Send us a textWestern culture is increasingly polarized, and Christians often feel they are “under siege” by the dominant secular culture. Compounding the problem is that Christians cannot agree among themselves on how to respond to an increasingly “post-Christian " culture. Susan and Alex talk with authors Randy Pope and Al Erisman about how we can engage the culture we live in as disciples of Jesus. Grab a copy of Living with Purpose in a Polarizing World here. RANDY POPE has practiced law for 45 years in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Since 2017, he has served as City Attorney for the City of Hattiesburg. Happy Wednesday! Today on the podcast, we welcome back Alycia Wood! Alycia shares about her faith journey and the various doubts she experienced as a young woman. She explains why she stepped out of atheism and how she eventually came to know Christ. She also chats about historical facts about Jesus, how Christianity explains the world we live in, and more. Alycia and Janell also chat about why there's so much suffering in the world, the hope for Christians, finding our identity in Christ, and so much more. We hope you enjoy this episode! About Alycia As a child growing up in the church, Alycia always had questions. She wanted to dig deeper into the Christian faith beyond the Sunday morning sermon. That fueled an independent search which led to her digging into the larger questions of life. While studying for a degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology at Robert Wesleyan College, Alycia discovered Apologetics. It changed the course of her life. Her quest for a deeper understanding of her Christianity had a name. She went on to get her Master's in Social Justice from Marygrove College to further her passion for serving those in need in the developing world. This led to various volunteering opportunities at orphanages, prisons, and shelters for the homeless in various countries including Haiti, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. A few years after her travels were completed, she was able to spend a year studying Apologetics in England. Alycia spent many years as a teacher's aide and substitute teacher for multiple grade levels. Following, she has spent over nine years doing full-time apologetics ministry where she travels and speaks on various topics relevant to our culture. She is currently with the C. S. Lewis Society in Tampa. In her spare time, she is an avid sports fan, musician and grower of all things edible in her garden. ____ We would love to thank our Patrons for all their amazing support! This past Sunday, we heard from Tom Woodward, NewLife Missionary with the C.S. Lewis Society. Tom shared from Acts 1:1- 12 as well as an update on his ministry.
Guest: Alycia Wood, apologist with The C.S. Lewis Society The C.S. Lewis Society was organized by Princeton University students in 1975, as a guest-speaker forum for the campus community to hear Christian scholars articulate a biblical perspective on topics of wide public concern. After years of fruitful ministry, the Society was re-launched on the campus of Trinity College of Florida in 1988 as a fellowship of those committed to explaining and defending the Christian faith internationally. Our outreach has focused especially on university campuses and nations that are dominated by skeptical attitudes toward the core truths of Christianity. What is a Woman? documentary by Matt Walsh - so many people ask Matt, “Why do you even care?” Alycia replies: We should, as Christians, grieve with those who grieve, care about those who are hurting and need help. The Western mindset is very individualistic…but the Eastern mindset includes the sense that what you do affects your family and the entire community! When others struggle with gender dysphoria and make decisions to transition, their decision does affect others - including you and me! God has designed us for community and we each have a responsibility to help others to the best of our ability - to speak truth in love is an important part of that responsibility. Parents, consider these things if your son or daughter is talking about gender dysphoria: You are the parent, don't just let their “feelings” override the facts about their God-designed sexuality - dig into the issues they are facing, ask questions. Social media can be filled with destructive voices that fill the minds of young people with lies and deception - help your children learn to tune out false narratives and discern truth from fiction. Build your “support” group of like-minded, Christ-centered folks to do life with. For parents whose children are dealing with transgender ideology, Alycia recommends a group called 4thWaveNow (a community of people who question the medicalization of gender-atypical youth) for a challenging perspective. Get professional help for your child - someone who is actually going to deal with the mental health aspects, not just transition your children from their current gender to another! Alycia recommends that you watch this powerful and very disturbing video from destransitioner Chloe Cole on the devastating effects of transgender surgery. Alycia also recommends that you watch this video of Jordan Peterson speaking with detransitioner Chloe Cole about the harmful effects of transgender ideology. You may have to switch schools (if you're not at PCA) or friend groups, etc. The “social contagion” aspect of this is real - change the environment and the narrative in which your child is swimming. Why I no longer use transgender pronouns - and why you shouldn't either - by Rosaria Butterfield - Article and Video Alycia recommends Jordan Peterson's video interview of Miriam Grossman, M.D. called Parental Trauma in a World of Gender Insanity. The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution by Dr. Carl Trueman (or the shorter version of the same material: Strange New World). Our outreach has focused especially on university campuses and nations that are dominated by skeptical attitudes toward the core truths of Christianity. Today, in some countries, misgendering a person (using a pronoun that is different than what another person prefers) can actually result in criminal penalties! You need to understand how the world is using words - “sex” is limited to your biology, “gender” is how you feel about things or how you identify. Excellent Resources: Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters by Abigail Shrier The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Excessive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution by Dr. Carl Trueman What is a Woman? documentary by Matt Walsh As of 2021, 1.8% of people under 18 years of age identified as transgender. Over 80% of these individuals were born female, lived with their parents, and had zero history of gender dysphoria as children. The majority of the girls that are transitioning have one or more of the following characteristics: depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autism - and about half of these girls were engaged in self harm before any type of gender dysphoria. This is a mental health issue that is not being treated properly. Also, about 65% of these individuals greatly increased their social media usage just before coming out as transgender. Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria - “all of a sudden” groups of young people are feeling that their gender does not match their assigned sex… Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!

C.S. Lewis is undoubtedly one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the past 100 years, and despite his death being more than a half century ago, his work contains many insights which apply to contemporary trends in philosophy, politics and society just as much as they did in his own time. Today, we are joined by one of the modern liberty movement's most well-known and effective leaders: David Theroux. David is the founder and president of both The Independent Institute and the C.S. Lewis Society of California, and he presently serves on the LCI Advisory Board. In this episode, he guides us through a scholarly, practical discussion of C.S. Lewis' work (with an emphasis on natural law) and how it applies to both the philosophy of liberty and present-day societal issues. Unless you're stuck in a wardrobe, you won't want to miss this.
The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
In place of our scheduled interview with David Conn, who has unfortunately had to postpone due to illness, we take the opportunity to share a fascinating address by David Theroux, Founder and President of the C. S. Lewis Society of California, entitled: "C. S. Lewis on Mere Liberty and the Evils of Statism". Delivered as the keynote talk at the first annual conference of Christians for Liberty, at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, on the 2nd of August 2014, this address explores the extent to which Lewis was critical of the modern State, with its tendency towards scientism and technocratic control, and identifies a nexus of beliefs and values - of which Lewis's Christian theism was the foundation - as the motivation for that critique. As David Theroux puts it: "Throughout his work, Lewis infused an interconnected worldview that championed objective truth, moral ethics, natural law, literary excellence, reason, science, individual liberty, personal responsibility and virtue, and Christian theism. In so doing, he critiqued naturalism, reductionism, nihilism, positivism, scientism, historicism, collectivism, atheism, statism, coercive egalitarianism, militarism, welfarism, and dehumanization and tyranny of all forms." In a world in which Christianity and the State are too often seen as natural allies, we offer this address as arguing that we might call libertarian values are fundamentally consistent with Christian thought. (The address by David Theroux included in this episode is Copyright © the C. S. Lewis Society of California, all rights reserved, and used here with kind permission.)
