Dr. Natalie Houghtby-Haddon On Leading With Purpose In Uncertain Times

One Humanity Lab: Into an Ecology of Wholeness

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2025 35:34

We sat down with Dr. Natalie Houghtby-Haddon, a longtime colleague of both Bonnie and Ina through the George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership (GW CEPL). Our conversation began with her new role as Executive Director of the Center, stepping in at a time of transition and uncertainty. For more than two decades, the Center has focused largely on federal government leadership training, but as that landscape shifts, so does CEPL's direction. Originally launched to support local government employees, the Center quickly evolved to serve the federal workforce, adding executive coaching to its offerings along the way. Now, with the emergence of “CEPL 4.0,” the Center, led by Dr. Houghtby-Haddon, is looking beyond public service to develop leadership training for corporations and other sectors. It's a moment of challenge, but also opportunity. With Dr. Houghtby-Haddon at the helm, we explored how her lifelong commitment to building healthy, just, and sustainable communities informs this next chapter. That guiding principle first led her to the United Nations, then with a desire to make more of a direct impact in the community, she became a clergywoman and spent two decades pastoring churches in Southern California. Throughout her career, Dr. Houghtby-Haddon has helped people reimagine what's possible in their lives and communities. She shared her powerful framework of the “four worlds”—mythic, communal, social, and cultural—interconnected spheres that help us navigate change and envision new ways of being. Drawing on her experience across leadership, ministry, and public service, she spoke about her personal philosophy and how both failures and successes have shaped her journey. Dr. Houghtby-Haddon also walked us through five key leadership perspectives that have influenced her thinking and continue to do so at the pivotal time for the Center: Scientific Management, Excellence, Values-Based Leadership, Trust and Cultural Leadership, and Whole-Person Leadership. Each contributes to a holistic view of how leaders and the organizations they serve can thrive in times of transformation. Toward the end of the conversation, we returned to Dr. Houghtby-Haddon's model and how it inspires people to move beyond it in pursuit of their fullest potential. She spoke about the importance of letting go of the old and welcoming the new—something she's experiencing first hand at the Center, where the future is uncertain but full of exciting possibilities to rethink leadership and help leaders lean into their full potential. Don't miss our lightning round at the end of the conversation to find out what Dr. Houghtby-Haddon might do if she had all the time in the world, where she might spend it, and what she's currently reading. It's a fascinating conversation that really opens the mind, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

This month marks the opening of a new season for the red-hot NWSL–The National Women's Soccer League. Jim's this week is the Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer of the NWSL, Julie Haddon. Jim has known Julie for many years, going back to her years at the NFL as VP of Global Brand and consumer marketing, before joining the NWSL as its first-ever CMO. Great CMOs are growth drivers, and Julie has indeed done that with her team. Julie has been CMO for about 2.5 years and the growth rate is staggering; double the number of fans in attendance at matches; two new teams joining the league with more coming; a four-year media deal worth $240 million–the previous media deal was for three years for $4.5 million. And team valuations are increasing massively. Julie was a journalism major years ago at Indiana University in Bloomington, before launching a career in tech & entertainment that is epic: Dreamworks Animation, eBay, PayPal, Twitter, Zynga, Sofi, the NFL, and now the NWSL. This Holiday Season, Create a Tradition That Transforms Lives What if this Christmas, your family could do something more meaningful than decorating the tree or exchanging gifts—something that plants seeds of kindness and changes lives across the globe? Imagine a tradition that not only brings joy to others but also shapes your children’s hearts with a lifelong spirit of generosity. This holiday, make giving the greatest gift of all. How can we make this a reality? Catherine’s guest, Brian Frazier, shares his powerful journey of faith and purpose. With nearly 15 years at World Vision—a Christian humanitarian organization that brings hope to the poor and oppressed—Brian has witnessed firsthand the transformational power of generosity. Inspired by a life-changing trip to India, Brian left a successful career in engineering and banking to dedicate his life to helping others. His commitment even led his family to relocate to Bangalore, India, in pursuit of service. In this episode, Catherine and Brian explore how families can embrace generosity and make an extraordinary impact through simple acts of giving. Here’s what you’ll discover: The Power of Family Giving: Brian shares how involving children in charitable activities—like choosing gifts through World Vision’s gift catalog—can create meaningful family traditions that inspire lifelong habits of giving. World Vision’s Global Impact: Learn how World Vision has sparked transformative change—from creating Mongolia’s first Christian radio station to delivering clean water to villages in Rwanda. Stories That Inspire Hope: Hear about Rachida, an 8-year-old Sudanese refugee who found hope through World Vision’s efforts after losing her family to war. Lives Transformed: Experience the joy of a family in Zambia whose life was forever changed by a goat-herding program, offering them new opportunities and hope for the future. Generosity as a Legacy: Discover how small acts—like sponsoring a child or giving a life-changing gift—can instill values of compassion and selflessness in your children, creating a lasting legacy of generosity. Building Global Bridges: Reflect on how connecting with those in need—whether across the world or in your community—brings hope, fuels dreams, and reminds us of the profound difference we can make together. This episode is an invitation to bring your faith to life this Christmas season through actionable, family-focused giving. Together, we can bridge the gap between affluence and need, offering hope to children around the world while creating cherished family traditions grounded in love and service. For more information, to sponsor a child, or to explore the gift catalog, visit worldvision.org. Start a tradition of generosity today, and let this Christmas be remembered as the season your family gave the gift of hope. About the Guest: Brian Frazier is the Executive Director of Team World Vision, a program of World Vision that mobilizes individuals—many of them non-runners—to conquer half and full marathons in support of ending the global water crisis in Jesus’ name. In his role, Brian passionately inspires people to take on physical challenges on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable communities. Brian’s unconventional career path began in engineering, transitioned to banking with a focus on microfinance, and ultimately led him to finding his calling in fundraising. Over the course of his career with World Vision, Brian has worked in more than 30 countries. His unique perspective and broad skill set fuel his commitment to advocating for the forgotten and marginalized. Brian lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Colette. Together, they are the proud parents of four wonderful children: Corban, Haddon, Kai, and Niya. Episode Links: World Vision Gift Catalog. In our bustling, fast-paced world, the concept of stillness can often seem alien, if not downright impossible. But as we learn from Gretchen Saffles, embracing stillness and our weaknesses can bring us closer to God and foster a deeper sense of inner peace. Gretchen and Stephanie discuss the challenge of being still and overcoming the need for constant productivity. Advised by her Christian counselor to be still before the Lord for just one minute, Gretchen discovered this simple exercise to be remarkably challenging, due to her ingrained belief in the importance of constant productivity. She realized that her busy life and the demands of various activities had clouded her mind and distanced her from a genuine relationship with God. Through this journey, she learned that stillness and simplicity are not just luxuries, but essential spiritual disciplines. Taking time to be still before the Lord is an act of submission, a recognition that God is in control. Unlike some forms of secular meditation, which emphasize emptying the mind, biblical meditation involves filling the mind with God's truths. Gretchen found Christ in this practice, which helped her redirect her focus from worldly anxieties to divine wisdom. Gretchen is learning to take a slow, reflective approach to reading Scripture, often meditating on a single verse or passage for an extended period. This method allows her to absorb the Word deeply and apply it practically in her life. Currently, she is reading the Bible chronologically, finding fresh insights in the Beatitudes. Stephanie and Gretchan talk about embracing weakness as strength, and finding God's power in our weak moments.  In a culture that idolizes strength and self-reliance, embracing weakness can seem counterintuitive. Yet Gretchen and Stephanie both emphasize that true Christian strength shines brightest in our moments of weakness. They cite biblical examples like Moses and Paul, whose infirmities highlighted God's power and grace. This theology of suffering is rooted deeply in scripture, reminding us that sharing in Christ's sufferings leads to a more intimate relationship with God. Philippians 3:10 encapsulates this truth: knowing Christ through both the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings brings us closer to Him. Gretchen shares a poignant anecdote about her grandmother, who lived with severe rheumatoid arthritis. Despite immense physical pain, her grandmother's life radiated God's power, demonstrating that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Wisdom is a treasure for life, made possible through a slow, meditative approach to Scripture reading. Gretchen's insights into wisdom reveal it as a treasure that points to Christ, wisdom personified. Her slow, meditative approach to reading Scripture allows time for absorption and contemplation, fostering a deeper connection with God's Word. This method reinforces the importance of letting the Holy Spirit guide our understanding of Scripture. Gretchen attributes much of her wisdom and love for the book of Proverbs to her mother. Her upbringing in a busy ministry home showed her that all good works should stem from a profound relationship with God, not just from a sense of duty. “Soul Scrubbing” is the work of the Holy Spirit, allowing the Word to cleanse and renew us. Gretchen uses the metaphor of "soul scrubbing" to describe how the Holy Spirit uses the Word to cleanse our minds and souls. This practice involves more than just a cursory reading of Scripture. It calls for a deep dive into God's truths, allowing them to renew and transform us. She has been focusing on meditating on God's love, recently finding new significance in John 3:16. Recognizing the necessity of mental, physical, and spiritual rest, she strives to rest in God's love, which fosters deeper intimacy with Him. For those feeling overwhelmed by life's demands, Saffles's book "Word Over World" offers a heartfelt guide to rediscovering intimacy with God. It's a reminder that even in our busiest moments, God's love and wisdom are always within reach, waiting for us in the stillness. MORE ABOUT "WORD OVER WORLD" In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) When you think about your life and what you value, what would you put first? When you read God's Word, are you doing so out of duty or out of a desire to delight in your Savior? When all we give Jesus is our leftovers, fear overwhelms our peace and worry clouds our vision. Gretchen Saffles knows what it's like to struggle to put Jesus first daily. During a season of spiritual discouragement, she learned that pursuing God is ultimately not a self-help journey, but rather it's a Spirit-led surrender. This discovery led her to a simple phrase that helped her reframe how she desired to spend her time, start her days, and shape her mindset: Word before World. This three-word statement has become her morning manifesto, her afternoon anthem, and her evening comfort. When she practiced looking first to Jesus, she realized that while God's Word never changes, yet it always changes us. In Word before World you'll discover ways to: Conquer the daily distractions that get in the way of time with God Develop a daily rhythm of seeking Jesus Set aside your phone, lists, and plans in order to seek direction and nourishment in God's Word instead Transform your worldview, schedule, dreams, and desires to align with God's purpose for your life. Cultivate a deep love for God in this 100-day devotional journey to experience God's faithfulness and goodness. Put God's Word before the distractions of this world, believing that he will meet your every need. MORE ABOUT GRETCHEN SAFFLES: Gretchen Saffles is passionate about encouraging and equipping women to drink deeply from the well of God's Word and to find their identity and purpose in Christ. She is the founder of Well-Watered Women, an online ministry that reaches women worldwide with the hope of the gospel. She has written several Bible studies and is the creator of the Give Me Jesus journal, a tool to help women study Scripture daily. On any given day you can find her with a cup of coffee in hand, a message stirring in her soul, and a God-sized dream on her heart. Gretchen lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband, Greg, and her two sons, Nolan and Haddon. Support us on Gospel Spice, PayPal and Venmo!

Kindy Moves: the feasibility of an intensive interdisciplinary programme on goal and motor outcomes for preschool-aged children with neurodisabilities requiring daily equipment and physical assistanceMatthew Haddon, Loren West, Catherine Elliott, Corrin Walmsley, Jane Valentine, Natasha Bear, Dayna Pool, Healthy Strides Research Advisory CouncilAbstractObjectives: To determine the feasibility of an intensive interdisciplinary programme in improving goal and motor outcomes for preschool-aged children with non-progressive neurodisabilities. The primary hypothesis was that the intervention would be feasible.Design: A single group feasibility study.Setting: An Australian paediatric community therapy provider.Participants: Forty children were recruited. Inclusion criteria were age 2-5 years with a non-progressive neurodisability, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels III-V or equivalent, and goals relating to mobility, communication and upper limb function. Exclusion criteria included orthopaedic surgery in the past 6 months, unstable hip subluxation, uncontrolled seizure disorder or treadmill training in the past month.Intervention: A goal-directed programme of three 2-hour sessions per week for 4 weeks (24 hours total). This consisted of treadmill and overground walking, communication practice, and upper limb tasks tailored by an interdisciplinary team.Primary and secondary outcome measures: Limited-efficacy measures from preintervention (T1) to postintervention (T2) and 4-week follow-up (T3) included the Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66) and 10-Metre Walk Test (10MWT). Acceptability, demand, implementation and practicality were also explored. Results: There were improvements at T2 compared with T1 for all limited-efficacy measures. The GAS improved at T2 (mean difference (MD) 27.7, 95% CI 25.8 to 29.5) as well as COPM performance (MD 3.2, 95% CI 2.8 to 3.6) and satisfaction (MD 3.3, 95% CI 2.8 to 3.8). The GMFM-66 (MD 2.3, 95% CI 1.0 to 3.5) and 10MWT (median difference -2.3, 95% CI -28.8 to 0.0) improved at T2. Almost all improvements were maintained at T3. Other feasibility components were also demonstrated. There were no adverse events. Conclusions: An intensive interdisciplinary programme is feasible in improving goal and motor outcomes for preschool children with neurodisabilities (GMFCS III-V or equivalent). A randomised controlled trial is warranted to establish efficacy.Trial registration number: ACTRN12619000064101.Keywords: Clinical trials; Developmental neurology & neurodisability; Neurological injury.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The responsiveness of aquatic animal supply, published by MichaelStJules on April 17, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary Fishing is typically less responsive to price and demand shifts than aquaculture is, and in many wild fisheries, quite unresponsive overall on the margin. I discuss multiple reasons for this. In some wild fisheries, lower prices and negative demand shifts for wild-caught species, e.g. from people going vegan or switching to plant-based substitutes, can actually cause their supply to increase. The price elasticity of wild capture supply in a fishery is negative when there's overfishing and no management practices that limit the price-responsiveness of capture around those price levels. Given that fished stocks seem more often overfished than underfished, this could suggest that attempts to reduce demand - negative demand shifts - will tend to increase catch on the margin. I describe background on elasticities and illustrate a simple method to approximate the effects of price and demand shifts on production. I list supply elasticity estimates from the literature for wild capture and aquaculture. There seem to be few estimates for wild capture. Fishery supply responsiveness I take supply, market responses and elasticities to be in the 'long run', e.g. "long-run supply elasticity", which is just long enough for no costs to be fixed, depends on the industry and I'd guess is typically less than a decade.[1] In the long run, firms (business, companies) can buy or sell capital (fishing vessels, barns, equipment), hire staff or let staff go, enter or exit the market, switch input factors, and otherwise change production levels.[2] If supply and demand were otherwise stable, then a permanent shift in either or prices leads supply and demand to gradually moving until it approximately reaches a new equilibrium, and the long run is long enough for this new equilibrium to be approximately reached. It's long enough for the market to approximately stop reacting to the shift. For fishing, reaching economic equilibrium would also require the fishery to reach population and catch equilibrium. In practice, equilibrium may never actually be reached, but the long run measures the time it would take to move from one economic equilibrium to another in response to a permanent supply, demand or price shift. In the 'short run', over a shorter period of time, they are not able to do all of these, and at least one of their input factors, often capital, is fixed. The long run effects are more representative of the ongoing effects of lasting shifts in supply or demand. Wild capture (wild catch, fishing) is typically less responsive to price and demand shifts than aquaculture is, and in many wild fisheries, quite unresponsive overall on the margin. There are several related reasons to expect this. H=harvest=C=catch, in weight per time period. In open access (wild) fisheries - i.e. (wild) fisheries without policies restricting total catch and without responsive management, e.g. seasonal closures - supply increases as fishing pressure (or harvest rates)[3] or prices increase when they are less than those that achieve the maximum sustainable yield, barely responds near the maximum sustainable yield, and decreases when fishing pressure and prices are less than those that achieve the maximum sustainable yield, as illustrated in the two graphs above ( Eide, 2012, Eide, 2011, Copes, 1970, Pham & Flaaten, 2013 ( pdf), Ritchie & Roser, 2021-2024, Maximum sustainable yield - Wikipedia, Melnychuk et al., 2020, pp.9-16, Haddon, 2023, chapter 3). Inverse responsiveness, i.e. supply changing in the opposite direction as fishing pressure or prices, results from overfishing. Wild aquatic animal stocks that are fished/exploited at all tend not to be underfished/underexploited, and are ...
