid for many of us.Ken Morrow has heard the stories. Countless people could tell him today what they were doing 42 years ago this week. In fact, he gets letters and cards nearly every day. That's likely how it is for most anyone born in the United States before the mid-1970s or so.To the players this was a seemingly simple hockey game between a bunch of kids, true amateurs, from the United States, beating an invincible team from the Soviet Union, a team that had won all but one Olympic hockey gold medal since 1960. In local terms, and no knock to my KU friends, but this would be like the Jayhawks beating the Kansas City Chiefs. To the rest of Americans, it meant so much more. See, this hockey game between the United States and the Soviet Union just happened to come during the Cold War, along with Russia invading Afghanistan and rising gas prices. The oldest player on that 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team was 23 years old. And since the 1990s, he has called Kansas City home. He is Ken Morrow. Morrow became the Director of Pro Scouting for the NHL's New York Islanders in 1992.The Islanders drafted Morrow in the fourth round (68th overall) of the 1976 NHL Draft, and he played defense for the team from 1979-1989, collecting 105 points (17 goals, 88 assists) in 550 career NHL games. He was an important member of the Islander teams that won four consecutive Stanley Cups. The first of those came just a few months after Morrow helped the United States win gold as part of the “Miracle on Ice” team, making him the first player in NHL history to capture an Olympic Gold Medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year.Morrow visited our C-10 Mentoring & Leadership group on Wednesday, Feb. 23. That's when we recorded this episode. This episode, however, is a little different from most of our others that we do with our group. Whereas you typically hear Matt Fulks' interview with the guest and then we delete the questions from our students, this time we're flipping that.To honor our students and the donors who make this program possible, we're using the Q&A part of the program as this episode. That said, a few notes:If you'd like to read two Q&As with Ken that we've posted previously on our C You In The Major Leagues blog, links are below.Joining Ken at our session was his son Evan, whom you'll hear from a couple of times. Finally, here are the students and mentors asking questions: students Topher, Dawson, Avary, John, Alejandra, and Jameson, plus mentors Lenny and Stann. #SilentHillfilm #SilentHillRevelation #Podcast Silent Hill is a 2006 psychological horror film directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avary, Gans, and Nicolas Boukhrief. The film is an adaptation of Konami's 1999 video game Silent Hill. It stars Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger, Kim Coates, Tanya Allen, Alice Krige, and Jodelle Ferland. The film follows Rose, who takes her adopted daughter, Sharon, to the town of Silent Hill, for which Sharon cries while sleepwalking. Arriving at Silent Hill, Rose is involved in a car accident and awakens to find Sharon missing. While searching for her daughter, she fights a local cult and begins to uncover Sharon's connection to the town's dark past. Development of Silent Hill began in the early 2000s. After attempting to gain the film rights to Silent Hill for five years, Gans sent a video interview to Konami explaining his plans for adapting Silent Hill and how important the games are to him. Konami awarded him the film rights as a result. Gans and Avary began working on the script in 2004. Avary used Centralia, Pennsylvania as an inspiration for the town. Principal photography began in April 2005 and lasted three months with an estimated $50 million budget, and was shot on sound sets and on location in Ontario, Canada. The concept of the film is based on the idea of a city that exists in four different variations, presented in metaphysical, mystical and temporal aspects. Most of the monsters encountered in the film were played by professional dancers, only a few of them were created on the basis of computer graphics. Silent Hill was released in Canada on April 21, 2006, by Alliance Atlantis and in France on April 26, 2006, by Metropolitan Filmexport. The film theatrically grossed over $100 million worldwide, and over $22 million from DVD sales. It received generally negative reviews from critics, and Rotten Tomatoes summarized the response as "visually impressive, but as with many video game adaptations, it's plagued by inane dialogue, a muddled plot, and an overlong runtime". It earned four Fangoria Chainsaw Award nominations. A sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation, was released on October 26, 2012. Silent Hill: Revelation (also known as Silent Hill: Revelation 3D) is a 2012 psychological horror film written and directed by M. J. Bassett. A sequel to the 2006 film Silent Hill, it stars Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Martin Donovan, Malcolm McDowell and Carrie-Anne Moss, along with Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell returning from the previous film. It is based on the survival horror video game Silent Hill 3 by Konami.[6] Revelation's plot follows adult Heather Mason (Clemens) who, discovering on the eve of her eighteenth birthday that her presumed identity is false, is drawn to an alternate dimension existing in the fictitious American town of Silent Hill. Talks for a Silent Hill sequel began in December 2006, with Christophe Gans returning to direct and Roger Avary writing a script for the project. However, after Gans dropped out from directing and Avary was imprisoned for vehicular manslaughter, the project entered in a complicated production. Later, in early 2010, Bassett was hired to direct and write the film, replacing Gans and Avary. She had expressed her openness to fans' suggestions of actresses for Heather's role. On a total estimated $20 million budget, filming lasted from March to May 2011 in Canada, with the 3D RED Epic camera used for the process; audio mixing took place in France. Silent Hill: Revelation was released in Canada on 26 October 2012 by Alliance Films and in France on 28 November 2012 by Metropolitan Filmexport. The film grossed over $56 million worldwide and was received negative reviews from critics.[5][7] --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support

ALL TEN EPISODES OF THE PEDESTAL PODCAST SEASON 2 ARE NOW AVAILABLE In our first ever Personal Pedestal episode, we’re emotional vampires with the 2002 Roger Avary black comedy THE RULES OF ATTRACTION. Shane explains why this movie is on his own personal pedestal, and why it made him think Roger Avary was a superior director to Quentin Tarantino (8:36). We then begin the case for putting it on the pedestal with the kinds of risks Avary took that we had never seen before (13:42). We gush over the famous “movie within a movie” euro trip scene (15:53), debate whether or not the dark satire does more damage than good (31:20), and if Paul was the breakout character (42:09). We move on to the case for keeping it off the pedestal with Van Der Beek feeling very miscast (51:13), how everything has a “student film” quality (54:17), and why in retrospect Shane found so much of this movie very annoying (58:42).

It's funny, it's violent, it's jammed with F's, it's brilliant and it's...full of forgiveness? Quentin Tarantino's opus to L.A. hitmen & scumbags is as influential as a modern movie can get. John Travolta got his career back while Uma Thurman & Sam Jackson hit stardom because of this. So rewatchable! Get your Sparkplug Coffee (lots of cream, lots of sugar), then dig into the Pulp.
