This week we focus our attention on two fundamental box-sets and a slew of live recordings the synchronicity of whose releases or reissues draws the spotlight on musicians that were at the center of the legendary Loft Scene (from Julius Hemphill to Sam Rivers, Michael Gregory Jackson and JuJU), as well as on some of those musicians that have been keeping the loft scene's spirit alive (William Parker, Tim Berne and the Italian-Danish band like On Dog). The latest albums by Charles Lloyd and the Marvels and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb provide the perfect way to open the proceedings. Adam is off celebrating the birth of his second child, so you're stuck with Jason and Ben for this episode. There has been so much soccer in these past six days that the US Open Cup match against Christos FC feels like years ago, and not just a week. We talk about that game, about the class that Lloyd Sam and Ian Harkes brought when they subbed on, and how Julian Buescher's game looked great on paper, but was different in real life. We also have to talk about United 2-0 loss to Toronto FC, and how Steve Birnbaum had a bad game on both sides of the ball. We talk about this result in the context of the team's season so far, and what performances can be salvaged out of a loss like this. Finally, we have to talk about the rumors swirling around Alhaji Kamara and Jose Ortiz; and that's just the first segment! In the second segment we talk about the upcoming game against Atlanta United, and how this team is a very bad matchup for United right now. Their defense can be had, especially with Carlos Carmona out, but United will also have to deal with the fact that Josef Martinez is back. We discuss who each team might rotate in and rotate out, before wondering overall if United can stay close enough in the East to allow midyear signings to help. In the third segment we welcome back Eugene Rupinski of Brotherly Game to talk about the weekend match against the Philadelphia Union. We ask hom about their center backs and their midfield, some United alums in Charlie Davies and Chris Pontius, and some midseason changes Eugene would want to see. Finally, we end with the poor home records of both teams and how Ben Olsen should gameplan against the Union. Give it a listen!
The Filibuster crew is back to talk about all things soccer. Jason, Adam, and Ben kick off the show talking about the MLS Cup Final this weekend, and we break down how Toronto FC got here after talking Seattle last week. We discuss each team's defense, which will be facing imposing offenses, and we talk about who will be the difference maker for each team. We then get into talking about the re-signing of Steve Birnbaum, which evolves into a larger discussion about what we want to see done with targeted allocation money. In the second segment, we get into cake or death: We talk Kofi Opare, Jalen Robinson, Chris Rolfe, Alvaro Saborio, and Lloyd Sam and ask which of them we want back next year. And finally, we answer your questions! We talk about boats, D.C. United's tactics, the expansion draft and Atlanta United's signings, and Bill Hamid. Give it a listen!
It was yet another busy day for the New York Red Bulls organization. The MLS side got some wonderful help from former member Lloyd Sam and the worst team ever, D.C. United, who beat out New York City FC, handing first in the East to the Red Bulls. Of course, that alone wouldn’t be enough. The Red Bulls took care of their own business (barely) when they took Columbus Crew SC from the playoff picture with a nail biting 3-2 win. The USL side faced off against Louisville City FC in the Eastern Conference Final of the USL Playoffs. In the previous round of the playoffs, the Rochester Rhinos took the Red Bulls to Extra Time and Penalty Kicks. Surely the Baby Bulls could avoid it for a second straight time right? Well, no, but at least they had Ryan Meara to stop two penalty kicks to secure their birth in the USL Cup Finals. Musical Credits: Opening: Happy Rock - http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music Breaks & Closing: True Believers by Bouncing Souls
The whole crew is back together again, as Jason, Adam, and Ben are all here to talk about D.C. United's 2-1 victory over Toronto FC, their third win in seven days! We talk about the luxurious amount of wing depth that D.C. United has right now, and how there was less rotation than we thought there would be in this game. We talk specifically about Luke Mishu and his resurgence in this game, and then zoom out to talk about Ben Olsen's coaching performance writ large. Finally, we talk about how underrated Lloyd Sam has been since coming to D.C. United, and spend some time dismissing Toronto's complaints about the refereeing. In the second segment, we talk about the playoff run-in in the Eastern Conference, with four and a half teams competing for three spots in the playoffs. Columbus Crew SC are basically out, and the New England Revolution don't control their own destiny, so we talk about the three teams who are battling desperately for fourth: the Montreal Impact, D.C. United, and the Philadelphia Union. We break down the last two games of each of those teams, take a moment to discuss what happened with Orlando City SC and whether or not they can play spoiler for any of the playoff teams now that they are eliminated, and estimate that United has a pretty good chance to make the playoffs at this point. Give it a listen!
It is our 200th episode! Jason, Ben, and Adam are here to bring you the 200th installment of Filibuster by talking about D.C. United's miraculous 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls. We talk about the comeback and the wing play of Lloyd Sam, Patrick Nyarko, and Lamar Neagle, before breaking down how the central midfield did without Luciano Acosta and raving about how much of a weapon Steve Birnbaum has become on set pieces. After the break, we talk about D.C. United's upcoming game against the Chicago Fire. We ask what's been going on with them since we last met, and how they will have David Accam back after his flirtation with going to France. Finally, we break down the three ways they attack and point you back to our previous episode on the Fire if you want to hear us gameplan them. Finally, we bust open a 200th episode Twitterbox! We answer questions about how long Luciano Acosta will be around, our recommendations on where to sit if you come up to RFK for a game. We compare Jalen Robinson and Kofi Opare, and talk about some D.C. United legends that are on the same level as Andrea Mancini. We give odds on whether or not FC Dallas will win the treble, answer whether or not there is something wrong with Bill Hamid, talk about the upcoming expansion draft, and estimate how many points D.C. United will need to be above the red line at the end of the season. Give it a listen!
A win on the road? Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? It may have been because of a fluky goal, but a win is a win, and the New York Red Bulls officially have their second road win of the year. Now it’s time to get back home and hate on a struggling D.C. United and returning Lloyd Sam. Sacha Kljestan had a great time on vacation with the United States Men’s Team during World Cup Qualifiers. Sky Blue FC unfortunately missed the playoffs after a rough four day stretch. Oh, there’s also this whole thing with Landon Donovan pulling a Michael Jordan and going back on his retirement. Surprise surprise, he’s of course going back to the LA Galaxy. Megan Rapinoe is also making news, joining the list of players protesting by not standing during the national anthem. Also, remember, the 200th episode of Red Bull Rant will be a live special. 8 pm on September 15th. Musical Credits: Opening: Happy Rock - http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music Breaks & Closing: True Believers by Bouncing Souls
Filibuster is back and still has plenty of games to talk about. Jason, Adam, and Ryan talk about D.C. United 6-2 dismantling of the Chicago Fire, and have to talk about Patrick Mullins and Luciano Acosta. We talk about what else there was to like about the win as well, even if it was against a 10-man last place team. Finally, we talk about Steve Birnbau, Lloyd Sam, and D.C. United's set piece resurgence. We have to talk about the USMNT's game against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday, as the USA continues their march towards the Hex. We talk about the chances of Steve Birnbaum starting in this game and remain puzzled by Jurgen Klinsmann's roster selection. Finally, we move onto D.C. United's Thursday night game against NYCFC. We talk about how they will deal without Ronald Mataritta and how that will affect how they build from the back. We also ask whether or not D.C. United should take this attacking mindset on the road, and how they should gameplan for NYCFC. Give it a listen!
The Filibuster podcast is back and Ben is off of the injured reserve. He joins Adam and Jason to talk about D.C. United versus Columbus Crew SC, including what we made of the clash of styles. We talk about D.C. United's high press, the red card to Harrison Afful and whether or not Marcelo Sarvas will be suspended, and the debut of Lloyd Sam. We end by talking about just how much D.C. United really needs a striker. We bring on Kristin Knowles from The Vocal Minority to help us preview D.C. United versus Toronto FC. We talk about the funk that Sebastian Giovinco is in, and what it feels like for TFC to have a good defense. We have to ask about their loss to 9 man San Jose, and the youngsters that Toronto has had to play these past few weeks. Jason has to ask about Maryland product Tsubasa Endoh, before Ben asks about Jozy Altidore sneaking back onto the bench. We try to offer Tally Hall to TFC (and everything breaks down), before talking about the new BMO Field and how to gameplan the Reds. Give it a listen!
Listen here to this week's The MLS Show podcast as the boys discuss Nigel De Jong, Lloyd Sam being traded to DC United, Orlando City's sacking of Adrian Heath and whether Jurgen Klinsmann would be a good fit for England.

Adrian Heath is out in Orlando as questions abound for fans in Florida. Ben “The Research” Baer fills in for Andrew out on vacation to help David and Matt figure what is next for OCSC. The guys also look forward to a packed weekend with 5 national TV matches. A double header on Friday night gets the juices flowing but the headline match might be SKC hosting the an eastern conference leading NYCFC squad who are serving up some piping hot crow for Doyle. In the second segment the guys discuss Vancouver’s new vacancy at center forward after the sale of Octavio Rivero. Then Sigi Schmid calls in from Seattle to talk coaching tree, the future of coaching in the US, his nemesis/friend Bruce Arena, and their matchup this Saturday at 3pm ET on ESPN. In the mailbag the guys discuss striker additions for FC Dallas, the Lloyd Sam trade to DCU, and theme songs.
It's dark times in the land of the New York Red Bulls. They suffered a bad end to a four game round trip. Lloyd Sam (aka "Llyod") is no longer with the team as he's been traded to D.C. United for allocation money. Things don't look any brighter as the Red Bulls have 3 games in an 8 day stretch coming up, and the stretch of Eastern Conference opponents is here. With a win in this year's Atlantic Cup already notched, the Filibuster crew is here to talk about it. Adam, Ben, and Jason are here to talk about whether D.C. United's game against the New York Red Bulls was the most complete performance of the year. We talk about the contrasting styles of the Red Bulls' tactics versus D.C. United's tactics, the out of character game by referee Silviu Petrescu, and we compare the difference between this year's central midfield (Marcelo Sarvas and Nick DeLeon) versus last year's central midfield (Davy Arnaud and Perry Kitchen). Finally, we talk about whether Fabian Espindola should replace Alvaro Saborio, and thank Jesse Marsch for leaving Lloyd Sam on the bench. We then welcome on Eugene Rupinski from Brotherly Game to talk about United's Friday matchup against the Philadelphia Union. We have to start by asking about Chris Pontius, before marvelling that the Union are good so far this year. We ask Eugene what the biggest thing is that is working for the team right, and ask him to shed some light on their defensive rookies, Keegan Rosenberry and Josh Yaro. We address the Union's central midfield, the selection of players Earnie Stewart has created, and how Bethlehem Steel is working. And, before we say goodbye to Eugene and ask him to gameplan the Union, we had to ask him about Zlatan. Give it a listen!
It's all MLS Cup Playoffs, presented by AT&T, all the time on ETR. First, the guys run the rule over #NYvNE. Who is more likely to fall off, Bradley Wright-Phillips or Lee Nguyen? Will New England sit back? If they do, can New York punish them and keep Thierry Henry off the field for the second leg? Red Bulls winger Lloyd Sam joins the guys to discuss. In the second segment, the Galaxy's Omar Gonzalez helps the guys preview a clash between the top two regular-season teams in MLS in LA and Seattle. Who's firepower will come through when it matters? Will the Sounders keep it conservative? What happens if Ozzie Alonso is out? In the mailbag, the USMNT's struggles are examined and the guys' Dispersal Draft prediction record is, of course, dismal.
