It's fair to say that Maplin's MD Ollie Marshall has a been a Magento Open Source loyalist and enthusiast for many years. We recorded an episode with him two years ago on how Maplin built a scalable Magento solution, at which point open source aligned with the business and technical needs. When he announced that Maplin's ecommerce stack would pivot, moving away from open source to a new SaaS solution, we thought it would be interesting to find what brought about the strategic change of direction, and why now. In this episode we explore the commercial decision-making path, understanding why Ollie decided SaaS was the right approach and what made Shopify the right fit.
Make a Vortex Cannon. This is a device for firing a coherent torus-shaped vortex across a room. If it is made with a degree of care, it will extinguish the flame of a candle from some distance. What you will need An empty Pringles can. This is the cylindrical foil-lined cardboard tube which originally contained Pringles potato chips. A party balloon. Some strong parcel tape. A hole punch capable of making a clean hole of about two centimetres (three quarters of an inch) in diameter. A small drill. What to do Step 1: Drill a small hole in the metal end-plate of the Pringles can. This hole needs to be large enough to accommodate the threaded portion of the hole punch. The hole needs to be as close to the exact dead-centre of the plate as you can make it. Use the hole punch to make as clean as possible a hole as accurately as possible. Here in the UK it is possible to obtain a hole punch called a Q-Max punch from Maplin, the supplier of electronic and hobby parts. I am sure they are available from other sources. It is very important that this hole is: As close to the centre of the end-plate as is humanly possible Has edges which are clean and crisp. Hence the use of a hole punch. It is these two factors more than any other that will effect the efficiency of the cannon. Step 2: Cut off the mouth-piece end of the balloon. Stretch it over the open end of the Pringles can and pull it as tight over the end as you can. When I say the open end I mean the end from which you removed the lid and chomped on the chips. Use the parcel tape to wrap the balloon tightly around the circumference of the cylinder, anchoring it in position so that the open end of the can is now like a drum formed by the stretchy membrane of the balloon. Nice and tight. The cannon is now ready to fire. Firing the cannon Pinch the centre of the balloon membrane and pull it back as far as you can. This might be easier if you push some kind of (blunt ended) rod into the can from the hole end and push out the membrane until you can pinch it. Some other stretchy latex device which has a little bulb at the end might be easier to get hold of, but I can't think of such an item, can you? When you let go of the membrane with it stretched out as far as you can go, what happens? Well, if you made the small circular hole at the metal-plate end of the cylinder nice and clean and central, the cannon fires a coherent vortex of air. What do I mean by a 'vortex'? Imagin a ring doughnut compromised of air shooting out of the end of the tube like a smoke ring out of a Hobbit. The vortex is spinning. Not like the bullet fired from a rifled barrel, but as if it is constantly trying to turn itself inside-out. This spinning keeps the torus (this is what the shape of a ring doughnut is called) coherent and intact for several feet. If you made the hole in the metal plate end of the tube nice and clean, and you stretched the balloon membrane out as far as you possibly can, the cannon is capable of blowing out the flame of a candle at about ten feet (three metres) in the still air in a room. As soon as it leaves the cannon, the vortex will begin to degrade and fall apart. A word of warning This little toy might only be firing a torus of air, but do not be tempted to shoot yourself or the cat in the face at point blank range. It hurts. Mike

Vince Rogers - Testcard F - in conversation with David Eastaugh Norwich, experimental synth pop band formed in 1981 - formed in the early 1980s at the UEA. Famously had an indie chart hit with Bandwagon Tango. They completed a second EP and also did a Peel Session. Before releasing solo material as alpha seven, Pete used to be in Testcard F, an early experimental synth pop outfit based in Norwich, reaching the dizzy heights of a Peel session in 1982 and two singles on the Backs record label. Instrumentation included electronic percussion built from Maplin kits, augmented with a coat rack and waste bins to give a human feel. There was a borrowed EDP Wasp, 1960s Farfisa organ, Casio VL-Tone and a drum machine that held a single song, hence they used backing cassettes

Steve Jobs said "You can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” When serial investor Mark Masiak looked back at the dots in his life. And when he learned about the struggles that entrepreneurs like Richard Branson went through. He realised that the steps they took and the struggles they endured were virtually identical to his own. The big difference was scale. Mark came from a working-class background. He thought a good salary was £20k per year. So when he was running one of the largest kitchens in Milton Keynes and earning £25K per year. He thought he had made it. At the start of his entrepreneurial journey, he never dreamed of buying Maplin. And 2 years after he almost lost everything in the acquisition from hell. He's built a portfolio of 8 companies. That success has helped Mark to change his mindset and to dream much, much bigger. Dreaming bigger is what made Mark try to buy Maplin out of administration. Maplin was a £250 million turnover company. So that's quite a leap from the chef thinking that £25K was the end of the rainbow. In the end, Mark didn't buy Maplin because there wasn't enough value to salvage. If you'd like to learn: How Mark finds businesses to buy - so you can copy and paste his simple strategy How Mark sends personal messages to entrepreneurs about selling their business The script that Mark uses to buy businesses with Deferred Consideration (paying the owner from the profits of the business) The ONE piece of advice Mark would give every dealmaker Then you need to listen to podcast episode 9. The high street has been back in the news with M&S and Carphone Warehouse the latest to announce massive store closures, and a survey from Which? revealing the shops we like the least. It doesn't look great for the high street. I now live in a relatively wealthy part of Yorkshire compared to other parts, and there are lots of independent shops and restaurants. But in the three months I've been here we’ve lost the H&M, Byron, Maplin, Game, Thorntons, East, Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, Mulityork, Jamies Italian and some local independents too. What’s the end game? Where I grew up in Kent the nearby towns are essentially just pound shops and charity shops. And why is it happening? Well in this week's episode I've looked at some of the causes - and shared a few things we can do to try to stop the rot. More over at https://becleverwithyourcash.com/cashchats61

This week it's all about the snow - and whether or not global warming is to blame. The TaskForce team then turns its attention to saving Toys R Us and Maplin.
Toys R Us and Maplin were sunk this week, investors are nervously watching Carpetright and Mothercare, and restaurants from Jamie Oliver’s, to Byron, and now Prezzo are closing their doors. This week’s shop closures could see more than 5,000 jobs lost. It looks like a slow motion crash on the High Street. But at the same time the economy is doing okay, and sales in the housing market are reasonably buoyant, so why the trouble? In this week’s podcast, Simon Lambert, Georgie Frost and Rachel Rickard Straus take a look at Britain’s high street woes and whether it is company debt, consumer confidence, overexpansion gone wrong, or a failure to keep up with the times that is sinking well-known names. Also on the show, we take a look at what Warren Buffett learnt from his ten–year tracker fund bet – and the twist in the tale of how he won it. Plus, how the value of your old £10 note changed through its lifetime and the things most likely to go wrong on a new car.
