Evangelism can seem daunting enough. But when you throw in the fact that the nations are coming to us in the United States in record numbers, if we’re honest, it can add more layers of discomfort. In this episode, Micah Fries, pastor of Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee, joins hosts Johnny Hunt and Kevin Ezell to share his specific passion and expertise for reaching Muslims with the gospel. Fries doesn’t sidestep the innate fears many of us bring into the prospect of having gospel conversations with Muslims, but he also gives practical ways churches and individuals can overcome those fears and see evangelistic fruit. The presence of Islam in North America is still a lightning-rod issue, even 17 years after 9/11. This week we return to the topic of how Christians can engage their Muslim immigrant and refugee neighbors—and wade through the complicated waters of related political issues—in a way that is biblical and missional. We consulted a new guest, Micah Fries, Senior Pastor of Brainerd Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN and editor of Islam and North America: Loving Our Muslim Neighbors. Prior to serving at Brainerd, he served as the Vice President of LifeWay Research in Nashville, TN and as a frequent speaker in churches and conferences. He has served as a Senior Pastor in Missouri and an international church planter in Burkina Faso, West Africa. He holds a Master of Divinity from Midwestern Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from The Baptist College of Florida. While in college, Micah met Tracy, and they married in May of 2000. Micah is currently a Ph.D. student, studying North American Missiology at Southeastern Seminary. After college graduation Micah & Tracy moved to Burkina Faso, West Africa where they worked as church planters among the Dagaara people of Burkina Faso and Ghana. After planting churches in West Africa, Micah and Tracy returned to the US where they moved to Kansas City so that Micah could attend seminary. Follow Micah on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. BEST QUOTES "I workout for my mind. The physical health benefits are an aside. It's to clear my head." "Daily I will read a couple of chapters of fiction. It helps my brain to shut down before I go to sleep." "I would tell my 20-year-old self I needed to be more comfortable with who I am." "I always knew that I was a chameleon, but it was a survival technique for me. Because I moved so often it was how I could quickly make friends and adjust." "Like a lot of people, I have a constant sense of inferiority and I overcompensate for that with pride sometimes." "I have to rest in who He has made me to be, rest in the Gospel, rest in who He is." "Stop dating that girl, pick up your Bible, and get your butt to church." "I quickly realized that life was bigger than money and gaining credentials." "I was headed down a road of greed and self absorption and God got me back on track. And it was through the local church that all that happened." "A lot of my earlier ministry was worrying about people who might say disparaging things, but as it turned out they had very little power." "It's when you are pastoring a church that is older than a couple of years and there are systems, and cultures that you have to deal with that were established long before you were there." "We hope to encourage pastors that are in those established church settings that don't know how to navigate some of those issues." "Most conflict in the church is over personality and leadership and how you lead change." Micah Fries joins us to help us understand how we can best talk to our kids about the Trinity. Helping kids understand this truth is so important - that kids understand that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are One. It would be easy to move into believing that we actually serve three Gods (tritheism) or to believe that God is One, acting in three different ways (modalism). Either of these take us to a place we don't want to be - so how do we explain that God is three Persons? Micah is here to help us.  Read more show notes at http://www.marycwiley.com/podcast/how-can-god-be-three-in-one
