Tom Petersen  After a brief and ill-fated start as a daily newspaper reporter, Tom C. Petersen spent decades in the corporate world as a utility communications professional. He started out writing news releases and employee newsletters before transitioning to writing strategic business objec- tives and annual performance reviews. He ultimately was primarily responsible for attending meetings and deleting emails. He left the corporate world in 2023 to focus on writing about the intersection of faith and work, and mostly how poorly he had navigated it over the years. He is intrigued by the challenge of living out our faith with integrity in a workplace that usually doesn't play by those rules. He finds the conflict between the two downright funny. He hopes his struggles serve to encourage others who try to navigate the same path. He's been gratified to have his musings reprinted in outlets like CBN.com, The High Calling site of the Theology of Work Project, and, most recently, WorkLight. He is the author of a new book of humorous essays of how badly he struggles in this area: Thank God It's Monday(?): Balancing Work and Faith While Keeping Your Sense of Humor. Tom is a husband, father, and native Midwesterner with two master's degrees (one of which is still accredited).

The Word Before Work
Biggie Smalls & the Apostle Paul on how to not slip into idleness

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Mere Christians in the BibleDevotional: 4 of 5In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. (2 Thessalonians 3:6)We're in a series exploring wisdom for our work from some “Mere Christians of the Bible”—believers who did not work as pastors or donor-supported missionaries, but as shepherds, winemakers, and more. That would have described most of the believers at the Church of Thessalonica, whom Paul rebuked for idleness in 1 Thessalonians 4 and 2 Thessalonians 3.Why were these mere Christians idle? The Theology of Work Project suggests they fell for “a common, but false” idea that “Christ's coming into the world has radically diminished the value of everyday labor,” and that some believers were “using some aspect of Christ's teaching—whether it was his second coming, or his commission to evangelize the world—to justify their idleness.”But Paul rejected this outright. As he made clear in nearly all his epistles, mere Christians keep watch for Christ's return not by sitting on our hands but by working with them.If you're reading The Word Before Work, you likely don't need to be told to work hard. But even the hardest working can slowly slide into subtle slothfulness. How can you and I avoid this? Here are three ideas.#1: “Tape the audience.” The rapper Biggie Smalls once gave some surprising direction to his videographer. Instead of filming him, Biggie said, “Every time a song drops, tape the audience. I wanna see their reaction.” Because Biggie was committed to working hard in service of his customers. Avoid idleness by metaphorically “taping the audience” of your work by regularly asking your boss or customers for critical feedback, shadowing end users to see where your product creates friction, or tracking the customer engagement metric you've been avoiding for fear of what it might say.#2: Audit where you're busy but not productive. Review tasks you completed 30-60 days ago and ask, “Did this move the needle?” With some distance, you'll spot where you're frantic with activity that's leading to nowhere.#3: Make a grand gesture to break bad habits that tempt you to idleness. Last year, I struggled with apps that tempted me toward subtle slothfulness. After setting and failing to keep “screen time limits,” I made a grand gesture and spent $50 on this device that solved my problem overnight.Whatever works for you works. But do whatever you must to avoid the slow slide to subtle slothfulness. Strive, as Paul did, to “strenuously contend with all the energy” you have—for the glory of God and the good of others (Colossians 1:29).

Compounding the problem is that Christians cannot agree among themselves on how to respond to an increasingly “post-Christian " culture. Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Wisdom for Work from ProverbsDevotional: 7 of 7She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. (Proverbs 31:19-20)The woman of Proverbs 31 described in today's passage teaches us an important lesson about work and generosity—namely, that the two can be inextricably linked. As my friends at The Theology of Work Project explain:Because she is successful in spinning, she has something to give to the poor, and conversely, her generous spirit is an essential element of her capability as an entrepreneur/executive. In other words, Proverbs claims that generosity and fiduciary duty do not conflict. Being generous to the needy out of the household's resources does not reduce the owner's wealth, but increases it.Because God will always, always reward the kindness we show to the poor (see Proverbs 19:17). Sometimes in this life and sometimes in the life to come.Jesus said this most famously in the Sermon on the Mount: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy…But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy” (Matthew 6:19-20).“Christ's primary argument against amassing material wealth isn't that it's morally wrong but simply that it's a poor investment,” says Dr. Randy Alcorn. “Jesus doesn't say to do it because it's right but because it's smart. Because such treasures will last, Jesus argues from the bottom line. It's not an emotional appeal; it's a logical one.”Amen. So, how can you and I invest in what lasts by being kind to the poor through our work today?#1: Respectfully question any practices that might be disadvantaging the poor. Last year I followed the “best practices” of my industry by giving people a 20% discount if they paid for my retreat upfront instead of spreading payments out over three months. Who did that disadvantage? The very people who most needed the financial break! Thankfully, God revealed this error in my ways and gave me a chance to repent. Take a second right now to ask God which practices within your organization might be harming the poor.#2: Advocate for a benevolence fund at your company to help employees in times of crisis, such as unexpected medical expenses, housing issues, or natural disasters.#3: Volunteer your professional skills to a non-profit that supports the poor.Again, don't take actions like these just because they are the right response to the gospel. Take them because they're wise. Proverbs 19:17 says that “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Take God at his word and make the wise investment to be generous to the poor today!

In this weeks episode of Heads Together, I had the pleasure of speaking with Melina Cordero, a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. Melina shared insights from her journey in commercial real estate and her transition to focusing on DEI and leadership development. Our conversation then turned to Melina's project, the Women on Work Project. This initiative emerged from her realisation of the structural obstacles faced by women in the workplace, especially during the pandemic. Melina's goal was to gather diverse experiences of women across different sectors, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and caregiving roles to paint a comprehensive picture of the challenges and opportunities for women at work. Melina highlighted the importance of awareness and education in addressing these issues within organisations. By recognising and acknowledging the invisible labor performed by women, leaders can create more equitable workplaces where all contributions are valued and rewarded. Additionally, Melina emphasised the need for specific training on topics like gender bias in communication to foster a culture of inclusion and respect. This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. According to the 13th annual Aflac Workforces Report, 57 percent of American workers say they are currently experiencing moderate levels of burnout. Human Work Project is working to address that. Founder Charlie Warner joins us with more. Charlie Warner: Our mission at Human Work is to humanize the nature of work. We believe that work is a natural and an essential part of our humanity, but that our current culture of work no longer supports our prosperity. Due to this, we are seeing large–scale burnout and career mis-alignment. Our job at Human Work Project is to fix that. We do so by supporting people in realigning and recalibrating their relationship with work through professional development programs, mentoring, and community support. This includes our new GroundWork program, a 12–week intensive program designed to help you align to work that works for you. We also host regular events and workshops for leaders, individuals and organizations interested in exploring human–work alignment. For more information, visit our website, humanworkproject.com. In 2014, he founded The New Men's Work Project, which has attracted men from around the world looking to develop as leaders in their relationships and communities. The Project is committed to the staggering goal of creating 1000 men's groups worldwide in the next ten years. John's embodiment-driven teaching draws from not only over 30 years experience of his own Buddhist meditative practice, but from 13 years of intensive study and practice in Yogic Intimacy. Drawing from the deep lineages of Vajrayana, Tantra, Kundalini yoga, Taoist and Iron Shirt Qigong traditions, John seeks to create a profound experience for men and women longing to express their deepest desires with open, fierce and loving hearts. He has also studies extensively with the likes of teachers such as David Deida, author of "The Way of a Superior Man." In this episode, we dive into the realms of life purpose, relational communication, sexual intimacy, conscious warriorhood, fatherhood, and embodiment. ___________________ PODCAST CHAPTERS 00:00:00 - John Wineland Intro 00:02:38 - Seeking Awakening and Embodiment 00:05:11 - Fluidity and Integration of Masculine and Feminine Energies 00:07:37 - Gender Identity and Authenticity 00:09:57 - The Five Different Bodies 00:12:28 - Cultivating Your Natural Skills and Abilities 00:17:29 - Trusting the Impulse of Your Heart 00:20:22 - The Birth of a Men's Group 00:22:42 - Healing through Men's Work 00:25:12 - Healing through Self-Mastery 00:30:11 - The Full Expression of the Feminine 00:35:08 - Changing the Relational and Family Karma 00:37:40 - The Power of Se*ual Energy 00:40:17 - Yogic Practice and Tantra 00:42:51 - Changing the Lineage 00:45:14 - Initiations and Growth for the Masculine 00:47:53 - The Masculine and Feminine Practices 00:50:38 - The Ultimate Feminine Gift 00:55:39 - The Father's Influence on Masculinity 00:58:23 - Making Friends with Death 01:03:33 - Time Capsule Question ___________________ Guest: John Wineland ✦ Website | https://www.johnwineland.com/ ✦ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/john_wineland/ ✦ YouTube |  @JohnWineland  ✦ New Book: From the Core | https://www.johnwineland.com/book-from-the-core ✦ The Virtual Workshop | https://www.johnwineland.com/streaming ✦ Daughter, Claire Wineland |  @clairewineland  ✦ What Men Want | https://youtu.be/mMXCeFhExrQ?si=5WW07xeBYLiZ31up THE EMBODIED MEN'S LEADERSHIP TRAINING 2024

Episode Topic: Introducing the Ethics at Work PodcastIn this episode, we introduce our new project, a podcast! We share the story of how each of us came to ask how our relationship with work should look, and what it means to live an excellent working life. Walter and Megan are engineers who think deeply about how technology can and should be used to build better habits and connect with others around us. Since Paul is a philosopher, we aren't scared to dig deep into the philosophies that shape our assumptions. We tell you how we met over breakfast on campus in the middle of the pandemic. We were all at different transition points in our careers, Walter had just received tenure, Paul was starting a job as a faculty member, and Megan was finishing her Ph.D. We realized we were approaching similar questions about work and technology from our different points of view. We talk about our research into work, technology, and ethics and how this led us to create a series of courses, a public database of resources, and a YouTube channel that we call the Ethics at Work Project.Featured Speakers: Paul Blaschko, Ph.D., assistant teaching professor at the University of Notre DameMegan Levis, Ph.D., assistant professor of the practice with Notre Dame's Center for Social Concerns and with the College of EngineeringWalter Scheirer, Ph.D., the Dennis O. Recently I read an article about the "Little Houses on the Prairie." Perhaps you, too, have read about the 1,400 people who came to a small Native American reservation here in South Dakota, to build thirty homes in five days. This happened in mid-July of last year and at that time, on those prairies, the wind was warm. These volunteer workers for Habitat for Humanity came from all walks of life. At one time, there were three PhDs on the roof of a house nailing on shingles. To build thirty homes in one week became a most ambitious project. It became known as "Jimmy Carter's Work Project." It was named after Habitat's best known volunteer. Alongside was former First Lady Rosalynn Carter working with her husband. There they were for the week, dressed for the work project. The people called the former president, "Wawikia Lakota - for one who cares about people." You perhaps have heard about many completed projects by Habitat for Humanity. If you have a hammer and want to find out about more, call 1-800-Habitat. This article that I read about building new houses on the prairie was of great interest to me. Over a fortnight in December of last year, I volunteered to clean houses and apartments in an area in Ohio. It became a real mission of love when I saw the completed projects before returning to my own little home on the prairie and enjoying that cup of Christmas tea. At one time in the past, the streets in that area now had many a home-sweet-home, where the smells of baking bread and the sounds of music and lullabies and laughter were a daily activity. These houses have character and beautiful architecture and the houses and the people had something in common - caring for their families and celebrating family togetherness. After reading the article on those new houses on the prairie and reflecting on my experiences in that area at Christmas time, I had many warm thoughts. Whether it is houses on the prairie, or apartments in a city, they do have something in common - homes where there can be the warmth of love and real caring and compassion. May the Spirit of Christmas forever be in their hearts and homes. Warm Thoughts: Amid pleasure and palaces, be it ever so humble, there is no place like home. Stephen Foster. May you have many warm thoughts on home. Is there anything better than having an old friend on your podcast? John is a brilliant and passionate mind in the realm of masculine wellness, and we cover a ton of ground here. What "integration" actually means, John's new book, why disconnect and fear can be so damaging, the temptation to just layer new knowledge on top of old patterns. This is a big one, so listen in. Known for his groundbreaking work with men, John travels world-wide teaching his vision of embodied men's work and deep relational practice.  In 2014, he founded The New Men's Work Project, which has attracted men from around the world looking to develop as leaders in their relationships and communities. The Project is committed to the staggering goal of creating 1000 men's groups worldwide in the next ten years and has already supported trainings and groups throughout Europe and the U.S.  John's clients include entrepreneurs, leading thinkers in the world of personal development and entertainment, Ted speakers and creative leaders in Hollywood. John brings a multi-faceted approach, which is both energetic and highly practical, to his workshops and experiential coaching sessions. John's embodiment-driven teaching draws from not only over 30 years experience of his own Buddhist meditative practice, but from 13 years intensive study and practice with renowned Yogic Intimacy teacher, David Deida.  Drawing from Deida's revolutionary framework, as well as the deep lineages of Vajrayana, Tantra, Kundalini yoga, Taoist and Iron Shirt Qigong traditions, John seeks to create a profound experience for men and women longing to express their deepest desires with open, fierce and loving hearts.  John's work has been featured on multiple podcast and publications; including Zen Habits, The Elephant Journal, Sex with Emily, Man Talks, The Good Men Project and Love TV.  John's first book, The Art of Masculine Leadership, will be available June 2022.  He will also be traveling throughout Europe and the U.S. leading workshops on embodied men's work, spiritual intimacy and sexual practice. Guests: Tracy Matthews Ministry/Business: Attune   We are all bound to face uncertainty in our work. The truth is, we don't know what tomorrow holds, but we do know the one who holds tomorrow. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus admonishes us to “seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Jesus was not just referring to food and clothing but also the resources we need for our work. God wants us to turn to Him and inquire about our work. Tracy Mathews and her organization Attune are all about helping teams do just that.  Tracy worked for a biotech start-up as a consultant and an engineer. She is the spark behind Attune; a ministry birthed out of the desire to help people live out their faith at work by intentionally seeking and listening for God's guidance on practical everyday work challenges and goals. The process involves three main steps: Listen, Discern, and Go. Organizations and leaders turn to Attune to address various work circumstances, such as launching into new territory, working through tough challenges, or embarking on a significant project. Attunement sessions facilitate hearing from the Holy Spirit and provide the added benefit of leadership development to create a stronger, healthier culture. Attune seeks to help individuals and teams cultivate their ability to tune into God's guidance through practice. Resources from today's show: Tracy is offering our listeners access to Wisdom from Above, a 5-day devotional on spiritual attunement, developed in partnership with Fuller's DePree Center for Leadership, the Theology of Work Project and Attune. Lauren Craig (She/her/hers) is a social-media shy, internet-curious cultural futurist based in London. Her practice draws on her experiences as an artist, curator, researcher, birth/death doula and celebrant. She has founded and directed five creative organisations with a background in ethical, social and environmental entrepreneurship and reproductive justice. Her practice moves with slow depth between performance, installation, art writing, moving image and photography. Through archival socialisation, she elevates lived experience as a tool for reframing past and present underexposed narratives. Through collaborative live engagement Craig invites us to presence conditions for ethical cultural memory.Craig's current project Rendering Experience takes a revisionist approach to Maud Sulter's book Passion: Discourses on Blackwomen's Creativity (1990), investigating the art historical legacy, impact and potential curatorial futures inspired by this formative yet overlooked text. Passion has featured in previously co-curated exhibitions The Rita Keegan Archive (Project) (RKAP) at South London Gallery, (2020) Show and Tell, The Women's art Library (2015). Forthcoming works, publications and events include collaborations with Feminist Review, Photofusion, Eastside Projects, The Womens' Art Library and Arts Catalyst. She is a member of RKAP, a social history and curatorial collective whose activities include the publication Mirror Reflecting Darkly, MIT Press and Goldsmiths May 2021 and exhibition Between There and Here at South London Gallery in September 2021 and.She has an MA in Enterprise and Management for Creative Arts from the University of the Arts London. How do we invite God into our everyday work lives? We spend most of our time not at church or in a quiet place, but at work! How do we find God there? In a new book, Working in the Presence of God: Spiritual Practices for Everyday Work (Hendrickson Publishers in partnership with the Theology of Work Project, 2019), co-authors Denise Daniels and Shannon Vandewarker help us to create practices within our work-a-day lives to see where God is already present in our work environment. If we want to be transformed into Christ's likeness, the great place for that to happen is where we spend so much of our time and energy: Our work.  Today on the Reintegrate Podcast we have one of the authors of this book.
