Ever feel like your past is holding you back as a dad? You're not alone—and you're not disqualified. This week, we sit down with a very special guest and new friend of the show, Sammy Perez. He's a husband, father of four, and national voice for second chances through his work at Prison Fellowship. Sammy's story is raw and real. From time behind bars to meeting Jesus in a prison cell and even finding his own father figure, his testimony will move you, but what God has done in his life since then and the work that has been done in his family is where the real story begins. We talk about: What it means to father with grace instead of guilt Why humility is a dad's greatest strength Breaking generational cycles (even if you were never shown how) The kind of legacy Jesus can build from failure Whether you grew up with the wrong role models—or none at all—this episode is a hope-filled reminder that it's never too late to begin again. Whenever you feel like life is running you over and it seems impossible that God could use you any more, soak in this reminder from Sammy: "I was created for more than this." This one is for the dad who feels disqualified. God's not done with you, even if there are times you might feel like you're done with him.   Check out more of Sammy's story here Learn about Sammy's work with Prison Fellowship here   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/   Join the Fatherhood Guard as a monthly donor: https://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/     Buy Kent's latest book: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon  Read the new State Of Biblical Fatherhood report here: http://manhoodjourney.org/sobf Find tools to share the report here: https://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools   Have a topic you want us to touch on? today's episode, we have the pleasure of talking with pastor Aaron Harvie. Aaron is the senior pastor at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. Prior to his role there, he served as a Church Planting Mobilizer with the North American Mission Board and taught at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has an extensive background in pastoring and planting churches in Kentucky and Philadelphia. Aaron and Allison have 5 children: John, Grace, Luke, Porter, and Claire. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ouachita Baptist University in 1995 and a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1998.   Needless to say, Aaron's a sharp dude. Not only that, he's a gold mine for dads who want to better disciple their kids. We get into some of his personal testimony, the importance of a close relationship with God's word, what it really means to "measure up" as a dad, and much more. You don't want to miss this one.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. It started as a simple family phrase: "Look for the overlooked." However, Lawson's daughter Olivia flipped this on its head, encouraging her students to ask if maybe one of the people you're overlooking is yourself—or even a version of yourself you've neglected for too long. In this episode, we unpack what it means to notice the unseen, and not just in the people around us, but in the parts of ourselves we've pushed aside. What have we neglected in the name of productivity? What's been quietly waiting for us to slow down, breathe, and listen?   Turns out, Jesus was in the business of seeing the overlooked—from the woman at the well to the leper no one would touch. And if we want to follow His lead as dads, it might mean noticing the quiet parts of our own soul that need care, rest, and reconnection with the Father. This one's part biblical reflection, part personal confession, and part reminder that even (especially?) the busiest dad needs to hit pause and pay attention to the ones that no one else will. -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Faithful. Gentle. Loving. Godly. Patient. These are the kinds of words we hope our kids would use to describe us. But if they were being totally honest, what's the one word they'd actually write down? Would it be something we're proud of—or something that hits a little too close to home, like angry, stressed, or even absent? In this episode, Kent and Lawson walk through a simple but eye-opening exercise that reveals how our day-to-day choices as dads shape how our kids experience us.   The good news? Whatever word they might choose today, it's doesn't have to be the final word. With time, intentionality, and God's help, we can grow into the kind of fathers who reflect the heart of Christ in our homes. There's no guilt trip here—just a real opportunity to reflect, reset, and grow. So whether you walk away from this conversation feeling encouraged or convicted, lean in. You are not a father on accident. So go be a father on purpose.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. In today's episode, we have the privilege of sharing our conversation with pastor and author Mark Batterson. Mark Batterson serves as lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, DC. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University and is the author of 24 books including the New York Times bestselling The Circle Maker as well as In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, and, most recently, A Million Little Miracles. As Mark likes to say, "There's only 2 ways to live your life - as if nothing is a miracle, or as if everything is."   His advice to dads is pretty straightforward: love your family as God has loved you. While this is simple, that doesn't mean it's easy. We get into some practical ways to love our kids as our Father has loved us. "How are your kids going to learn to say sorry if they don't hear it from you?" "We have to help our kids cultivate holy, non-anxious curiosity." "You can't force feed your kids Scripture...but you can live it." "We create the world our kids live in through our words." These are just some of the nuggets of wisdom from today's episode with Mark. We hope this conversation is encouraging, enlightening, and inspires you to go forth as a dad with refreshed love and kindness towards your kids.   Check out Mark's latest book: https://www.markbatterson.com/books/a-million-little-miracles/   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/ Buy Kent's latest book Don't Bench Yourself here: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon      Read the new State Of Biblical Fatherhood report here: http://manhoodjourney.org/sobf Find tools to share the report here: https://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools     Have a topic you want us to touch on? Ever tried to warn your kids about something and had them roll their eyes so hard it echoed? As dads, we've been down some rough roads—and part of our job is helping our kids avoid the same potholes. But how we offer that wisdom can make all the difference. Come on too strong and we sound like a lecture. Stay too quiet and we miss a chance to guide them. If you want to be heard and influential with your kids, this one's for you. In today's episode, Kent and Lawson dive into how to offer wise counsel that connects, using Solomon's masterclass in Proverbs 7 as a guide. They tackle questions like: How do we talk about modern dangers—porn, fame, vanity, etc.—without sounding like we're yelling from a mountaintop? How do we guide with humility, not certainty? How do we root our advice in relationship, share it through story, and still make the consequences clear? At the end of the day, our kids don't need a fortune-teller. They need a father who's humble, present, and willing to step in, without being a know-it-all. Let's dive in.   -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/ Buy Kent's latest book Don't Bench Yourself here: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon      Have a topic you want us to touch on? In this episode of You Can Mentor, host Zach talks with Kent Evans, founder of Manhood Journey, about the role of mentorship in fatherhood. Kent shares how a mentor shaped his teenage years and emphasizes the power of asking questions over giving answers. They explore the dangers of mentoring, the importance of humility, and how mentors should guide mentees in building decision-making skills. The goal is to transition from mentor to friend, creating a space where both mentor and mentee learn from each other.https://manhoodjourney.org/--Takeaways: Mentorship can profoundly impact personal development.Finding mentors who embody the qualities you aspire to is crucial.Asking questions is more effective than providing answers in mentorship. The best mentors learn from their failures and experiences.Mentors should aim to help protégés solve higher-order problems.Life experiences shape our understanding of mentorship.Building relationships with protégés can lead to lifelong friendships.Effective mentorship involves guiding others to think for themselves.Biblical principles can provide a foundation for fatherhood and mentorship.Mentorship is a continuous learning process for both mentors and protégés. Mentors should focus on asking questions instead of providing answers. It's crucial to help mentees build their own decision-making frameworks.Avoid the mentality that your way is the only way to succeed.Recognize that every individual has unique experiences and insights to share.Ego can hinder effective mentoring; humility is key.Mentoring is about guiding, not dictating paths.Encourage mentees to consider the impact of their decisions on relationships and community.Learning can happen in both directions in a mentoring relationship.Every person you meet has something to teach you.Mentors should model the behavior they wish to see in their mentees.--Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Background03:11 The Importance of Mentorship09:41 The Dangers of Mentoring12:41 Being the Answer Man19:56 Upgrading Problems in Mentorship20:15 The Role of Questions in Mentoring24:25 Building Decision-Making Frameworks26:40 Avoiding the 'My Way' Mentality34:49 The Importance of Trading Seats in Mentoring--It would mean the WORLD to us if you would leave a 5 star rating on our pod so we can reach more people! Reggie Jackson is known as one of the greatest homer hitters of all time. In fact, he's the 14th ranked homer hitter in the history of major league baseball. But he also has the dubious honor of being the player who struck out more than anyone else in the history of major league baseball. Question: When he struck out during an at bat, did he take himself out of the game and not go up to bat anymore? On this weeks podcast, Kurt and Chad welcome friend of the show and author Kent Evans of Manhood Journey www.manhoodjourney.org who talks about his new book “Don't Bench Yourself!” on how Dads need to confess and own up to their mistakes, but not take themselves “out of the game” and continue to do the job they've been given - relying on God's grace and mercy and not listening to the voice of the enemy trying to pull us out of the game!

One of the most common pieces of advice given from super successful individuals is bet on yourself. We have to believe that what we are doing is meaningful and that we have a purpose that is worth pursuing even through failures. But there is a reason the super successful individuals are a minority, most people give up on themselves.   I am joined today by my friend and executive director of Manhood Journey, Kent Evans, who recognized this issue and wrote a book to combat it. The book is titled, Don't Bench Yourself, and it is designed to motivate and encourage you to value yourself and stay in the game of life.   Kent and I discuss the book, what it means to not quit on yourself, why that is important, and how you can keep moving forward through adversity.   Get your copy of Don't Bench Yourself: https://amzn.to/4gHa3Wr   Learn more about Kent and Manhood Journey by visiting: manhoodjourney.org   —   Get your copy of the new devotional for dads, Following Our Father: https://amzn.to/4dtGfKD   Get your free gift, a copy of Cut The Crap (E-book): https://fatheringourfuture.com/2024/08/04/free-download-for-new-dads/   Become a financial partner with Fathering Our Future and make a direct impact on dads: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/

With references to Jim Davis's 'The Great Dechurching,' the speaker emphasizes the critical role of men in the church and society. Addressing how societal views have vilified men, the script suggests a shift from shame-based to affirmational methods to encourage men's return to church. It underscores the importance of wisdom, strong familial structures, and the pivotal role fathers play in mending homes, churches, and communities. The discussion also explores practical steps for church leaders and fathers to nurture a spiritually strong and knowledgeable generation. The discussion highlights a troubling fact from Jim Davis's book, "The Great Dechurching": nearly 45 million people in North America have stopped attending church over the past two decades. The episode reveals a significant gender gap in church attendance, with congregations typically being 61% female and 39% male. This disparity reflects a broader societal issue where men are undervalued and underrepresented. The lack of male engagement with faith is seen as a barrier to their spiritual growth and leadership in their families and communities. Oxford researcher Jim McNamara points out that mass media often portrays men negatively, which erodes their self-worth and further decreases their involvement in religious settings. Rather than shaming men into returning to church, the episode advocates for affirming and encouraging them. It stresses the need to educate and mentor men, helping them understand their roles and responsibilities rather than reprimanding them. Kent Evans, founder of Manhood Journey, is introduced as a key advocate for revitalizing the family as the cornerstone of society. His focus is on equipping fathers to raise godly men, which strengthens families and churches. Evans shares personal stories and insights on fatherhood, highlighting the importance of wisdom, communication, and aligning actions with God's teachings. He also addresses common challenges fathers face, such as time management and communication, and offers practical advice on improving these areas. The episode concludes with an interactive segment where Evans discusses wisdom through the book of Proverbs, urging fathers to lead by example and be open to feedback.   In summary, "BetterMan 4" calls for a reevaluation of how the church engages with men, promoting a supportive and empowering approach that encourages men to embrace their roles as leaders in their families and communities. Every father needs the right tools to raise his kids well, and Kent Evans likes to use the analogy of a Swiss Army Knife. His main blades include asking thoughtful questions, seeking wisdom from others, and staying rooted in God's Word. Tune in now to discover why anger isn't an effective parenting strategy—and what you should do instead.    Key Takeaways   Be curious and seek wisdom from the men you know.  Your boys need to hear you acknowledge your weaknesses and imperfections.  Don't connect your apology to your child's behavior.  You don't need to have a sex talk with your son; you need to have an 8-10 year conversation. As dads, most of our anger is not righteous anger.   Kent Evans   Kent Evans is the Executive Director and co-founder of Manhood Journey, a ministry that helps dads become disciple-makers. He's a Christian speaker and author of three books. Kent and his wife, April, have been married for 29 years and have five sons.    Key Quotes   24:36 - "Odds are, the vast majority of things that make you angry are unbiblical, unwise, and unproductive. Let's go explore those together and see what God's Word has to say about it. Because for me, I have discovered over time that there there is a way to look at life through a far less angry lens and to be able to call my anger out when it happens in a way that's more healthy, albeit sometimes more painful. And I just hope I can get some dads to join me on that that journey. Because frankly, we hear from dads all the time who say their number one struggle is anger." 32:51 - "Let all, not some, let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Anger is not to be managed. It is not to be controlled per se, although we should have control over our mouth and our spirit. Anger is to be put away. As we look at it, it's a very challenging topic because our culture and our modern era and our access to news that doesn't matter. Proverbs 16, whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty and he who rules his spirit, then he who takes a city. Do you have governance over your spirit? Can you rule your spirit? Can I rule my spirit or does my spirit rule me? And we just find anger lurking in the shadows so often, almost every day."   Links from Today's Conversation   Apply to join the Fall 2024 DadAwesome Accelerator Cohort: Email awesome@dadawesome.org to learn more   Manhood Journey Timothy Keller Books The Anger Free Dad Course Father on Purpose Podcast Kent Evans Books   Connect with dadAWESOME   Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

For many of us, action equals success. But Jesus had a different take on what really matters in life. In John 15, He emphasized that our work for God is not nearly as important as the work God accomplishes through us. It's always better to be a giver than a receiver, and the greatest gift guys can give their wives, their kids, their friends, and their co-workers is the gift of time. But truly investing time requires more than our physical presence. We've got to give the people closest to us our undivided attention. We've got to put the distractions on the shelf and really plug into the words and hearts of those around us. In such a noisy and chaotic culture, that can be easier said than done; but it's the only way to make and maintain strong connections in the relationships that matter most.   Help make this podcast possible. Proverbs 25 offers some great insight into giving your family a safe space and the impact of sharing a cold cup of water with the thirsty souls living under your roof.   Help make this podcast possible.
