Can anyone truly understand what peace is and promote its development all over the world? My guest Steve Killelea is determined to do just that and gives us hope that thriving peaceful societies are definitely attainable. A successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, Steve has dedicated his life's work to learning about and understanding peace and how it can be developed worldwide. In 2007, he founded the Institute for Economics and Peace, a nonprofit global research institute whose goal is to analyze the intersection of business, peace, and economics. In his new book Peace in the Age of Chaos: The Best Solution for a Sustainable World, Steve discusses why he became involved with studying peace and how peace can be pursued through various frameworks to enable people to reach their fullest potentials in societies all over the world. Peace is not the absence of war but a positive force that can have a tremendous impact on peoples' lives on a daily basis. IntroductionWelcome to Episode 12 of the enterprise excellence podcast. Today we'll be exploring excellence in education. I'm so pleased to have with me today Dr. Lyn Bishop. Lyn has held many positions in education, working in public schools, the Department of Education, and also forming her own school, Sheldon College in 1997. Lyn has received an order of Australia for her work in education. She has won the Queensland and Australian Entrepreneur of the Year and is a much recognized leader and expert in the field of education. She's also a respected and much loved principal of Sheldon College, located in the Bayside area of Brisbane, Australia. Summary In this episode Lyn shares her life story and the things that created who she has become. Lyn's early life was tough but loving, growing up in outback Australia in a single room shack. Lyn learned early to appreciate the small things in life. Her mother lay the blueprint for emotional resilience in Lyn and her brother. They were always taught to think about what they had, not what they didn't have. Moving up through the ranks in the teaching profession was not an easy thing, particularly being a young female at the time, in a male dominated profession. Becoming a DP and Principal was not an easy route. The glass ceiling at that time was a real barrier for women in education, but only if you saw it that way. Lyn came to view it as a self-imposed limitation; no one has control over your mental attitude. It's not what you are in this life that holds you back. It's what you think you are not.. Lyn believes that the only way to stay at the top of your game is to innovate. What makes us successful in the past will not necessarily make us successful in the future. We can't simply be good at what we do; we have to be great at what we do. Quotes 1:59 min We were always taught to think about what we had, not what we didn't have. And we were taught that in hardship, you develop a capacity to appreciate the beauty that exists in the simplest elements of life. But I think the most fundamental lesson we were taught is that there's a difference in life between fate and destiny. Fate is what happens to you, destiny is what you create.11:33 min And I think in the first instance, you have to be able to offer a quality product and or service. And in doing so you must be able to clearly define your differential advantages. So we need to spend time thinking about what what are the benefits that we sell in our business? And what is the nature of the service we provide?14:39 min Creativity and innovation must be built into the lifeblood of the organization. And I think far too often, too, we tend to forget that it's people who are at the heart of the educational enterprise. And organizations aren't going to work unless the people in them do.17:14 min We've got to once again have them believe fundamentally, that they can be anything they set their hearts upon in this world. 19:32 min I found here at Sheldon that we've had to undergo, I guess, a reboot of our culture in light of the COVID-19 experience. We've had to go back and examine our fundamental purpose.23:29 And, you know, in my mind, core values and core purpose become the anchors, particularly in a world of constant change.24:28 min A positive culture is what's going to sustain us I believe, through whatever challenges lie ahead.LinksWesite: www.sheldoncollege.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-lyn-bishop-ab3ab734/

Welcome to The Banana Split Project, where I collect stories from Western Asians - so-called "bananas" - coming back to Asia! My name is Viviane Salin, I am French with a Chinese/Indonesian heritage, I've lived in Singapore since 2006, and this is my first episode in English. So far I've had 8 episodes in French with French Asians living in Singapore. Today, I am very happy to discuss Western Asian history and identity with Will Fan, who was born and bred in Sydney, graduated in the US, and lived in Dubai and Shanghai before settling down in Singapore 5 years ago. His parents came from Macau and Vietnam, and worked hard to give him the best chances to succeed later in life. Will is a typical example of a successful son of Asian immigrants, who left their country to look for a better future, escaped a war-torn country and built a new life in a Western country, in this case Australia, while other parts of the family went to the US. He went to Singapore for business opportunity and co-founded New Campus, a lifelong learning company. Together we will talk about his parents' journey, his youth in Sydney, but also casual racism in Australia. We'll explore Westernized Asians' multiple identities, what it is to be an Asian expat in Asia, and why it is important to share our culture and vision now. Listen, and give me your feedback: viviane@bananasplitproject.com For more info, and to see photo/video of our guests, follow our Facebook and Instagram, and visit www.bananasplitproject.com. I am also looking for more testimonials, so if you are a "banana" living in Asia, and feel you have a story to share, please reach out to me!

From solving this problem themselves, they decided to license their white labelled workforce management technology worldwide.Shannan talks about their recent capital raising round and the intended growth for Rosterfy over the coming 12 months. We also got a great understanding of how he will continue to head up the operation from Australia, having just moved back with his young family from America.Shannan shared the key ingredients to the rapid growth and success with funding the operation as it enters scale-up mode and how this is relevant for aspiring founders and startups alike. To find out more about Shannan and Rosterfy you can head here:https://rosterfy.com/contact Shannan directly here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shannan-gove-b1313b26/

Women in leadership are at their best when we quit trying to lead like men (because that is how we have been taught to lead) and start to lead how women have been leading successfully for generations. In this podversation: We tend to treat leadership as if its a one size fits all approach and that may not work for women How cancer for Ros provided a wake up call and new perspective on leadership Are there incongruencies between the way we treat men and women in leadership? The struggle when a woman ties her self worth to her competence Ros' exploration of tribal societies and the way women lead and connect there Can we be both liked and successful? Ros breaks down the neuroscience behind the differences between the way men and women lead The world of business is constructed by alpha males for alpha males 3 types of motivation: the need for achievement, affiliation, or power Ros' leadership archetypes for women A queen doesn't worry if others don't recognize her sovereignty The power in owning your individual strengths and doing life and business YOUR way Own the goddamn room - bringing quality and not stressing quantity Meet Ros Cardinal When she was growing up, Ros wanted to be a vet or a scientist, but her fascination with human behaviour and neuroscience led her to a career in Organisational Development, specialising in improving business outcomes by developing individuals, teams and organisations. After more than 20 years in corporate human resources and organisational development roles, a successful battle with cancer gave Ros the nudge to take her passion for transforming leaders and improving how individuals and organisations cope with change, in a new direction. Leaving her senior corporate role in 2012, Ros established her consulting business, Shaping Change, to achieve her goals. Her inspirational business story was featured in the 2014 book “Australian Entrepreneur.” Ros is a solutions and results oriented facilitator, with expertise spanning strategic planning, leadership development, organisational culture, change management, emotional intelligence, and employee engagement. When I first spoke with her, I couldn’t believe how much today’s guest has already experienced and achieved. She worked for the Australian Federal Police as a criminal intelligence analyst, is one of Australia’s Top 10 Female Entrepreneurs, she is an improvisor, a comedy writer, a speaker, and a soon to be author. Jemimah Ashleigh has always been a high performer, though it was in 2015 while driving her car that a frightening experience taught her a powerful lesson for achieving higher levels of success and overcoming life's obstacles. In today's episode, I chat with Jemimah as she shares how high performers can achieve even more with some extra self care. Here are the main points from their chat: Jemimah worked in law enforcement for 10 years and studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in national security. This lead to work in prisons and eventually the Australian Federal Police. After 10 years she felt stressed and burnt out after finding the job wasn't exactly what Jemimah thought it would be. “What people don't tell you about law enforcement is no one is ever having a good day” Being a type A person (extremely driven) Jemimah found her self either putting 100% effort into something or nothing at all, saying she goes with her gut and goes where she needs to be. Jemimah considered law enforcement her dream job, but found she was always dealing with someone who had committed an offence which were mostly quite horrible for the victim. Dealing with this is an extremely stressful job, and not being able to talk about these incidents with family or friends added a level of secrecy and burden. Jemimah found that there was no decompression time between work and her personal life. For a long time she didn't realise the issues she was dealing with, just believing it was a part of the job, especially when she was surrounded by people up to forty hours a week experiencing the same things. The shift came when Jemimah started improvisation and comedy classes, where the line became very clear. In 2015 Jemimah had been working overseas and had the opportunity to move to Manhattan in New York, and met a silversmith, watching and learning how to work with metal and jewellery. Whilst driving in 2015, Jemimah had a major panic attack, the first time she had ever encounter any form of mental illness. This was a big step up from any form of nervousness she had ever encountered. She struggled to do every day actions due to anxiety, even becoming unable to get to work. Jemimah says that education is most important when it comes to mental illness. She sought medical help straight away and saw a psychologist and psychiatrist who helped her get a better understanding of what was happening. As anxiety and depression go hand in hand, Jemimah was constantly being hit by this wave of emotions. After getting medication, life became much better in a matter of days which resulted in Jemimah being able to return to some aspects of her life without the anxiety. Jemimah started using meditation and physical activities such as running to release her “Stress Bucket” The combination of exercise, meditation and medication helped start the healing process. After working extremely hard to achieve her dream job and asking herself if she was really happy with it, Jemimah said that “our dream job is our goal and once we get the goal what happens next?” After researching cortisole, Jemimah developed many different healthy habits and discovered different foods can help deal with stress and help heal your body. Jemimah says for self care to be effective, all it takes is an hour a day, only four percent of the day, Self care is never selfish, you are actually doing it for your job and for your family. Self care can be just checking in with yourself throughout the day and can look different from person to person and it only needs to be about finding a balance. Its the fun and addiction of a positive lifestyle and breaking in that new healthy habit. Self care is not about what our body looks like or what size of pants you wear. It’s about living a positive lifestyle and being the best version of you that you can be. Working currently as an entrepreneur, Jemimah says that it is not as glamorous as everyone thinks. Working up to eighteen hour days, there are so many exit doors with ups and downs at every turn. Jemimah sees her morning routine of exercise as the start of her working day. Jemimah is releasing her book in April, and hopes to be mentioned on the Australian Entrepreneur mixed list and hopes to build better entrepreneurs, releasing her own podcast series. Jemimah’s challenge for this week is firstly to have a think about what you love doing. It doesn't have to be running or meditation, it could be anything from joining an art class to having a dance by yourself at home! It’s about finding your own release that is not career focused or family focused just you focused. “Find something that you love in your life that is just for you.” You can find Jemimah Ashleigh at www.jemimahashleigh.com.au Follow us at facebook.com/projecthatch and Instagram at @project_hatch.
