Mitchell said while the public is aware of the role of wood construction in prefabricated structures the industry has matured into mass timber, panelization and volumetric modular construction, and that these practices can help address a growing labour shortage. In this special guest episode I speak with one of my oldest friends in the industry. A Director of Eurban located in the UK and one of the hardest people I know who works around the world.  Philipp  Zumbrunnen was born in Switzerland, training first as a carpenter and foreman and then as a Project Manager for a Zurich-based Architectural office specialising in timber buildings. Philipp then studied at Bern University of Applied Science, Architecture, Wood & Civil Engineering in Biel, qualifying as a timber Structural Engineer in 2007. Sandra Lupien is passionate about the potential of mass timber. As Director of MassTimber at Michigan State University in Lansing, a program focused on outreach, research and education, she is working to advance mass timber construction and manufacturing in the state of Michigan.  Sandra originally came to mass timber after exploring possible uses for wood ravaged by a beetle infestation, the result of years of drought in California. In this special guest episode I speak with Sandra Lupien, who is the Director of MassTimber@MSU, a program at Michigan State University that harnesses outreach, communications, research, education, and partnerships to advance mass timber construction and manufacture in Michigan and the surrounding region. Lopez talked about the UBC Embodied Carbon Pilot program, a multi-year research study on the practice of conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) to quantify embodied carbon emissions from Building materials. She also explained the practice of whole-building LCA, where the entire building is considered holistically in an LCA exercise. Lopez also addressed the learning opportunities for practitioners stemming from the pilot, the role of mass-timber and explained strategies to reduce embodied carbon in buildings.
