What happens when a 9-year-old girl witnesses her mother's death—and no one talks about it?This week's guest, Breane, grew up in rural Montana where silence was survival. After watching her epileptic mother die and being told to “move on,” Brianna buried her pain for years. But trauma has a way of demanding to be felt. From oil fields in North Dakota to raising three boys in the mountains, anxiety and emotional numbness shadowed every chapter—until she broke the cycle. Today, Brianna is the founder of Montana Grit, a one-of-a-kind program helping female veterans and first responders heal through raw, backcountry experiences. No Instagram therapy fluff—just real women, in the wild, doing the deep inner work no one talks about. Her mission was born from pain: “I am the product of veterans and first responders who never got help.” Now she's created the thing she wished existed—off-grid resilience and recovery for those who serve, and too often suffer in silence. To help support Breane's non-profit visit: @Montana_grit_outdoors —Support the showFollow Wild Chaos on Social Media: Apple iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-wild-chaos-podcast/id1732761860Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5KFGZ6uABb1sQlfkE2TIoc?si=8ff748aa4fc64331 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wildchaospodcastBam's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bambam0069Youtube: https://youtube.com/@wildchaospodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@wildchaosshowMeta (Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/wildchaospodcast

Meredith Lindvall earned a BS in Environmental Science and a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health both from Emory University. She has a passion for the relationship between people's health and their environments that has led to a commitment to careers in the environment. An Atlanta native, she has worked in the health research, environmental and sustainability departments at Emory Pediatric Pulmonology, Delta Air Lines, The Home Depot and Cox Enterprises where she currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of Waste, Water, Nature & Biodiversity. Meredith joined Cox in 2011 and led Cox's recent industry leading achievement of Zero Waste to Landfill by 2024. She currently serves on the board of LiveThrive Atlanta, who operates the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials, and as Secretary of the Board of the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation. Meredith Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Steps to achieving 90% waste diversion rate Employee engagement strategies and initiatives, including translating zero waste to KPIs  Cost benefits of moving to zero waste Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Meredith's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? My advice is to meet people where they are. The reason that's important is because you are trying to gain buy-in. If you can put yourselves in their shoes, figure out why they should care, you can translate sustainability to a really wide range of audiences. Think about, when you're not talking to sustainability professionals, how can you translate what your mission is into a way that this person can be passionate about it? Whether that is a time savings, whether that's that they like to go out on the weekends with their grandkids and learn about the environment, they want to deliver financial savings, they want to have a different relationship with their supplier. I would encourage you to carve out time to think about your audience and meet them where they're at and then bring them on that journey with you. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am excited that the sustainability world is really rapidly expanding past carbon to add things like biodiversity and nature that really, for me, connect our why back to nature and ecosystems and the planet. You heard me say up top that that's really where my passion has been. We're really interconnected, the environment, humans and the planet and species. I'm excited to see biodiversity goals and some of these other things that are really more closely connecting the dots between climate change, species, habitat, and traditional environmental work that, in my opinion, has been a little bit siloed. I'm excited about those coming together. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability leaders read? I'm guessing everyone's read Green to Gold, so for a more current one, I would say Drawdown, which builds on Paul Hawkins' work in the ecology of commerce and really breaks it into truly actionable steps that we as a society can take to combat climate change in the next 50 years. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Knowing that your audience are experts in this field, some I'm sure they've been to themselves, but I would say GreenBiz, which is now Trellis, Sustainable Brands, Environment+Energy Leader, in-house tools. Big helpful things for us have been to gamify the actions that we want employees to take. Whether that is an in-house tool or an off the shelf tool, I would just encourage people to look at what can you do to amplify your work given that sustainability teams are often very small. One that I did want to throw out there that folks might not be as familiar with, but again where my passions intersect, is the National Association of Environmental Managers, which really, from my perspective is connecting the environmental health and safety and sustainability work together. As sustainability becomes more regulated and compliance based, I really see a lot of synergy there in that association. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Cox? Listeners can go to coxenterprises.com and look under the Our Impact tab and there you can see our impact report. You'll see a call out on all of our sustainability work where you'll be able to check out the zero waste to landfill achievement, our water work, our carbon work, and then you'll also be able to look at our social impact impact work there as well for 34 by 34. Fantasy/Animation welcomes back special guest Professor Terry Lindvall to the podcast to continue the discussion of C.S. Lewis, this time with a focus on Lewis' own work on fairy stories and the value the writer places on the importance of the ‘unexpected' in fairytales as a mode of narration. Topics include Lewis' professional history and views on the crafting of child curiosity within the literary imagination; how Lewis' own students were directed to bring back enchantment via side stories and personal images of haunting; Lewis' use of female characters, storytelling, and questions of empowerment; distinctions in worldbuilding and world creation between Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien; and the qualities that make Lewis such a seminal writer of popular fantasy. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Episode 147 of the podcast is the first in a two-part special focusing on C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia book series originally published between 1950 and 1956, where Chris and Alex look at a handful of screen adaptations that traverse the fantasy and animation intersection. For this first instalment, they compare the 1979 animated film The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe directed by Bill Melendez with the BBC serial of the same name from 1988, both of which adapted Lewis' first and perhaps best known Narnia novel. Joining them is special guest Terry Lindvall, who is the C.S. Lewis Endowed Chair in Communication and Christian Thought and Professor of Communication at Virginia Wesleyan College. He is a C.S. Lewis scholar and expert in American film and media, seeking to see how theological thought, Christian faith and tradition, and cinema can intersect. His recent book crosses squarely into animation, titled Animated Parables: A Pedagogy of Seven Deadly Sins and a Few Virtues (2022), and examines how short animated films teach us, directly and indirectly, about vice and virtue, connecting together a range of global cartoons to explore the animators' role in displaying the seven deadly sins. Listen as they discuss distinctions between the marvellous and the uncanny, and how fantasy shaped Lewis' life and works; his relationship with J.R.R. Tolkien and the influence of Christianity on his brand of fantasy; traditions of limited animation and the medium's potential status as one of ‘supposal'; shifting representations of the eponymous White Witch as both feared and fearful; and what Narnia has to say about the importance of letting children think. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Artificial intelligence (AI) is dominating headlines and dinner table conversations, and many of us are interested in understanding the impacts it may have on our lives and our practices. Emerging research points to the many ways we can expect AI to play in healthcare in the coming months and years, and it would be a good idea for healthcare providers to take heed. This roundtable discussion features three experts: Tina Kaczor, ND, FABNO, who is a medical editor and naturopathic oncologist; Marina Sirota, PhD, who is a researcher and biomedical informatics expert and associate professor with University of California, San Francisco (UCSF); and Charlotta Lindvall, MD, PhD, who is a researcher, assistant professor at Harvard, and the Director of Clinical Informatics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They discuss current research on AI in healthcare, and explore the concerns that need to be addressed before employing AI fully in the healthcare system. About the Experts Tina Kaczor, ND, FABNO, is editor in-chief of Natural Medicine Journal and the creator of Round Table Cancer Care. Kaczor is a naturopathic physician board certified in naturopathic oncology. She received her naturopathic doctorate from the National University of Natural Medicine and completed her residency at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. She is also the editor of the Textbook of Naturopathic Oncology and cofounder of The Cancer Pod, a podcast for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and everyone in between. Marina Sirota, PhD, is an associate professor and the acting director at the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute at UCSF. Prior to that, she worked as a senior research scientist at Pfizer, where she focused on developing precision medicine strategies in drug discovery. She completed her PhD in biomedical informatics at Stanford University. Sirota's research experience in translational bioinformatics spans nearly 20 years, during which she has coauthored over 170 scientific publications. Her research interests lie in developing computational integrative methods and applying these approaches in the context of disease diagnostics and therapeutics with a special focus on women's health. The Sirota laboratory is funded by the National Institute on Aging, the National Library of Medicine, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Pfizer, March of Dimes, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Dr Sirota also is the director of the AI4ALL program at UCSF, with the goal of introducing high school girls to applications of AI and machine learning in biomedicine, and she leads the outreach and advocacy efforts at the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute. Charlotta Lindvall, MD, PhD, is a practicing palliative care physician, assistant professor, and director of Clinical Informatics at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She leads a cross-disciplinary research team of physicians, nurses, and computer scientists to develop AI to extract patient-centered outcomes from clinical narratives and conversations. ClinicalRegex, a software developed by her lab, is used to identify text-based primary outcomes in multiple clinical trials involving tens of thousands of patients in the United States. She leads the Clinical Informatics AI strategy at Dana-Farber and is a technical expert on AI for the National Quality Forum. Dr Lindvall has received multiple awards and prizes, including a NPCRC Junior Investigator Award, a Sojourns Scholar Award, and an Innovation Award from the National Quality Forum. Funding for her research includes grants from the Cambia Health Foundation, the Veteran Affairs, and the National Institutes of Health.

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Terry Lindvall, the C.S. Lewis Chair of Communication and Christian Thought at Virginia Wesleyan University. Terry talks about his seminary background, looking at religion and popular culture, and we find out about Terry's academic history and his work in history, theology and communications. We discuss how both of us have been influenced by H. Richard Niebuhr's seminal work on Christ and Culture, as well as the role of censorship and why, as Terry attests, the church should be using movies as they employ parables. He talks about the importance of showing film clips to his students, e.g. Pixar films, in terms of disclosing the divine. We also talk about Roger Ebert's learned film reviewing. Terry discusses how he looks at the role of prayer in film in relation, for example, to the films of Robert Benton, and the spiritual journeys that other filmmakers are on. Terry also reflects on how agents tend to stop people like us from getting through to filmmakers. Terry was born in Basel, Switzerland, and his father studied under Karl Barth. There are Swedish antecedents, too, and the young Terry would visit that side of the family at Christmas. We talk about historicity vs. fantasy in relation to Tim Burton's Big Fish and we consider how the past is sometimes wilder in actuality than it was in our imagination. Terry talks about how he writes his books for his students, that his father was an Assembly of God chaplain in the military, back in the days when movies were frowned upon, and we find out how Terry got into films and especially international animation. His most recent book is on animated parables. We find out why animation and comedies are especially key for Terry. He has taught church history, also, especially with respect to helping Terry understand about laughter and satire. Terry talks about why the worst moments of our lives can also be our best and why we need to go through crisis in order to appreciate the gifts that life can bring. We learn about how he was given a C.S. Lewis endowed Chair, about the value of comedy including in the context of funerals and about the relevance of our personal stories in the way we address people. Then, at the end of the interview, we discover why Terry thinks it is important to focus on the present.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has tremendous potential.  We talk on this podcast about potential uses of AI in geriatrics and palliative care with natural language processing guru Charlotta Lindvall from DFCI, bioethicists and internist Matt DeCamp from University of Colorado, and prognosis wizard Sei Lee from UCSF. Social companions to address the epidemic of loneliness among older adults Augmenting ability of clinicians by taking notes Searching the electronic health record for data Predicting mortality and other outcomes We talk also about the pitfalls of AI, including: Recapitulation bias by race and ethnicity, and other factors, exacerbating disparities Confidentiality concerns: do those social companions also monitor older adults for falls? 24/7?   Hallucinations, or when the AI lies or bullshits, then denies it When the AI approaches sentience, is it ethical to unplug it? I'm sure this is a subject we will return to, given the rapid progress on AI.
