Course and Career Chat

What we're talking about: In this episode, I'm chatting with Bo who initially worked as an electronic engineer in China and Australia before pivoting into cybersecurity. She discusses the similarities and differences between the two industries, the skills that she believes will hold you in good stead working in cybersecurity, the courses she completed at Holmesglen and RMIT to expand her knowledge and network, and what her day-to-day work looks like. 0:51 Introduction to Bo Listen to the summary of the episode so you know what to expect before we start. 2:23 Beginning of the interview with Bo Bo shares great insights into her own childhood and education in China, and she explains the pressure that she was under to do well enough to access further study at an elite university. She explains that she didn't really get a chance to explore her interests or strengths with her focus completely on performing well in exams. She did like solving problems though, and found that she could use those skills best in maths and physics. 8:20 Bo's pathway to electronic engineering Bo chose her course simply based on the fact the score needed to get into electronic engineering was higher than what was needed to get into medicine, and she had achieved the necessary score. She shares a range of tips for high school students that she would now give to her younger self, including looking after your physical and mental health, learning more about yourself through study, investigating strengths and passions and learning about different options before choosing a career, and finding other resources to help you see how you can apply your skills and interests across a range of industries beyond your own imagination. 14:08 Electronic engineering Bo explains that engineering is essentially about finding solutions to problems, whether that's about finding the most cost effective way to do something or developing new systems. She sees the type of engineering you do as just dictating the type of tools that you'll use to solve the problem that you're looking at. 18:03 Certificate IV in Cybersecurity at Holmesglen After 5 years working as an electronic engineer, Bo was looking for something different to look into and learn more about, however she wasn't looking at switching careers just yet. She liked the idea of cybersecurity because it sounded interesting, and the course is also free because it's a growing industry in Australia. Bo explains that this course gave her the fundamental knowledge she needed to understand cybersecurity. She also shares that graduates of this course could enter roles such as Level 1 incident responder or junior security analyst. 22:49 Master of Cybersecurity at RMIT After completing the Certificate IV and at the beginning of the pandemic, Bo had decided that she wanted to pivot her career. She had seen a lot about cyber attacks in the news and felt that she could make a difference in the field. She explains what she learnt in this course, and the opportunities that she got to investigate more about cybersecurity, increase her network in the area and gain work experience to get a better understanding of what her day-to-day work might look like. Bo highlights the benefits of studying through university as a way to get better insights into what the industry is actually like. 28:42 Bo's work as an associate defensive security consultant and penetration tester Bo shares what it's like to work as a defensive security consultant and penetration tester, which is also known as being an ethical hacker. As a consultant, she works with different clients with their unique challenges and systems. This also allows her to work in different fields with different underlying technologies, which leans into her love of problem solving. 33:45 Bo's advice to students who are considering cybersecurity as a career Bo explains what type of students she thinks would thrive in cybersecurity, and she has a special message for girls who are considering pursuing a career in this industry. Links mentioned: Certificate IV in Cybersecurity at Holmesglen: https://holmesglen.edu.au/Courses/Computing-and-IT/Cyber-Security/Certificate-IV-in-Cyber-Security-Online/ As discussed in the episode, this course is offered free for eligible students. Youtube https://youtu.be/d6wNUfPk4qI Lila Naumovski https://fourpillarsbylila.com.au Your destiny has brought you here, to this place in time. I wish to honour that journey you have had. I feel extremely grateful to be able to support many people on their journey towards a more harmonious life through the use of the Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui tools I have learned. Clients often have many ‘aha' moments when they go through their astrology report from me and with that self-awareness comes the ability to create new perspectives on their reality. Awareness allows us to be more in control of whether we react to life or flow with what naturally unfolds before us. Having knowledge of our own pillars can help us know how to work with the natural elements around and within us. Knowing how our unique elemental structure relates to the calendar, gives us a future map allowing more direction in these chaotic times. A bit about me – I am a mum to a beautiful eight-year-old daughter, whose presence in my life blessed me with the opportunity to formally study Chinese Astrology and I've been passionately devoted to Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology for over 18 years now. My passion for Feng Shui began in 2003 when the idea of it piqued my interest and so I had a consultant help me make positive changes to my environment and life. Then, in 2008, I was at the Mind Body Festival in Melbourne where I was drawn to a Feng Shui stand. This was where I met a man named Gary Hicky who did a Chinese Astrology mini reading of my date of birth. It resonated so deeply with me that I completely fell in love with Chinese Astrology. I just had to learn more, so I completed my Certificate IV in Chinese Astrology – Four Pillars of Destiny and I haven't looked back.

What we're talking about: In this episode I have 3 guests - Tina is the senior educator of laboratory programs at Holmesglen, Janet is the lead lab manager at Holmesglen, and Parker has studied a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques at Holmesglen and he also works with Janet there as a lab assistant. All three guests share fantastic information about what it means to work in a laboratory, the huge range of job opportunities available, and the different pathways you can take if you're interested in becoming a laboratory assistant or technician. Pathways to becoming a Laboratory Assistant and Laboratory Technician Tina shares some great information about the pathways available to becoming a lab assistant and/or technician, including the Certificate III in Laboratory Skills as a VET subject at school and the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques as an entry level course at TAFE. One of the benefits she mentions of completing the certificates is that you gain a qualification each step of the way, which is great for your resume, and also ensures that you have skills that employers are looking for and can readily see if you've completed these courses. Tina also mentions the Diploma of Laboratory Technology, which students can choose to do after they complete Certificate IV, and this is the equivalent of the first year of a university degree. The role of a Laboratory Assistant Janet gives us an insight into what it's like to work in the labs at Holmesglen, and the types of activities that she does in her role as the lead lab manager, as well as the day-to-day activities of the other members of her team. Parker works as a laboratory assistant at Holmesglen with Janet, and he also shares what his days look like and also some of the roles that his peers do now that they have completed the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques. The benefits of studying at TAFE Parker is very open about his experiences at school and what led to him leaving school at the end of Year 11 despite being very interested in Science and learning. He contrasts his experience at school with TAFE, and how the environment and focus on hands-on learning was really suited to him. Parker also shares his approach to his career, emphasising the ability he has to use his learning and qualifications as building blocks along the way to access fantastic work opportunities within his field while he continues studying.  Links mentioned: My website: https://www.roadmapeducation.com Monash Tech School: https://www.monashtechschool.vic.edu.au/ Certificate III in Laboratory Skills at Holmesglen: https://holmesglen.edu.au/Courses/Certificate-III-in-Laboratory-Skills-VET-Delivered-to-Secondary-Students/ Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques at Holmesglen: https://holmesglen.edu.au/Courses/Community-and-Health-Sciences/Pathology-and-Laboratory-Testing/Certificate-IV-in-Laboratory-Techniques/

What we're talking about: Today on Course and Career Chat I'm chatting with Linda, who is in her final year of a Bachelor of Circus Arts at NICA. Linda shares how she found her love of Circus by pursuing the subjects she had enjoyed at school like Drama and Music. She also gives us an insight into what her course is like, including what she's studying, the types of circus arts you can major in and what she has chosen, and the ways that NICA prepares graduates for a career in circus both locally and internationally. Choosing Subjects That You Like One of the things that made sense to Linda as a teenager was that if she chose HSC subjects that she liked, then she would end up in a career that she would like. I wholeheartedly agree with this advice, but that's not necessarily a popular opinion, particularly when the subjects you like are more creative. We talk about why this might be the case, and Linda shares how she found a balance and chose pathways that allowed her to do more of what she liked, but also helped her parents and teachers feel comfortable about her future. After she finished school, Linda completed a Bachelor of Arts which allowed her to do further study in business, drama and music which she had enjoyed at school. During this course she first discovered circus through an extracurricular group. Certificate IV in Circus Arts at NICA After Linda finished her degree, she had a decision to make. She was transitioning into full time at her corporate job where she had been working throughout her degree, and she was also really enjoying performing with the circus club she had joined and that's where she first heard about the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA). She decided to take a year away from her corporate job to move to Melbourne and complete the Certificate IV in Circus Arts. Linda explains what's involved in this program, what she learnt and how to apply. Bachelor of Circus Arts in NICA After completing her certificate, Linda decided to progress to the Bachelor of Circus Arts at NICA. She gives us a great insight into the course, including what she has learnt, the types of circus arts she has chosen to major in and what else she could have chosen, and the performance opportunities she's had throughout the course. Linda also explains how NICA is connected to the circus industry, and how graduates are able to pursue work locally and internationally once they've completed the course. Jean Campbell has developed an intriguing business model for her yoga business that is easily applicable for a Pilates business. Jean's model, which she spent the last 2 decades perfecting, is for people who don't want to have a studio with employees, and who are entrepreneurial, or more accurately solo-preneurial. This low-cost solo business model will enable you to make VERY good money with almost no overhead or setup cost, and you can set your own hours; as few or as many as you want. Even better, Jean has developed versions of the model for both online and brick-n-mortar businesses. Raph asked Jean on the show to share her exact process, so you can copy her model and build your own highly profitable solo business, starting right now. Jean doesn't teach business, or run business training, or offer business coaching. She has nothing to sell you (unless you're interested in yoga classes). Penny is the Honorary Founding Director of Australian Dance Vision and registered training organisation Australian Dance Institute. Penny's vision was to create a holistic education dance program via a creative and unique assessment process, while building both excellence and self-esteem for students and teachers. Penny truly believes her syllabus gives students preparation for a professional career in dance (if they choose that path) with life skills that set students up for greater employment opportunities. Penny trained at the Scully Borovansky School, Sydney before becoming a professional dancer in theatre, film, modelling and television in Australia and the USA. Later Penny followed her dance passion and became a teacher of classical ballet. Penny holds her RAD Teachers' Diploma and a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment and a Certificate in Learning, Literacy & Numeracy. More recently Penny is a NEELI Higher Education Advanced Leadership Program graduate 2017. Just as a side note; I love to share the qualifications of my guests because I think it's really important to recognise (especially classical ballet teachers) that go onto further education and seek professional development instead of simply teaching as they were taught. Being any kind of dance teacher is a career (it's not a hobby) and even though the industry is highly unregulated, anyone teaching without the desire for further education to achieve qualifications shouldn't be teaching. Anyway, continuing on with Penny's story she was the proprietor and teacher in her own large academy of dancing (The Penelope Lancaster Academy of Dancing) in Turramurra, Sydney for over twenty years before creating and directing the youth dance company Ballet d'Action. This company performed in Sydney for ten years from 1989 to 1999 with 22 new dance works employing a number of prominent choreographers and musicians. One of the reasons I wanted to have a conversation with Penny for the podcast is because I've been thinking a lot about syllabus lately - especially classical ballet ones. I've been researching and recognising those that do things really well and those that do things very poorly. It's a hot topic on my mind as I look toward to future of my own studio and as so many teachers ask my opinion of syllabi, I find it a duty of care to promote ones that are not only run professionally but also fairly for the health and wellbeing of students. I hope to talk more about this topic freely in the future, but for now I want to focus on how Penny created and co-ordinated the development and implementation of five accredited, nationally recognized dance educational programs in classical ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dancing. Her syllabus and it's process for examining students is really quite revolutionary. In Penny's own words... “Created by qualified Australian teachers for Australian teachers. A unique holistic dance program for everyone who loves to dance. And isn't that everyone!” Penny Lancaster, Founding President During this interview we dive into some of the finer details that make ADV stand out from the rest, the importance of keeping up your academic studies (something I'm incredibly passionate about) and the importance of non threatening examination environments. Connecting with Penny was truly a highlight of my week. I have so much respect for the work she does and the human she is. I can't wait to sit down over a coffee in-person one day soon. I feel like we'd have a lot to talk about... In the meantime, it would mean the world to me if you subscribed, shared a screenshot or rated the podcast. This is a labour of love and your support keeps the podcasts coming! We regularly shine a light on Elephants in the room related to technique, cueing, teaching and so forth. In this episode, John Howard Steel is about to upend many things you thought you know about the history of Pilates. John learned Pilates directly from Joseph Pilates. He practiced at Joe's gym on Eighth Avenue from 1963 until Joe's death in 1967. After Joe died, John was instrumental in the continuation of Contrology; along with two others he formed a committee that kept the gym going and supported Clara, and he single-handedly convinced Romana to take on the starring role as Joe's successor. John's book Caged Lion is the surprising and delightful history of Pilates, from Joe's mysterious early life, through his time in New York and John's experience of learning Pilates (Contrology) from Joe, and striding arm-in-arm with Joe through the streets of New York, listening to Joe lecture about his favourite and only subject of conversation, Contrology. But the book goes far beyond Joe's life, it is the story of Pilates itself – how it transcended Joe's personality and his lifetime, and became a worldwide phenomenon bringing happiness to millions. I (Raph) have been teaching Pilates for 16 years and I was repeatedly surprised by Caged Lion, not to mention entertained. It is an enthralling read; a genuinely well-written book which brings the characters to life in 3 dimensions. If you have even a passing interest in Pilates you absolutely must read it, trust me. Cloe also recommends it I think. In this interview John and Raph discuss Joe's personality, his teaching style and what it was like to learn from him, we talk about what defines Pilates and ultimately how it doesn't matter what kind of Pilates you do, but rather HOW you do it. In today's Education in Isolation Podcast, I interview Marc Ratcliffe, CEO of MRWED Training and Assessment, and a multi-award-winning trainer, author and education entrepreneur. Marc delivers Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and PD for Trainers and Assessors. When COVID hit, Marc was stuck in the US and has been there ever since, running his RTO from Minnesota. Marc shares his views on professional training and his firm belief that having fun while learning and getting help from a professional trainer can lead to future success. Marc has been serving the VET sector for 25 years so far and he strongly advocates for ‘edutainment'. Some main points from this interview with him are:Marc says it's our responsibility to push ourselves forward and become the best versions of ourselves. This is precisely what his organisation aims for; making sure people are capable enough to realise their true worth.People often do not understand the real importance of training. Trained professionals do better in organisations than those who are unsure about their designation.MRWED focuses on finding the creative side in all individuals and building a rewarding career.During COVID-19, the biggest challenge was to kick start the organisation after a massive break. Keeping the team motivated was nerve-wracking and came with its own challenges. However, as the CEO, Marc tried to shift everyone's focus towards the prize.Due to the pandemic, anxiety started building up in clients and Marc's team had to support them the best way they could. After all, understanding your client's needs and helping them sort their issues leads to better training.Communication is often overlooked. As a business owner, Marc reminds clients about the importance of communicating their ideas. This is the lifeblood of any organisation.People are born with a thirst for professional development and training. They are always on the lookout for a better opportunity that encourages and motivates them to move forward. Training becomes easy when people are willing to go through the motions. Without being dedicated to a dynamic way of learning, one cannot expect to succeed efficiently. Engagement strategies bring out the best in individuals, giving them the ability to control over their goals better. When times were tough, many people took care of Marc and his team. When times are bad, Marc considers it their responsibility to care for those who are willing to give it their all. Marc saw the hidden opportunity in the training industry and grabbed it with both hands, exactly what he expects from others to polish their lives.Marc is a firm believer in taking creative breaks in life. Every now and then, he showcases his artistic side and encourages others to do the same.Marc's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcr1/MRWED Training and Assessment's Website: https://www.mrwed.edu.au/trainers/marc-ratcliffeMarc's Website: https://www.marcratcliffe.com/Education in Isolation Website: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/education-in-isolation-with-angela-connell-8ovJIuX_fyB/ Angela's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnell/

Simon White is originally from New Zealand. He went to university at age 10, specially selected to attend the Creative Writing school. As an adult, to pay his way through university, he worked as a Santa Claus, a seahorse, a cocktail flair barman, and a catwalk model. His first grown-up employment was as a shark diver and feeder at Christchurch Aquarium in New Zealand, which he did every single day for 3 years. Like all jobs, the novelty wears off eventually …Always having an interest in all things Air and Space, which included getting a pilot’s licence, launching hundreds of model rockets, and founding the Queensland Amateur Rocketry Club, he turned his attention to Aviation as a career. After failing at Military Pilot School, he became an aircraft mechanic, first with QANTAS Defence Services, then with BAE Systems as a Fighter Jet mechanic on the F-18 Hornet program. Like most people in Project Controls, he didn’t find it – it found him. After getting tired of constantly smelling like jet fuel, he volunteered to be a ‘CSA’, not knowing what it was.He was an integral team member in BAE Systems highly successful Critical Chain Project Management implementation. His contribution to the TOC/CCPM Body of Knowledge is the mantra ‘FOCUS and ACT’. He went on to work as Fleet Manager for the 33-strong RAAF BAE Hawk Fighter Jet Trainer fleet, and then Project Controls Management for the Aerospace Business Unit. He currently works as Manager of Project Control for BAE Systems Australia, but doesn’t care much for role titles – it’s more important what you do, not what you’re called – the role is to Deliver Reliable, Repeatable Project Control. He has received 2 BAE Chairman’s Awards for his efforts, and is currently driving the first Certificate IV in Project Control in Australia, to help counteract the Australian market supply/demand imbalance for the discipline. He thrives on thought experiments and interesting questions, like ‘What happens if you turn EVM upside down?’, or ‘Does the baton get dropped inside organisations because of the way we draw our organisational structures?’#PAYITFORWARDSubscribe today at https://www.projectchatterpodcast.com/ or check out our free slack chat community - simply subscribe to our website to get invited.Don't forget to buy some Project Chatter merch on our charity store, where all profits are donated to our charity partners. In this episode you’ll hear from Natalie, the Academic Director of the Australian College of Vet Nursing. Natalie has Certificate IV qualifications in veterinary nursing, canine behaviour, training and assessment, and Diplomas in vocational education and training, surgical nursing, and emergency and critical care. When I listened back to this interview it occurred to me that Natalie is an extremely empathetic person. So much of what she has to say comes from a place of sensitivity towards how another person, or animal, is feeling. This natural proclivity towards empathy is a perfect fit for Natalie’s passion for canine and (more recently) feline behaviour. Behaviour is also one of my favourite areas so I loved geeking out with Natalie on this topic.Natalie’s career moved from clinical nursing to academia following the loss of a very special dog and the cascade of events that followed. I’m really grateful to Natalie for talking about this and other topics with a level of honesty and vulnerability that I know was not easy. These experiences underpin Natalie’s drive to empower other nurses to recognise and manage stress and compassion fatigue; which is of course an essential part of our story.

Sara grew up with a step-dad who was an alcoholic and she didn’t really like being at home and felt like she didn’t belong. She was sexually abused as a child and teenager before going into foster care in her mid-teens. Sara started using alcohol when she was around 11 years old, then marijuana at 12 and eventually ice at 15. She ran away from foster care repeatedly, was homeless for about 14 years and had two children in her late teens and early 20’s. Whilst in prison for the second time for dealing drugs, Sara realized that she had to change, asked for help and found Narcotics Anonymous. Sara’s deferred sentence has enabled her to study for a Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs and she has been clean for over 9 months.Nat’s parent split up when he was very young and living with his mum meant that he could pretty much do what he liked.  His primary school gang started to do break and enters when he was 6 years old and he regularly stole stuff from people’s beach houses. Nat started using alcohol and marijuana as a 14 year old and was binge drinking by the time he left school and moved out of home when he was 16.  He started a relationship with an alcoholic and started using speed, coke and heroin, enjoying the feeling without suffering any consequences.  Over the next 10 years he withdrew socially and avoided friends and family, started to steal, scam, lie and cheat to enable him to meet his drug needs.  Prison made him realize that he needed to do something about his life and through NA he eventually found a way to stay clean and enjoy life.If you have a problem with drugs of any kind, you can call the Narcotics Anonymous helpline on 1300 652 820 or 0488 811 247 or go online at na.org.au.
