Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the Steelers' new 4-year contract with linebacker T.J. Watt, which averages significantly less than the reported $40 million per year he was seeking. Did GM Omar Khan make a good deal, solidifying his team's future after acquisitions of big name veterans this offseason, including DK Metcalf, Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith? Or did he hamstring the future for a core that includes names like Derrick Harmon, Keeanu Benton, Joey Porter Jr., Zach Frazier and Broderick Jones? Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo later in the show to break down the Watt contract news and what it means for training camp next week at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.

They start with the offense. Is Broderick Jones under real pressure right now? Or does the lack of competition at tackle give him a longer runway to prove himself? How will Jaylen Warren cope with names including Kaleb Johnson, Kenneth Gainwell and Trey Sermon jockeying for carries in the backfield? Does Roman Wilson need to show he can be a contributor in the receiving corps next to DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III? And are Cordarrelle Patterson and Connor Heyward fighting for their jobs? On defense, Is Beanie Bishop in trouble following the move for Jalen Ramsey? Have DeMarvin Leal and Isaiahh Loudermilk run out of time to prove they deserve rotational spots on the defensive line? Are Cole Holcomb and Mark Robinson fighting for one roster spot? And do Patrick Queen and Keeanu Benton need to do more to live up to lofty expectations? Our duo tackles those questions, plus the challenges facing coach Mike Tomlin and coordinators Arthur Smith and Teryl Austin.

July 14, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 160 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday episode, Alex Kozora is back after a long weekend off and we get right to discussing the latest concerning Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt and his ongoing contract situation. Specifically, Alex and I look at the probability and possibility of Watt holding out completely at the start of training camp and thus not showing up at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe when the rest of the team does. San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings is back in the news on Monday morning as he reportedly wants a new contract or to be traded. We look at if Jennings could potentially land with the Steelers via a trade and what kind of new contract he's likely looking for this summer. As a Monday morning, most of the NFL's 2025 second round selections remain unsigned. We discuss why that's the case this year and who is most likely to blame for that. We discuss the Steelers not having to worry about that problem this year and we look back at the contract that C Zach Frazier signed last year as a second round selection. On the heels of Ross McCorkle doing a 2025 passing and receiving stats exercise during the Friday show, Alex and I go over the changes he submitted over the weekend. Alex and I discuss a few loose stat projections that he has right now for the Steelers tight ends, QB Aaron Rodgers, and WR DK Metcalf as well. With Alex back on Monday, we pick up where e left off on Wednesday when it comes to reviewing players in my annual 90 In 30 serries. Today, Alex and I discuss 12 more players from that ongoing series and they are; OLB Eku Leota, DT Isaiahh Loudermilk, DT Dean Lowry, C Ryan McCollum, G Mason McCormick, CB Cameron McCutcheon, WR Lance McCutcheon, CB Kyler McMichael, WR DK Metcalf, WR Scotty Miller, OLB Jeremiah Moon, and T Doug Nester. What does first-round NFL draft pick Derrick Harmon need to do to solidify his status as a presumed defensive line starter next to Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton? How much of him will we see in the preseason? And does he have a chance to fly under the radar a bit with big-name veterans including Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith and DK Metcalf joining the team as well? Can Kaleb Johnson seize starter duties at running back? Or are committee duties with Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell the best he can hope for? Will Jack Sawyer be battling with Nick Herbig dor the No. 3 role behind Alex Highsmith and T.J. Watt at outside linebacker? And can Yahya Black prove he belongs in the defensive line rotation? Our duo tackles those questions, then discusses later-round draft picks including Will Howard, Carson Bruener and Sebastian Castro in the third segment.

We're pleased to welcome Dr Jacqueline Orian, Senior Research Fellow at La Trobe University, to a conversation exploring her work on a new approach to autoimmune disease—along with the habits and values that help sustain a career in scientific research. While medical research is often associated with labs and data, Dr Orian sees value in slowing down and stepping outside. A long walk across campus or a quiet moment among La Trobe's gardens is part of her routine. “Walks are very important,” she says. “Smelling the flowers, taking the long way between buildings—it's important to make time for that.”Even with a daily forty-minute commute, she finds time for reading, crafts, and music. While she sometimes works from home—especially for virtual interviews—she prefers the pace and energy of the lab, where she works alongside students and colleagues on new ideas and experiments. Her current research focuses on platelets, the small blood cells known for their role in clotting. But her team has uncovered evidence that platelets are also involved in the progression of autoimmune diseases—conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. In MS, current treatments can slow disease progression, but they often suppress the immune system more broadly. This makes patients more susceptible to infections and can come with other side effects.Dr Orian is working on a more targeted alternative. Rather than suppressing the whole immune system, her aim is to modulate the role of platelets, reducing their contribution to damaging immune responses without compromising overall immune function. “Blocking a process is a bit of a sledgehammer approach,” she explains. “We're aiming for something more precise.”Her goal is to develop a platelet-targeting drug that limits tissue damage and slows or prevents disease progression. Within the next two years, she hopes to identify a promising molecule and generate early proof-of-concept data. If successful, this could offer a safer and more effective treatment option for MS and potentially other autoimmune conditions. This research also has implications beyond MS. Because platelets are involved in various immune pathways, there may be opportunities to apply this approach to a broader range of immune and neurological disorders.Dr Orian shares her findings through international conferences and collaborative networks, helping her team's work reach researchers in other disciplines. “There's a lot of opportunity for conferences,” she says. “It's where knowledge is tested and shared.”Mentorship is another key part of her role. She works closely with students in the lab, encouraging them to contribute ideas and take ownership of their research. “Their curiosity fuels mine,” she says—highlighting the value of working in an environment that supports learning and shared progress.Dr Jacqueline Orian's work is part of a growing effort to move beyond one-size-fits-all treatments and toward more tailored, precise solutions for complex diseases. With a combination of scientific focus and a commitment to thoughtful, balanced work, she is helping shape the next generation of research in autoimmune health.

July 11, 2025 - Season 15, Episode 159 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday episode, Ross McCorkle sits in for Alex Kozora, who is taking some well-deserved time off ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers reporting to Latrobe for the start of their 2025 training camp. Ross and I start this show off by discussing where Steelers DT Cameron Heyward is ranked in the Top 100 Players for 2025. We discuss Heyward's ability to bat down passes and how this year's ranking on the list feels a bit low. We also discuss where Steelers OLB T.J. Watt is likely to land in this year's Top 100 list. We also discuss the probability associated with Watt being traded this summer and how most of the fanbase probably feels about him and his contract situation this offseason. Former Steelers RB Najee Harris, who is now a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, had an unfortunate fireworks accident during the Fourth of July weekend so we make sure to go over that bit of news that surfaced on Thursday. We also discuss the fact that not too much is known concerning the contracts of new CB Jalen Ramsey and TE Jonnu Smith as of Friday morning. Even though Alex is away on this Friday, his latest post about three overlooked players currently on the Steelers roster deserves some attention and review by us. Ross and I go over the three players that Alex listed in that post and then we attempt to build it out by two more players. In the middle of this show, I sort of ambush Ross a little bit with a passing stat prediction exercise for the Steelers' 2025 season. I start with getting Ross' 2025 stat predictions for the top five wide receivers. From there, I get Ross to throw out his 2025 passing stat prediction for Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers. We then subtract the wide receiver stat predictions from his Rodgers' prediction and go over what would presumably be left over for the Steelers tight ends and running backs in 2025. Overall, this exercise produces a little bit of eye-opening and should result in some level of pushback from the listeners. It's a great exercise to conduct at this point of the offseason and I will let Ross revise his numbers for Alex and I to go over during Monday's show. Based on the Friday stat exercise, it certainly seems less than likely that the Steelers will add another notable wide receiver to their roster this offseason. Near the end of this Friday show, Ross and I discuss the plausibility and probability related to the Steelers possible signing veteran free agent safety Justin Simmons this offseason. That discussion is a result of a few things that Simmons said about his future during a recent interview from this past week. This 105-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap. We also end this episode by answering one outstanding email questions we have received this past week from listeners of the show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. A new device is expected to save Australia's wine producers hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Researchers in Melbourne have developed a smoke sensor can determine whether grapes are still salvageable after being exposed to smoke and fire. Wine Industry Smoke Detectors track smoke events like bushfires and burn offs around vineyards and advise winegrowers as to whether it's likely to taint their grapes. LA Trobe University Researcher Ian Porter told Mike Hosking all they want is for growers to avoid the emotional and financial stress from smoke events. He says that in 2020, they lost $500 million worth of grapes, and they could have saved a lot if they'd had this technology. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
