The sustainable construction revolution continues to gather momentum, with mass timber leading the charge toward a greener built environment. Fresh research from Edinburgh Napier University confirms what many in the industry have long championed – mass timber buildings produce 50% less carbon emissions than conventional construction methods, easily exceeding RIBA's 2025 targets for whole-life carbon performance.Texas architecture firm Corrigan has stepped up with a game-changing sustainability calculator specifically designed for mass timber projects. This innovative tool helps architects accurately estimate biogenic carbon emissions, providing crucial data for environmentally conscious design decisions. Meanwhile, in Toronto, an ambitious new residential tower is set to demonstrate the remarkable efficiency of prefabricated timber construction. The 230 Royal York project will rise approximately 30 metres in a mere 90 days – a testament to how advanced timber engineering is transforming construction timelines. The creative potential of engineered timber continues to evolve in spectacular ways. We revisit the stunning Shigeru Ban-designed Swatch headquarters with its 4,600 unique glulam elements forming a sinuous, organic structure that defies conventional expectations of timber architecture. Equally impressive is the floating groin vault ceiling created by University of Bath researchers using just four large CLT panels – showcasing how mass timber can achieve complex architectural forms previously considered impossible with wood. Don't forget to check our LinkedIn feed for images of these remarkable projects and stay tuned for next week's announcement about the Build the Impossible Rothoblast competition for 2025!Send us a textSupport the show

Send us a textWhat happens when you build an entire house from just one material? We explore the revolutionary "everything house" concept, inspired by architectural visionaries like Robert Bruno, Tadao Ando, and Tom Kundig. This episode takes you on an imaginative journey through the possibilities and challenges of constructing homes from singular materials like wood and concrete. We question the marriage of aesthetics and functionality in architecture and reflect on the profound impact such designs have on our daily lives.Be inspired by the unexpected as we humorously consider a house made entirely of plasterboard and marvel at Shigeru Ban's ingenious use of cardboard. Discover the magic that unfolds when architects push a design concept to its fullest, as seen in the ice hotel where every element is sculpted from ice. We delve into the importance of bold colour choices and materiality, highlighting the creative courage required to challenge conventional design norms and realise truly unique architectural masterpieces. The debate surrounding architectural ornamentation resurfaces as we explore the tension between modernist minimalism and ornate classical styles. Are we missing something by shunning decorative elements in contemporary design? As we reflect on projects that successfully blend ornamentation with modern aesthetics, we invite listeners to reconsider the role of decorative features in enhancing a building's unity and rhythm. Join us in celebrating the artistry and innovation that can emerge when architects dare to push beyond traditional boundaries.Chapters:0:13 - Exploring the Everything House Concept14:35 - The Impact of Architectural Design18:18 - The Art of Process-Based Design33:18 - Pushing Architectural Boundaries46:19 - The Debate on Decorative ElementsFollow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram. If you wish to contact us hit our DMs or email us on info@designprinciplespod.com

Shigeru Ban is a Pritzker Prize winning architect and humanitarian. Ban has developed a unique style known for its blend of traditional Japanese architecture with elements of American Modernism. One of Ban's notable achievements is his pioneering work in using recycled materials, particularly paper tubes, as building components. He believes that architecture should serve the needs of society, especially in times of crisis. Notable projects include the Paper Dome in Japan, which provided temporary housing after an earthquake, the Cardboard Cathedral in New Zealand, Centre Pompidou-Metz in France, the Japan Pavilion Expo 2000 in Germany, and the Aspen Art Museum. Ban's architectural practice showcases a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, and environmental consciousness.Ban and Zuckerman discuss humanitarian architecture, using wood, escaping from the influences of our teachers, inside and outside, experience sequencing, looking for problems to solve by design, form finding, not being about style, and humbleness!

I talked with Shigeru Ban about disaster relief projects, emergency architecture and paper as a building material. Shigeru Ban is a Japanese, Pritzker-winning architect with world-wide experience and recognition. He was born in Tokyo and after studying architecture in Los Angeles and in Cooper Union School in New York, he opened his office in Tokyo, then in Paris and New York. He has designed projects worldwide from private houses, exhibitions, pavilions to offices or large scale museums. He is known for his innovative work with paper as a building material, particularly recycled cardboard tubes used to quickly and efficiently accommodate disaster victims. Societal contribution and humanitarian work is a big part of his profession. His ideas for cheap, flexible, easy to build, durable and safe shelters keep helping the refugees and victims of natural disasters around the world. He has established the NGO Voluntary Architects' Network (VAN) to start disaster relief activities, providing assistance in Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, China, Italy, Haiti, Japan, Ukraine and many more. In this conversation I'm asking him: What are the most crucial aspects when it comes to designing an emergency shelter? What is the main purpose of disaster relief projects? What are the advantages of using paper or cardboard tubes as a building material? How do you perceive temporary and permanence in architecture? What is the goal of Voluntary Architects' Network? How did the Paper Partition System help Ukrainian refugees? Is the contribution to society the biggest value the architect can give? Direct answers, rigid conclusions and a very humble and clear work approach. Enjoy the podcast! W ramach studiów Monika Rygier wraz z innymi architektkami - Ewą Grządką i Zuzanną Słabik stworzyły katalog prezentujący przykładowe istniejące projekty architektury interwencyjnej - KURS - Katalog Uniwersalnych Rozwiązań Schronienia. In this episode of the alternative design podcast, we're talking about the world's forgotten victims, also known as climate refugees. There will be massive amounts of people who will be forced to move their home, their family, and their community to a safer location due to climate change. Some of them will have the choice. Others won't. But what we need are alternative design solutions like floating cities and paper partition shelters that will offer them a place to belong. We're chatting with Pritzker Prize winning architect, Shigeru Ban, Chief Engineer at Oceanix, Matteo Pietrobelli, and Senior Fellow at the Sustainability Innovation Lab at Colorado Boulder, Gunars Platais. The story of Ioane Teiotia was told based on the facts presented by these news sources.Foreign PolicyBBC World NewsBBC World NewsBBC World NewsFor more information on Oceanix, check out this linkTo Donate to Shigeru Ban, check out this link at the bottom of the page.

Kai Strehlke joined Lehmann Timber Code AG in 2015 where he began working on the interface between digital data and CNC manufacturing of large scale timber structures. In 2019 Kai presented a timber sculpture in the municipality of Urbach, the 14-metre-high Urbach Tower whose timber panels took on their striking form themselves. Kai was also instrumental in working on the Swatch headquarters in Biel. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. With the aid of parametric planning and highly precise production, logistics and installation, the spectacular Cambridge Mosque was delivered. The mosque also comprises a café, two apartments and gardens. The architectural concept was developed by London-based firm Marks Barfield Architects. In this episode, I talk to Kai about timber forms, glue types, the use of the natural torsion in the timber to allow the structure to take on a life of their own.
