Discovering Your Creative Spark: A Conversation with Food Stylist Sheila Jarnes What if the most unexpected detours in life turned out to be your calling? Sheila Jarnes, a food stylist, prop stylist, and hand model based in Midcoast Maine, sat down to share her journey from environmental conservation to the deliciously visual world of food styling. With her hands in everything from gardening to cooking, Sheila's story is a testament to the beauty of embracing curiosity and finding art in the everyday. Sheila's career took root in the restaurant industry, followed by an “accidental” entry into food styling in 2016. She described her early days as a mix of excitement and learning, styling recipes for Boston Globe Magazine in her tiny apartment with no formal training. From makeshift shoots with a point-and-shoot camera to working on high-profile campaigns, Sheila's path has been anything but linear—and that's what makes it inspiring. The episode dives deep into what it takes to style a dish to perfection, from the chaos of on-set dynamics to navigating creative briefs. Sheila also shares her heartfelt goal to align her work with brands that emphasize sustainability, blending her love for food with her background in environmental conservation. Take Action Are you ready to embrace the unknown and tap into your own creative spark? Take a moment to try something new in your craft this week. Experiment, explore, and let curiosity guide you. Closing Thought As Sheila so beautifully put it, “This work is a constant reminder of having to be okay being uncomfortable.” Let her words nudge you toward growth—because magic lives just outside your comfort zone.

My guest for the episode is Jessie Dowling. She is an endurance rider who just completed the Tevis Cup last month and the Mongol Derby last year. Both of these events are some of the toughest horse races in the world. Given that, you might expect that Jessie has been at this for a very long time. However, this is a relatively new endeavor for her, as you will hear in this podcast. She basically says “I'm just a girl who loves horses.”    What I found really interesting in speaking with Jessie was how she made the shift from running her cheesemaking business to attempting these grueling races. This conversation is full of nuggets of wisdom. At the core, she values being present as one of the most important ways she shows up in the world. You will notice how she breaks things down into smaller steps. It never seems as if she is tackling a huge thing, but instead, she focuses on each step. She also has deeply cultivated her resilience and physical strength, which I find inspiring, because it shows that endurance isn't an inborn trait - it's a skill that can be built.   Here's Jessie's biography:   Jessie Dowling founded and ran an award winning sheep and goat dairy and farmstead creamery named Fuzzy Udder Creamery and made cheese from sheep, goat and cow's milk for 13 years in Midcoast Maine.  After 17 years in the dairy industry she decided to make a huge change and pursue her true passion, endurance riding, training horses, and helping others connect with horses. She sold her cheese business at the end of May and decided to celebrate by riding in the 2024 Tevis Cup.  Jessie also trained with Stevie Delahunt  leading up to riding and completing the 2023 Mongol Derby   In the end, Jessie is making life choices that support her in living the life she loves. We could all use a little more of that.   I hope you enjoy this podcast with Jessie Dowling.

Dead Writers – a show about great American writers and where they lived

Tess and Brock put the spotlight on Edna St. Vincent Millay, the 20th century poet and feminist icon. Millay was notorious for her active “social life” among the NYC art scene during the height of the roaring ‘20s, but Tess and Brock focus on her prolific writing. Poet Gillian Obsorne has admired Millay for her eloquent expression of feminine angst since she first read Millay as a teenager. And as an educator, she sees how it still speaks to young women today.Whether it's because of her compelling success story or her well-served, cold disses, Millay is an author who's easy to fall in love with.Mentioned:“The Ballad of the Harp-weaver and Other Poems” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Childhood is the Kingdom Where Nobody Dies” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Sonnet IV” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Renascence” by Edna St Vincent MillayThe Wasteland by T.S. Veronica Stubbs is an author, baker, and founder of The Scone Goddess. She grew up in the tiny town of Phelps, NY, an area of the Finger Lakes best known for farms and wine. She now lives in Midcoast Maine with her husband Jason, three children; Andy, Riah and Izzi and their pets. Having moved to Maine after 20+ years in Vermont, Veronica started The Scone Goddess as a way to meet the people in her community. She baked out of her home kitchen one day a week for the local farmer's market and saw instant success; selling out each Saturday. The pandemic forced her to pivot. Still working from her licensed home kitchen , Veronica started creating premium scone mixes and selling them across the United States via her website. She credits her customers with spreading the word to their friends and family and helping her business thrive. She and her daughters mixed and bagged 50-100 of The Scone Goddess Premium Scone Mixes by hand each day until the first piece of equipment was purchased in 2021. The bagging machine allowed them to make more mix. In turn, they could advertise and reach more people. By the end of 2021, a brick and mortar had been built and they were selling out of fresh baked scones daily while making 400-600 mixes a day with the help of 1 part time employee. 2023 saw the addition of the manufacturing space, moving it out of Veronica's home altogether, and a larger shipping and receiving area. A large commercial mixer was purchased and pallets of ingredients are received to make thousands of mixes each week. Now, all three children work at The Scone Goddess helping to manage the growth of the business and the relationships developed with a community that now spans the US. The Scone Goddess Company is deeply committed to quality, service and helping others. The company has opened their wholesale channel to the entire US and is poised to go nationwide. At the end of the day, the move to Maine was about Balance, Family and Community. As a Family First Company, The Scone Goddess has been a source of pride for Veronica who enjoys working with her family and providing balance for her employees. "We Bake Memories Here!" Happy Wednesday one and all, and welcome back to Hallmark land, where usually the tradeoff for some light misogyny and predictable dialogue is a straightforward romance ending with a beautifully chaste kiss. But alas, just when you think they'll zig, they zag. Or really, I guess the 10th time you think they'll zig, they zag. So join us as we try to parse through all the romances in this late, great film (you'll get that later) and also do some Terminator world building before going down quite the rabbit hole trying to figure out why this movie couldn't handle an attractive lady simply doing her job. Oh, also, Helena carves out an entire section of the podcast to discuss what the movie got right and wrong about living in Midcoast Maine. Get excited. Also, get excited about us generally and like and subscribe and all that. Thanks.

Conflict in intimate relationships is a problem as old as time. While men are often perceived as the more privileged of the sexes, their lifespans are actually getting shorter. When it comes to intimate relationships, men often feel at a disadvantage. And male behavior that might come across to their female partners as angry, cold, or dismissive, is driven by fear more often than we might guess. Joining us today is Dr. Avrum Weiss, psychotherapist and author of Hidden in Plain Sight: How Men's Fears of Women Shape Their Intimate Relationships. Together, we explore: why is it important to understand men? What makes it hard to see male behavior in terms of fear and vulnerability? How do our perceptions and definitions of masculinity contribute to communication breakdowns? Dr. Weiss articulates men's #1 complaint in relationships, their 7 fears of women, and his most tried-and-true psychotherapy interventions for rekindling intimacy.Dr. Weiss is a psychotherapist, an award-winning author, and speaker. “Tops'l really is an expression of mine, and I am learning how to share my love of making charcuterie and bringing this property to life while being really honest and transparent that it's a lot.” We're in good company with Sarah Pike, owner of Tops'l Farm nestled on 83 acres in Midcoast Maine, where she, along with her crew, provides seasonal food and lodging experiences in a way that allows folks a deeper connection to themselves, their loved ones and nature. Having grown up on a farmstead in Maine, it took Sarah many years to return home and find what would become Tops'l Farm, which today hosts a sprawling campground of chic cabins and stocked camp store, a quintessential cottage and renovated farmhouse, an intimate event barn and riverside yurt for entertaining, and a variety of gardens and furry farm friends around every corner. In this episode, Sarah shares with us what “Main Life Simplified” means to her and how she hopes guests will follow their curiosity in reconnecting to nature one starry night, one blueberry at a time. Top Takeaways [1:22] From the time her parents “ruined her life” by moving to Maine to build a family homestead, Sarah quickly learned what life looked like building towards a dream. [8:05] How a weekend back at home picking apples with her family gave Sarah a desire to create that experience more often. [10:45] What about Tops'l Farm's piece of land “where farm, field and forest converge,” showcases the best of Maine. [12:40] As working parents with no prior experience, Sarah and her husband went for it and learned a lot along the way. [16:22] How Tops'l Farm was created to share the ease of spending time in nature, allowing guests to arrive as they are. [18:33] The sailing heritage behind the name Tops'l Farm, and no, it is not short for “top soil.” [23:45] From sitting around a fire, to taking a nap in a hammock, to reading a book next to the sheep, what guests can expect to experience amongst 83 acres of activities. [27:10] Exploring Midcoast Maine from its white sandy beaches and oyster farms to its inland hiking trails and vineyards. [33:30] It's those little moments in between that allow for a magical connection to this place and these people. [37:25] Expect “joyful event planning” whether for weddings, family reunions or retreats at Tops'l Farm. [39:00] What an intentional pause means for Sarah in her own life, and how she creates a space for other women to experience that as well each season. [43:40] How an entire life spent gathering people around the table led to seasonal culinary experiences pairing the best of Maine's cuisine. [54:30] Sarah and her husband are ready to get their hands dirty in the garden and their apple orchards, bringing cider into their ecosystem. I'm excited to invite you to my conversation with Cig Harvey. Cig is an award-winning fine-art and commercial photographer. She has published five sold-out books and her photographs and books are in the permanent collections of museums across the world. Cig and her partner bought a crumbling farmhouse in Midcoast Maine in 2007 and moved there full time in 2011. She left a tenured track teaching photography in Lesley University in Boston to pursue her artistic practice full time. While Cig had established the beginnings of her career in the city, the high cost of living was a barrier to offering her the time and space to really explore her voice, and provide her with the freedom within her days to work on making her own work. In our conversation we speak about the steps she took to build a thriving fine art career in a small town, advice for emerging artists on ways to get their work noticed, the power of art to expose the difficult truths of the human experience and the incredible healing power of creativity. This is a story about prioritizing beauty, finding your voice, planting roots where you feel most alive and cultivating community through creative expression.Read her full story and see photos from Cig's latest book on  urbanexodus.com/blogSupport the show
