Leon Walker, Jr. grew up in a family full of Army and Marine Corps veterans. He tried to enlist in the Marines but the recruiter didn't want to be bothered on his lunch hour. Within minutes, Walker joined the U.S. Navy. He was initially assigned to serve as a deckhand on the fast frigate USS Reid, but on his first deployment he started learning how to navigate. For the next 21 years, he served as a navigator on many different deployments before rising to the rank of command master chief.On his second deployment, Walker and the USS Reid were in the southern Persian Gulf in May 1987, when another fast frigate, the USS Stark, was struck by two missiles fired by an Iraqi pilot in the northern part of the gulf during the Iran-Iraq War. The Reid raced to help and arrived the next day to find the Stark smoking and listing. Thirty-seven Americans were killed on the Stark and 21 others were injured.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Walker takes us step by step through the very difficult work of searching the Stark for the remains of those killed in the missile strike and tells us what he saw and did while on board. He also explains how he became numb do his duties that day and how it created post-traumatic stress that was not diagnosed for decades. Finally, Walker reflects on other deployments to the Persian Gulf and what it was like to navigate through the Suez Canal and the very rough waters of the Bering Sea.

Leon himself has been in several long-term relationships with women, during which he was often emotionally distant and manipulative. Leon, through his trials and tribulations, became self sufficient, driven, focused and wanted something out of life, so by the age of 13, he worked several jobs to take care of himself and help his family. Leon ultimately graduated from Shaw High schooling 1983 from a class of 466 students, however, of those 466 students, Leon was the only to take the military entrance exam (ASVAB) 5 times, he was also the only one to fail it, four times. He eventually passed the military entrance exam on his fifth try, by 1 point. He scored a 31(the minimum) out of (a maximum) of 99. That 1 point would change his life, forever. Leon attended boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes (then Naval Training Center) in November 1983. He attended Seaman ATD (now Boatswain's Mate "A" School) from January 14,1984 until March 14, 1984. Dan Saladino meets some of the people who turned to seeds and grew food in the lockdown. As well as supermarket panic buying, seed sellers also saw huge spikes in sales. Seed producer David Price describes how, as lockdown approached, orders from customers increased by around 600 per cent. The impact Covid-19 has on food supplies explains some of this. Many farmers who supplied restaurants had to quickly start growing different types of food which they could sell into markets that hadn’t been shut down. Veg box schemes were also seeing unbelievable levels of demand and needed access to more seed to ensure future supplies. Lockdown also meant that people gardens were spending more time in them and perhaps experimenting by planting seeds to grow food for the first time. Seed producers became aware that many customers were being motivated by a desire to become more self-sufficient and escape the growing supermarket queues. With the help of gardener and writer Alys Fowler Dan finds out more about our changing relationship with seeds and the power and autonomy seed saving provides. Phil Howard, Associate Professor at Michigan State University explains how the global supply of seed now rests in a small number of corporate hands. In Bristol, Dan meets people who are striving for a new form of food independence during the pandemic, and beginning to grow their own. Another seed producer Fred Groom of Vital Seeds argues that more of us should be saving seeds, growing food and helping to save diversity. He's setting up an online course this summer as a way of recovering some of these lost skills (to find out more go to https://vitalseeds.co.uk/. For decades, helping to keep the seed saving flame alive in gardens and allotments have been various communities around the UK who have continued to rely on them for fresh food. A very young and dark life, this is the story of Leon R. Walker’s youth and his deeply rooted de-mons. From his earliest memories to his last year of high school, he recalls in great detail, his childhood as disturbing, turbulent, and mind shattering. Born in 1965, as a black kid growing up in the inner city of Cleveland and East Cleveland in the 70s and early 80s, he was exposed to pov-erty, racism, and violence. The victim of a broken home, Leon somehow survived his youth, de-termined to learn from his mistakes and succeed in a seemingly inhospitable world. His young mind warped, his eyes deceived, he saw and engaged in things no child his age should ever see, or do. Leon R. Walker Jr. is a 32-year decorated Naval Veteran with more than eleven deployments to the Persian Gulf and other areas of conflict throughout the world. Leon sailed the seas for fifteen years on five different Naval vessels. As a Navy instructor, recruiter, and company commander (drill sergeant), he was trained, qualified, and trusted to lead thousands of sailors during his career. He and his sailors received numerous awards and accolades.  A well-spoken and articulate mentor, teacher, and motivational speaker, Leon’s love and passion are people from all walks of life. He’s a father of three and a godfather of three. The Leon Walker case has received national attention as a landmark case related to email privacy issues.  Leon Walker Faces felony charges and up to 5-years in prison for reading his wife's emails. Expert pundits on CNN have debated this case and many feel there is no merit to the charges, especially at a felony level. Leon Walker provided an exclusive interview with Divorce Source Radio's Steve Peck. This show provides a window into what Leon Walker has endured since being charged with the crime in 2011.  Leon tells his version of the story and noted author and forensic trial consultant, Dean Tong, helps us sort through the legal maneuvers the prosecutor and defense might be considering. Mr. Walker has been financially devastated and his life has been turned upside down due the charges filed against him.  Does the county prosecuting the case really want to spend close to $500,000 of taxpayers' money to lock this man up for reading his wife's email?  Mr. Walker claims he did so for the well-being of his kids.
