Over his distinguished military career, Stephen rose to the rank of Command Master Chief and received numerous commendations—including the Bronze Star with Valor for Heroism—for his courage and leadership in some of the most demanding environments imaginable. Our conversation dives deep into what it takes to become a Navy SEAL, not just physically, but mentally. Stephen shares insights on how ordinary people can do extraordinary things through discipline, purpose, and the ability to suffer well. We talk about the grit required to persevere, how to bounce back from failure, and why leadership is ultimately about serving others under pressure. This episode is packed with hard-won wisdom on resiliency, personal growth, and leading with integrity—both in combat and in everyday life.

Damo is joined by published author, business owner, podcast host, and active-duty Command Master Chief, Armon Owens. They discuss “imposter syndrome” and what would give someone the audacity to write a book. They talk about being comfortable in your skin and using your unique abilities to stand out and be remembered. What does Big Boi and Andre 3000 have to do with all of this? What motivated Armon to join the Navy back in the late 90s? They discuss Armon's book “The Fight to Lead” and why it's important to have military-centric books about leadership. What happens when your Executive Officer disgustedly tells you that you will not succeed at your first command? What's the most effective way to respond to negativity? Sometimes mentors can creep up on you unexpectedly. What's the significance of planting the right vs the wrong seed early on in a Sailor's Career? How do you structure a book? How do you even start it? What goes into the research of writing a book? Do you choose your audiobook narrator? Armon discussed his latest venture, a podcast named “Leadership State of Mind” and what motivated him and his co-host Anthony Amato to get started. Damo discusses his issue with being an association president. He also talks about the power of having a strong support system willing to check on you when you need it. CMDCM Owens once had to replace a Chief who was fired. At this time he was a Second Class Petty Officer. Damo asks him about the experience of being placed in this role. Armon gives his quick Father's Day thoughts and speaks on life in Japan. Damon and Damo are joined by active-duty Command Master Chief and host of ‘The Rising Son' podcast, Dean Howell. The guys kick it off with a conversation about Dean's upbringing. From a Harvard University “recruit” to a Navy Recruiting Office, Damo asks Dean what made him “Choose Navy.” This turned out to be an excellent choice as Dean made Master Chief in 15 years. He also spent the greater part of his military career in Japan, where he met his wife and raised his three daughters. Dean is an advocate for Service members maximizing on their talents while still serving our country. The guys discuss alcoholism in the Navy. With Dean being on the tail end of a “75 Hard” challenge, discipline and challenging yourself to fight temptations is a reoccurring theme. How the hell does someone make Master Chief in 15 Years? What the heck does it mean to be in the “right place at the right time”? Why does Damo hate that expression so much? The guys discuss where the Command Master Chief falls in the command's organization structure. You may be surprised by this. Is the Senior Enlisted Advisor community a separate entity than the CPO Mess? How's the state of the CPO Mess right now? What can we do to fix some of the negative thoughts about the CPO Mess? Damon wants to know how Dean approaches his Chief's Mess on Day 1. Dean discusses one of the craziest things that he's seen as a Command Master Chief. The life of a podcaster is explored. The guys talk the power of “thinking big” and taking risks. Dean dishes some detail on the book that he's currently working on, ‘H.O.L.D. F.A.S.T.' which he intends to release later this year. Is the Navy pay system “all jacked up”? How does a CMDCM feel about “CMDCM pay”? Do Command Master Chiefs make enough money? There is so much more in this episode. The NAVADMINs for CMDCM and CMDCS and CWO/LDO were released. Congrats to everyone that was selected. The Army's “first full time rap artists just started basic training” but what do we think about it? Can you be a stripper and/or have an OnlyFans account if you're in the Military? Did you miss episode notes? Well, here you go. Hope this satisfies you. Why are we still talking about masks going into 2023? Damon expresses his concerns about a new mask mandate in San Diego county. He reflects on his recent back surgery. Why does it feel like you have to go through a gauntlet to get an MRI in the Navy? If you want to know the reason that we didn't have a video for our last episode, look no further, we address our lack of visuals right now. Damo discusses his first week acting as the Command Master Chief. Wait until you hear what he did on his first day in “the seat”! Is the Navy “proactive” or “reactive,” when it comes to security measures and practices? We don't want to see any one lines on that New Year mid-entry so don't mess that up! What's the best duty section in the Navy? A Chick-Fil-A owner is in hot water for paying his employees in food. A Sailor was arrested for voyeurism at Home Depot. Another SEAL team commander has recently passed away. The guys run through a few of the recently released NAVADMINs: Senior Enlisted Advanced to Position, Uniform Regulations (Diamond Earrings), High Year Tenure, and Everyone is a Recruiter. Damo reads an email from a listener about boot camp showers. The guys have a small therapy session followed by a brief reflection of the Civil Rights movement. “Best of the Year” in movies, tv, and books are discussed. Retired Navy Command Master Chief Larry Wilkse joins The Republican Professor Podcast to talk about his 30 year Navy career, which took him from the Navy's wrestling team to OS A-School to Surface Warfare qualification on the way to BUDS to a host of commands and deployments after becoming Special Warfare Sea Air and Land (SEAL) qualified. He deployed 14 times, had a couple changes of ratings, including multiple combat deployments where he was awarded multiple Bronze Stars and many other Navy and Joint service citations. He ended his career with the rating of Command Master Chief, having been a Plank Owner and Command Master Chief of the then-new SEAL Team 7 (new at the time 20 years ago). Our discussion is wide-ranging, covering everything from combat to his view on teaching firearms to inner city youth and women to what he thinks about the so-called "assault weapon" ban for civilians to one of my favorites, the art and science of taking naps (Larry can time his naps exactly to the minute, ahead of time, and wake spontaneously) (lots of suffering in order to get to that point). He has also run for office, getting 43% of the vote in a +29 D district in California. Dude. Larry is a fascinating individual and an absolute delight to shoot the bull with. He's a man's man with a heart of gold. He clearly wants to leave the world a better place than how he found it and is willing to sacrifice to see that happen. Master Chief Wilkse (who would rather be called just "Larry") spent 30 years in the United States Naval Service, rising to the top of the enlisted ranks as well as to the apex of the operational capacities of the naval service, but Larry is still serving America. Now he does so in a private capacity as president of Vanguard Training and Consulting, a firearms training group that brings quality small arms and situational awareness training to civilians, especially women, with appropriate sensitivity and effectiveness. Check out https://femalefirearmsinstructor.com/about/ for more information. Happy birthday, United States Navy. The Republican Professor is a pro-Navy, pro-serving-America, pro-getting-the-bad-guys, pro-let-me-tell-you-what-I-really-think-about-the-"assault-weapon"-ban, pro-man's-man, pro-female-firearm-instructor, pro-let's-reach-the-inner-city-youth, pro-art-and-science-of-taking-naps podcast. Therefore, welcome Command Master Chief Larry Wilkse (SEAL, SW, AW), USN (ret.), 30 year combat veteran and now president of Vanguard Training and Consulting (bringing situational awareness and firearms instruction to women across the country) or in other words, welcome Larry.
