The South African Police Services are investigating the death of a 4 month old at the Happy Owls Day Care Centre in Boksburg. The creche is reportedly not forthcoming as to what really happened, only saying they realized that the baby wasn't breathing when it was time to change nappies. The Health Minister is being called on to protect Ennistymon's two pharmacies from closure upon the opening of the town's primary care centre. Minister of State Joe O'Brien confirmed in April that updated submissions would be sought for the long-awaited Ennistymon Primary Care Centre before the end of June - after which point the project would progress through the review, planning and construction stages. There are currently 13 primary care centres in the Midwest - many of which contain in-house pharmacies. Addressing the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly in the Seanad, Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway says there are legitimate concerns that the viability of the town's existing businesses could be threatened by the new facility.

This is a very special week for Clarecastle Day Care Centre. The centre, located in the village of Clarecastle, offers its elderly clients a program of social engagement and activities in a safe, supportive and friendly environment under the supervision of a team of fully trained and experienced staff who are on hand to assist with any medical concerns or support clients may require. The Government has expressed its intention to proceed with the delivery of a primary care centre in Ennistymon in the coming months. Although four primary care centres were promised for Clare in 2021, the Station Road facility in Ennis is the only which has come to fruition so far. There are currently 13 primary care centres across the Midwest and the Government has recently conducted a review of the delivery model for such facilities. Addressing Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway in the Seanad, Minister of State Joe O'Brien says submissions for the Ennistymon facility will be sought between now and June after which point the project will move to the next stage.

The actor was found dead in an apparent suicide after a two-months long high-profile investigation into his alleged misuse of drugs. Synopsis: Each month, The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood scene. The year of 2023 ended on a shocking and tragic note for the South Korean entertainment industry when actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for playing a wealthy patriarch in the Oscar-winning film Parasite (2019), died of an apparent suicide at the age of 48 on Dec 27, 2023.  Lee was a well-respected and prolific star, both known for his versatile acting and clean, upstanding image. He was married to actress Jeon Hye-jin and shared two sons with her.  But in the two months leading up to his death, Lee suffered a dramatic fall from grace. News broke in October that he was being investigated for allegations of illegal drug use - something heavily stigmatised in South Korea. The scandal, which arose after a bar hostess reportedly claimed that Lee took drugs at her residence, heavily affected Lee's career. Even though investigations were ongoing, Lee was dropped from projects and several of his works which were slated for release were halted.  After several rounds of investigation, including a 19-hour long questioning the weekend before his death, Lee was found dead in his car next to charcoal briquettes.  In this episode of #PopVultures, host Jan Lee recaps Lee's case and discusses the reported blackmail and extortion involved. A MidWest Hospice which provided palliative care to 485 Clare patients last year is set to receive public funding for the first time. From February 2024, Milford Care Centre in Limerick along with Galway Hospice, St.Francis's in Dublin and Cork's Marymount will benefit from an annual reccuring investment of €18.6m to cover payroll and operational costs. Under the plans signed off by Cabinet, staff at the facilities will have the choice to be redesignated as Section 38 workers within the HSE and become public servants. Clare's Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley is confident the development will have major benefits for staff and patients.

Next February, seven students from St. Flannan's College in Ennis will travel to South Africa to volunteer at the Missionvale Care Center in Port Elizabeth. Located on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Missionvale is a township of an estimated 25,000 people. Like much of the African continent, Missionvale has been ravaged by disease, unemployment, and malnutrition. The students of St. Flannan's will help in different units in the care centre, carrying out the imperative daily tasks that have become necessities to everyday survival in Missionvale. There are between 3,000 and 4,000 elephants in captivity in India. Despite their cultural reverence as Lord Ganesha, these elephants are exploited to the core. From being stolen from their wild families as calves, to being beaten to submission and worked tirelessly: begging on streets, giving tourist rides or ‘working' in temples. India's captive elephants do not live happy lives,  mostly their lives are ones of abuse and loneliness.However, all hopes are not lost. Since 1995 Wildlife SOS has been doing a great job in rescuing captive elephants from these horrific conditions, providing both medical and psychological rehabilitation for them at their Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura. Beyond that, they eradicated, over a ten year period, the use of ‘Dancing Bears' for entertainment purposes, also providing them with rehabilitation across their centres.In Episode 5, we speak to Kartick Satyanarayan, one of the co-founders of Wildlife SOS about the plight of India's captive elephants, his vision for Wildlife SOS and also some scary elephant rescue stories!One special elephant at their centre is Pari, a begging elephant that Wildlife SOS rescued in 2022. Hot Cares and Silverstar Casino continue to help deserving members of the community as part of the Silverstar Pays It Forward campaign. This time the story concerns Wings of Inspiration Elderly Care Centre in Randfontein, a non-profit company set up by twin sisters from an underprivileged background, who inherited some money from their late-aunt and decided to put it to good use. Derry is a frustrated city. Too often promises of improvement either come to nothing, or happen too slowly.Anyone who doubts this can consider the regeneration of two major development sites – Ebrington and Fort George. One is now partially occupied, the other largely vacant. This is two decades after the fanfare of their transfer from the Ministry of Defence for the benefit of the city.The former Ebrington Barracks, also known at one time as HMS Sea Eagle, were gifted to the Northern Ireland Executive as part of the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative of May 2002. That is 21 years ago. The other sites handed over alongside Ebrington were Maze/Long Kesh, Crumlin Road Gaol and barracks in Magherafelt and Malone Road in Belfast.Over the years, there has been a lot of criticism of slow progress at Ebrington. But things speeded up recently, with Ebrington Hotel opening in the summer of this year. There are also bars, cafes and offices that opened around the main square. Major new Grade A offices at the adjacent Ebrington Plaza look as if they are near completion.However, there has been tension in the last month over the use of Ebrington's main public space. It appears that no legally binding agreement had been put in place by The Executive Office that clarified arrangements for its use and the potential nuisance to local businesses. This led to The Executive Office making compensation payments of at least £280,000 to businesses. There have been strong criticisms of The Executive Office for its handling of matters.There is sensitivity as a result of the fall-out, which may explain why neither the Ebrington Hotel nor Ebrington Holdings – which has a role in the future development of the area – responded to requests to discuss the situation for the latest Holywell Conversations podcast.Heron Brothers, which are the lead developers of the adjacent new Grade A offices which tower over Ebrington, also did not respond to our question of when the offices will be complete and occupied. The Executive Office chose not to speak to us, or provide a comment.As a result of the row over the use of Ebrington's public space, a resolution was agreed a few days ago by Derry City and Strabane District Council. This “reaffirms commitment to the transfer of Ebrington from TEO to Council as soon as its practically possible”, with the council's officials instructed meanwhile to engage with The Executive Office “so Council can provide the management and oversight function of sustainable and cost-effective events at the Square.”This suggests there may not be a quick resolution to conflicts over future use of the public space, especially as The Executive Office does not appear to have guaranteed that the public space will be available for future events.Despite these issues, Ebrington has become much more vibrant in recent months, since the opening of the hotel. A further development on the site will be the Derry North Atlantic Museum. This was to have been opened in 2016, but there have been delays in obtaining funding approval. Progress has recently accelerated, construction is to begin “as soon as possible”, says the council, and it is hoped it will open in 2025.Our latest podcast interviews owners of two businesses located at Ebrington – James Huey of The Walled City Brewery and Paul Nelis of Challenge Curve – who are both very positive about the location.While there is continued frustration at how slow the regeneration of Ebrington has been, the situation at Fort George is very much worse.Fort George was transferred under a different arrangement to that of Ebrington. It was handed back by the Ministry of Defence to Londonderry Port and Harbour – now known as Foyle Port – and sold to the Department for Social Development, now known as the Department for Communities, in May 2004 for £12m. So that is 19 years ago.Regeneration of Fort George was in part delayed by the need to remediate the site because of oil pollution dating from when it was part of a Naval dockyard and also because of the presence of the Japanese knotweed invasive species.There is just one building so far constructed at Fort George, which is the Catalyst facility for new start and developing technology businesses. It is fully let and a second Catalyst unit is to be built – planning permission has been approved and finance is being arranged.Back in December 2015, the Department for Communities obtained outline planning permission for mixed use development of Fort George. This led to a tender exercise in 2018, seeking expressions of interest for parts of the site. The Western Health Trust obtained approval for its bid.The Department told us that Western Trust will use the site for an “integrated primary, community and acute” centre. It will generate 250 new permanent jobs, as well relocating 450 existing posts. The Western Trust added that it is “working to complete” the outline business case, which is needed to move ahead with procurement for construction.It is unclear why the sale process has taken five years. We submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for copies of correspondence in order to understand this, but our application was rejected on the grounds that it contained thousands of items and was therefore excused from disclosure because of the cost of administration.Western Trust did disclose another important point. “The Department of Communities is working with other stakeholders to progress the development of the remainder of the Fort George site for development including the planning required for access, internal road and car parking infrastructure all of which will meet both the Western Trust and future stakeholder needs.”DfC itself explained: “The Department is currently revising the Masterplan to incorporate the proposed Health and Care Centre on the site. In the longer term, the Department intends to market the remainder of the site.”Western Trust is to occupy a mere 1.7 acres of the total 11 acres. This means that after nearly two decades there remains no clarity on how the majority of the site is to be used. Nor is the road infrastructure in place to support a major development.The latest Holywell Conversations podcast considers the regeneration of the two sites. It's claimed s a new primary care centre mooted for Sixmilebridge will play a significant role in reducing overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. The HSE has confirmed it's seeking expressions of interest from third parties to provide the new facility in the town. When operational, the centre will deliver a wide array of services including Public Health Nursing, Dietetics, Speech and Language Therapy and Physiotherapy. The HSE is hoping to progress to the priced offer stage of the project in the coming months, and Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan believes the new centre is essential to cater for the region's growing population.

Recent data from non-profit suicide prevention centre Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) showed that 476 suicide deaths were reported in Singapore in 2022, the highest since 2000. Singapore is a rapidly ageing society, with over 17% of our population being 65 years old and above as of June 2021. As a result, the retirement and re-employment ages for Singapore workers will be raised progressively to 65 and 70 respectively, which will result in an increase in older employees at workplaces over time. How prevalent is ageism in Singapore?  What more can be done to encourage employers to hire older workers? She is an active advocate for hiring seniors in the workforce. She has conducted many training programmes for seniors and employers, focusing on seniors employability and counselling of seniors. A/Prof Ko received her Doctor of Education from the University of Western Australia in 2015, where her research focused on training older adults. She was awarded the thesis prize for Best Piece of Research. She also holds a certificate in Counselling, Clinical Programme, from the Counselling & Care Centre, Singapore (1990). She has published several books including Counselling Older Adults: An Asian Perspective and Gerontological Counselling: An Introductory Handbook. She has served on various national committees, including the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Ageing Population. Heng Chee How Deputy Secretary-General at the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) and Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How is a Deputy Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).  He joined the NTUC in 1995. Within the Labour Movement, he held numerous appointments, including being the Chief Executive Officer of the NTUC Club and the Executive Secretary of numerous key unions.  He has been a member of the NTUC Central Committee since 1997. He advocates on mature workers' issues on various platforms, including tripartite committees on older workers as well as in Parliament.  His work has been instrumental in the passing of legislation to better safeguard retirement re-employment rights of older workers and tripartite guidelines that foster their fair treatment in workplaces. Two families have told CBC that Central Health has notified them of inappropriate photos taken by staff of their loved ones who are residents of the long-term care unit in Baie Verte. Robinson explained the project is not only creating a working model of the hospital and all of its assets in digital form, it will also be a dynamic digital twin which changes along with the physical structure. She added some specialized equipment such as MRI machines has to be “built” in digital form first in order to test whether it will be possible to get it into the building.
