Today we're sharing an interview recorded this week with Gabriel Kuhn speaking about the West German urban guerrilla group the 2nd of June Movement, the book he co-edited on this subject entitled From Hash Rebels to Urban Guerrillas: A Documentary History of the 2nd of June Movement (from PM Press and Kersplebedb), the milieu from which it arose, how it compared to other groups at the time like the Red Army Faction, and some of the legacy of their critiques and interventions on radical politics in the autonomen movement and beyond. For the hour we speak about the context from which the 2nd of June Movement grew (alongside the Red Army Faction, Revolutionary Cells and others) in the 1970's, their goals and actions, the timing of the book and the legacy that these groups left to German society and the autonomous movements that continued. • Our prior interview with Gabriel on Liberating Sapmi • Gabriel's blog: https://lefttwothree.org/ • A blog collecting documents of this period: http://germanguerilla.com/ . ... . .. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a reunion of sorts, in celebration of a new release of old music: It's David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish. These three met in the fertile Louisville scene of the early 1990s. Pajo played guitar in the wildly influential band Slint and went on to play with Tortoise, Royal Trux, Stereolab, and Interpol at various times over the years—he's currently a member of Gang Of Four. But the subject of this conversation is Pajo's sorta-solo career, which went through various M-names, from just M to Papa M and Aerial M. As Aerial M, Pajo brought on some friends for a brief time to tour Europe, where they recorded a Peel Session—more on that in a minute. The friends that Pajo recruited to play in the Aerial M live band were Tim Furnish, whose legendary Louisville band Crain had broken up recently—and who has since recorded experimental rock with the band Parlour—as well as Cassie Berman and Tony Bailey. Berman had been kicking around in Louisville bands, too, and she would go on to join Silver Jews, the band fronted by her husband, David Berman. Drummer Tony Bailey, as you'll hear, played in about a million bands in the area—he died, sadly, in 2009. The reason for today's reunion of the lineup that burned bright but quick is the release of Aerial M's new Peel Sessions album. In case you're unfamiliar, BBC DJ John Peel used to invite the coolest bands of his day—from the ‘70s into the 2000s—to record a few songs specifically for his show, many of which were later released with the same striking artwork. In 1998, Aerial M stopped by and recorded three songs that would turn out quite different to the versions Pajo crafted in the studio, and would really be the only evidence that this lineup left of its existence. Pajo was recently reminded of this session, so he set about tracking down the tapes, sprucing them up, and handing them over to Drag City for a proper release—including an amazing replica of those original John Peel Sessions sleeves. Check out the song “Vivea” right here. I don't think these three had sat down for a chat in a while, so it's like sitting in on a reunion with three people who have a lot of fond memories. They talk about their '98 tour, including the recording of this record, plus they get into fond remembrances of Tony Bailey, racing Stereolab to the record store, and even what they're up to now: Just a few days before this recording, Cassie Berman participated in a tribute to David Berman on the anniversary of his untimely passing, and Furnish has been working on some cool-sounding visual art for other bands. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish for chatting. Gavin discusses The Cure's six appearances on the Peel Sessions.
Only a handful of bands made up the 2 Tone era of ska in late 70s England. Today, we bring on Rhoda Dakar, the singer of The Bodysnatchers, an all-female ska band that released 2 singles on the 2 Tone record label before breaking up. The band also recorded a few Peel Sessions and were featured on Dance Craze. Though short-lived, The Bodysnatchers were an important band and are still loved by many to this day. Rhoda also sang on the Specials' song "I Can't Stand It" (A really cool duet with Terry Hall), and was part of Jerry Dammers' Special AKA project. Their In The Studio record took 2 years to record. Rhoda tells us about "I Can't Stand It" and what it was like to work on In The Studio. (It was no fun!) We also talk about Rhoda's pre-Bodysnatchers years of being a punk kid and seeing Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, becoming friends with The Sex Pistols' Paul Cook and Steve Jones, and how she tried (and failed) to sneak into a Roxy Music concert in 1973. She tells us what it was like to work with The Interrupters on their most recent record, how she finally got to perform at the Brixton Academy Theater and the role that The Pogues' Shane MacGowan had in her joining The Bodysnatchers. She talks about writing "Ruder than You" with scenester Gaz Mayall (son of British blues legend John Mayall), playing on the Seaside Tour with The Specials and the Go Go's, and we talk about the legacy of her song The Boiler. Dolan Hewison in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.au-turn.com/about The band recorded three sessions for John Peel's radio show, the first two of which were compiled onto an album, The Peel Sessions in 1991. Their song "Big" also reached No. 14 in the Festive Fifty in 1990 and featured on the influential 1990 compilation album Happy Daze. Their lone charting success in the United States was the single "Stockholm", which reached No. 30 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts in 1993.

We've reached double digits! As we progress in our journey through the Smiths career, we need to pay mention to one of the most influential figures in the progress of their journey, BBC 1's John Peel. Spray anyone? 2023 sees Spray ring in the new year by bringing their Songs Already Sung project – a collection of carefully curated cover songs – to streaming services. Spray is comprised of Ricardo Autobahn (synthesizers) and Jenny McLaren (vocals, guitars), both formerly (and once again) of the Cuban Boys, who took their chaotic technopunk to number 1 on the Festive 50 (twice), recorded one of the best Peel Sessions ever and went head-to-head with Sir Cliff Richard in a Christmas Chart Battle. For the duo, Songs Already Sung was something of a experiment and a departure from their standard way of working. Says Ricardo in his own inimitable style, “Songs Already Sung was an ongoing project throughout 2022, which built into a whole album month by month of popular beat group Spray performing some great hits of yesteryear.” Though there's only 12 months in the year, in a very Spray move Songs Already Sung actually comprises 14 tracks. That number is a tribute to both the band's expansive musical taste, unique approach to the project, and the sheer number of fantastic fan-generated ideas the band received after a callout on social media. As Ricardo stated at the commencement of what was then called the Untitled Covers Project, “We have a number of cover versions to keep our live set interesting, but as for our albums, they've been strictly originals only. So, we felt it might be fun, and also a good way of keeping ourselves proactive, to record a covers album, recording and releasing the songs one a month. This allows for an element of interactivity, fan suggestions, and also the possibility we'll end up with more songs than we expected. Or possibly less.” He added, “These won't be necessarily what you'd expect from us either. The idea of Spray cover versions is to take something as far away from our oeuvre as we can find and then drag it kicking and screaming into the Spray Universe.” The fourteen tracks on Song Already Sung include classics from The (Detroit) Spinners, Living Color, KISS, Nine Inch Nails, and Tori Amos. Also featured and given the Spray treatment are songs by Roger Whittaker – a rare vocal outing from Ricardo – Hazel O'Connor, Faith No More, Chas and Dave, Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle, The Connells, Lil Nas X, and Blink 182. Last but not least, fans of 70s British educational TV will be intrigued by the inclusion of Paddy Kingsland's The Boy from Space, given a suitable cosmic-sounding and rather cheeky Spray makeover. The collection of tracks on Song Already Sung is sure to bring a smile to your face, and maybe the odd tear of joy to an eye or two. Music Available on AnalogueTrash
Andrea Parker & Paul Adams - Melys - in conversation with David Eastaugh The group was formed by Andrea Parker (vocals) and Paul Adams (guitar and keyboards) when the two met in Betws-y-Coed in 1996. The two became both musical and personal partners and recruited Adams' brother Gary Husband on drums and their friend Carys Jones on keyboards. After releasing two EP's with local label Ankstmusik the group was signed to Pinnacle Records releasing their first album Rumours and Curses in 1998. Unfortunately their relations with Pinnacle, always strained, fell apart completely when that label went bankrupt at the end of the year. The group subsequently founded their own label, Sylem Records, on which their second album Kamikaze was released. Jones left the band at around this time to be replaced by Richard Eardley who continues as bassist with them to this day. John Peel, a long-time fan of the group (and for whom they recorded 11 Peel Sessions) introduced the group to Dutch band Seedling in late 2000 and they released a split single in collaboration with them (the song on Seedling's side was called "Cool Baby My Hips Go Woo") in early 2001.
James Smith - The Nightingales - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://uknightingales.bandcamp.com/album/the-last-laugh The Nightingales are a British post-punk/alternative rock band, formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England, by four members of Birmingham's punk group The Prefects. They had been part of The Clash's 'White Riot Tour', recorded a couple of Peel Sessions, released a 45 on Rough Trade and, years after splitting up, had a retrospective CD released by US indie label Acute Records. Described in John Robb's book on 'post punk' Death To Trad Rock as "The misfits' misfits" and comprising an ever-fluctuating line up, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, the Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early 1980s as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, who said of them – "Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans".

Vince Rogers - Testcard F - in conversation with David Eastaugh Norwich, experimental synth pop band formed in 1981 - formed in the early 1980s at the UEA. Famously had an indie chart hit with Bandwagon Tango. They completed a second EP and also did a Peel Session. Before releasing solo material as alpha seven, Pete used to be in Testcard F, an early experimental synth pop outfit based in Norwich, reaching the dizzy heights of a Peel session in 1982 and two singles on the Backs record label. Instrumentation included electronic percussion built from Maplin kits, augmented with a coat rack and waste bins to give a human feel. There was a borrowed EDP Wasp, 1960s Farfisa organ, Casio VL-Tone and a drum machine that held a single song, hence they used backing cassettes
“The Circle” The singer/guitarist Jim Shepherd is probably best known for being a part of the legendary indie Scottish outfit the Jasmine Minks. One of the first bands signed to Alan McGee's Creation Records, the ‘Minks put out a handful of albums, including classics like Another Age and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 All Good Preachers Go To Heaven. They played with bands like the Violent Femmes, Jesus and Mary Chain and The Go-Betweens, recorded a Peel Session, got tons of critical acclaim and got airplay on college stations all across the U.S. The band went on hiatus in 2001, reformed in 2010, played sporadic gigs here and there since then, put out a handful of new singles and have a new album brewing as we speak. In the meantime, Shepherd's first solo album has just hit shelves. Titled The Circle, Shepherd's band for the record includes members of The Loft, The Weather Prophets, June Brides and The Distractions. A ferocious and thoughtful collection filled with indie rock stomp, melodic mod hooks and introspective ballads, The Circle is stirring, satisfying and altogether thrilling work. www.jimjasmine.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine/com

Matt McManamon is perhaps best known as the febrile frontman of the one-time Deltasonic darlings, The Dead 60s. His incredible musical journey has seen him play Peel Session, replace Roddy Radiation to become a touring member of The Specials and appear twice on Top of the Pops. Nearly two decades since since tracks like “Riot Radio” hit the charts and tore up indie dancefloors across the nation, McManamon has now returned with an altogether different outlook on his passion for recording and playing live music, and the release of his debut solo album ‘Scally Folk'. We finally managed to meet up with Matt (along with fellow musician, Vinny Redmond) as he arrived in Liverpool to play an acoustic set at the amazing St Michael's Sessions, where we talked to him about his incredible career, how it feels to be back on the road again and what music means to him.

Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is author, restaurant critic and broadcaster Grace Dent, and they're comparing notes on what they would bring to an Ultimate Christmas Experience including the Have A Cracking Christmas At Woolworths and Christmas '82 - Today's Tesco adverts, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer pilot The Weekenders, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie pilot The Crystal Cube, John Peel's Festive Fifty, The NME Singles Of The Year 1991, Sky Star Search, the lost Doctor Who panto episode from 1965, The Butthole Surfers appearing on Snub TV, a disastrous interview from Channel 4's Naked City, Chas'n'Dave's Christmas Knees-Up, Chorlton In The Iceworld, Banned From The Pubs by Peter And The Test Tube Babies, Weed Bus by The Stairs, and some unwelcome intrusions from Max Headroom, a shower of 'refreshed' Granada announcers and the Test Card Clown - but no Test Card Girl. Along the way we'll be testing the scientific veracity of Schrodinger's Peel Session, querying whether David Quantick is the real Santa, suffering from Hugh Laurie Seasickness, discovering the exact wrong Pulp song to serenade someone with, and calling for the immediate abolition of Sexually Assertive Butter Men.You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.

If you wander the fabled corridors of Maida Vale Studios you will walk past MV4: the studio where John Peel recorded his famous ‘Peel Sessions', which is marked with a picture of the great presenter to celebrate his legacy. Just a few metres away is the now famous MV7, home to Elis and John's Maida Vale Sessions. Though it is marked with a sign saying “Please wear ear protection during live sessions” and a portrait of James and Robins is absent it surely won't be long until it is nicknamed “The Elis and John (and Producer Dave) Studio”. To celebrate their final show at Maida Vale Self Esteem stopped by to talk about her new album and perform a song live in the studio, Dave dropped his hosting duties to take part in a Made Up Game for the first time EVER, the guys share one of the all-time great emails and Elis gets upset by a Beatles revelation.

On the third episode of the Post-Punk Podcast music industry veteran and contributing editor Thomas Thyssen joins Editor in Chief Alex Baker for an interview with Clan of Xymox founder and frontman Ronny Moorings. During the interview, we look back on 40 years of the band, beginning with their rare Demo EP Subsequent Pleasures, and discuss how with the help of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, Clan of Xymox were signed to 4AD. Throughout the interview, we delve further into Clan of Xymox's 4AD years. During this time, they would release their classic 1985 self-titled debut album, which features the fantastic single A Day, and Stranger, both remixed by John Fryer into dancefloor hits as the and its follow-up Medusa. In light of Clan of Xymox's recent release Peel Sessions on vinyl, we also discuss the two recording sessions for John Peel's radio show, which, as legends goes, is how the Genre 'Darkwave" was coined. For the first time in decades, these Peel recordings are finally available on vinyl and digital formats through Dark Entries. George Horn remastered all songs at Fantasy Studios. Eloise Leigh designed the sleeve, taking inspiration from Vaughn Oliver's iconic designs for 4AD. A 2-sided insert with archival photos and notes from Ronny and Anka recounting their experiences recording at the BBC studio. Th' Faith Healers special with Roxanne Stephen in conversation with David Eastaugh Th' Faith Healers were an English indie rock band who were originally active between 1990 and 1994. The members of the group were Roxanne Stephen (vocals), Tom Cullinan (guitar and vocals), Ben Hopkin (bass), and Joe Dilworth (drums).[1] They recorded multiple EPs and singles along with two full LPs. Tom Cullinan, who handled the bulk of the songwriting, went on to help form the band Quickspace. Signed to Too Pure in the United Kingdom, their albums were released by Elektra in the United States. Both albums feature clear krautrock influences, most evident in their cover of Can's "Mother Sky", from Lido. Since their initial break-up in 1994, the band have reformed intermittently. They embarked on a short reunion tour in 2006 in conjunction with the release of their compilation Peel Sessions the previous year. The band reformed in 2009, playing at the All Tomorrow's Partiesmusic festival twice, first in May (curated by The Breeders) and then again in December (curated by My Bloody Valentine).
El tema aparece en el álbum ‘This Is The Modern World’ de 1979.
“Creep”, primeiro sucesso do grupo teve sua melodia inspirada (ou plagiada, chame como quiser) na música “The Air That I Breath”, do The Hollies. 01 The Hollies - The Air That I Breath 02 R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe 03 Talking Heads - Radio Head 04 Japan - Quiet Life 05 Can - Vitamin C 06 Joy Division - Shadowplay 07 The Smiths - How Soon Is Now 08 Magazine - The Light Pours Out of Me 09 Neu! - Hallogallo 10 Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot 11 Pixies - Where is My Mind 12 The Fall - C.R.E.E.P. 23 Skidoo with Alex Turnbull in conversation with David Eastaugh Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills, and later augmented by Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop, 23 Skidoo had interests in martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets, William S. Burroughs, as well as the emerging confluence of industrial, post-punk and funk, heard in artists such as A Certain Ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and This Heat. Their first 7", "Ethics", was released in 1980, followed by "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" & "Last Words" 12" single which was co-produced by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson from Cabaret Voltaire at their studio, The Western Works in Sheffield. A Peel Session was recorded on 16 September 1981. Their début album, Seven Songs, was released in 1982 and is said to evoke the claustrophobic humidity of an African forest. The album went straight to number 1 in the Independent charts. Seven Songs, which was recorded and mixed in three days, was co-produced by Tony, Terry and David, aka Genesis P-Orridge, and Peter Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV and engineer Ken Thomas. A hastily executed EP, Tearing Up The Plans, was produced in the absence of the Turnbull brothers, who were travelling in Indonesia. The personality clashes that arose from this experiment resulted in guitarist Sam Mills and vocalist Tom Heslop leaving the band soon after. The band performed for the first time as a three piece, joined onstage by David Tibet of Current 93, at the first WOMAD festival. This live performance would go on to become the first side of the band's most challenging release, The Culling Is Coming, which also features Skidoo's exploration into gamelan on side two. The album resulted in the band being criticised for being 'too abstract'. 1984 saw the arrival of bassist Peter "Sketch" Martin following the break-up of Linx. Skidoo recruited Aswad's horn section for the "Coup" 12", which featured samples from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now and which was interpolated from their track "Fuck You G.I." from the album Urban Gamelan (1984). Urban Gamelan features Sketch on side one and, on side two, the original three piece line-up experimenting with metal percussion using patterns inspired by gamelan. After having been evicted from their rehearsal space at Genesis P-Orridge's "Death Factory" the band shifted their focus towards hip hop and turned their attention to production and building a studio, Precinct 23. In 1987 they released a compilation album, Just Like Everybody, featuring work from this period. In 1987 the Turnbull brothers formed the Ronin label and released Jailbreak by Paradox, widely regarded as one of the first breakbeat records, as well as tracks by British photographer Normski and MC FORCE. In its later incarnation, Ronin released material by Deckwrecka, Roots Manuva, Skitz, Mud Family and Rodney P amongst others. They signed to Virgin Records in 1991 and were able to build a new studio with their advance. In 2000 they released a self-titled LP, which featured contributions from Pharoah Sanders and Roots Manuva. This was followed by a compilation of singles, The Gospel Comes To New Guinea in 2002, and for the first time on CD, reissues of Seven Songs and Urban Gamelan. In 2008 the expanded catalogue CD reissues were issued by LTM, who also issued a double-vinyl edition of Seven Songs in 2012. This issue featured the 1981 John Peel session and 12" versions of "Last Words" and "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea". In November 2013, the band played the final holiday camp edition of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Camber Sands, England. In 2012 Alex Turnbull co-directed Beyond Time, a documentary film about his artist father William Turnbull. The film was narrated by Jude Law and scored by 23 Skidoo with both new and old material. The soundtrack album (packaged with a DVD of the film) was released by Les Disques Du Crépuscule in 2014.

Cud special with William Potter with David Eastaugh Cud are a British indie rock band formed in Leeds, England in 1987. The original line up included vocalist Carl Puttnam, guitarist/keyboardist Mike Dunphy, bassist William Potter, and drummer Steve Goodwin. In June 1987 they recorded a Peel Session and the band signed with Reception Records who released their first single "Mind the Gap". Two further 12" EPs followed in 1988 on Nightshift and Ediesta Records. Following extensive touring and positive press the band signed to Imaginary Records in 1989. Following three albums (one of which Elvis Belt was a compilation of previously released singles) on Imaginary the band signed with A&M Records in 1991. Although two singles broke into the UK Top 40 and they released two further LPs the band's fortunes declined and the band broke up in early 1995. The band reformed in 2006 to support the release of a greatest hits album with Felix Frey replacing Dunphy on guitar. When guitarist Mike Dunphy later rejoined, drummer Steve Goodwin decided to stop touring and was replaced by Gogs Byrn. The band continue to tour and attend Indie rock festivals such as the Shiiine On weekender.
Galaxie 500 & Luna special with Dean Wareham in conversation Guitarist Dean Wareham, drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang had met at the Dalton School in New York City in 1981, but began playing together during their time as students at Harvard University.Wareham and Krukowski had formed a series of punk-influenced student bands, before Wareham returned to New York. When he returned in 1987 he and Krukowski formed a new band, with Yang joining the group on bass guitar, the new group deciding on the name Galaxie 500, after a friend's car, a Ford Galaxie 500. The band began playing gigs in Boston and New York City, and recorded a demo which they sent to Shimmy Disc label boss and producer Mark Kramer, who agreed to produce the band. With Kramer at the controls, the band recorded the "Tugboat" single in February 1988, and the "Oblivious" flexi-disc, and moved on to record their debut album, Today, which was released on the small Aurora label. The band toured the United Kingdom in late 1988 and in 1989, then signed to Rough Trade and released their second album, On Fire, which has been described as "lo-fi psychedelia reminiscent of Jonathan Richman being backed by The Velvet Underground", and is considered the band's defining moment. On Fire reached number 7 in the UK Indie Chart, and met with much critical acclaim in the United Kingdom, but was less well received by the US music press, who cited Wareham's 'vocal limitations' as a weakness. Galaxie 500 recorded two sessions for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 programme, these later released on the Peel Sessions album. Their cover of Jonathan Richman's "Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste" was also voted into number 41 in 1989's Festive 50 by listeners to the show. The band split up in the spring of 1991 after the release of their third album, This Is Our Music. Wareham, who had already moved back to New York, quit the band after a lengthy American tour. Galaxie 500's records were released in the US and UK on the independent Rough Trade label. When Rough Trade went bankrupt in 1991, Krukowski and Yang purchased the masters at auction, reissuing them on Rykodisc in 1996 as a box set containing all three albums and another disc of rarities.
Mega City Four special with Danny Brown in conversation - talking about life in the band & much much more - with David Eastaugh Mega City Four were an English indie rock band formed in Farnborough, Hampshire, who obtained popularity throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Mega City Four consisted of guitarist and vocalist Wiz, his brother and rhythm guitarist Danny Brown, bassist Gerry Bryant and drummer Chris Jones. According to Uncut magazine, the group "earned a reputation across the globe as an exciting live band". Wiz and Bryant were in a band together at school called 'Stallion', who performed two shows together. One of the shows took place at Cove Secondary School (where "Stallion will come for you" stickers were handed out in an attempt to bolster the bands following) and the show was concluded when the school cut the power. Wiz, seeking more independence to write his own music, decided he wanted to form a new band with Bryant and Danny Brown, named 'Capricorn', after the brothers' shared the star sign. Capricorn formed in June 1982. They consisted of drummer Martin Steib, vocalist and guitarist Wiz, rhythm guitarist Danny and bassist Gerry. The band had a personal fallout in regards to musical direction and dissolved in 1986. A four-track demo was recorded in 1982, and they released one demo, titled 'The Good News Tape' in 1985. The trio of Gerry, Danny and Wiz maintained closeness and enlisted Chris Jones (who drummed in local band Exit East) to join their new group. The new name, initially suggested by Steib in the Capricorn era, was decided as Mega City Four. The group were officially formed in 1987 and the band's career started with performing gigs around their local town of Farnborough before making their vinyl debut in September 1987 with "Miles Apart"/"Running In Darkness"[2]. The single led to a round of gigs with fellow punk-influenced bands like Senseless Things and Snuff. "Miles Apart" and "Running" were reissued (separately) in 1988 on the independent label Decoy, along with the more melodic "Distant Relatives" and "Less Than Senseless". A healthy following latched on to them quickly, and by 1988 the group were performing to packed audiences on a regular basis. Continuing on their local success, the band would eventually release their 1989 debut album, Tranzophobia. The band continued to tour extensively in the UK, Europe and North America, working with bands including Les Thugs, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machineand Doughboys, amongst many others. The band's second studio album, Who Cares Wins, was released in 1990. Extensive touring across Europe began again, with the band performing in the Reading Festival that year. Who Cares Wins was followed by a compilation album of their early 7" singles, called Terribly Sorry Bob (1991). The band subsequently moved to a major record label to record two further studio albums, Sebastopol Rd. (1992) (recorded by Jessica Corcoran at London's Greenhouse Recording Studios) and Magic Bullets (1993). This album produced the singles Wallflower and Iron Sky, which both placed 69 and 48 in the music charts respectively. After falling out with their record label, they moved to Fire Records to record their final studio album, Soulscraper (1996). In addition to their studio albums, the band also released a live album, a Peel Sessions disc, and a number of singles. The British music journalist, Martin Roach, wrote a biography of the band, "Mega City Four: Tall Stories and Creepy Crawlies", published in 1993.
Welcome back to Yesterdays Jam and this Listener Special!!!John Robert Parker Ravenscroft, OBE, known as the legendary DJ, presenter, producer and journalist - John Peel. This is just under three hours of some of your favourite memories from the hundreds of Peel Sessions that were recorded. This man was a true inspiration for many people around the world...and I'm sure that a fair few of us have him to thank for the music tastes that we have cultured today. We also have a very apt Q+A from Tom of The Cool Greenhouse...I think John Peel would have loved his music. So as always...get yourself a comfy seat...or a large bit of the motorway to get through...and enjoy.
It's Selling Out's 27th episode, and there are some subjects loosely based on our hosts' relationships. Nate's girlfriend has brought home a new addition to their already ridiculous number of pets, and has also started to drift away from her skeptic roots into a more holistic path, much to Nate's chagrin. Dave brings up the issue of housework, and how his household tasks seem to garner a bit less enthusiasm from the Mrs. than he would hope for. We also get our obligatory update on Dave's ongoing battle with low testosterone, Then comes a discussion on the controversial final season of one of our generation's most popular and beloved TV shows, Game of Thrones. Nate, in particular, has some strong feelings on the direction the writers decided to take the show as it wraps up. Finally, Nate explores the legacy of John Peel, the influential British radio DJ who introduced his audience to countless bands that may have otherwise remained undiscovered. And in honor of John Peel, Nate decides to add something new to Nate's Notes going forward... 1:08- Nate's new furry family member 3:48- The smells we love 8:26- Dave's unnecessary testosterone update 9:14- House husbands- today's unsung heroes 13:23- A skeptic goes holistic 19:00- Game of Thrones: a post-mortem 28:55- Nate's Notes (Peel Sessions, and their namesake) VISIT OUR PARTNERS -Hemp Bombs for a variety of CBD products use code: sellingout for 15% off! hempbombs.pxf.io/O9qXK -Northland Vapor for all of your vaping needs use code: sellingout19 for 19% off! www.northlandvapor.com -Bio Bidet has an assortment of add-ons to give you the best bathroom experience use code: sellingout for 10% off! www.biobidet.com -Spunk Lube amazing sex is just a squirt away with the best lubricant on the market Buy three get one free! www.spunklube.com FOLLOW SELLING OUT ON TWITTER: @sellingoutshow FB: @sellingoutshow1 EMAIL: sellingoutshow@gmail.com LEAVE A VOICEMAIL: 774-701-1993

Welcome to the show with ex-Peel Session stars The Suncharms. Luckily for us the band has reformed following their split up in the '90s and are currently recording new material. There is an LP in the wings from The Suncharms. The band has been in touch and we are certainly looking forward to their upcoming release. Read on to discover more about the band and what to expect from them in the future. Also in the show we have Richard's father drop in on the studio and he stays for the entire show! Such is Old Man's musical taste that he offers a few nuggets of wisdom on the tracks in today's show. However, it's not all beer and skittles. After playing the Eastern European classic from A Hawk and A Hacksaw, he cites it obvious middle Eastern influences and then rambles on about Kashmir for a bit. Did you listen in Geography lessons all those years ago? And you always said my geography knowledge is appalling! We are always on the lookout for suggestions from you, our listeners. The Suncharms - straight out of Sheffield FTBOTRB's impression of The Suncharms Thanks to Marcus of the band for getting in touch with us here at Record Box HQ. We loved The Suncharms here, their musical innocence and melodies hark back to an era when flares were back in fashion. And people wore elephant leg jeans - remember those? A time when we all had floppy bangs of hair and wore long sleeve tee's printed all over with flowers. We all shopped at Affleck's Palace and spent embarrassing amounts of time in Vinyl Exchange. Janglie indie pop at its best describes The Suncharms brilliantly. It's an authentic sound and one we are hoping they are going to be able to replicate on their upcoming debut album release. As told by Slumberland Records Sheffield's The Suncharms formed in 1989, inspired by the flourishing indiepop scene. Also by the sonic experimentation welling-up around them that would soon come to be known as shoegaze. Following initial garage rehearsals the band soon found themselves supporting indiepop legends such as The Brilliant Corners, St Christopher, The Orchids and The Television Personalities. By 1990 the first Suncharms demo tape had secured support slots with emerging Shoegaze bands such as Cranes, Catherine Wheel and Curve which brought the attention of Wilde Club records and by June 1991 the first EP was released to favorable reviews, reaching a fairly respectable No.23 in the UK indie charts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZXXSksKG8A&feature=youtu.be In November 1991 the excellent second EP Tranquil Day was released, which led to a Peel session in April 1992. The Slumberland Records crew LOVED those two EPs. They had all the guitar overload we craved, but wrapped around some unusually crafty pop tunes. Less ethereal or abstract than a lot of shoegaze, accurate reference points might include early Ride or The Boo Radleys. We first approached the band about the possibility of releasing something way back in 1992. Sadly the familiar scenario of band members lives going in different directions began to hamper progress so a release never materialised. In April 1993 The Suncharms played the last gig of their initial phase. Life after the split Over the intervening years The Suncharms name was kept alive by a small group of indie enthusiasts, websites, online radio stations and bloggers. In 2014 Richard met Roque Ruiz of Cloudberry Rec...

The Very Things special with The Shend in conversation. When The Cravats split up in 1982, guitarist Robin Raymond (aka Robin R. Dalloway) and bassist/singer The Shend (aka Chris Shendo, born Chris Harz) formed The Very Things, recruiting drummer Gordon Disneytime (aka Robin Holland), bassist Jim Davis (guitarist with Redditch band CKV) for the first live gigs, followed by bassist Steven Burrows (aka Fudger O'Mad or Budge), who is band mate of And Also The Trees. The band also originally had a horn section of Vincent Johnson, John Graham, Robert Holland, and Paul Green. Debut single "The Gong Man" was released on Crass's label in November 1983, with "The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes" following in June 1984, now signed to Reflex Records. A short film was made based on the latter for Channel 4's The Tube. The band's debut album was released in August 1984, after which the band was trimmed to the core trio. Several singles and EPs followed over the next few years, although a cover of R. Dean Taylor's "There's a Ghost In My House" was withdrawn in 1987 due to The Fall's version appearing at the same time.[2] By 1988 the band had split up, although they had recorded enough material for an album release on One Little Indian, the Motown-influenced Motortown. The original albums, along with a collection of non-album tracks, were reissued by Fire Records in 1994. The Very Things recorded two Peel Sessions, in 1983 and 1987, and two tracks, "The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes" and "This Is Motortown" featured in the Festive Fifty. The Shend formed a new band, Grimetime, and has since gone on to an acting career, appearing in television series including EastEnders, Red Dwarf, The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and Torchwood.
The Screaming Blue Messiahs special with Kenny Harris in conversation The Screaming Blue Messiahs were a rock band, formed in 1983 in London by guitarist and singer Bill Carter, bass player and backing singer Chris Thompson and drummer Kenny Harris. The group emerged in the wake of the pub rock and punk scenes that had been very predominant on the UK capital's live music circuit during the late '70s/ early '80s. The band, a classic power trio, was active between 1983 and 1990 and released three major label LPs. They toured extensively throughout Europe, North America and Australasia, garnering wide critical acclaim for their aggressive blend of rhythm and blues, punk and rockabilly. Before founding the Screaming Blue Messiahs, its three members had played together as The Small Brothers. Thompson and Carter had been part of the Captain Beefheart-influenced band Motor Boys Motor; together with Tony Moon on vocals, they recorded several tracks under that name on 24 August 1981 for John Peel's show on BBC Radio 1 and released a self-titled album. Initially, after Harris joined Carter and Thompson, the band briefly continued to perform under the name 'Motor Boys Motor'. According to Carter, the final name was chosen upon the suggestion of Ace/Big Beat's Ted Caroll, who was concerned that the band's initial proposal of 'The Blues Messiahs' sounded too pub rock. Carter employed a rhythmic, blues-influenced, feedback-laden guitar style, using mainly Fender Telecaster guitars together with two combo amps: a Mesa Boogie and an HH outfitted with Gauss speakers. For his occasional forays into slide, he favoured 'the mike stand, or whatever is handy',[4] and that he only used open tunings 'when the strings go open by accident'. Featuring a sound described as "rockabilly from hell" and a strong passion for Americana, cars, guns, aeroplanes and broadcast evangelism, the group released the mini-album Good and Gone on Big Beat Records. Its six songs, which had been selected from eleven songs recorded in spring 1984 with producer Vic Maile during a session at Elephant Studios in Wapping, London, included a version of Hank Williams' "You're Gonna Change". Upon its release, the EP entered the top twenty in the UK independent record chart, where it remained for six months. The Screaming Blue Messiahs played their first official gig at 'Downstairs at the Clarendon', Hammersmith, London on 11 June 1984. On 24 July 1984, they performed the songs "Good And Gone", "Someone To Talk To", "Tracking The Dog" and "Let's Go Down to the Woods And Pray" during their first recorded session for the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1. Broadcast on 2 August, the session proved so popular that it resulted in two BBC releases, one a 4-track 12" and a later inclusion of 'Good And Gone' on an album sampler of Peel Sessions. In December of the same year, The Screaming Blue Messiahs appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC, playing two live songs: "Let's Go Down to the Woods And Pray" and "Good And Gone", and then undertook a short tour of the Netherlands.
Damon Krukowski in conversation talking about life in music, Galaxie 500, Billy Krammer and much much more Guitarist Dean Wareham, drummer Damon Krukowski and bassist Naomi Yang had met at the Dalton School in New York City in 1981, but began playing together during their time as students at Harvard University. Wareham and Krukowski had formed a series of punk-influenced student bands, before Wareham returned to New York. When he returned in 1987 he and Krukowski formed a new band, with Yang joining the group on bass guitar, the new group deciding on the name Galaxie 500, after a friend's car, a Ford Galaxie 500. Listening is a crucial part of our ability to communicate and succeed. It affects how well we sell and persuade, build and maintain relationships, teach and manage, and appreciate and understand. Our business and personal lives are often determined by it.However, listening is not a natural skill and unfortunately, it is one that we are in danger of losing. The result of this is a restricted ability to communicate and engage. We are losing our listening. We spend roughly 60 percent of our communication time listening, but we're not very good at it. We retain just 25 percent of what we hear. Now -- not you, not this talk, but that is generally true.Julian Treasure is a sound and communication expert. Welcome to another episode with 2 new music tracks from The Wedding Present and Black Belt Eagle Scout and the quiet beautiful Antony and The Johnsons. Like what you hear? Why not suggest some of your favourite music for us to play on the show here? Track Listing Kennedy The Wedding Present Ghosts Made in Heights Margate Sports Team Soft Stud Black Belt Eagle Scout Fistful of Love Antony & The Johnsons Hannah Ray La Montagne Brassneck The Wedding Present The Wedding Present – Bizarro Another great bookend from way in the North with anger management candidates The Wedding Present, fronted by mathematician David Gedge. I've long been a fan of the album Bizarro from my younger days, and I think it still sounds fresh today. Above all, it won Tobin's approval. Gedge has been prolific in output since the band's first LP, George Best. His solo works, instrumental material and the quite frankly weird Ukrainski Vistupi V Johna Peel. This was a mix of Peel Sessions and Ukrainian folk tunes inspired by the guitarist's Ukrainian father. The "Weddoes" latest release (at time or writing) is the 2017 Home Internationals EP. The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock n Roll era. You may dispute this, but I'm right and you're wrong – John Peel Fistful of Love from Antony & The Johnsons was very well received on the show. Front of the stage is Anohni, formerly Antony Hegarty, hailing from England but now firmly resident in the US after moving to the US (San Francisco Bay Area) with her parents at the age of 10 years old. What happened next to Anohni? Nine years later she relocated to the other side of the US and enrolled in the Experimental Theater Wing of the New York University. After forming Antony and The Johnsons with a mixed bag of musicians they went on to gain success with the Mercury Music Prize winning album I Am a Bird Now in 2005 as Tobin mentioned in the show. This is actually my favourite track in this episode of the show. There can't be many music fans who haven't heard Ray LaMontagne's Trouble album, it's a treasure, along with a lot of his wider body of work. Sadly, I believe he has either already or will shortly be touring for the last time in the UK. I stand to be corrected on this. From the Bottom of the Record Box recommendation: load up some of Ray's albums on your iPhone, purchase a decent bottle of bourbon and enjoy a lost weekend. New Music Selection Released only this month Sports Team's humorous and punchy single Margate hooked us from the start. The slight Jagger-esque vocals and mannerisms on the accompanying video are both comedic and authentic. There are echoes of The Velvet Underground in here, along with Psychedelic Furs and Television as we eluded to on the show. For me, this track was reminiscent of Television's 1977 track Venus, albeit more aggressive and arresting. One thing's for sure, it sums up British seaside resorts, and Margate is no different. We will definitely be keeping an eye on Sports Team for further releases.

Set your dials to the Third Men Podcast, because this week we're being taken over by the most notorious radio pirate of them all - John Peel! When British DJ and all-around music tastemaker John Peel discovered The White Stripes debut album on a trip to the Netherlands, both Peel and the Stripes would never again be the same. For Jack and Meg, John gave them crucial exposure and a solid gold endorsement right as their careers were truly taking off. In Jack, John gained a kindred spirit and a renewed sense of hope for music like he hadn't experienced since the dawn of punk so many years prior. In this episode we cover it all, exploring Peel's life and just what made him such a quintessential ingredient in not just english music culture, but the broader musical consciousness of the world. Plus, third man Colin White of Joe Symes and the Loving Kind shares with us his own musical origins, how playing drums in Liverpool brought him to the world stage, and what experiencing the "Peel Effect" first hand was like. Hamish and Nico are both prrretty bummed with the election result, but we strive to help you get through your pain. We talk a little about what happened before delving into a lack of news and a terrible game. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a very poor man's Titanfall 2 Hamish gushes about Bloodborne's sound design Nico bought way more Game Fuel than he needed because he wanted Titanfall 2 codes but didn't get them Black Ops 2 had some... surprising moments Avenged Sevenfold is a bad band for bad people More games need to shove brands in our faces Sleeping Dogs is still one of the best games of the last few years PS4 Pro is nearly out and guess what - increased resolution Mass Effect: Andromeda looks like Mass Effect How are we still talking about No Man's Sky? How are we STILL talking about Mafia III?! WHO THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO SEPARATE COD: IW PLAYERS ON STEAM/WINDOWS STORE?! WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING TO VIDEO GAMES SOCIAL MEDIA?!?! FOUR FUCKING HOURS?!?!? Also, incase you're wondering, the intro song is Dominator by Killing Joke (specifically the Peel Sessions version). Thought it was fitting given the situation. In this special spunk-o-matic, mega-huge pod, we offer a careful study of the lies of the current US Prez and his pals as they comment on spying, we look at breaking stories that refute their claims, and look at the unconstitutionality of FISA courts. We also look at former NSA, CIA head Michael Hayden, the number of innocent people killed by US drones in Yemen over the past two weeks, and the latest on the NYC "Stop and Frisk" program. We talk to the mighty Furb, creator of www.freedombookclub.com, about all this and new information on a lawsuit against Monsanto! A tonne of information, pertinent and historically accurate. Plus music by Witch "Seer", Suicidal tendencies "Institutionalized", The Damned "Plan 9, Channel 7", The Prodigy "Spitfire", and the Psychedelic Furs "Soap Commercial" (live, from their Peel Sessions)... I first put this mix together a few years ago when we were recording The Crabapples to show the engineer what kind of sounds we were looking for. I've wound up listening to it quite a bit since then though, and I think this batch of songs pretty well represents a lot of what inspired me to start the label and make music myself: smart, succinct tunes with equal measures of noise and melody, played with maximum passion and minimum nonsense. 1. The Mekons - Where Were You? (7", Fast Product, 1978) - A spiteful punk rock love song from these Leeds legends. I'll be a heretic and say they're not my favorite band of all time, but the two singles on Fast always do the business for me.2. Subway Sect - Nobody's Scared (7", Braik, 1978) - Abrasively amazing artifact is the only real document of Subway Sect's first incarnation. I can only imagine how great an album they could have made at the time, and the recently released 1978 album of re-recorded 1977/1978 tracks only leaves me wanting the real thing.3. Swell Maps - Another Song (A Trip To Marineville LP, Rough Trade, 1979) - The Swell Maps kind of epitomize for me the prolific experimentation and restless energy of the early Rough Trade days. A total, glorious mess.4. Henry's Dress - Over 21 (7", Slumberland, 1996) - Henry's Dress were my favorite band for years and their records still blow my mind. An amazing mix of a super-catchy song and crazy guitar and bass noise, this song is from a split tour single with Rocketship and might be my favorite Dress moment.5. Blank Students - Background Music (Earcom 1 EP, Fast Product, 1979) - The post-punk DIY explosion was full of bands that made one great record or released one great song, and while I don't know anything about this band, the anonymity of it makes me love it even more.6. Jasmine Minks - What's Happening? (7", Creation, 1985) - Early Minks singles tend to be more modish and 60s sounding, but this single has kind of a spare, minimal punkiness to it that I always really loved. What a tune, what a band.7. Sportique - Definition '79 (Modern Museums 10", Matinée/WIAIWYA, 2002) - Greg Webster and mates delivered three mini-lps and a bunch of singles full of bristly, catchy, immediate punk-pop gems. This song argues for a rebirth of the DIY post-punk spirit of excitement, and I can dig it.8. Groove Farm - Just A Silly Phase I'm Going Through (Airspace II LP, Breaking Down, 1990) - Breathlessly fast guitar playing, shout-along vocals and quality indie horns. What's not to like?9. This Poison! - Poised Over The Pause Button (7", Reception, 1987) - The two This Poison! singles are just about legendary around my house. Being from Leeds and on Reception there is definitely a kinship to The Wedding Present, but TP! had incredible songs and a sound all their own. The comp on Egg is 100% essential.10. The Charlottes - Are You Happy Now? (7", Molesworth, 1988) - The Charlottes went on to some amount of shoegaze-pop fame on Subway and later Cherry Red, but this slice of rushing girlie pop is my favorite record of theirs. Dig the wild drumming!11. Mousefolk - Crazy Mixed-Up Kid (Songs Of Love And Hate EP, Teatime, 1989) - One of my absolute favorite post-C86 bands. Mousefolk were mainstays of the late 80s pop tape comp scene, and their is a sweet, homemade sincerity to their sound that elevates it way beyond most of the twee-by-the-numbers bands of that era. Plus, they rocked.12. Bubblegum Splash - Plastic Smile (Splashdown EP, Subway, 1987) - Only a few comp tracks and one single from this group, but what a single it is. Super-simple songs, basic buzzsaw guitar and, shall we say, untutored vocals. A great example of punk's "anyone can do it" ethic at the heart of C86 pop.13. The Slits - Shoplifting (Peel Session, 1977) - As much as I like Cut, there's something amazingly raw about the earlier '77-era tracks captured in their Peel Sessions and the untitled Rough Trade LP that really gets me going. "Let's Do The Split" is way up there as well - when the Slits played SF last year they had so much fun with it they played it twice. Pretty cool.14. The Killjoys - Johnny Won't Get To Heaven (7", Raw, 1977) - Nasty, bludgeoning '77 punk from the Midlands, featuring a young and apparently very angry Kevin Rowland. Pure amphetamine energy, and what a punchy sound. Classic single.15. Action Painting! - Laying The Lodger (7", Damaged Goods, 1994) - I have a very soft spot for Action Painting!'s noisier songs, and as much as I love "Classical Music" and "Collapsing Cloud," it's the out-of-control vibe of this single that marks it as my favorite. Magic.16. Boyracer - Spiteful Punk Rock Song #2 (AUL 36X EP, Slumberland, 1994) - One of my favorite bands of all time, so many sound to pick from how would you choose? This was the band's first Slumberland release and I have very fond memories of hearing them play it live and pogo-ing like a madman with A Turntable Friend's Ulrich.17. Buzzcocks - Breakdown (Spiral Scratch EP, New Hormones, 1977) - One could almost say the record that started it all. One of the first independently-released punk singles, and it just happens to be one of the best, IMHO. Howard Devoto's sneered, bored vocals are a perfect complement to the sawed-off, strangled guitar and tumbling drums. Buzzcocks are of course one of the greatest bands ever, but I'm surprised how many people I talk to aren't down with this record. Squares.18. Josef K - Sorry For Laughing (7", Crepuscule/Postcard, 1981) - The Postcard label remains a huge inspiration for me, and the alienated strum of this single is one of my faves. Josef K's blend of dark, angular post-punk and pop always surprises and delights, and I just love the trebly, scratchy guitar sound.19. Fire Engines - Lubricate Your Living Room (Lubricate Your Living Room LP, Fast Product, 1980) - What is it about Scotland? So much amazing music, and the Fire Engines post-Television/Velvet Underground guitar cacophony stands tall with the best. "Lubricate Your Living Room" was the theme to my radio show on WMUC back in the mid-80s, and even though I've listened to it about a thousand times I never tire of it. If you don't have their records already, the Fire Engines comp that Acute put out in 2007 is not to be missed.
