Send us a textWelcome to a Christmas like no other, where I wrestle with the absurdities of modern finance and the strange beauty of human existence. From the quiet shores of St. Bart's, and it's a quiet one for sure, Christmas morning and i'm about to post this to you all. There's a cool macro economic essay in there somewhere. I wanted to get something, anything out there for this holiday season; I hope you can forgive the heavy breathing…This is a meditation on what it means to live in a world where financial systems are warped mirrors of reality. Why does the U.S. economy continue to thrive against the odds? What does it mean when a stock doubles in a month, only to face existential doubt the next? Are we all, prisoners of a system that was never truly rational to begin with?I reflect on moments from my own career, like the time I wagered against the optimism of Nokia in 1999 or found myself apologizing to a Carphone Warehouse magnate, my words echoing through the Mayfair offices as traders placed bets on how many times I'd say “sorry.” But this episode is mostly about life. About finding meaning in the noise, about letting go of the need for answers, and embracing the simple act of questioning.  So, as 2024 fades into memory, join me in this moment of quiet reflection. Let's step away from the screens, the data, the endless rush to predict the unpredictable. Let's sit with the questions, about markets, about ourselves, and see what they reveal.Because, as I sit here on a stunning Christmas day, staring at the endless blue of the Caribbean Sea, I'm reminded, that you and me, we don't have all the answers. But we've got really good questions. What happens when the Chinese stop buying US risk capital? Does the global stock market music stop? These are THE questions for today. But they're questions worth holding onto as we head into the new year. Answers that will reveal themselves when they're good and damned ready to reveal. So, Good luck, my brothers and sisters. The spirituality of curiosity.I leave it for you to decide.Hugh⬇️ Subscribe on Patreon or Substack for full episodes ⬇️https://www.patreon.com/HughHendryhttps://hughhendry.substack.comhttps://www.instagram.com/hughhendryofficialhttps://blancbleustbarts.comhttps://www.instagram.com/blancbleuofficial⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Leave a five star review and comment on Apple Podcasts!

In this wide-ranging conversation, we explore what has helped Josh achieve senior leadership in different sectors, what it means to make a planned and demonstrable impact as well as how HSBC is changing to a skills-based organisation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Josh has headed up L&D for several large companies including for Warner Music Group and is now VP of People Experience and Insights for HSBC. Take things back to basics and make sure everything you do boosts or at least defends revenue. If something is not working, retire it early. Don´t be afraid to call your own baby ugly. You have to talk in financial terms to be truly relevant.  Little time-saving tweaks make a huge difference. Even saving 30 seconds per day, per employee adds up to a big saving for large companies. HSBC is a skills-based organisation.  Thoroughly read the end-of-year board paper to fully understand the direction the business is heading in. Keep it super simple, if you can´t describe what you're doing to a toddler without them looking confused, don´t do it. BEST MOMENTS 'Just take a step back and ask, what is this doing for the organisation?' 'It´s taking all the stuff that we need them to do and making it frictionless.' 'Never wed yourself to a single way of doing stuff because the world will change around you.' 'You can´t be a one-trick pony, you have to have a whole arsenal of things.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Learning And Development Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-learning-development-podcast/id1466927523 L&D Master Class Series: https://360learning.com/blog/l-and-d-masterclass-home/ Josh Novelle Bio Josh Novelle is VP of People Experience and Insights at HSBC and an internationally recognised specialist in his field, with more than ten years of award-winning corporate experiences to employees. So in the strategy Compass model, I list five stages, the first one being systems, the second being cash...the third one being about advancing or innovating So innovate we would have to be advancing to innovate, the fourth being leadership and culture and the fifth one being personal team Effectiveness. So what systems do you need to be able to enable you to deliver consistency of quality customer experience in quality of product or service output to that customer and  enable you to replicate? Scarlett Moffatt was working at the checkout in Asda when she and he family got the chance to be on Channel 4's Gogglebox. She rapidly became the show's break-out star with her brilliant one-liners. Television fame followed - she co-presented with Ant and Dec, won 2016's I'm A Celebrity and now hosts the official podcast for Rupaul’s Drag Race UK. But with her overnight celebrity also came increased scrutiny and criticism. She joins me to talk about becoming an accidental famous person and dealing with online abuse (she will now reply to trolls with the phone number for the Samaritans). Scarlett also discusses her shifting relationship with body image and her own struggles with anxiety and low self-worth. This is a woman who has worked hard all her life - from her first job at 14, putting sweets into Pic n' Mix to being employed in sales at the Carphone Warehouse. When she went on I'm A Celebrity, she had only just managed to clear her student overdraft. With the fee she was given from that show, Scarlett paid off the mortgage on her parents' house. She talks to me about the value of hard graft, being bullied at school, a bicycle accident that left her with Bell's Palsy and using humour as a defence mechanism. This episode also contains what is quite possibly the greatest Tom Hardy anecdote you will ever hear. Thank you Scarlett, you are an absolute gem. Those school bullies were wrong about you. They always are. * I've written a new book! Failosophy: A Handbook For When Things Go Wrong is out in October. Brendan Roberts founded Aider in 2017 after more than 15 years helping small businesses with their communications and IT needs. Roberts hacked together a specialty voice assistant using off-the-shelf technologies in 2017 to prove that it could help address common problems faced by small businesses. He then launched Aider as a specialty assistant for small business managers more than a year ago in New Zealand and Australia and then in July expanded to North America. Aider helps small businesses by integrating with a variety of third-party solutions they already use today ranging from accounting to inventory and marketing. The assistant makes it easier to access the information in those systems today and soon will also enable the execution of voice-directed actions. The assistant can be accessed via the Aider mobile app or through popular general-purpose assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant. In December, the company closed a seed round of funding which included Coca-Cola's investment arm.  Previously, Brendan was a co-founder of 9 Spokes an IT services company in New Zealand. Before that he spent many years in telecom at Vodaphone in New Zealand and Carphone Warehouse in London. We talk getting started, the role for specialty assistants, build or buy decisions for technology, managing through COVID when you see your customer's revenues fall off a cliff before they do, and more.

Getting the opportunity to reshape a company's tech platform from the ground up is an exciting prospect, but it's also one that brings with it no small amount of challenge. There are many aspects to consider, including infrastructure choices, scalability, maintenance and more, but pull it off and you can revolutionise an organisation's operational capacity. That's exactly the task that Marc Pell was faced with when he started at insurance company TempCover six and a half years ago. Fast-forward to today, and he's leading its technical vision as CTO. In this week's episode, he joins us to explain how he went about reinventing the company's tech stack and the opportunities it has offered.Elsewhere, we look at how COVID-19 has kick-started a remote working revolution, the pending closure of high street institution Carphone Warehouse, and Microsoft's latest developer-friendly acquisition. For links to all the articles we've talked about in this week's episode, head to https://bit.ly/ITPP-Platform.

The high street has been back in the news with M&S and Carphone Warehouse the latest to announce massive store closures, and a survey from Which? revealing the shops we like the least. It doesn't look great for the high street. I now live in a relatively wealthy part of Yorkshire compared to other parts, and there are lots of independent shops and restaurants. But in the three months I've been here we’ve lost the H&M, Byron, Maplin, Game, Thorntons, East, Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, Mulityork, Jamies Italian and some local independents too. What’s the end game? Where I grew up in Kent the nearby towns are essentially just pound shops and charity shops. And why is it happening? Well in this week's episode I've looked at some of the causes - and shared a few things we can do to try to stop the rot. More over at https://becleverwithyourcash.com/cashchats61

This involved the annual operating responsibility for all CPW & TPH businesses in 10 European countries (UK, Spain, France, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland and Belgium). The remit covered 2,400 stores, online and B2B operations. He was also accountable for international growth outside of Europe, including nascent partnerships in India, the Middle East and South America. He has subsequently worked on start-up ventures, including supporting private equity businesses on potential investments. Andrew Pinnington succeeds former CEO, Tom Barr. Mr Barr, who lives in North America, was finding it increasingly difficult to fulfil his obligation to a young family while managing London-based Hailo. Tom Barr has committed to stay with Hailo through the Spring, working alongside Andrew Pinnington to ensure there is a seamless and comprehensive transition. In the last quarter, Hailo saw the strongest sales quarter in the company's history, with double digit month-on-month growth, thereby cementing its position as the leader in European ehail. Ron Zeghibe, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Hailo, said, “Andrew brings the perfect skill set to help us drive Hailo through the next stages of our international growth and development. He understands e-commerce, has great experience of managing a multi-national business through a period of rapid growth and has operated in both large corporates and start-ups.

This issue has been raised by both cnet,http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/vodafone-gets-in-another-fine-mess-over-android-this-time-with-galaxy-s-50000468/) and the register ,(http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/09/21/froyo_updates/)who both have articles written about this update. Love the show and the current line up. I must say it did take me a while to warm up to Andy.... I think this is only because I'm an ex Carphone Warehouse employee, and his bashing of them was difficult to hear. Especially when I gave excellent customer service and product knowledge being a phone geek. It maybe obvious, but not every store is the same..... Any who, I'm over that and now I know more about Andy and his back ground, I really do value his input into most conversations you guys have!Enough ass kissing.... on with my question.I think this one is best answered by Andy, but if any one else can offer an answer I'm all ears.I'm heading off on holiday to Turkey in August. Last holiday we had, we were in a villa where paid to have WiFi there, but that isn't an option to us where we are going. As we progress in this digital age, not to been connected to the digital world is horrid thought. Obviously I could roam on O2 (I'm an iPhone 4 owner) but since I don't have MUG tattooed on my head (and sleep on a bed of money) this really isn't going to be an option for me. There is 5 of us going. Me, the better half, her parents and her brother. 3 of use are iPhone users, and because of this I was thinking that the best solution for us would be some thing like a MiFi portable hotspot with a Turkish data SIM in it. What do you think guys? Would this be the best option?I set about trying to do some research and it seems like there is only two main network providers in Turkey. One is Vodafone. Navigating their website is tough. Even with Google translate. I think there is a good pre pay dongle you can get from them, but they don't seem to list any thing like a MiFi. I was planning to purchase an unlocked MiFi before I went away and get a SIM when I was over there. The question I have, is that how do I know the MiFi will support the Turkish Voda network settings??All seems a little confusing for me, and hard to gather information about foreign countries before you travel. Is there a website out there that offers more in depth advice about this type of question?I'm leaving it a little late because I leave on the 19th of August, but I'd love for any help you can offer, or maybe fellow listeners. Thanks very much for your time guys, and thank you again for the podcast you produce.David King Melayah how do i add people on to my whats app like my BB contacts and Iphone contacts???
