POPULARITY
Instead of something to be feared, Bobby Gruenewald has always seen technology's potential for good. One day, while waiting in a long line at the Chicago airport, he wondered: could technology improve his lagging Bible-reading habit? Bobby pulled on that string, and the YouVersion Bible App was born. Launching as one of the 200 original free apps on the Apple App Store, YouVersion has changed the way the world reads scripture. As the app approaches 1 billion installs, Bobby reflects on the early failures of YouVersion, the aggressive moves that led to its historic growth, and how the rise of AI just might be pushing us more toward God.
Life Church's innovation leader and creator of the YouVersion Bible app Bobby Gruenewald shares about the growth of Bible engagement over the last two years, not just of the YouVersion app, plus the record of almost 19 million people globally using YouVersion on Easter Sunday 2025. Bruce Becker of Time of Grace Ministries' Bible Threads Podcast and author of "Torn," reminds us we are exiles of another kingdom living in this world. It's Thursday, April 24th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark India Supreme Court heard appeal about anti-conversion laws India's Supreme Court heard an appeal last week against anti-conversion laws in the country. The advocacy group Citizens for Justice and Peace has filed petitions against such laws since 2020. Twelve out of India's 28 states have anti-conversion laws. International Christian Concern warns of a “pattern of abuse by Hindu radical groups, who use the laws to initiate false complaints and pressure law enforcement to act against individual Christians and their communities, often without credible evidence.” U.S. military presence in Syria cut in half The United States is preparing to cut its military presence in Syria by half over the coming months. The U.S. military has about 2,000 troops in the Middle Eastern country. Sean Parnell, the chief spokesman for the Pentagon, said, “Recognizing the success the United States has had against ISIS, including its 2019 territorial defeat under President Trump, today the Secretary of Defense directed the consolidation of U.S. forces in Syria under Combined Joint Task Force.” Trump: 145% tariff on Chinese goods will come down On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that his 145% tariff on imports from China will likely come down. TRUMP: 145% is very high. It won't be that high. We were talking about fentanyl, where various elements built it up to 145%. No, it won't be anywhere near that high. But it won't be zero. Used to be zero. “We were just destroyed. China was taking us for a ride, and it's not going to happen. We're going to be very good to China. Have a great relationship with President Xi. But they would make billions and billions and billions of dollars a year, and they would build their military out of the United States, and what they made. So that won't happen, but they're going to do very well.” White House spokesman Kush Desai told FOX Business that the U.S. is not looking to unilaterally lower tariffs and that China must a agree to a trade deal. Trump's Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias meets On Tuesday, Trump administration officials held the inaugural meeting of the Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias in the federal government. Attorney General Pamela Bondi hosted the meeting. BONDI: “As President Trump has stated, the Biden administration engaged in an egregious pattern of targeting peaceful Christians while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offenses. The President is right. “Biden's Department of Justice abused and targeted Christians. Pro-life Christians were arrested and imprisoned for peacefully praying outside abortion clinics. The FBI spied on traditional Catholics in their parishes. President Biden declared Easter Sunday to be Transgender Day of Visibility. No longer.” Romans 13:3 says, “For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.” 5 million student loan borrowers who stopped paying need to start again The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it will resume collections of defaulted federal student loans. The Department has not collected on such loans since 2020. Currently, over 42 million borrowers owe more than $1.6 trillion in student debt. And over five million borrowers have not made a monthly payment in the last three years. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said, “American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies.” Notorious abortionist closes Colorado abortion mill The oldest and most notorious abortionist in Colorado announced he is closing his abortion mill. Warren Hern, age 86, opened the Boulder Abortion Clinic in 1975, killing thousands of unborn babies since then. In an interview with Channel 9 in Denver two years ago, Hern described his work of killing babies this way. HERN: “I have always felt this is an extremely important service, and there's never been a time when it's less important.” But you get a fuller appreciation of the mindset of abortionist Hern from a speech he gave via video at a Boulder pro-abortion march on July 9, 2022, just days after Roe v. Wade had been overturned on June 22, 2022. HERN: “The Republican Party is the face of fascism in America. Fox News is the voice of fascism in America. The ideology of this fascism is rooted in the white supremacist, Christian nationalist movement that has taken control of the Republican Party. “Your response to this mortal danger to women and to democracy in America must be to support every Democratic candidate for public office and to defeat every single Republican candidate for public office. Nothing else will do.” Troy Newman with Operation Rescue commented on the closure. He said, “Operation Rescue has some thirty years of history with this clinic – everything from activism on the sidewalk, documenting abortion injuries, filing complaints, and other legal efforts to expose wrongdoing. … We cannot praise God enough for the closure of this monstrous killing center.” Proverbs 10:6-7 says, “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.” Definition of a regular churchgoer A recent study from Lifeway Research found 53% of U.S. adults consider someone a regular churchgoer if they attend services at least weekly. A previous study found a similar amount of Protestant churchgoers agree. However, only 16% of Protestant pastors say that regular churchgoers attend at least once a week. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “Pastors … are seeing churchgoers attend less often. But when Americans hear ‘regular churchgoer,' they picture someone attending every week or very close to it.” 18.6 million engaged with YouVersion Bible on Resurrection Sunday And finally, the YouVersion Bible app saw a record 18.6 million people engaging with Scripture on Resurrection Sunday this year. That's up 11% compared to last year. Leading up to Resurrection Sunday, Bible engagement increased by over 20% across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Bobby Gruenewald, the CEO of YouVersion Bible app, said they're seeing more interest in the Bible on other days too: “many of our record days for engagement have happened on seemingly ordinary days this year, with no specific reason for the spikes -- except that God is on the move.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, April 24th, in the year of our Lord 2025. It's Wednesday, January 15th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark India releases imprisoned Christian pastor and wife after 20 months Praise God! The Christian Post reports officials in India released a pastor and his wife from prison at the end of last month. Pastor Ashok Yadav and his wife, Phoola, spent 20 months in prison under an anti-conversion law in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Authorities have used such anti-conversion laws to detain over 1,000 Christians across India. Over 400 Christian leaders recently sent a letter, appealing to the country's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The letter noted, “Rising hate speech, especially from elected officials, has emboldened acts of violence against Christians. Mobs disrupt peaceful Christian gatherings and threaten carol singers with impunity.” According to Open Doors, India is the 11th most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Mega Hindu pilgrimage to draw 400 million Speaking of India, the country is hosting the largest religious gathering in the world starting this week. It is known as the Maha Kumbh Mela which means the festival of the sacred pitcher. (P-I-T-C-H-E-R) It is held every 12 years. The Hindu festival is expected to draw 400 million pilgrims to the city of Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh. People bathe at the intersection of multiple important rivers, including the Gagnes, which are considered sacred. The Indian Express notes people believe the bathing washes away their sins and gets them spiritual merit. But 1 Corinthians 6:11 says, “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 15,343 Canadians died in 2023 by euthanasia Canada released its fifth annual report on medical assistance in dying. The latest report found 15,343 people died in Canada under the Medical Assistance in Dying program in 2023. This brought the cumulative number of euthanasia deaths to 60,000. That's 4.7 percent of all Canadian deaths since the program began in 2016. Since then, the annual growth rate of such killings continues to rise at 15.8 percent. Trump prepared to cut trillions from federal budget Donald Trump's incoming presidential administration aims to cut trillions of dollars from the U.S. federal budget and abolish or consolidate many federal agencies. In light of that, Pew Research released a report on the federal workforce in the United States. The report noted the number of federal workers has grown over time. But their share of the civilian workforce has remained at about 1.5% of total civilian employment for a decade. The federal government employs 2.4 million people, not including the Postal Service and active-duty military personnel. That makes the federal government the largest employer in the U.S., outnumbering major companies like Walmart, McDonald's, and Amazon. Amazon and Metz ending their “woke” Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion programs Speaking of Amazon, both it and Meta are among major companies that are ending their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. Instead of the “woke” diversity, equity and inclusion programs, Meta decided instead to focus on building “the best teams with the most talented people.” Imagine that. In addition, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the end of their so-called fact-checking program on their platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Inflation up 0.2% The Labor Department reports that U.S. wholesale inflation rose by 0.2 percent last month compared to November. This producer price index measures inflation before it reaches consumers. On an annual basis, producer prices rose 3.3% last month. The wholesale inflation was driven by rising energy prices, especially gasoline prices. YouVersion Bible App experienced 798,000 downloads on one day And finally, the YouVersion Bible App reports it had 798,000 downloads on Sunday, January 5. That's the largest number of installs on a single day for the app. Bobby Gruenewald, founder of YouVersion, told The Christian Post, “We tend to see a seasonal uptick in Bible engagement at the beginning of the year as people start new habits and are interested in reading the Bible for the first time. What's interesting to us is that this year's increase is even higher than this same time last year, and it's a trend we're seeing globally.” The Bible app experienced its largest increases in downloads in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. For example, Bible app activity increased by 297 percent in Northern Africa, and it increased by 166 percent in the Middle East. In Acts 13:47, the Apostle Paul said, “For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the Earth.'” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, January 15th, in the year of our Lord 2025. It's Thursday, January 4th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaraguan authorities arrested 14 priests Authorities in Nicaragua have arrested at least 14 priests, two seminarians, and a bishop in recent days. Some priests face arrest simply for publicly praying for imprisoned bishop Rolando Alvarez. He is a leading critic of the country's president, Daniel Ortega. Ortega's regime has been cracking down on descent, especially from priests who voice religious liberty concerns. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom noted that the uptick in persecution in recent years comes “despite the high level of persecution against Catholic leaders since protests in 2018. Now, 2022 was the first year in which the government imprisoned members of the clergy.” Kenyan bishop opposes Pope on blessing homosexual couples Meanwhile in Africa, a Kenyan bishop has prohibited blessings for people living in vile passions. Paul Kariuki Njiru is the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Wote. He called out the Pope for a recent declaration that authorizes some kind of blessing for same-sex couples. Njiru wrote, “The Declaration … should be rejected in totality, and we faithfully uphold the Gospel teachings … on marriage and sexuality. … We bishops, like Saints Peter and John, will say, ‘Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight for us to obey you rather than God' (Acts 4:19–20). … For pastoral reasons, I therefore exhort my priests to invite those couples to a life of conversion by the words of the Gospel: ‘Repent and believe in the Gospel' (Mark 1:14–15).” World grew by 75 million people in 2023 The world's population grew by 75 million people last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This brings the total number of people to over eight billion. The worldwide population growth rate was 1%. Every second, there are an estimated 4.3 births and two deaths globally. The U.S. grew by only half a percent, adding 1.7 million people for a total population of 335.8 million. The U.S. is on track for one of its slowest decades on record for population growth. Texas vs. Biden on abortion Yesterday, a U.S. federal appeals court sided with Texas against the Biden administration in an abortion case. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, the Biden administration issued a directive to force hospitals and emergency rooms to offer abortions. The state of Texas challenged the abortion mandate along with the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Ryan Bangert with Alliance Defending Freedom told Life News, “Hospitals—especially emergency rooms—are centers for preserving life. The government has no business transforming them into abortion clinics.” 510 bills oppose homosexuality State legislators introduced a record 510 bills last year that oppose sexually perverted lifestyles. This according to the pro-homosexual American Civil Liberties Union. The number of such measures is up from 180 in 2022. Of the 500 plus bills, 84 are now law across 23 states. Tennessee and North Dakota tied for passing the most bills. The bills included bans on public shows of sexually perverted lifestyles as well as the accommodation of people pretending to be the opposite sex through sports or bathrooms. 100 million more devices downloaded YouVersion Bible app YouVersion.com reports people downloaded and used its Bible apps at the highest rate ever last year. Downloads increased by 100 million devices, and daily usage increased by 20%. Most of the downloads take place outside the U.S. like in India, Africa, and Latin America. Once again, the verse that people engaged with the most last year was Isaiah 41:10. It says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Bobby Gruenewald, the founder of YouVersion.com, said, “More than ever before, we are seeing the global Church unify around God's Word.” Anniversary of church leader's birth And finally, today marks the birth of church leader and scholar James Ussher on January 4, 1581. He was the Church of Ireland's Archbishop of Armagh and supported the Protestant Reformation in his country during the early 1600s. Ussher is particularly known for his massive work, The Annals of the Old Testament. His chronology of the Bible dated creation to October 23, 4004 B.C. We all want to forget the year 2020, especially those spring months when the COVID virus and the fear of the unknown began to move around the globe. However, in the midst of that pandemic we learned where people go to find peace. The Bible. During the hardest moments of 2020, Bible searches soared online and a record number of people turned to Scripture for passages addressing fear, healing, and justice. The YouVersion Bible app saw searches increase by 80%, totaling nearly 600 million worldwide. YouVersion found Bobby Gruenewald said, "Through every hardship, people continue to seek God and turn to the Bible for strength, peace, and hope. While 2020 is a year so many say they'd like to forget, we see it as a year to remember how God used the Bible app to help so many people who were searching for answers." Overall, the app tracked 43.6 billion chapters of the Bible read in 2020, with half a billion verses shared, its highest on record. So for many people, reading Scripture is a way that they find peace in their moments of stress and anxiety. What do you do to find peace? Finding peace is something that a lot of people, maybe even you, are trying to find. The unfortunate reality is we end up pursuing a lot of unhealthy comforts which in the end don't bring peace, and instead hook us into habits that hurt. This is one of the reason why Scripture admonishes us to practice discipline, and self control in our pursuit of finding the peace that only Jesus can give. This is why this Christmas season we are practicing some of the disciplines of advent. Advent challenges us to make space for Jesus in our lives by preparing for his coming through worship, prayer, fasting, Scripture reading and acts of generosity. On Sunday we will continue with part two of our advent sermon series by discovering how we can find true peace in our lives when we make room for Jesus in our chaotic lives. To join us on the journey give a listen to part two of Make Room.

Bobby Gruenewald is a lifelong learner, and an activator. He majored in Finance, but was always interested in entrepreneurship. In 1995, he built a website for a car dealership for $100, and then went on to build hondaparts.com. The dealer he worked for committed to investing in his future projects right then and there. Post that, he built several companies and sold them, creating a successful track record. He has been married for 26 years, and has 4 children. His 16 year old just started driving, but he claims she is a great driver... way better than the self driving mode on his Tesla. As a hobby - or addiction, as he confesses - he is a pilot but didn't stop with his pilots license. He can fly helicopters, seas planes, jets - over the past few years, he had flown 44 different types of planes. He's found it was very therapeutic to be up in the air... a great way to clear his head of all the things that occupy his thoughts. In spite of being on staff at a church, Bobby found himself not reading the bible regularly. While standing in the security line in the airport, he thought up an idea to use technology to help him read the Bible more, and grow spiritually. This is the creation story of the YouVersion Bible App.SponsorsImmediateOrbitPostmarkStytchVerb DataWebapp.ioLinksWebsite: https://www.youversion.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobbygruenewald/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Bobby serves as Pastor and Innovation Leader at Life.Church, a multisite church based in Oklahoma; and is the founder of the YouVersion Bible App with over 500 million unique downloads globally. He is passionate about exploring new ideas and finding practical ways to leverage them for the global Church. Quick takeaways from this interview… “The fruit [idea] is not my identity; my identity is in the Tree…This makes me very open to feedback. It’s okay if this isn’t the best idea. I’m confident God’s going to enable me to produce more.” – Bobby Gruenewald “Part of being creative is not being too critical too early, but at some point being realistic and filtering out things that won’t work.” – Phil Cooke The “abundance mindset” axiom: “If you don’t like this idea, don’t worry, there’s more where that came from. God designed me to create and I’m confident in that design.” – Bobby Gruenewald “The credibility of the critic really matters.” – Phil Cooke “When you have people with your best interest (or the vision or the ministry) at heart that give you feedback, those are the right people to listen to.” – Bobby Gruenewald Follow Bobby Gruenewald @bobbygwald https://www.facebook.com/bobbygwald/ https://www.instagram.com/bobbygwald/ https://twitter.com/bobbygwald Find out more about YouVersion: https://www.youversion.com/ Get the free Bible App from YouVersion here: https://www.youversion.com/the-bible-app/ Find out more about Life Church: https://www.life.church/ For more tips on leadership and leading creative teams, visit Phil’s blog at https://www.philcooke.com Get a free eBook on Creativity! Bobby Gruenewald of YouVersion joins us this week giving us the low down on the origins of this wildly popular bible app with 370M+ downloads and counting. This pastor, entrepreneur and former rap artist (who knew?) shares with the team how the desire to become better engaged with scripture was the impetus to developing YouVersion, the first iteration of which proved to be a failure - a web app because there was just no iPhone yet (remember the days?). The team’s approach to failure, commitment to being faithful to God’s leading step by step and the desire to be the best stewards of all God gives them are all elements contributing to YouVersion’s success and Bobby gives us the details as well as a reveal into the future direction of the app to deepen the relationship between God and His People. Bobby’s community is an example of how a church actively chooses to live within the realm of innovation to further the message of the gospel. Share with us the ways you are innovating within your organizations for the sake of the gospel and the fame of His Name at faithdrivenentrepreneur.org. Nir’s Note: An edited version of this essay appeared in The Atlantic. Below is my original. It’s not often an app has the power to keep someone out of a strip club. But according to Bobby Gruenewald, CEO of YouVersion, that’s exactly what his Bible app did. Gruenewald says a user of his app walked into a business of ill repute when suddenly, out of the heavens, he received a notification on his phone. “God’s trying to tell me something!,” Gruenewald recalled the user saying, “I just walked into a strip club — and man — the Bible just texted me!” You can read the Nir and Far blog post: Bible App: Getting 100 Million Downloads is More Psychology Than Miracles https://www.nirandfar.com/2013/07/the-app-of-god-getting-100-million-downloads-is-more-psychology-than-miracles.html Nir & Far, a podcast about business, behaviour and the brain by Nir Eyal.
