Ky Furneaux spent 16 years in Hollywood as a professional stunt performer, falling, fighting and breaking glass on cue. She has managed to make her next life even more extreme — surviving in the wild, sometimes with just a knife, often naked (R)
Ky Furneaux spent much of her early childhood running wild in small rural towns around South Australia, having adventures and riding her horse through the bush with a freedom that only small country towns allowed. When she was 19 years old, a car accident fractured a vertebra in her spine. When she was told she would never be physically active again, a resilience emerged that she didn't know she had. She has been using it ever since in her career as a stunt double in films and as a survivalist in the wild. In this interview, Ky talks about the accident that changed her life and how she developed the resilience that assisted in her recovery. She also discusses some of the amazing survival challenges she has conquered as a participant on Discovery Channel's “Naked and Afraid” series. During a 21-day, solo trip in the Amazon, Ky consumed just 1,000 total calories while burning more than 40,000. She shares her methods for overcoming these grueling physical and mental obstacles while convincing herself to keep moving forward. Ky closes the conversation with simple, practical, powerful advice for people who want to further develop their own resilience. Ky Furneaux is an Australian outdoor guide, TV host, survival expert, professional speaker, and stunt double who has appeared in over 100 films and TV productions. She is co-author of Survive: The All-In-One Guide to Staying Alive in Extreme Conditions with Emily Sullivan. She has also written When the Grid Fails: Easy Action Steps When Facing Urban and Natural Disasters, The Superwoman's Survival Guide: Conquering the Unexpected in the Office, on the Town, or in the Great Outdoors, and Surviving the First 36 Hours: What to Do to Ensure Rescue which is scheduled to be published in August of 2023. Ky also works with young people to help them develop their confidence and resilience.

Ky Furneaux grew up adventuring in the outback until a car accident left her with a fractured spine and doctors telling her she would never be active again. This was a life sentence that Ky wasn't prepared to accept, and her determination and love of nature inspired her to use rock climbing as a tool for recovery. She's since won the World Taurus Stunt Award for the best female stunt performer and successfully navigated a 100-mile hike over the Sierra Nevada with only a pocket knife, amongst many other incredible achievements as an extreme survivalist. Hosts Action Alexa and Jenna Louise chat to Ky to find out how she survived 21 days in the Amazon alone bleeding into piranha-infested waters, how she trained to become an A-list Hollywood stunt performer and what skills we can adopt in our own lives in order to stay calm in the worst situations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ky Furneaux spent 16 years in Hollywood as a professional stunt performer, falling, fighting and breaking glass on cue. She has managed to make her next life even more extreme — surviving in the wild, sometimes with just a knife, often naked
Aged nineteen, Ky Furneaux was told she would never lead an active life. A car crash had left her with a fractured spine and doctors speculated that her mobility would be limited for the rest of her life. Ky was determined to prove them wrong. And she did. In spades. After a year of physical therapy, she was active again. She finished college and became an outdoor team leader, taking groups climbing, rappelling, sailing, kayaking and hiking. She moved to Vancouver, where she studied martial arts, stunt driving and high falls, and she pursued a new career as a stunt performer. After a few television gigs, her big break came when she was hired to double for Sharon Stone in Catwoman. In 2012, Ky was voted Best Female Stunt Performer in the World for her work in the movie Thor. An expert in outdoor survival, Ky joins Seabird's Mike McDowall to talk about life as a stunt performer and to explain why she lives in a tent atop her truck in Australia. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/seabird/message
In today's episode the lad's interview Ky Furneaux from Naked and Afraid about her time on the show and how she has moved on as a survivalist and even hunts all her own food now! Ky was a stunt woman before she got into survival and now lives much like a nomad in the Australian outback.
Wow! I get a chance to interview Ky, an award winning stunt women, author, motivational speaker, survivalist, TV host and the list of awesome goes on. Ky opens up about being a women in traditional archery and the challenges that lead up to her being one of Australias favorite daughters. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Ky and I dive into her life of being a stunt-woman as well as her time surviving in the wild on the TV show Naked and Afraid. We go into depth about what happens to you physically and mentally when you are pushed to the extremes and what she had to do to make it through. We talk about her years of stunts and what it did to her body, as well as how she used the carnivore diet to heal. This was by far one of the most interesting podcasts I have had the pleasure of recording! Enjoy!
This week Al Kidner sits down with Ky Furneaux after a recent late season hunt in QLD, in pursuit of Red Deer with Trad Bows in hand. Ky sure has packed a hell of a lot of life in a short time. From breaking her back at 19, being told she would be lucky to walk again, starting out in the stunt woman business and being a part of Hollywood’s high end films. To being on Naked and Afraid, walking across the Sierra Nevadas in the US for 100km with only a pocket knife and learning to shoot a recurve. Ky is a firm believer of making life an adventure, as it’s going to try it’s best to kill us anyway. Check out Ky’s adventures online at www.kyfurneaux.com or follow her @kyfurneaux on Instagram

What's even more incredible is her story behind her success. From breaking her back at 19 years old in a car accident to then being told she would never participate in normal activities again, this really is an incredible journey of strength, courage, and commitment. Be prepared to be seriously inspired! Enjoy. About Ky: Ky Furneaux is an Australian outdoor guide, TV host, survival expert and stunt person who has appeared in over 50 films and TV productions. Ky was raised in a small country town in South Australia and has gone onto work on many big-budget Hollywood blockbusters and become one of the best stuntwomen in the world. In this conversation, we discuss: * her adventure-seeking ways as a child and the grandmother who inspired her love of travel, * the car accident at 19 and the lessons she gained from that experience, * how she found the confidence and courage to move to Canada to pursue her dream of becoming a stunt performer with no specific skills, training or even a plan, * how to deal with the ‘no’s’ you receive when you’re chasing your goals and dreams, * the strategies and process she uses to manage her fears (listen for the questions she asks herself when assessing her fear), * breaking her shoulder in a stunt in Hong Kong and the pressure and expectation (both internal and cultural) not to disclose her injury, and * why the outdoors are so empowering for women. At the age of 28 Ky Furneaux swapped her job as a guide in the Australian outback for stunt work in Hollywood. "I don't think I really realised it was gonna hurt," she says of this sometimes "brutal" industry. Now aged 41 Ky is a veteran of more than 60 films including Catwoman, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Thor. She has a reputation for taking "hard hits" but admits that the first time someone punched her in the face, she cried. She won a Taurus award which is the stunt industry's equivalent of an Oscar for her work in the blockbuster Thor and is trying to retire but the actresses she doubles for are reluctant to let her. Sanober Pardiwalla is one of the relatively few female stunt action performers in India's massive film industry. She says that being sporty and confident from an early age made her stand out among other Indian girls and propelled her to become a black belt in karate and learn to ride a motorbike. Now her skills are called upon by some of Bollywood's top action directors, but she would not recommend her profession to other Indian women. Sanober believes 'visualisation' plays a huge part in successful stunts and describes how she approached performing a fall down a 300-feet cliff face.(Photo left: Sanober Pardiwalla.
