Deborah Howard, founder of the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS)–self-described as “the only national nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals from cruelty in pet shops and puppy/kitten mills”—recalls how, in 1989, her disgust upon visiting an Atlanta pet store, and her ensuing examination of the deplorable conditions, led to launching CAPS. Howard recounts […] The post Deborah Howard, founder of the Companion Animal Protection Society first appeared on Talking Animals.
Toni and Emily talk and finish their conversation with Kendal who volunteers for Zoe's House Rescue. Zoe's house rescue saves the lives of dogs and puppies discarded and mistreated by the Amish puppy mills. This episode Kendal talks about some of the horrible things she's seen when going to pick up dogs from these farms. Kendal talks about how they created the relationship with the Amish and what that looks like on a case by case basis. Each dog they bring in has a different reason why it was surrendered. They take in a lot of medical cases as well. Poor breeding practices can lead to a lot of horrible and painful life long issues. Finally Toni and Emily close up the conversation talking about ways to help the mission and support Zoe's House Rescue. It is Puppy Mill awareness month and there are a lot of ways to spread the word to help prevent these puppy mills from these inhumane business practices. What is life like with a rescued puppy mill dog? And is there anything we can do to stop puppy mills? These are the questions we explore today with Dog Mom and Advocate Jo Anna Kloster, author of Lily Unleashed. Jo Anna shares the story of how Cagney, her first rescued puppy mill dog, changed her life and gave her passion and purpose. Jo Anna shares all that she's learned about the inner workings of puppy mills, pet stores and the laws that aren't being enforced. Jo Anna's passion and career as a teacher led her to writing Lily Unleashed, a chapter book for all ages that tells the story of how a rescued puppy mill dog inspires an insecure 6th grader to speak up and take a stand for what's right. We're also joined today by Megan, a young lady who just completed 6th grade, who gives us her book review of Lily Unleashed and what she thinks about puppy mills. The good news is that more Congressional leaders than ever are sponsoring new laws – Goldie's Act and the Puppy Mill Protection Act – which all of us can support with emails and phone calls.
