Send us a textThis week, we hangout with Jorge Tichbon — aka Swellbows — to talk slams, soundtracks, digital animation, and the originality he brings to a genre of skateboarding that may lack it at times. From early days goon-bagging around the skate parks of the Gold Coast to the years he spent living in Texas USA, Jorge breaks down the injuries that earned him his nickname, the mental grind of bouncing back, and the constant stream of creativity flowing through him. We get into skate crews, DIY culture, and how music and skating have always been two sides of the same coin. If you know, you know. Stories, laughs, and pure love for the scene, this is Swellbows (with a hang-over).ShanWATCH: Swellbows mic'ed up skating Bar Beach bowlSupport the show and get discounts (Click on the links):FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THE SHOW in exchange, I will get the HIGHEST CALIBRE guests MORE OFTEN. What happens when a passion for skateboarding meets a life of public service? Join us as we navigate the fascinating journey of John Bogaerts, a former professional skateboarder turned dedicated police officer. Along with his close-knit friends Mike Cossettini and Sean Mussett, known affectionately as Gravel Burns, John takes us back to the birth of the Newcastle skateboarding scene. From the early days at Bar Beach in 1979, where fiberglass quarter pipes first made their mark, to the vibrant community that blossomed from these beginnings, we reminisce about the friendships and experiences that defined this era.We explore the impact of missions to the USA, and icons like Lee Ralph and Gregor Rankin on Newcastle's skating standards. John shares stories of regular road trips to Mona Vale vert ramp, the sheer excitement of competing at the infamous Ridge Street ramp in Mereweather, and then the iconic Bowl-a-rama events at Bondi many years later against the likes of Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Kevin Staab. This episode is somewhat of a heartfelt exploration of the many facets of a skater's life, including John's transition to law enforcement and the eventual reconnection to his skateboarding roots. John discusses the thrill of premier skate facilities emerging from bold visions and the camaraderie of community-driven events like the Australian Bowl Riding Championships. There's a full video production this week in which John shares never before seen archival pictures and footage. Meet Ty Neilson, a beacon of resilience who has risen above his challenging past to illuminate the path of a better life, and skate shop ownership. In this episode, we unravel his journey from a tumultuous upbringing in a government housing area, to finding solace and community in Skateboarding… and Cricket. Ty reflects on the importance of local skate shops as community pillars that not only provide the tangible items required to skate, but moreover, the intangible elements; a sense of belonging, inspiration and significant cultural influence.Ty's journey is one of perseverance and commitment. He recounts the day he chose to walk away from financial security by quitting his job as a concrete cutter, and spending all his house deposit money to open a skate shop. A small price to pay in order to follow a dream, and not work for someone else's.From the emotional ties to skateboarding culture and its role in the Olympics to the societal judgments and stereotypes we all grapple with, this conversation is a heartfelt tribute to personal evolution, and why some things just aren't worth stressing about. I'm thrilled to share my latest podcast episode with an incredibly inspiring guest, Adrian “AJ” Jones. AJ had a massive heart attack at age 47 that completely changed the trajectory of his life. What emerged was a calling to help others bring more meaning and vitality into their second act. In my conversation with AJ, we explore that pivotal moment when he found himself suddenly confronting his mortality. The clarity it triggered sent him on a quest to discover his true purpose and live out the rest of his years to the fullest. AJ's message particularly resonates with me and my audience of over-50s who are searching for what's next. His own second chance at life ignited a passion for inspiring personal growth and transformation. This led him to leave corporate finance to launch a company called MORE aimed at helping Gen Xers flourish in midlife. In the episode, AJ shares vulnerably about the loneliness epidemic plaguing modern middle age. He's on a mission to create caring community for people trying to navigate major life transitions like empty nesting, retirement, loss of loved ones, and career reinvention. I loved drilling into specifics about how MORE facilitates shared experiences, small group coaching, and online connection to foster personal breakthroughs. If you, like me, feel called to live your 50s, 60s and beyond with more purpose, meaning, and fulfillment – this conversation is sure to spark some “YES” energy about reigniting your potential. I wholeheartedly believe anyone listening will feel moved, seen, and uplifted by AJ's wisdom around midlife metamorphosis. Please have a listen and let the inspiration wash over you! Then drop me a note – I'd love to hear your key takeaways. Over the holidays, A'ndre chatted with AUKUS Defense Investor Network Co-Chairs Heather Richman (U.S.), Adrian Jones (U.K.), and Jamie Watson (Australia) about how AUKUS, the trilateral security partnership between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, aims to fill key gaps in critical technologies. We talk about what AUKUS is, how it works, and why it is unique as a defense technology sharing agreement. The three co-chairs summarize the differences between Pillar I and Pillar II (why AUKUS isn't just about submarines, but way more!), highlighting some of the key tech focus areas in Pillar II. They also share insights into how their respective countries view AUKUS and defense innovation, and discuss why they co-founded the AUKUS Defense Investors Network.
This case comes with caution, Michael Jones and Heather Jones would hold Adrian prisoner and abuse him in the most horrific way.
This case is one of the worst, listen with caution.
Adrian Jones is venture capitalist in insurance and former reinsurance executive. Organizations that he has been a part of have invested in 40+ young insurance sector companies. Adrian has been a Board director or observer at eight young companies including distributors, carriers, and service providers in insurance. Before joining HSCM Ventures as a Partner in 2021, he was Deputy CEO of P&C Partners at SCOR, where he set-up and led SCOR P&C Ventures. From 2010 to 2016, he was head of strategy at RenaissanceRe. He started his career in 2001 at Bain & Co and has lived/worked in New York, Paris, Bermuda, Brussels, and Stockholm. Comments made by Adrian are made in a personal capacity only and should not be associated with any organization to which he is afiliated, employed, or an investor. His comments are solely for educational purposes and do not represent recommendations or research. Highlights from the Show Adrian started in consulting, then worked in reinsurance and venture investing He has been looking at the headcount in the InsurTech sector starting with data from mid-2020, and saw that employment has increased from about 75,000 to over 100,000 In the downturn, there was a retrenchment, with companies reducing staff by 31% on average, with the bulk of that being driven by mid-sized companies (200-1000 employees) There's been a lot of movement recently, between startups and incumbents, and people from outside the industry coming into it (and vice versa) This also portends the changes we've now seen in the traditional insurance companies, especially in admitted carriers, some of which have been reducing staff Adrian spoke at ITC on lessons from early InsurTechs (founded after 2008) who are now worth $5 B or more, and looked into what lessons we can learn from their success He noted 7 lessons from their experience A surprising finding is that technology is not the differentiator He found leadership teams that were experienced, entry into dislocated markets, partnership and support with regulators, and time to prove their model's success "Insurance is a business of compounding reserves over time, and many young businesses haven't had the chance to prove that their compounding machine works? You can see his slides at https://www.linkedin.com/posts/adrianjo_adrian-jones-keynote-at-insuretech-connect-activity-7125587320308682752-NhL6 Insurance isn't about the giant TAM and high traction for Adrian, who would rather see less traction but the right traction rather than getting lots of traction that ends up being bad business Adrian has also seen reinsurers support the new InsurTech risk takers, whether backing programs where 100% gets ceded, to even carriers where they're ceding 40-60% of the premium (whereas an established carrier seeds 6% on average) He didn't see the reinsurance veto people predicted We talked about how to address the issue where coverage is too expensive to buy and too cheap to sell in some pockets today, and what role parametric could play in solving that He sees parametric as a good solution, but in niche situations like a deductible buy down You face basis risk and a need for distributors who are willing to educate consumers while taking potential E&O exposure if insureds are unhappy when their loss isn't paid because the parametric trigger wasn't met This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. As she walked home with her dog Scrappy, she was followed by a 16-year-old boy as she walked on a bridle path.Adrian Jones did not know Kelly, and to date, no motive has been established for what he did, but that morning, he beat Kelly to death using a piece of gym equipment. He was arrested just days after Kelly's body was discovered on September 30 in a stream near a disused colliery.Seeing as a minimum of 12 years imprisonment was where the Judge had to begin, Mr Justice Davis handed Jones an 11-year and 79-day sentence, given that Jones had already spent 286 days in custody. Jones attempted to appeal his murder conviction, but the Court of Appeal rejected it in October 2009.After Jones died of natural causes on February 18, 2018, his appeal continued, with his family pursuing the case and referring it to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), who referred it to the Court of Appeal. For all things British Murders, please visit my website:britishmurders.comIntro music:David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusicReferences:britishmurders.com/kellyhyde Learn more about your ad choices. “My daddy keeps hitting me in the head and punches me in the stomach and my mom keeps pulling on my ears and it really hurts. Mommy and Daddy lock me in my room by myself. Mommy and Daddy can't feed me.” This was a statement made by Adrian Jones, who at the time was just 5 years old and 2 years away from his preventable death. I say preventable, because as we will learn, there were numerous opportunities and a number of adults who could have stepped in and saved this child, but time and time and time again, they failed him. Warning: This episode will anger you. It will disgust you. It will make you cry for a small child who dreamed of one day becoming a football player, but instead, was beaten, tortured, starved, murdered, discarded, and tossed in a sty for pigs to feed on. PLUS: Don't let anyone tell you that Diet Mountain Dew can't rid you of someone's DNA. Executive Producers for this episode are Christine Rivera, Beth Davis, and Dusty Jay Hicks. Life gets super clear when you're about to die. And it was no different for Adrian Jones who was having a “widow-maker” heart attack. As he lay there on the hospital table for emergency surgery, three things became really clear: 1) He didn't want his wife to fly home a widow, 2) He didn't get to tell his kids he loved them yet that day, and 3) He was going to walk out of the damn hospital. And that was just the beginning. Seriously. This story! It's like the Universe just lined everything up for Adrian Jones. And it did. After walking out of the very hospital he was born in on his very birthday, he left with the clarity of mind that only those who have cheated death do. He had to find his birth parents. And then the Universe obliged in the most beautiful, even haunting way. And you just need to listen to this episode to know what I mean.We talk about learning to listen to our bodies, the power of friendship and community, the synchronicity of the Universe, the beauty of family. What's not to love here in this episode?Find out more about Adrian Jones here:Adrian Jones is a financial services veteran and the host of the Profound Awesomeness podcast. Adrian Jones is the CEO of Zip World UK, a company that specializes in creating unique and thrilling adventures. From the world's fastest zipline to underground mini-golf, Ade is an expert in taking experiences to the next level. Ade began his career working the frontlines at Alton Towers. This began a career with Merlin Entertainments spanning nearly three decades, where he served as General Manager of Madam Tussauds in Las Vegas and Los Angelos, opened LEGOLAND Florida as General Manager in 2011, before being promoted to President & Divisional Director of Midway Attractions in North America, and then Global New Concepts Development Director.. Recently, he became the CEO of Zip World, where he continues to innovate and create new, exciting experiences for guests. In this interview, Ade shares his insights on adventure tourism, the importance of giving people the freedom to succeed, and building strong relationships with local communities. Adventure Tourism "The adventure market is growing massively." Adventure tourism gives guests the opportunity to experience some of the most unique things our world has to offer. When Ade started with Zip World, he was impressed with how positive the reviews were and how engaged guests were with the facilities. By providing a wide range of attractions for the entire family and creating a great guest experience, Zip World captures the attention of their guests. Ultimately, the attractions industry is about selling fun, something Ade fell in love with when he got his start. One of the best ways to sell fun is to create a facility that can't be replicated virtually. For instance, the caverns at Zip World contain 200 years of formations, and the personal interactions with employees can't be replicated in the digital space. Freedom to Succeed "If someone is frightened to fail, they won't take any risks." Another key to the success of Zip World is the employee culture. Ade knows that the ‘People Agenda' is a huge priority when it comes to building a successful culture. To take employees to the next level, Ade emphasizes the importance of creating the freedom to succeed. By implementing this culture, employees get the chance to build who they are and help create a dynamic business. Mistakes build who we are, and by creating a freedom to succeed, we also create the freedom to fail. Failure is important, and everyone can learn from their mistakes. Ade knows that by failing, we can become stronger in the places we were broken before, which is something that could benefit any operation. Community Relations “We were very sympathetic; we listened.” One of Ade's greatest challenges was leading the development of LEGOLAND Florida while simultaneously creating a great relationship with the Winter Haven community. By holding town halls and being open to feedback from the locals, Winter Haven is now proud to have LEGOLAND Florida as a staple in their community. Ade's most valuable lessons were about the importance of following through on your promises and the impact of small gestures. When working with homeowners and existing communities, it's crucial to be mindful and considerate. By being transparent and keeping promises, trust can be built and disasters can be avoided. These actions contribute to fostering a positive and cooperative spirit within the community. To connect with Ade, you can find him on LinkedIn. Last week, Adrian Jones, Daoyu Zhang, Steven Massey, Yuri Deigin, Louis Nemzer, and Steven Quay reported out on an ingenious analysis of genomic datasets from NCBI that indicate a lab in Wuhan was performing potentially risky genetic engineering manipulations on a novel coronavirus that was previously unreported. The manipulation? Inserting a MERS spike protein into a previously unreported coronavirus. MERS has a case fatality rate of over 30%. What is clear from the analysis is that at least one lab in Wuhan was performing risky gain-of-function research on unreported coronaviruses before the pandemic started, the kind that could have created SARS-CoV-2. It also shows that risky GOF research is being conducted in Wuhan that has no identifiable medical benefit, but has the potential to create a pandemic level pathogen. Today I interview Steven Massey, a professor of bioinformatics that has been actively researching the origin of SARS-CoV-2 since the pandemic began and one of the authors of this significant discovery. We discuss the paper, how his team discovered this novel engineered coronavirus from Wuhan, and what it means in the search for the origin of COVID-19...

Today's guest is one of the smartest people in the insurance sector and I am really lucky to have been able to spend time talking to him fairly regularly over the course of the last few years. I first got to know him just as the whole insurtech movement started to really take shape in around 2016 to 2017 and ever since that time he's always been open and honest about the way he appraised the new wave of technological investment sweeping through the industry. He never lost his critical faculties and never got caught up in the hype that defined part of that era. But that doesn't mean he's a sceptic either – he's actually quite a rare animal – an enthusiastic but realistic adopter and promoter of better ways of doing the business of insurance. Today's episode is one I am really pleased with because it does the job of a podcast properly. Over the years I have had many enlightening conversations with Adrian just like the one you are about to hear. But up until now I had never recorded one. So prepare yourself for a masterclass in what the smart money thinks about the state of insurtech. Embedded insurance, insurtech bubbles – whether they existed and whether they have now burst – how the hard reinsurance market will affect start-ups and even the very logic of the phrase insurtech itself are all addressed in the discussion. I'll wager you'll get more benefit from listening to Adrian for 45 minutes than you will from attending any 3-day Insurtech conference. Adrian Jones is a partner at HSCM Ventures, the venture capital investment arm of Hudson Structured Capital Management Ltd., an alternative asset manager in re/insurance and transport. Today's episode is an in-depth look at capital-raising, whether funding losses is a viable model, revising business plans, and what types of people become successful. ✅Carriers remain 'followers' rather than fast followers, because culturally the industry has been operated more conservatively than other industries. ✅There are good examples of companies who are early adopters taking advantage of the new technologies and insurtech and exist in all shapes and sizes all over the world. ✅Talented insurance people who find opportunities to connect, which can mean attending ITC and sending around a report afterwards, is how new leadership is identified and formed. A lot! Evvio Co-Founder Adrian Jones started his entrepreneurial career at 15 years old in the videogame design industry, only to find that his passion for technology and the impact it can have on the world around him would eventually propel his career into the ecommerce payments space. For those of you who may not know, Evvio is an ecommerce technology company that provides opportunities for anyone, anywhere to participate in ecommerce. They specialize in person-to-person emerging ecommerce transactions and their technology adds tremendous value to exchange networks such as: ● Social commerce● Super apps● Online gaming ● And the metaverse!Fluid commerce is probably one of the biggest buzzwords you'll hear in this podcast, with Evvio driving this intention for their target audience. And one of their main objectives is to make ecommerce inclusive in that it doesn't require a bank account or credit card to transact. As for their competitive advantage, the ability to earn and spend without value passing out of the e-commerce network is the first thing that Adrian points out, followed closely by fraud prevention capabilities that allow the seller and buyer to maintain a cryptographic agreement of services being used.Tune in this week to hear Adrian talk about the future of our industry as it relates to the projected growth of person-to-person ecommerce, the demise of credit and debit card payments, and the social commerce exchange that will spike from $560 billion in 2020 to $2.9 trillion in 2026. As for what he projects beyond the next 10 years, he has this to say based on his own experience: “Much as we try to forecast what the world will be like in years ahead, there are just so many things we don't see coming.” Don't miss this one!
