Former Islanders Captain Denis Potvin Joins Peter Schwartz for the debut episode of "The Double Chili Islanders Podcast". The hall of fame defenseman scored the Islanders' 10th goal on November 13th, 1979 against the Rangers ensuring that all fans at the game would receive a double order of chili from a local restaurant. Denis talks about that night, his career with the Islanders and the current team. You can follow Peter on X/Twitter @SchwartzSports and on Instagram @peterschwartzsports.
So far in this series, we've seen Denis Potvin win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's best rookie after helping transform a hapless team into something resembling a professional one. We've seen him rocket up the charts of the league's best defensemen, capturing his first Norris Trophy at just 22-years-old. We've seen him win a second Norris after pissing off the entire hockey world, learning to open up emotionally, and climbing back to the mountaintop after a inconsistent follow-up season. Today we finally reach his final Norris Trophy year, in which the Islanders win their first regular season championship and Potvin has, to this day, the best single season a defensemen has ever had for this franchise. Potvin's 101 points on 31 goals and 70 assists in 1978-89 was by all accounts a spectacular campaign, highlighted by hat tricks, long point streaks, torrid periods of dominance and one hit that would result in an unfortunate injury and even more unfortunate chant that has gone on for far too long. With Potvin leading the way on defense, Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies pushing the offense and Smith/Resch duo on top of their games, the Islanders seemed primed to win their first Stanley Cup. But their closest rivals made sure they had one last hard lesson to learn. This is, thankfully, the final time we'll see the 1979 playoffs in this series. As painful as that loss was to the players and the fans, that whole season stands as one of the most fascinating in franchise history. It is still the second best season in team history by wins and points and is the only one in which the team won four major awards. That roster had everything going for it. Until it didn't... at the worst possible time to the worst possible opponent. Denis Potvin's Islanders story doesn't end here but his offensive and statistical dominance does. He would captain four straight Stanley Cup winners and make the Hall of Fame by letting others in on the action and becoming a key player, rather than the focal point. He's still one of the three best players in Islanders history and I hope this episode makes that case as clearly as it can. Research and other assistance was provided by Kevin Schultz. By winning the Calder Trophy in 1974 and the Norris in 1976, Denis Potvin had already established himself as one of the best defensemen in the NHL. That was the good news. The bad news was that his mouth and idiosyncratic disposition separated him from many of his peers and even his own teammates. An inflammatory series of diaries written during the 1976 Canada Cup tournament made many in and out of the game think of him as a petulant grouch or an outright villain. But by beginning his journey as a businessman, taking a more team-oriented approach to hockey and opening himself up emotionally to his teammates, Potvin - still just 24-years-old - was able to unburden himself from pressure and expectations. In a season in which the Islanders started out sloppy and ended up with their first division championship, Potvin was a rock of consistency. After watching his brother Jean get traded away from Long Island, Denis went on a second half scoring rampage, blowing past his defensive competition to reclaim the Norris Trophy crown and prove once and for all that he was the premier blueliner of the era. But in the playoffs, the once scrappy underdogs learned a hard lesson about being the favorite and having a target on your back. Denis Potvin remains one of the more fascinating figures in Islanders history. He was so good on the ice that any perceived cold streak or bad play seemed like the end of the world. He wasn't into the usual hockey guy things (aka just “hockey”) and had a million interests away from the ice. Had social media existed in the mid-to-late 70's, I'm not sure he would have particularly cared for it. There's an argument that even with a Calder and three Norris Trophies (the last of which we'll examine in our next episode) that he might have still been underrated then and now. So let's go back and see what made Denis Potvin so special. Research and other assistance was provided by Kevin Schultz. On this week's show, we are joined by a player who knows a thing or two about winning the Stanley Cup - he did it 4 times in his career!! Bob Nystrom is in the house!! Bob played for 14 seasons as part of the New York Islander dynasty that featured players like Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy, and Brian Trottier to name just a few. Nystrom brought grit & determination to every game, not to mention his habit of scoring clutch game-winning overtime goals through the 1980's. One of the most determined, hard working power forwards to play in the NHL - we are thrilled to have him on the show sharing some great stories about winning all those Stanley Cups! Enjoy! We finish with Denis Potvin here on "Inside the Game", brought to you by flexxCOACH. Denis discusses the success on the Islanders team in the Stanley Cup years. There is one word Denis said is important in life and sports. "Courage" you have to have it to be successful. Never back down and always have "Courage" will take you to where you want to go in life. Great advice from a hockey legend.
Four time Stanley Cup Champion Denis Potvin joins the podcast to breakdown what is going right for the Panthers as they win the first two games of the Easter Conference Finals against the Hurricanes. Tkachuk plays overtime hero in both games and hosts Kevin Rodengen and Jake Houston dive into the highlights of the series so far from Barkov stepping up to Bobrovsky playing on a level no one could have ever imagined.
We continue with Denis Potvin, and he talks about the management of the New York Islanders and how Bill Torrey and Al Arbour built the team for the Stanley Cup runs when they won four in a row.
We continue with Denis Potvin and this is a great listen to leadership and the Islanders during their Four Stanley Cups. Denis gives great insights to the leadership on the team and why they had such great success.
Four-Time Stanly Cup Champion and Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Denis Potvin joins the show to Reminisce about his late Brother Jean Potvin prior to his ceremony and celebration of life tomorrow.
We catch up with four time Stanley Cup Champion, Hockey Hall of Famer, and Captain of the New York Islanders. Denis takes us back to his beginnings is Canada a young man and the fun he had growing up with his brother Jean and playing hockey and other sports. As 12 years of age he was asked to play on a travel all star team in Ottawa made up the best 12 year old's in the area. It was the start of his hockey journey. At 14 years of age he made the transition to the Ottawa 67's. Was a jump at 14 years old but he was bigger than most kids. He received great coaching with the 67's, which really was important in his development as a young man and hockey player. One thing he was not when he played in juniors was a "dreamer", he never dreamed of playing in the NHL. He was more about being a good hockey player and winning. Winning was very important to him. Success is what he wanted in his game. His coach Bill Long was old school and great mentor. In his last year of junior which was his 5th year. Leo Bovine entered his life. He was great influence on teaching Denis, patience on the ice and how to execute a "hip check". One thing Leo taught him "there is no out of bounds in hockey due the boards, Denis said he will find you at some point"Denis finishes the first segment with being drafted by the New York Islanders and learning the responsibilities of what it takes to play in the NHL. Ed Westfall was huge help to him and the other young players on the Islanders. He also talks about Al Arbour and how he got the team to play defense and how the beginnings of the Islanders success. Enjoy listening to Denis here on flexxCOACH's "Inside the Game".
Mike and Dan look back at a week that put the Islanders in good position, and ahead towards the California trip that could ruin everything. They revel over a rare "signature win" that helped derail everyone's favorite wild card hopeful. The victory over the Sabres was the Islanders in their purest form, getting cheers for red line dump-ins from a fanbase that finds them anything but boring, despite how they're treated by the talking heads we're forced to deal with. They also look at another hilarious win over the Penguins that exposed how flawed that team is, despite its delusions about itself and its history. In the second half, they preview a swing on the West Coast that could be doom, the scheduling conspiracy theory working against the Islanders, and the hard shifts we'll have to put in just to watch them this week. Forget the coffee and take some deep breaths. Finally, they discuss the Flyers and the orange-robed council of elders that actually runs them. Joined by Hockey Night in New York host Sean Cuthbert, Mike and Dan talk about the goalie tandem of the future that wasn't, and the mad weekend that changed the Islanders forever. Roberto Luongo needs no preamble at this point. He was one of the most outstanding goalies of his era and a rock for two franchises - neither of which was the one that drafted him. Kevin Weekes was no slouch either, playing solid backup minutes for a number of teams. But neither could overcome the itchy trigger finger of the general manager who acquired and then traded them away in order to take the real goalie of his dreams first overall. Sean's a pro at this whole podcasting thing and they waste no time in diving into the insanity of June 24, 2000. They run down the “terrible dominoes of decisions,” the “Sliding Doors” moments and the brain-breaking what-could-have-beens that categorized an entire era of Islanders hockey. The pace is as fast and furious as the trades were. Note: Weird Islanders: The Podcast! will return to its normal biweekly schedule next week. Locked On Capitals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Capitals
In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps loss to the Kings 4-2. This ends the Caps 2 game winning streak. The loss also makes the margin for error for the Caps making the playoffs that much smaller. The Caps picked up a big wins against the Ducks and Sharks but when facing the surging LA King's they fell short even though they scored first. They were not able to maintain the lead and the Caps lost even though Darcy Kuemper stopped all 19 shots he faced in the first. Later Dan talks about the conversations between Brian Maclellan and Alex Ovechkin about the future of the Capitals and struggles the Capitals faced this year that led to that decision. Dan later talks about Alex Ovechkins great game where he scored his 816th goal. Ovechkin's power-play strike moved him to 816 career goals, and he is now just 79 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. The goal was also his 36th of the season and his fifth in as many games. Then talks about the importance of Nick Backstrom and how he has been instrumental in his career Nicklas Backstrom recorded the secondary assist on Ovechkin's power play goal, his eighth assist of the season. It marks Backstrom's 333rd career power-play assist, passing Denis Potvin (332) and tying Teemu Selanne (333) for the 28th-most power-play assists in NHL history.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Mike and Dan look back at the NHL trade deadline and a satisfying week for the Islanders, who took home a big win over Detroit and a new large winger. First, they recap Saturday's matinee victory, which went from potentially demoralizing to jubilant in the span of a period. They talk about how "that smell" has re-emerged on the Islanders, who are looking more like the conference finals team from two seasons ago and playing meaningful games in March as they had hoped. The second half is devoted to the fallout of this year's trade deadline, from surprise winners to delicious losers and how the Islanders ended up being among the former. Many of last week's deals made the Bo Horvat trade - which was lambasted at the time - seem much more reasonable. And it's clear that some teams, including division rivals, are still searching for answers even after moving bodies around. Thanks again to everyone who made our Patreon launch so successful. Joined by Ryan, aka RattMartin of the Skates at the Stakes podcast, Mike and Dan remember Derick Brassard, a recent Weird Islander who went from hated to beloved to forgotten in the span of just a few seasons. After starring on a few very good Rangers team, Brassard entered the wilderness, where he played for what seemed like a different team every six months. He landed with the Islanders as a replacement depth center and after months of searching for a role, settled into a slot on the wing where he played a key role in the team's run to the semifinals in the bubble tournament. He has gone onto play for a few other teams since leaving Long Island, and has now surpassed the 1,000 games mark in his return engagement with the Ottawa Senators. Ryan talks about his memories of Brassard's short time with the Islanders, his mythical status within his friend group and how that bubble team all had their signature moments that will live on forever. Mike and Dan look back at a the Islanders' three big wins last week and look ahead at the NHL trade deadline while it's actively happening. With victories over the Penguins and Jets, the Islanders re-established themselves as a playoff contender and actually managed to look like their old selves for one of the few times all season. That they melted a few Pittsburgh beat writer brains made it even more fun. But their makeshift lineup won't cut it for too long, and despite already having Bo Horvat, they'll need some pickups. The second half is dedicated to this week's trade deadline. Names like Timo Meier and Patrick Kane are either already or almost gone but there are some players out there that might help the Islanders get a little stronger for a possible playoff run. The best thing about this interminable trade deadline is that it's almost over. Preorder your triple player “Line Change” Bobblehead today from the fine folks at FOCO. Mike and Dan react to a week of huge wins, embarrassing losses and injuries that somehow have the Islanders in a playoff berth again. Thanks to a thrilling comeback win over Pittsburgh and some timely losses to other teams, the Islanders are in the second wild card despite also predicably losing to an ECHL goalie and getting humiliated by the best team in the league. They are one of a pack of flawed teams all desperate to make the playoffs and hoping the Price Is Right wheel lands on $1.00 them. But the Islanders have bigger issues than points and games played - namely key injuries to J-G Pageau, Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal that could push some lesser depth players into starting roles. In the second half, they look at another major matchup with Pittsburgh, a trade we've all be told is a "home run" swing and why it's pointless to argue in favor of the Islanders online. EPISODE 63: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:46) I cannot be certain which scumbag I hate more today: Joe Scarborough or Samuel Alito. It's amazing that a shameless venomous opportunist, whose behavior for 30 years implies a damaged psyche, has the nerve to attack and not celebrate the recovery from stroke of an honest politician (5:30) Scarborough is the political whore who tried to mainstream Trump on MSNBC yet never once asked him "Why do you say things that make no sense?" or "Have you had an aneurysm or concussion?" or "Have you used drugs that can interfere with or damage your cognitive ability?" (7:27) His attack on Fetterman is worse than it seems because for every American recovering from injury or illness, it is a slap in their face from a creature not worthy of any position of influence in this business or this society (10:30) And "Justice" Samuel Alito, who has now failed mathematics, history, and ethics, may still be worse after his self-martyring speech to a fascist group (15:20) Perhaps Alito can resign and be replaced by an attorney who once defended the murderer of an abortion doctor. The attorney was named Joe Scarborough. B-Block (18:15) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Kodah, in New York (19:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Surprisingly good news for Dems in early voting numbers and the generic Congressional Ballot; the implication Kash Patel is willing to testify against Trump; Kanye crashes Skechers and gets shown out by security; Musk tries to float a joke only to see it sink; Another Herschel Walker abortion story (23:00) IN SPORTS: Boone stays, the new NYC Marathon chief may have togo, and they're not booing, they're chanting "Potvin Socks" (26:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: NewsNation TV and Louis DeJoy compete with National Review Online publishing the rants of a Pennsylvania Republican who wants genocide against Democrats for the honors. C-Block (30:33) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Back 43 years ago today, they actually banned Willie Mays for promoting gambling (rather than give him a big paycheck). At age 20 I had to interview him, and the bizarre way he answered his phone still resonates me - as does the bizarre way he was drafted by the army right after his big league debut and how that might have cost him the all-time Home Run Record.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When you think of the greatest defensemen to ever play in the NHL, a few names come immediately to mind: Bobby Orr, Doug Harvey, Ray Borque and Denis Potvin. But one of the most overlooked names is Pierre Pilote and he deserves to be mentioned in any conversation when it comes to who was the greatest blueliner to ever play. Some of the reasons Pilote might be overlook, and even forgotten, are: his name only appears once on the Stanley Cup, he didn’t start playing in the NHL until he was 24, and he never scored at the pace of an Orr, Borque or Potvin. When Pilote played the game, defensemen were not known as big-time scorers. Yet, Pilote led the Blackhawks in scoring during their incredible run to the 1961 Stanley Cup Championship. Pierre was as tough as nails. He never won a Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship, but he won the Norris Trophy three times. The NHL started to track plus/minus during the 1959-60 season, and in the 10 years that followed, twice Pilote led the league. In 1963-64 he was a plus 31 and in 1966-67 he was a plus 54. Only twice did he end a season minus. The Blackhawks were not a very good team when Pierre joined them having qualified for the playoffs just twice for the post season in the 10-years prior to his arrival. In his final 10-season with Chicago, the Blackhawks made the post season every year, three times making it to the Stanley Cup Finals and they won it 1961. Despite starting the game at such an advanced age, his mid-teens, Pierre Pilote made up for lost time quickly and ultimately wound up in the Hall of Fame. Waxy Gregoire, a terrific writer who co-authored the book, “Heart of the Blackhawks,” with Pilote is on SFH for an in-depth discussion about the man who helped turn the Blackhawks fortunes around. As a junior in 1972-73, Blake led the Ontario Hockey Association in scoring with 159 points in 62 games. He was the first pick of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1973 NHL draft. Blir Gustav Nyquist trejdad innan bytesstoppet i mars? Episode 24 of the Pro Hockey Alumni Podcast features one of hockey's all-time best LW's — Brian Propp, who played 15 NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, Boston Bruins and the Hartford Whalers. After a unbelievable junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WCHL, Brian was drafted by the Flyers in the first round, 14th overall in the 1979 NHL Entry draft. He'd go on to score 1,004 points over 1,016 NHL games and ranks second in Flyers history in goals (369, behind Bill Barber) and is second in assists (480, second behind Bobby Clarke) Brian Played in five NHL All Star games, five Stanley Cup Finals and played on the Star-Studded Team Canada squad in the 1987 Canada Cup. Brian was a sensational post-season player and holds the NHL's all time record for points by a left wing with 148. In 1999, Propp was named to the MasterCard Canadian Junior All-Time team, which also included Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin, and Bernie Parent — not bad company. Also in 1999, Propp was inducted into the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame. In 2014, Propp was inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. Brian has gone on to great success in the business world and remains an active with the Flyers Alumni. His recovery from a stroke he suffered in 2015 is truly inspirational. The Vancouver Canucks' goaltender of the future finally makes his NHL debut... and it was pretty okay. Ryan, Geeta and P Mac chat over the Easter long weekend to discuss the big debut of Thatcher Demko on Saturday afternoon. After several years of development in college and the AHL, the Canucks' goaltending prospect made his debut against a Columbus Blue Jackets team hungry for points and home ice advantage. They also discuss Scott Foster's emergency call up with the Chicago Blackhawks. His fourteen perfect minutes of play were one of the few bright spots for the struggling Blackhawks this season. Denis Potvin had some pretty salty words for the Edmonton Oilers. Major praise for McDavid, but heavy criticism for the rest of the team and management. The gang asks what needs to be done over the summer to try and get them back to the playoffs, just one year removed from a second round appearance. They also discuss the red-hot Boston Bruins. They overtook Tampa atop the Atlantic Division, have some incredible depth and look to be built for the playoffs. How far will they go? And how about that new one year deal for Big Z? A little Rebel Rebel off the top of the program in honour of The Thin White Duke, David Bowie. Geeta, P Mac, Dave and Ryan are here this week 24 hours after one hell of a Vancouver Canucks game. A 3rd period comeback with a huge goal from Jake Virtanen, a Daniel Sedin OT winner, a controversy about comments made by Florida Panthers, a bench clearing brawl and one hell of a team building exercise... oh, and not to mention some weird comments by Denis Potvin on everything going on. The gang also talks about an usual Tinder date of Geeta's, talk about what they would do if they won the Powerball and where they would relocate their recently purchased franchises. Finally, they touch on the Emerson Etem trade, if Radim Vrbata will get moved and the unfortunate task of waiving Chris Higgins. They look at the Ryan Johansen/Seth Jones trade and the embarrassing video of the Edmonton Oilers prospects getting shut down by a group of girls on TMZ! Enjoy!
Chuck Kaiton interviews Denis Potvin
God lyssning!
