Laura starts a new series unravelling the murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez and speaks with Hazel Thornton, who was one of the jurors at the first seven-month trial in 1993. Jose and Kitty were shot dead on August 20, 1989, at their home in Beverly Hills. 21-year-old Lyle and 18-year-old Erik were later arrested for their parents' murders. The dominant narrative in the media was that they were greedy, rich kids who killed their parents in cold blood for money. In this episode Laura goes behind the scenes of the trial with Hazel, who shares why the narrative didn't make sense at the trial and why she didn't believe that Lyle and Erik killed their parents for money. Both brothers went on trial at the same time for murdering their parents, albeit each brother had their own jury. Hazel sat on the jury for Erik Menendez. Each jury deliberated separately, and each jury resulted in a deadlock. Hazel explains what was going on between the 6 men and 6 women on her jury having heard the 51 witnesses who gave evidence about the insidious, cruel, and torturous abuse the boys were subjected to by Jose Menendez. The same judge, Judge Stanley Weisberg presided over the second trial which began in October 1995. This time around Judge Weisberg changed the rules and decided there would be no cameras in court. David Conn, on behalf of the prosecution, asked the judge not to allow the sexual abuse history and so Judge Weisberg limited the witnesses that the defense could call and via a last-minute ruling refused to allow the imperfect self-defense theory. In closing, Conn, told the jury that the ‘abuse is a total fabrication', that they had heard no evidence of the abuse and it was the ‘silliest story ever told in a courtroom.' He said it was the perfect example of the ‘abuse excuse.' The jury found Lyle and Erik guilty of murder and they were sentenced to life without parole. Lyle and Erik have been in prison for 33 years. As the world's richest football league charges its champions with serial rule-breaking, we assess how the case could alter the landscape of English football. What could it mean for the regulation of the game and the growing number of clubs owned by nation states? We hear from the general secretary of the Man City Supporters Club and ask a leading sports lawyer what to expect from a legal fight that could shape the future of the domestic game. City said they were "surprised" by the charges and are supported by a "body of irrefutable evidence". This podcast was updated on 10th February to correct a factual error made by a contributor. How has the 2022 World Cup ended up in Qatar? Few would have guessed in 2010 that this tiny Gulf State would win the chance to stage football's biggest competition. It had seemed an unlikely bidder, and didn't have a single suitable stadium. Then there was the temperature, often around 40 degrees in the summer months: dangerous conditions for playing a football tournament. Fast forward to 2022 and seven new stadiums with huge new infrastructure have been built at vast expense. The opening game is just days away from being played, unusually, in the milder weather of November. It's a story that The Guardian's David Conn has been following since the beginning. He is the author of The Fall of the House of Fifa and one of the world's leading investigative journalists on corruption in football. Conn goes back to the beginning: how was the bid won in the first place? He traces the story from an infamous lunch at the Elysee Palace right up to the present day, investigating the human rights issues raised over the past dozen years, as well as probing at a question that is often left curiously unexamined: what is it that Qatar actually wants out of all this? And what does this tell us about how sport and power work in the modern age? Produced by Ant Adeane from Tonic Productions for BBC Radio 4.

"The image of reinvention, conjuring up some kind of Google-land, can also, while understandably wanting to attract businesses, veer into overstating the case. If this had happened so successfully, this “remarkable economic transformation”; including the outlay of public money to create “sport city”, then hitting the jackpot with Abu Dhabi, why are the areas right around the stadium still mired in England’s worst deprivation?" In Episode Thirty Seven we revisit ‘City and the City’ by David Conn. Looking at the takeover of Manchester City by Sheikh Mansour (and at its previous owner, Thaksin Shinawatra), David places the mega-rich gulf owners' stewardship of the club in the wider economic landscape. What does their ownership of the club mean for the city itself? Why is there still a juxtaposition of investment in sporting facilities in the east of the city while it's still home to some of the most deprived boroughs in the UK? The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
This week we welcome to the programme David Conn of TruthSleuth.net for an in-depth discussion on the so-called Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ and its manipulative founder Jim Jones, under whose "leadership" over nine hundred people were killed in a mass "suicide/murder" on the 18th of November 1978 in northwestern Guyana. David Conn, who investigated Jones for eight years prior to the Jonestown Massacre, shares with us his own story of how he tried to expose and warn people about Jim Jones, and helps us to form some kind of understanding of the charismatic-yet-dangerous Jones and the psychological, spiritual and social factors that allowed such a man to rise to a position of power and influence. David Conn is author of the book The Pleasure of Friends : An Orthodox Study of Evil and the Meaning in the Jonestown Cultic Horror (2013). (For show notes please visit http://themindrenewed.com)

The Blizzard Q&A recorded live at the National Football Museum as part of the Manchester Football Writing Festival, on the evening of 1st September. With a panel of Blizzard contributors - David Conn, Andy Brassell and editor Jonathan Wilson - hosted by the Football Ramble's Marcus Speller. A heavyweight first half features discussion on the key takeaways from this summer's transfer window, the effect of the new Premier League TV deal, a mention for the Chinese stock market and some talk about financial fair play and the corrupt nest of debauchery that is Fifa. In the second half the panel looked at footballers' diva moments, answer a fan's query as to WTF is going on at Man United, ponder the lifespan of a manager and the tactical dunce that is Laurent Blanc. There's also some chat on the role of the full-back, and recollections of difficult/awful interviews, which throws up the unlikely triumvirate of Darius Vassell, Dave Whelan and Colin Kazim Richards. As ever with our live events we do the best we can with the sound quality at our disposal, what with roving mikes, the odd bit of feedback, guaranteed big laughs and on this occasion Jonathan Wilson doing an impression of a raving Louis van Gaal spiking the top of the microphone range. Those minor issues aside, we trust you'll enjoy the podcast.

In place of our scheduled interview with David Conn, who has unfortunately had to postpone due to illness, we take the opportunity to share a fascinating address by David Theroux, Founder and President of the C. S. Lewis Society of California, entitled: "C. S. Lewis on Mere Liberty and the Evils of Statism". Delivered as the keynote talk at the first annual conference of Christians for Liberty, at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, on the 2nd of August 2014, this address explores the extent to which Lewis was critical of the modern State, with its tendency towards scientism and technocratic control, and identifies a nexus of beliefs and values - of which Lewis's Christian theism was the foundation - as the motivation for that critique. As David Theroux puts it: "Throughout his work, Lewis infused an interconnected worldview that championed objective truth, moral ethics, natural law, literary excellence, reason, science, individual liberty, personal responsibility and virtue, and Christian theism. In so doing, he critiqued naturalism, reductionism, nihilism, positivism, scientism, historicism, collectivism, atheism, statism, coercive egalitarianism, militarism, welfarism, and dehumanization and tyranny of all forms." In a world in which Christianity and the State are too often seen as natural allies, we offer this address as arguing that we might call libertarian values are fundamentally consistent with Christian thought. Martin Rogers covers the biggest storylines from the world of football. He grabs quotes from David Conn, Neil Ashton, and Kasey Keller, who all appeared on the October 13 show of WFD, to get their thoughts on the topics he discusses.
Wednesday is here and another terrific show of World Football Daily. The ownership situation at Liverpool has reportedly taken a turn, Tom Henry - the owner of the Boston Red Sox - and a business interest from Asia have had their bids denied by Hicks and Gillette. Steven and Kenny will go into detail behind the financial situation at Liverpool FC and also give their thoughts on the matter. David Conn from the Guardian, who wrote the piece in the Guardian newspaper about Liverpool, will join the show to go into detail about the top story in world football. For more on the financial side of the story, we turn to Misha Sher from Soccerex to discuss how the terms of the sale will go forward. To turn away a bit from the Liverpool story, we go to Matthew Barker to discuss Italian football.
