Janine Benyus, the world-renowned “Godmother of Biomimicry,” and her colleagues at Biomimicry 3.8 have been demonstrating what it takes to design human settlements—cities, village, homes, and businesses—that create the same ecological gifts as the wildland next door. We also feature excerpted discussions from advocates like Anne LaForti and Dayna Baumeister, both from Biomimicry 3.8. Learn how biomimicry isn't just about emulating nature's aesthetics but understanding its functional mechanisms for survival and thriving. Unpack the principles of biomimicry, its implications for industries, and the ethical considerations of borrowing from nature's playbook. Janine Beynus's seminal book: Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature defines biomimicry as a "new science that studies nature's models and then imitates or draws inspiration from these designs and processes to solve human problems." Designing, creating, and innovating in a generous and abundant vs extractive way that regenerates and reciprocates life is a fundamental aim of biomimicry. Plans to scrap the requirement for new government buildings to reach a five star sustainability rating are retrograde and will see a race to the bottom according to the Green Building Council. Finance Minister Nicola Willis has announced a raft of rules to be scrapped - including the requirement to pay the living wage to cleaning, security, and catering services to government agencies. She says the changes will make it easier for New Zealand businesses to access government contracts collectively worth $50b a year. Under the proposals, new non-residential government buildings will not have to be built to a five-star rating standard, government agencies will not have to purchase recyclable office supplies, and nor will agencies be required to buy EV or Hybrid vehicles. Andrew Eagles is the Chief Executive of the Green Building Council. Kathryn also speaks with Canterbury sheep farmer, Angela Blair whose petition calling for Government buildings to be fitted out exclusively with wool carpets got 11,000 signatures. She's worried the changes will see cheap synthetic imported carpets favoured instead of wool.

Welcome back to Sustainability Street, our podcast on the intersection of commercial real estate and the world we live in. Last month, I chatted with Elizabeth Beardsley, senior policy counsel for the U.S. Green Building Council, about the state of climate action in the U.S. and globally. Despite concerns that our new president would be less eco-friendly than President Biden, Beardsley said there was optimism that sustainable progress in the U.S. and abroad would continue. Three weeks into Trump administration, that optimism has been rattled. On his day in office, President Trump rescinded Biden-era executive orders that sought to put climate action and environmental justice front and center, he shifted the country away from renewable energy and he froze Congressionally-approved funds from the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Act. He has also taken aim at environmental regulation. For this episode, I discuss the effects of the president's early actions with Ben Evans, Federal legislative director for the U.S. Green Building Council—what they mean for commercial real estate, the nation and the world. *"Shock and awe" comes to sustainability (1:22)*An international retreat (3:59)*The funding freeze and the Inflation Reduction Act (6:47)*Unplugging the electrification push (10:40)*The loss of GSA leadership (12:12)*The shift back to fossil fuels (13:50)*Deregulation concerns (15:40)*The road ahead (19:50)

Green Building Council initierten Systems.

Welcome back to Sustainability Street, our podcast on the intersection of commercial real estate and the world we live in. Happy New Year! On the verge of a new year and a new Federal administration, I interviewed Elizabeth Beardsley, senior policy counsel, for the U.S. Green Building Council, about the state of climate action in the United States and globally. Beardsley had just returned from COP 29, the annual United Nations climate conference, and she generously shared what she heard and saw at the event, where more than 200 countries were represented. The COP is a pretty important meeting. It was at COP 15 in 2016 that the Paris Agreement was formed, and each year the "Conference of the Parties" meets to track progress on limiting global warming and to establish new agreements and targets. According to Beardsley, "the U.S. was there with the message that we've gone way beyond the commitments and promises phase. We're doing this and there's a lot of momentum. So, the intent from all parties is really to keep that momentum up." Here are some of the topics Beardsley and I covered: COP explained (1:32) Moderate optimism and a bigger finance commitment (2:56) At last, rules for carbon credit trading (5:03) Building-specific initiatives (7:10) U.S. sustainability post-Biden (9:52) The regulatory outlook (13:38) AI as solution and stressor (16:50) Beardsley's own near-term outlook (17:50)

In this episode of the REIT Report special series “Building to Zero,” the U.S. Green Building Council's Heather Payson and Wes Sullens share their perspectives on the building sector's sustainability journey and the path forward for decarbonizing commercial real estate. When USGBC was founded over 30 years ago and the first version of LEED was released, it established a clear and understandable framework to measure and define “green buildings.” Today, LEED has become a widely used rating system around the globe and, as a recognized indicator of leadership, has become an indispensable resource for the buildings community at large.“There's just so much going on in this space, and the urgency is greater than ever. We have to balance the urgency of what the market needs with what's possible. While things like policy help establish a floor…. it's become even more challenging to [define] what leadership means in these times,” shares Wes Sullens, LEED Fellow and Director at USGBC. “We use our group of volunteers and experts… that help us write our rating system. It's not something we cook up in a vacuum, the idea is to make sure LEED is that consensus standard for leadership, which I think is a unique place in the market.”

Sure, Jon sells light bulbs, but he also sells safety and risk mitigation. First, by installing the right bulb in the right position, safety is increased, and second, by installing a longer lasting bulb and requiring someone to climb up and change it less often, he is mitigating risk. If you're doing it right, you'll NEVER have OSHA involved. Jon Rud is an accomplished sales executive with over a decade of experience in the electrical and lighting industries. Currently serving as the VP of Sales for the Americas at Dialight, Jon has been with the company since 2012, where he has held various pivotal roles after having started as a regional sales manager. Prior to his current position, he served as the Director of Sales for the Gulf region for seven years and the Global Strategic Accounts Manager for two years. Before joining Dialight, Jon developed his expertise in the electrical industry with business development at Graybar and previous to that served as the Industrial Manager for Border States Electric for three years. A dedicated member of the Green Building Council since 2011, Jon is committed to promoting sustainable building practices and innovative lighting.

Today is a special episode - notes from Athens as well as LEED v5 preview. I talk about the amazing conference I recently attended in late April in Athens, Greece. The great folks that run GBCI Europe, Kay and Nicole Killmann and their entire team do such a great job promoting green buildings, especially programs like LEED, all through Europe. And every Spring, they host a LEED community reunion.   About 400 attendees that really practice green buildings and especially LEED get together in one amazing city in Europe each Spring. This year was Athens, Greece. I had never been to Athens. It was an amazing trip!    Last year was Barcelona, Spain. Two years ago I was in Munich, Germany. I want to tell you a little bit about what I saw, what I heard coming out of this amazing conference. And then one of the big topics of course, was LEED v5.   We wanted to do this special episode and put some links to the latest information on LEED v5 for all of you to make sure you're reading up on it right now.    There was an additional focus on healthy buildings and healthy communities and then really technical sessions on LEED v5. We were fortunate to hear from both Peter Templeton and Melissa Baker that came over from the U.S. Green Building Council to give us the latest information. It was great to see so many friends that practice LEED throughout Europe all in one place. ______________________________________________________ GBCI Europe Circle event  is an annual community reunion which combines the best qualities of a retreat and a conference. It is an energetic space to connect, learn and discover – a blend of familiar faces and important ideas.   LEED unites many who attend – property owners, investors, architects, entrepreneurs, engineers, consultants and more – but experience with LEED is not required, nor is our content exclusively about LEED. We discuss the topics most important to those building green and healthy in Europe, those transforming our built environment for the next generations.   Show Highlights   The event celebrated the growth of LEED in Europe, emphasizing sustainability in existing building real estate through benchmarking. European Green Building trends, programs, future Services and community focus and sustainable design. Introduction to a new platinum certification criteria to boost energy efficiency and renewable energy use while improving performance monitoring across the building lifecycle.  The shift towards emphasizing actual green building performance over design aspects was recognized as a strategic move. Highlighting the focus on LEED v5 and healthy buildings. Overview of the central areas of impact for LEED v5 - decarbonization, quality of life, ecological conservation. LEED v5 Updates Development Areas: Decarbonization, quality of life, ecological conservation Key Changes: Modified scorecards, point weighting Development Cycle: Five-year cycle, update in 2030 Focus: Continuity across building lifecycle, green building performance Certification: New requirements for platinum certification Explanation of LEED's move to a five-year development cycle and continuity across the building lifecycle.   The conference in Athens, Greece was a catalyst for positive change within the green building community, fostering a spirit of innovation and collaboration towards environmental sustainability and green building excellence.     Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. A note to listeners who may be sensitive to the subject matter: This episode contains a brief discussion of suicide risk among construction workers.  The work of decarbonizing our communities and cities has never been more critical than it is today. Countless observers of climate change are warning the world that our window to drastically reduce or eliminate fossil fuel use and avoid 1.5°C or more of global warming is narrowing with each year.  We know that nearly 40% of global emissions come from the construction and operation of buildings. For the last 30 years, the U.S. Green Building Council has been focused on remediating this critical aspect of the global warming picture. Their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system is the world's most widely used framework for green design, augmented by LEED credentialing for professionals in sustainable design, construction, and operations.  The USGBC operates through a network of 75 local chapters nationwide. Last week, six chapters in California announced they are combining their regional expertise and expanding their efforts under one inclusive statewide nonprofit, known as USGBC-California. In this interview, we'll learn more about the goals of the merger, and how the Los Angeles chapter was particularly instrumental in this effort to engage more communities and professionals working toward an energy transition.  Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter and USGBC-California Executive Director Ben Stapleton discuss solutions for decarbonizing the built environment, ideals for the future of city health and design, and how California is currently leading the way in many U.S. climate efforts.  Other articles referenced in this episode:  “Arizona lawmaker calls climate research ‘anti-God,' pushes to ban it at state universities” (The Arizona Republic, March 14, 2024)  “DeSantis bans local governments from protecting workers from heat and limits police oversight boards” (NBC Miami, April 14, 2024)

Kat Klingenberg, executive director and co-founder of the non-profit organization Phius, talks about the history and current state of passive building in this episode of The Future Built Smarter. “Passive building principles are not rocket science,” she says. “We're talking about continuous insulation, airtight construction, no thermal bridging in the envelope, good fenestration components, and minimized mechanical systems. It's all about holistic integrated design, and once that is all implemented correctly, we get the result of super-low energy buildings that are pretty much zero-energy ready.”     Kat also directs the technical and research programs at Phius, which certifies passive buildings and high-performance building products. The organization also has trained more than 5,000 architects, engineers, energy consultants, and builders as Phius Certified Consultants, Builders, and Raters/Verifiers.    Predated by the construction of thousands of passive houses in North America during the 1960s through 1980s and originally modeled off the Passive House Institute of Germany, Phius codified the passive house strategies in the U.S. when the organization was founded in 2003. The principles have evolved over the past two decades and today apply not only to homes but also to new construction and retrofits of all building types, with climate-specific standards for different geographic regions.     Passive building principles are a vital tool in the global decarbonization effort underway in the built environment—so much so that the 2024 USGBC International Greenbuild Conference will include a Phius-exclusive track, pre-conference summit, and pavilion of exhibitors.     “There has been collaboration and friendship between the Green Building Council and Phius for quite a while, and we decided that Phius should have a track within Greenbuild this year,” says Kat. “We call it ‘Phius at Greenbuild.' We hope that we can create a lot of interest in what we do and bring the stakeholders of Greenbuild into the fold and help them with their next challenges.”    The urgent need to decarbonize at light speed, advances in heat pump and envelope technologies, the mastering of air tightness strategies by a growing number of builders, and the expectation that jurisdictions will begin to include Passive Building Certification as part of net-zero stretch codes (Massachusetts has already done so) are all bringing Phius into the spotlight as never before. “It's almost like the perfect storm,” says Kat. “It's super exciting.”    Visit Phius on the web to learn more about the organization and its collaboration with the 2024 USGBC International Greenbuild Conference.    Read about one of IMEG's Phius-certified projects, the net-zero Prairie Trails School in Mount Prospect, IL.

“The march that we have seen in businesses taking on climate commitments has been one of those forcing functions to bring the data related to buildings front and center (because buildings account for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions) ….There is a whole heck of a lot of inefficiency to cut out of those buildings. And so, as we think of the enormity of the climate challenge, buildings are that rare space that actually taking action cash flows is accretive to your bottom line because you're cutting out a whole lot of waste that otherwise there's just a burden on your bottom line.”  Katie McGinty on Electric Ladies Podcast Buildings are 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, so they are paramount to addressing the climate challenge. But how? It's complicated. Buildings are complex ecosystems with tons of regulations to meet because of how central they are to our well-being and safety. Listen to Katie McGinty, Chief Sustainability Officer of Johnson Controls in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson.  Johnson Controls has played a central role managing our workplace environments for over 140 years. You'll hear: The impact of covid on buildings and how that has affected carbon management programs. How buildings are managed and equipped to improve their performance and reduce costs, including by integrating various systems that were previously isolated. How the centrality of the workplace in retaining top talent has affected building infrastructures as much as climate commitments have. The impact of the Infrastructure Investment Act and Inflation Reduction Act Plus, insightful career advice …. “At the end of the day, what matters is relationships. And if you have a choice to produce a good, even if not immaculate PowerPoint or presentation, whatever it is…take a risk of walking it around to a couple of people and say, ‘I'd really love your feedback on this.' Take the time and maybe get out of your comfort zone to build those relationships. The other thing (is)… amplify… Make it a point of saying, ‘Sue just said X, Sue, I actually thought that was pretty interesting. Could you say a few more words about that?'… I think we can help our colleagues come into the game if we reinforce the foot they have put forward and we open the door for them to be able to express themselves more fully.” Katie McGinty on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Lauren Salz, CEO of Sealed, on how heat pumps reduce energy costs and emissions of buildings. Emerging technology and trends that everyone should be applying to their businesses.  Current innovations to help you leverage technology to advance the efficiency of how you do things.  The evolution of LEED to grow and create a renewed focus on health, wellness, and buildings being designed, built and operated to be better for the environment. The crossover and current pathways to combine environmental performance and human performance.  Fundamental values and roles that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. “We really need to kind of go back to our roots. We really need to focus on our local communities. A lot of what we do is try to get buy-in for why it's so important to care for the environment, care about the climate crisis and all these. When you kind of have an introspective and look at the community around everyone, we have to focus on the commonalities. What do we have in common? And I think we all care about our families. We all care about the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, the water that we drink. I think when you look at those fundamental values you can then start caring about why the environment plays a big role in those key things that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. So then we can focus on helping our local communities and get that buy-in from people that may have different opinions from ourselves.” Nick Kassanis   “We've been tackling a lot of these myths and misconceptions, sort of debunking a lot of these LEED myths over the last several years. A lot of people think LEED is design driven, or maybe it's too rigid or it's only a coastal thing. It only shows up in New York and San Francisco. LEED takes too much time. We've even debunked the one about how a lot of people think LEED is only about earning a point for bike racks. An old misconception that's been around a long time. I particularly like the misconception that LEED costs too much. There's a whole lot of emphasis on and studies over many years about the cost of green building and what premiums exist through LEED and through green building projects. And that misconception, that myth just doesn't hold any water anymore.” -Asa Posner     Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. Retrofitting and repurposing existing structures can achieve decarbonisation goals, enhance occupancy, attract investment, and rejuvenate cities – all while reducing environmental impact. No wonder our industry can't stop talking about it.  It no longer makes sense to demolish unoccupied buildings, as it's neither cost-effective nor aligned with our circular economy aspirations. Democracy in a Hotter Time calls for reforming democratic institutions as a prerequisite for avoiding climate chaos and adapting governance to how Earth works as a physical system. To survive in the “long emergency” ahead, we must reform and strengthen democratic institutions, making them assets rather than liabilities. Edited by David W. Orr, this vital collection of essays proposes a new political order that will not only help humanity survive but also enable us to thrive in the transition to a post–fossil fuel world. Orr gathers leading scholars, public intellectuals, and political leaders to address the many problems confronting our current political systems. Few other books have taken a systems view of the effects of a rapidly destabilizing climate on our laws and governance or offered such a diversity of solutions. These thoughtful and incisive essays cover subjects from Constitutional reform to participatory urban design to education; together, they aim to invigorate the conversation about the human future in practical ways that will improve the effectiveness of democratic institutions and lay the foundation for a more durable and just democracy.   Rob Watson  is an international leader in market transformation, circular economy, sustainable materials management, and green buildings. Watson is known as the “Founding Father of LEED.” Under Rob's direction, LEED became the largest and fastest-growing international green building standard. Author Thomas Friedman called Rob "one of the best environmental minds in America." In 2019, Dartmouth Alumni Magazine recognized Mr. Watson as one of the "25 Most Influential Alumni" in the College's 250 year history.   Watson is a Principal with Upland Road, LLC, which develops eco-industrial campuses around a disruptive technology and business model that will revolutionize the global materials management industry by separating, diverting, and recycling up to 95% of municipal mixed waste that is collected in one bin.   Rob is also the Founder and Co-Chair of the SWEEP (Solid Waste Environmental Excellence Performance) Standard, a system of market transformation standards geared to move the waste industry toward sustainability.   Previously, Watson launched ECON Group and EcoTech International to implement cutting edge lifecycle optimized LEED projects in the US and China.   Watson was a Senior Scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) for 21 years and received the 2013 International Conservation Award from the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. In 2011, he was an international Zayed Energy Future Award semi-finalist & was profiled on CNN International. Watson was the first foreigner honored for Green Building Innovation by the Chinese Ministry of Construction in 2005 and received the first lifetime achievement award from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2002.   Mr. Watson is an Adjunct Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and has an MBA from Columbia University and a MS from UC Berkeley. He is married to Green Schools Alliance Founder Margaret Howard Watson and has a 23-year-old son, Max.   Show Highlights Rob Watson, the Founding Father of LEED shares his stories and expertise on making a difference in the industry.  The ability to grasp complex systems, understand how they're put together and how to change them.  The curve balls thrown from the industry and how to adjust your swing to support and create systems that work.  Rob breaks down the SWEEP standard as “LEED for solid waste.” Creating a structure where value is captured by providing: buildings as a service.  The problem of the industry that the USGBC needs to be focusing on to transform and deliver sustainability that has true value.  The development of eco-industrial campuses that recycle 90-95% of everything. Smart centers sustainable materials and advanced recovery technology. Be part of “Humanity Inc. and a subsidiary of Planet Co.” by being systems thinking, but with a futurist mindset. AI could possibly be the seed of our salvation. Beyond tweaking LEED. We need to figure out how to deliver the Living Building Challenge and LEED Zero in a cost effective way. The need for radical confidence and a Star Trek moment before 2200. "Radical confidence. The Dalai Lama was asked by a colleague of mine, what's it going take to solve our environmental crisis? And he said, ‘Radical confidence.' And that's basically, the old person who plants a tree. It's just doing something that you're never going to receive the benefit of because you have a positive vision of the future. I'm going to do it because it's the right thing to do and whether I benefit from it or not is not super relevant. Obviously, you've got to keep the roof over your head and food on the table. But at the end of the day, you have to have a life that's worth living. And that means, doing things outside of yourself to make it, you just make the world a better place." -Rob Watson   Show Resource and Information Linkedin   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. The built environment represents one of society's largest environmental impacts - contributing nearly one fifth of global GHG emissions, not to mention impacts on natural resources like air and water quality, local ecosystems, and quality of life for residents. Increasingly, policies and public opinion are concentrating on reducing those impacts - creating incentives for new construction and urban development to become more sustainable - to become more “green.”But how do you define whether a building (or a city) is green? Tommy Linstroth is the founder and CEO of Green Badger, a company that provides sustainability accounting services for new construction projects, and Hilari Varnadore is the Vice President for Cities at the U.S. Green Building Council. The two joined Climate Now to explain the globally leading metric for quantifying sustainability of the built environment:  Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Tune in to hear how buildings, stadiums and cities can become LEED certified - what the process entails, what the criteria are, and why every new construction project and city planner should want to be certified as “green” through a process like LEED.Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.Contact us at contact@climatenow.comVisit our website for all of our content and sources for each episode.
