Five states have confirmed detections of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in dairy cattle. Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, Idaho, and Michigan -- the closest state to Wisconsin. Some states, such as Nebraska, are enacting stricter import rules to control the spread. Wisconsin State Veterinarian Dr. Darlene Konkle says as of right now, Wisconsin officials don't plan on making any changes. She says the food supply chain remains safe. The pasteurization of milk and cooking meat kills HPAI. One worker on an infected Texas farm did contract the virus, but Konkle says the risk to humans remains low. Farm employees can protect themselves from this virus and others with basic biosecurity measures. HPAI detected on farms across the five states was found to have been spread via wild birds. It's not just dairy cows that can contract the virus. Pets and wild animals have also gotten HPAI. Konkle underscores that this fact is why all livestock operations should bring biosecurity to the forefront. No deaths have been noted in infected dairy cows. Treatment is akin to the human flu -- rest and relaxation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.06.506403v1?rss=1 Authors: Doshi, F. R., Konkle, T. Abstract: The object-responsive cortex of the visual system has a highly systematic topography, with a macro-scale organization related to animacy and the real-world size of objects, and embedded meso-scale regions with strong selectivity for a handful of object categories. Here, we use self-organizing principles to learn a topographic representation of the data manifold of a deep neural network representational space. We find that a smooth mapping of this representational space showed many brain-like motifs, with (i) large-scale organization of animate vs. inanimate and big vs. small response preferences, supported by (ii) feature tuning related to textural and coarse form information, with (iii) naturally emerging face- and scene-selective regions embedded in this larger-scale organization. While some theories of the object-selective cortex posit that these differently tuned regions of the brain reflect a collection of distinctly specified functional modules, the present work provides computational support for an alternate hypothesis that the tuning and topography of the object-selective cortex reflects a smooth mapping of a unified representational space. The CW dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a surprising choice for critical analysis. But, loyal viewers quickly came to appreciate the show's sharp cultural critique through masterful parody, and this strategy has made it a critical darling and earned it several awards throughout its run. In ways not often seen on traditional network television, the show transcends conventional genre boundaries—the Hollywood musical, the romantic comedy, the music video—while resisting stereotypes associated with contemporary life. The essays in this collection underscore the show's ability to distinguish itself within the current television market. Focusing on themes of feminism, gender identity, and mental health, contributors explore the ways in which the show challenged viewer expectations, as well as the role television critics play in identifying a show's “authenticity” or quality. The contribution of object size, manipulability, and stability on neural responses to inanimate objects

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.11.22.393397v1?rss=1 Authors: Magri, C., Konkle, T., Caramazza, A. Abstract: In human occipitotemporal cortex, brain responses to depicted inanimate objects have a large-scale organization by real-world object size. Critically, the size of objects in the world is systematically related to behaviorally-relevant properties: small objects are often grasped and manipulated (e.g., forks), while large objects tend to be less motor-relevant (e.g., tables), though this relationship does not always have to be true (e.g., picture frames and wheelbarrows). To determine how these two dimensions interact, we measured brain activity with functional magnetic resonance imaging while participants viewed a stimulus set of small and large objects with either low or high motor-relevance. The results revealed that the size organization was evident for objects with both low and high motor-relevance; further, a motor-relevance map was also evident across both large and small objects. Targeted contrasts revealed that typical combinations (small motor-relevant vs. large non-motor-relevant) yielded more robust topographies than the atypical covariance contrast (small non-motor-relevant vs. large motor-relevant). In subsequent exploratory analyses, a factor analysis revealed that the construct of motor-relevance was better explained by two underlying factors: one more related to manipulability, and the other to whether an object moves or is stable. The factor related to manipulability better explained responses in lateral small-object preferring regions, while the factor related to object stability (lack of movement) better explained responses in ventromedial large-object preferring regions. Taken together, these results reveal that the structure of neural responses to objects of different sizes further reflect behavior-relevant properties of manipulability and stability, and contribute to a deeper understanding of some of the factors that help the large-scale organization of object representation in high-level visual cortex. There were a number of reasons why I should have had this week’s guest, Jeff Konkle, on the podcast long-long ago. For one reason or another, it just didn't happen, but I’m glad to have here at the 99th episode of the show. Jeff is open and honest about how his hobbyist mentality towards stand-up comedy has allowed him to find fulfillment both professionally and creatively.  Now a dozen years into the craft much has changed for Jeff since starting at 22. Konkle has become a weekly staple on Pittsburgh radio as WDVE’s Mr. Wednesday, he’s headlining around Western Pennsylvania (along with working as a feature for tons of household names), and he gets to come home to his wife and two young boys.
