No one ever really talks about how as a woman you go through puberty and then enter your reproductive stage, where if you have the ability to have a child, the physical and emotional changes go well beyond the first 6 weeks post birth. Most commonly in western medicine, we focus on the labour and then the first 6 weeks, but beyond that for the majority, women get left to resume motherhood with little acknowledgment of the biological, hormonal and physical changes that continue to occur to them for years after birthing children. Matrescence is somewhat of a new term that has recently been defined, similarly to adolescence as the physical, psychological and emotional transitions that occur to women for years once they become a mother. In the past the fatigue, the highs and lows, extreme periods, anxiety and so on, all were simmered down to the ripples effects of taking care of your young children. But with the dedicated work of people such as Dr. Oscar Serrallach and Frida Aalgars, it's becoming more commonly understood that far more is happening to you that needs attention and support in the bid to manage the Matrescence stage of life. Dr. Oscar Serrallach is a renowned Doctor that has been a leader in the area of Mothercare for 10 years, writing and publishing world renowned book “The Postnatal Depletion Cure” in a bid to guide women through this previously ignored stage. Frida Aalgars was an established corporate calving out an impressive career for herself but once having children suffered sleep deprivation and burnout, which led her to be a patient of Dr. Serrallach, and in-turn making wholesale changes to assist in living a more balanced and holistic life to manage being a woman who is also a mother, in this new era of parenting, navigating parenting and life, and everything in between. Since then, Frida and Oscar have collaborated in an attempt to combine their expertise and provide women a better chance to manage their well-being, with their wellness brand The Tenth Co. The key to all of this goes back to the essence of being a woman who is also a mother, you can't care for anyone from the place of an empty cup, so prioritising support and your health in today's world is the key to helping manage your wellbeing alongside motherhood. During this episode, Ali gracefully shares with us her experience of losing her own mother to cancer and the impact that this deeply hurtful loss had on the way she mothered without the support of her own mother. She shares that despite the grief & devastation, she felt her mother gifting her the permission to show up in life in ways that matter most to her. Ali takes us through many of the emotions she experienced as her identity unfolded in motherhood, including learning how to take the evolution of being numb in anger, to expressing rage and then equipping herself to express anger in healthy ways and to role model this for her children. Ali is a warm & sensitive soul. I found this conversation so heartwarming. The FTSE 100 got off to a weak start on Friday as a leading Bank of England official said it was too early to declare victory in the battle to tame inflation. The Bank of England's chief economist Huw Pill told the Financial Times that the bank can't afford to relent in its battle against high inflation just because it sees signs of weakening economic activity. In company news, Legal & General Group has agreed a £4.8 billion full buy-in with the Boots Pension Scheme, the UK's largest single transaction of its kind by premium size. Meanwhile, reports say Barclays is working on plans to save as much as £1 billion pounds which could involve cutting as many as 2,000 jobs, mainly in the bank's back office. We've also had results from Mothercare which has predicted more store closures in its franchised stores as it reported a drop in half-year sales as performance in the Middle East remained challenging. During this first birthday edition of the Self Care with Herbs segment, I reflect on the many and varied nourishing conversations I've had with guests over the past 12 months.  I pull out common themes, from the benefits of weaving our self care around the cycles and rhythms within ourselves and the world around us to the way our self care may change depending on the stage of life we find ourselves in.  I reflect on the value of nature connection, and the way that growing herbs can deepen our relationship with the plants. I share how my little herb patch has grown as a direct result of the conversations had during the podcast. I examine the way that existing in our world and the pressures placed on us by our society can be a huge barrier to prioritising ourselves and how even the common definition of self care (as spa treatment or expensive getaway) can make it difficult for many of us. I rejoice in reviewing the many deliciously nourishing self care recipes and rituals shared by guests and share stories of the connections that have been made as a result of the podcast. Undertaking a 4 year Bachelor Naturopathy degree while also birthing and caring for 2 children and coming face to face with ‘mum burnout', inspired her to focus on Women's Health and in particular ‘Mothercare' in her practice… Emma's been practicing as a Naturopath since 2015, and spent 4 years working alongside acclaimed integrative GP Dr Oscar Serrallach, helping mothers rediscover their vitality and manage their health on the other side of birth. As part of her work with Dr Serrallach, Emma contributed a section on diet to his book, ‘The Postnatal Depletion Cure'.  During this episode, we chat about Emma's childhood, her love of helping mum and dad in the garden, spending hours outside, collecting treasures from nature for potions. During our chat, Emma shares how she encourages her clients to prioritise self care above eating well and exercising because when our cups are full, these things come more easily. We chat about the importance of bringing in loved ones so they see the necessity of us taking time for ourselves and can be there to help if needed. And above all, that self care isn't a privilege, it's an essential part of living well, that we know how to nurture and support ourselves.  Emma makes some really good points about being realistic about forming new habits- we talk about how falling off the wagon with a new self care habit doesn't have to be the end of the road and how being aware of this makes the habit easier to maintain. As both a busy Mum and an experienced Women's Health pracitioner, Emma has a lot of practical and simple wisdom to share, there's lots of tips and tricks you'll take away from this chat. In MOTHERCARE, Tillman describes doing what seems impossible: handling her mother as if she were a child and coping with a longtime ambivalence toward her.MOTHERCARE is both a cautionary tale and sympathetic guidance for anyone who suddenly becomes a caregiver. Women from different species, including humans, who had better help and support have better chances of survival. What can we learn from mother nature? Sarah B. Hrdy professor emerita at the University of California Davis, and Associate in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at Harvard talks about her books: Mothers And Others, The Woman That Never Evolved, and Mother Nature.Listen to Greg and Sarah as they discuss allomotherhood and alloparenting, foundational concepts that ensured humans will continue to survive and evolve. As humans, we often neglect the fact that there is so much to learn from mother nature, the animals, and relate them to our society. Tune in to the end and learn how shared care, concern for others, and the intense need to socialize and be cared for became key to human survival. Sarah talks about how these concepts relate and is evident in society and modern issues like daycare, women empowerment, birth control, and familial unit setup. Episode Quotes:On language and grammar pushing the human race forward:“Grammar is really a tool for helping someone else understand what you're saying. Much about humans is about helping others. Understand what we're thinking and feeling.”Why is great daycare important for modern parenting and empowering more women and families?“Even though I think an extended family is often in many ways going to be advantageous over most daycare in the United States. A good daycare is really a gift to mothers and children growing up, and to fathers. But for so long, our debate has been over well, are we going to have Mothercare or daycare? When in fact the debate should have been, how do we make daycare better?” Thoughts on modern housing and architecture:“There's an additional problem which is architecture and the way our housing is designed. Everybody wants to be in these independent houses. I noticed years ago when I was at UC Davis that the graduate students who were living in student housing but had young children were actually better off than the ones who were in their independent apartments.”On how to really empower young women:"We're not providing them with the sex education and birth control they need. To me, this is like sending someone up into an airplane without pressurizing the cabin. It's just wrong. And I'm disgusted that some of the institutions I'm most involved with they put women's career opportunities top of the radar. They really want women to have equal pay and so forth."Show Links:Sarah B. E25 That Great Business Show, Ireland's best business podcast.2.00' A hilarious insight into the first seven years of start-up www.ImpactGumShields.com with former advertising exec James Murphy explaining the highly unusual and very, very painful way he found to attract a million viewers to learn about his patented gum shield. It involves Ian Madigan testing the gum shield, but not where or how you might think! Have a look here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ0BkQCyQTs After 'a mere' three and a half years Impact has finally secured a patent on its software. Next stop the world. To complete his Impact Gum Shield early executive team James explains why 'he'd hire Dan Weiden (creator of Nike 'just do it' strapline) in a heartbeat'.26' The Ward family owned the Mothercare franchise in Ireland for decades but with the collapse of the UK mothership the Irish franchise finally foundered and the family business went down with it. Marketing director Laura Ward was in Mothercare HQ in Watford, UK the day the story broke. She heard not from management, but she saw it on Sky News. She tells That Great Business Show how traumatic that was. Now, the Ward siblings have started again with www.Kaliedy.com - an online version of what they had - but with a greater emphasis on backing small Irish businesses. Laura wants relevant businesses to contact her with a view to a listing. Her 'Hire in Heartbeat' is Chrissy Teigen. She explains how having Chrissie onboard could make her business go global.47' You may think you know the horse business. That is until you listen to Equine MediRecord co-founder Pierce Dargan. He trots us through the worldwide market opportunities for his software, markets that include Sweden where horse trotting is massive (who knew?), New Zealand where bloodstock makes a mark on the country's GDP, Poland - famed for its Winged Hussars. In total he gives 60,000,000 reasons why his TCD Tangent backed business has a massive global opportunity. As well as hiring his grandad, famous industrialist Michael Dargan, in a heartbeat he also wants Andrew Lloyd Webber in his posse. Find out why.1.09' Next time you look at a lamppost, say to yourself, 'there's a business in that'. The same goes for a park bench, a road sign, a telegraph pole. The great news for another TCD Tangent backed company, www.AIMapIT.com is that their very early stage AI company is already getting traction from large enterprises who want to count the 2 million lamp poles in Ireland, or the 5.5 million poles in the UK. Co-founder Julie Connelly says that because it's at such an early stage the business opportunities are only beginning (a Greek company has already come calling). Listen to see if you have a business idea that could you use their business idea. Julie's 'heartbeat hire' is Padraig O'Donoghue of Surecom Technology. The once mighty Mothercare chain has become the latest casualty in the British High Street meltdown which has seen thousands of shops close this year. Use them or lose them The choice is simple. You can either shop in High Street stores or continue to buy from Amazon and see those stores close. Remember that Amazon pays very little tax in the UK compare to the retail sector. Even if we save a few pounds buying online, we will all be losing out in the long run. McDonald’s British-born Chief Executive is pushed out of $12 million job after falling foul of the company’s “non-fraternisation” policy. I guess she’s worth it! Ryanair demonstrate how small additional charges and extras can add up to over £7 million in profits. Think about that for your business. McDonald’s has 38,000 restaurants worldwide, but 93% of them are franchises. In other words, they have used other people’s money to expand their business and control rather than own the multi-billion dollar chain of restaurants. Millions of people, or over 80% of the population, will either retire in poverty or not be able to afford to retire at all. What’s your strategy? You can learn how to acquire income producing assets using other people’s money and other no money down strategies in order to become financially free. Smart investors are using these creative finance, ‘no money down’ tools to build massive property portfolios in a few short years, as their hands are not tied by mortgage lenders and the need to save large deposits and pay higher taxes. High Street Meltdown More Stores Fail By Charles Kelly, Property Solutions Investor, Author of Yes, Money Can Buy You Happiness and creator of Money Tips Podcast. In this episode: The once mighty Mothercare chain has become the latest casualty in the British High Street meltdown which has seen thousands of shops close this year. If you’d like more information on how to acquire wealth building assets using none of your money, email me at Charles@CharlesKelly.netor send me a message through Facebook or my Money Tips Daily community. Not one, not two but three healthy baby boys.Just three weeks ago, Ali Dee joined a very small club of women in Ireland who have given birth to triplets and in this episode she take us through her extra special pregnancy, unexpected labour and life as a mum with 3 premature babies in the NICU.From laughing out loud as she heard that there was not 1, not 2 but 3 heartbeats to having her tears dried in theatre by the most incredible team of midwives, Ali has taken each stage in her stride while leaning on family, friends, the staff in Holles Street and most of all her new support group – other triplet mums. With daughter Georgia now a big sister to Bruce, Lenny and Ted, Ali and Chris having gone from parents of 1 to 4 overnight. And in this episode we celebrate that it's ok to be scared, it's ok to be overwhelmed, it's ok to cry, rant and worry. But that at the end of the day, there is a village of support there for every mum and it's ok to ask for help. And as learn that the triplets were born on a very special date following a miscarriage late last year, this episode is here to remind us all that sometimes there is very little we can control when it comes to motherhood, except taking care of our own wellbeing, finding new levels of strength we never knew we had and a tribe of support. What does the consumer think? What do the models think? Why has the fashion industry evolved so much in other areas apart from maternity? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You have heard of childcare. Even eldercare, but how about Mothercare? My guest today guides new and veteran mothers alike through the best practices to care for themselves as they care for their children. As a new mom, she would have described her entry to motherhood as a failure to thrive. her transition to maternal life was a messy, painful journey. But she found that the birth of a mother deserves to be tended to in much the same way as the birth of a baby, with attention, devotion and the deepest kind of love. This is The Empowered Mama Podcast. Dayna M. Kurtz's Favorite Quote: "In giving birth to our babies, we may find that we give birth to new possibilities within ourselves." Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn If Dayna Kurtz was to get a tattoo with one word that she valued, what would it be? Perhaps the word "Atman," a Sanksrit word meaning "inner self" or "soul." It's a reminder that we are something other than our work, our egos, our bodies. It's easy to get wrapped up in this transient elements, but they are just that--transient--whereas the "atman" is ever-lasting. There's comfort in that.  Links For Dayna Kurtz Website: http://www.daynamkurtz.com/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/daynamkurtzmothermatters/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/daynam.kurtz Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/daynamkurtz The Empowered Mama is part of the Parents On Demand Network. A few products have been designed to help with these things. So, first up…if you wish to use your existing adult bath! You will need something that will assist holding baby in a reclined angle from birth. Plastic or sponge mould that are anti-slip and are contoured for babies, head neck and back!TOP TIP ….you can also block off smaller section of the bath to use – with a BABYDAM…not only will it save your water use but creates a smaller more manageable area to bath baby.- check online!Next the sink…. now we all probably have photos of ourselves as babies in our grandparents sink..i know I do. As we said the sink can be a great option as baby is a great height for parents to handle, only a small volume of water is needed and ideal for those that do not have a bath!Skip hop moby soft spot sink bather £30/€30- soft terry material to cradle baby. Cute whale design, machine washable. Velcro strap to hang dry. February 07, 2019BabyDoc ClubFor the UK and Ireland.Welcome to the BabyDoc Basics podcast on Sleeping solutions!Well, this is a great topic as sleep is on everyone mind when you newborn arrives! But with so many options out there to use and understand its worth investigating the options before and hopefully you and baby can get off on the right foot from day 1!In the studio today is Karen (BabyDoc Club Ireland) and dialling in is Lucy (BabyDoc Club UK).DISCLAIMER – all information is based on the experience of our Mummysavers. No brand or retailer has paid to feature in this – all recommendations are genuine.First up we are going to talk about sleeping bags or gro bags. What are these? So, these are baby sleeping bags…fastened with a zip and clipped at the shoulders. they keep baby warm and covered no matter how much they wriggle! They come in different sizes and TOG ratings from birth to approx. 3 years. Your baby will decide if they like them, especially as they get older and move a lot more! Ikea have these at great value starting at just £7/€8 but baby retailers such as Mothercare. Jo jo manan bebe, the gro-compay all have options ranging from £20/€35.Swaddle blankets next – new-born babies can love the feeling of being all wrapped up like in the womb, with either arms in or out! It can help some babies feel secure and sleep better reducing that startle reflex or involuntary scratching/poking at their faces!!Next are sleeping suits with separate arms and legs for extra mobility or freedom compared to the sleeping bags but all the warmth and convenience! Aimed at slightly older, so maybe when you stop swaddling or baby doesn’t like the bags anymore! Some options will include...The sleep snuggler from jo jo manan bebe £35/€49, Love to dream £45/€63 expensive but has grippy feet for walking around, easy nappy changing access so very handy! Finally, Blankets! If you want to use blankets, then opt for cotton blankets…definitely not the fleecy ones..these get hot quickly! Cotton is much safer to regulate your baby’s temperature and the cellular blankets are perfect for adding/ taking away layers. as little as €9.99 or £8 from Mothercare/ Smyth’s etc or check supermarkets as can be even cheaper!Few safety tips…Always put baby on their back to sleep for every sleep and by everyone caring for your babyMake sure you have the correct room temperature! Gro egg or tommie tippee room/ bath thermometer are between £15 or 20e available widely from supermarkets and the likes of Mothercare or Smyth’s…or check the your baby monitor display – but that’s a whole new podcast!Don’t let baby sleep in sitting devices such as car seats for extended periods – hard to manage but awareness is key– baby bassinets and lay flat prams are great for baby to sleep on the go!Keep your baby cots clear of pillows, toys, bumpers etc and no loose blankets or materials near their face etc. Use fitted sheets on the mattress for ease and less chance of coming loose compared to flat sheets.Place baby with Feet to the end of the bed. DESCRIPTION Welcome to the second part of a two-part special interview with Neville Wright here in Business Mentor Podcast! From rags to riches. We’ve heard this more than a dozen times from the mouths of every entrepreneurs, business leaders and thought leaders. But today, Neville is going to prove to you that it is indeed pretty simple to build a business from absolutely nothing. Listen how he started counting his earnings to zero to millions. Neville shares his personal stories which motivated him to start his business. Discover the rocky start Kiddicare had in the 70s, and how it grew to the multi-million brand it is known for in recent years. KEY TAKEAWAYS Marilyn, Neville's wife, had to face derogatory comments from others about the fact she was working on a building site. In the 70s, it wasn't the "done thing" for women to work on building sites, and Marilyn had had enough. So she told Neville she would run the business instead. Kiddicare began as a second hand shop for babies furniture. But failed to bring in income, and decided to sell it. But on the day theyw ere due to sign over the business, a rep came in and told Neville that with more of a plan, the business would take off. A year later, the business was booming. Neville and Marilyn had so much success, they moved to a much bigger premises time and time again (7 times). The business was originally called Rainbow Warehouse . The Business was renamed Mothercare in the 1980s. You need competitors to move forward Neville explains that the business wouldn't have grown, if his comptitors didn't force him to. Team work makes the dream work. With the right team, Neville made sure that the shop had a tidy exterior, with clean facilities as a bonus to the shop as it gave customers a good impression on top of their excellent service. He had a team of cleaners, litter pickers and gardeners to ensure first impressions were strong to new and returning customers which he believes was vital to the business's success. BEST MOMENTS "We sold it (the business) to a school teacher. And on the day we were going to sign, a rep came in and we said we wouldn't be seeing him anymore, we're going to sell. He said 'why?' and I said 'well there's no passing trade'. He got hold of me by the scruff of the neck, I was about 9 stone, he was about 30 stone, MASSIVE guy, and he dragged me out the shop and pointed me down the road and said 'look! This si the main street in Peterborough!' He swung me round and said 'look Neville, all the poeple coming down this street and they can't see you! It's a terraced house with a flat front and they can't see you because there are shop fronts, houses and offices. And I realsied in that moment that he was passionate about my business." "When you're going up a ladder, you can't jump a rung"   VALUABLE RESOURCES Neville Wright Official Website The Answer is Yes – Now What is the Question? By Neville Wright ABOUT THE HOST Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few. Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success. A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles. After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast. Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast. In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number. Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show. Uncover the secrets behind e-Commerce success! A Behind the scenes look at what makes e-Commerce a success in today's ever-growing and continually changing online world. Learn and apply these lessons, techniques and strategies to your own online business. An interview with businessman Neville Wright. Neville sold Kiddicare business to Morrison’s in 2011 after building it up to be the largest independent nursery business in Europe! KEY TAKEAWAYS Neville left mainstream employment at the age of 24 in 1974. After a few days of going into business he found himself saying yes to every job before even being briefed as to what the job was. That started with property maintenance - window cleaning, painting and decorating, etc. Hard work isn’t something you were afraid of Neville? Do you get a choice? If you want things in life, really want security, money for 40-50 years time and to reach your goals then there really is no other choice. The normal person will work around 8 hours a day to survive, so you’ve only got to do a little bit more. An extra hour in the morning, an extra hour at night. When they have a day off, if they work 5 days then you work 6. What’s your attitude on failure Neville? Failure is never classified as failure, only as a way of learning. In fact, I quite like failure because it gets the adrenaline going. You’ve learned something, then you get back up and succeed. It makes the success taste so much better. I embrace failure! Failure quick is the best thing: It’s better to sell a pram to a couple who are going to go on holiday and use it straight away rather than sell to a couple who are going to store the pram and not use it for a few months. This is because in case the pram is faulty, you can get the feedback sooner and recall the product quicker, saving yourself a lot of time, effort, money and credibility in the long run. Don’t mix your stock up! Goal Setting, how has it helped you achieve what you have achieved, Neville? I say no goals, no life. Easy as that. I wouldn’t know what to say to somebody if they had no goals. I compete against myself, not other people. People thought Kiddicare was in competition with Tesco, Mothercare, John Lewis, etc, but we were actually in competition with ourselves. If I was a customer, what would I want? Every time I would visit a shop, service station, whatever, I would think, “I’m the customer, how are they treating me?” If it wasn’t in a good way, I’d wonder if we did that with our customers. Is my experience in this shop, service station or restaurant the same experience as what customers receive in mine? BEST MOMENTS You can’t be a failure if you’ve got 50 year goals. A lot of people will trip up, fail in the first 6 months and they’ll use that as a crutch for the rest of their lives. With a 50 year goal you don't make mistakes, you learn what not to do in the future! Falling over and getting wet is part of life!If your business hasn’t changed when you come out of it at night to what it was in the morning then somebody is stealing your business and you’re going backwards. We started Kiddicare with second-hand prams. People would also give us second hand clothes, toys, then gradually we had new toys and clothes. We reinvested everything back into the business due to our 50 year goal of being financially secure. If you go into a restaurant and try something, if it’s not brilliant, you say, “Oh, it’s the first week.” You leave it for a few weeks and we’ll go back again. If it’s not brilliant then you could say, “Oh, it’s only a few weeks, they’ve had staff leave..” You give it another go and you decide that it’s shit and you won’t visit again. When a business isn’t customer-centric, that business will go downhill quick! If anyone goes into business thinking they’re going to make a shedload of money, they aint! If anybody goes into business thinking they’re going to take care of their customer, they’ll make millions! VALUABLE RESOURCES Core Fulfilment The Answer Is Yes - Now What’s The Question? Toys R Us and Maplin were sunk this week, investors are nervously watching Carpetright and Mothercare, and restaurants from Jamie Oliver’s, to Byron, and now Prezzo are closing their doors. This week’s shop closures could see more than 5,000 jobs lost. It looks like a slow motion crash on the High Street. But at the same time the economy is doing okay, and sales in the housing market are reasonably buoyant, so why the trouble? In this week’s podcast, Simon Lambert, Georgie Frost and Rachel Rickard Straus take a look at Britain’s high street woes and whether it is company debt, consumer confidence, overexpansion gone wrong, or a failure to keep up with the times that is sinking well-known names.
