POPULARITY
Jim Calafiore has established himself as one of comics' most distinctive and versatile artists over a career spanning three decades. Known for his dynamic layouts and expressive character work, Jim first gained recognition at Valiant in the early 90s, working on titles like Armorines and Magnus, Robot Fighter. From there, it was on to DC and Marvel, where he contributed to series including Aquaman, Deadpool, Secret Six with writer Gail Simone, and a defining run on the X-men offshoot Exiles. After reteaming with Simone on the Kickstarter-funded graphic novel Leaving Megalopolis, Jim caught the crowdfunding bug, and introduced his latest venture, NED, Lord of the Pit, to the world, writing and drawing two volumes of supernatural comedic action in the series so far. In "Gone Rogue," the latest episode, Nora West-Allen stole blueprints from a company named after her. In the very opening of the episode, Nora headed straight for G. Simone & Associates: Architecture, Planning, Interiors. There, she took the blueprints for McCulloch Technologies off the server, then fried it with her Speed Force lightning. Simone, of course, can be credited with bringing Rag Doll into the spotlight. In her cult classic run on The Secret Six with Dale Eaglesham, Rag Doll was an integral member of the team; the character quickly became a DC fan favorite after her run. Since Rag Doll was featured heavily in "Gone Rogue," it makes sense for Simone to get such a major shout-out. In addition to her work on The Secret Six, Simone is a prolific comic book writer. Her major credits include Birds of Prey, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Red Sonja, Deadpool, Leaving Megalopolis and Clean Room. She recently wrote Domino for Marvel Comics and now serves as chief architect for Lion Forge's superhero line, which makes her Flash namedrop all the more fitting. https://www.cbr.com/flash-gail-simone-reference/ NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/arrow/arrow-everythings-about-to-explode-in-the-new-promo-for-season-7-episode-21-living-proof-a168064 (Date: 29 April 2019) Episode: “Living Proof” [Season 7 Episode 21] Air Date: Monday, May 6, 2019 Summary: Oliver finds himself in a precarious position. He's not only talented and hard working, but a genuinely decent person and enthusiastic comic fan. We talk about his work with Nathan Edmondson http://www.amazon.com/The-Activity-Volume-1-TP/dp/1607065614 and then get in depth about that same creative team on the new Marvel Now's Punisher. http://www.mitchgerads.com/2013/10/all-new-marvel-punisher-announced.html 01:02:03 - BLOOPERS 01:03:40 - OUTRO MUSIC - "Spirit of the 90's" Portlandia Season 1, Episode 22 Follow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/JKsHappyHour https://twitter.com/JK_Woodward https://twitter.com/theVoice123 Follow our guests: https://twitter.com/MitchGerads Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/JKs-Happy-Hour/164886523650171 Discount Comic Book Services: http://www.dcbservice.com/index.aspx Instock Trades: http://www.instocktrades.com/ Join us on the forums at: http://www.forumforgeeks.com Blogs: http://thetaylornetwork.wordpress.com/ http://jkwoodwardart.blogspot.com/
In our last comics episode we discussed all the confusing and upsetting things happening over at DC Comics, and there’s even more to talk about! Don’t worry though, this episode is light on doom and gloom and filled with awesome comics. We interview Gail Simone, of Secret Six and Batgirl fame, about her forthcoming projects including a bold new book from DC, The Movement, her fan-funded Leaving Megalopolis, and clashing swords with Red Sonja. Join Cap, Aaron, Adam, Tony, and Brian as we report on MegaCon 2013, say goodbye to Damian Wayne, celebrate just how much ass Marvel NOW is kicking, and fill you in on what comics you've got to check out.Learn more about your ad choices. Jim has been on a few of our conventions episodes, but this is the first time we've had him on for a full interview. We cover his work for Valiant Comics in the 90's, his run on Exiles for Marvel and Aquaman and Secret Six for DC. He's now got a Kickstarter campaign for Leaving Megalopolis - a graphic novel with writer Gail Simone. (1:09:40)
The crew is back and ready to talk some big news out of Marvel Now and Kickstarter for Leaving Megalopolis! We recommend this week that you read Spider-Men, Batgirl, Batman and a bunch of other stuff! Finally, Chris McFeely and Nicole give us the low down on Gambit #1. It's a must listen!
