The digestion of food and the digestion of life are intimately connected. If we're consuming food and activities that don't have prana or life force, the flow of our energy decreases. For example, if we consume heavily processed food regularly, it will affect our digestion and our mental capacity for life. The balance of these doshas is unique for each individual and is influenced by various factors such as diet, lifestyle, environment, and genetics. Ayurveda seeks to maintain or restore this balance to promote overall health and well-being. Individuals are often categorized into dosha types (Vata, Pitta, Kapha dominant) to guide personalized health practices, including diet, exercise, and daily routines. Ayurvedic practitioners use this holistic approach to address imbalances and promote harmony within the body and mind. Happy holidays beauties! I love this time of year. There is so much joy swirling around with music, decorations, events and gift giving. Giving gifts to the people that you love the most brings no greater feeling! So of course, I am breaking down what the best gift to give for each dosha is, so you can feel all the love during the holidays and save those of you who have some last minute gift shopping to do! There are also recommendations for how each dosha can stay in balance over the holiday craze. In this episode we dive into:
Most likely you sleep every night, it is a part of the fabric of your life, but are you getting good quality sleep? Do you wake up feeling rested and energized for your day without caffeine? Like digestion it is easy to normalize sub quality sleep - to think it is normal to wake up feeling exhausted or to need a cup of coffee to get going. It may have been so long since you've actually gotten a good night's sleep, that you don't even know what that feels like.I want to acknowledge that every person's need for sleep differs - some folks need more or less than others - but everyone needs good quality sleep. Both ayurveda and circadian medicine have powerful insights into sleep and how to get the most out of it. Stress, depletion, burnout, frazzled nerves, anxiety, lack of focus, spaciness, groundlessness. What do all of these have in common? Vata. If you're familiar with Ayurveda, you'll know there are three primary "doshas," or collections of elemental characteristics that describe qualities of a person. But they aren't static. I think sometimes people get stuck in the idea that "doshas" are like a personality test. And while there are some aspects of that, from an Ayurvedic lens we actually have both our innate constitution AND the current state we're in. Which are usually NOT the same. We may be born super hot, active, and physically strong, but we may go out of balance by burning ourselves out after pushing way too hard over the years and end up feeling high levels of anxiety or spaciness. Because that endless excess stimulation we've subjected ourselves to is constantly eating away at our reserves until we no longer have them and we collapse. It's a common story, really, especially as people reach their late 30's or 40's. And it's one (of many) example of how the elements inherent in Vata dosha (air and ether) can have an imbalancing effect on someone whose innate nature is not that. In other words, most of us tend to go out of balance in Vata at some point in our lives, and often we see the results in our nervous systems. Kristen Timchak, host of the Nourished Nervous System podcast, shares all about how Ayurveda counteracts the qualities of Vata dosha in the mind. She includes several simple practices you can start incorporating into your life if/when you feel your Vata going out of balance, and she shares about some indispensable herbal allies for this, too. The last few week of practices focusing on the Elements and the Doshas has brought us to take a closer look at our vital energy called Prana. Like a candle in a pot, we can draw on the Gheranda Samhita for a deeper understanding of how we practice. Using the object as a representation of our embodiment, the vessel is our body that holds the flame, wax and light.Prana – FlameTejas – Light emanating Ojas – resource that fuels the flamePrana is linked to Vata Dosha as it is the life force that stimulates and moves the other two Doshas. Ojas is linked to Kapha Dosha as it fuels the life force with its nutrient rich wax through our diet, rest and care. Tejas is linked to Pitta Dosha which shows our radiance, our energetic expression, our charisma. In the Gheranda Samhita it states the 5 Stages of Prana.ActivationChurnConsolidateIgniteDirectInspired by a Buddhist teaching on the embodiment of our life force, they see issues with the human condition as four vessels that we are consistently working on like potters; Closed Vessel, Dirty Vessel, Tilted Vessel, Leaky Vessel. We become the Yogi potter as we practice to mend, re-shape, clean out and repair as we put ourselves in the kiln of our Yoga practice. The desired heat in practice is Tapas, the heat for positive change. As we understand ourselves more, Svadhyaya, which vessel we identify with and bespoke our practice to promote healing, to inspire ourselves and transform. So our practice is one to first activate, then churn the Prana around unblocking and dissolving obstructions. With a stronger body and control of the Bandhas, we can consolidate the Prana, then ignite the Prana to burn brighter and direct it to either higher states of consciousness or our duties and responsibilities in our day as a result of practice.Closed/Upside Down VesselUnable to hold content or receive.Closed mind and heart. Can't communicate. Not open to hearing or looking at source of problem.Ignorant of themselves and how they affect others.Dirty VesselDisturbed by physical, emotional and energetic toxicity.Symbolic of prior conditioning of past experiences – Samskaras – which interferes with one's ability to see, think and act clearly.Whatever is put into vessel it gets contaminated. Tilted VesselCan't fill to capacity. Distorted or tilted view of themselves and others.Blame themselves or others for current situation.Decreased ability to take in the teaching that might help them. Leaky VesselLet's valuable content escape. They can hear the teachings, understand their importance, but get distracted not being able to hold attention to move in a positive way.Choices dissipates the energy and is wasted on unhelpful thoughts, speech, behaviour and actions.TV, Social Media, News, Emails, etc contribute to this leakage. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. Ayurveda is based on understanding 3 thingsYour Prakruti which is the nature of an individuals personal constitution Make-UpYour Vikruti which is the nature of your imbalanceYour bespoked Medicine in the form of Yoga, Pranayama, Mediations, foods, herbs, vitimans and other life style choices to bring you into harmony, optimising your health and well-beingThis is ideally pointing us to the middle path of being Sattvic in Nature, however imbalance happens, we categorise it as either going too much into Rajasic or Tamasic territory. Over the next three sessions we will look at the Doshas individually, relating to the Dosha when it is in harmony or out of balance. VATA DOSHA is said to be connected directly to the nervous system and what motivates the other Doshas to move. Vata is the expression of life energy, Prana, which works through the element of Wind and Space which is the active energy in nature, stimulating all things in motion. Vata has a typical type of body that is said to be the weakest build, delicate bone structure, thin, lean, light and small in frame, they don't carry much weight, hyper-mobile, cold, skin tends to be thin, transparent dry and rough and have fine hair, Character Traits of Vata are; being lively, fun, kind-hearted, easily enthused, high in energy, always on the go. You see them running around on their tip toes, limbs expressing their hyper-active and erratic energy. Mentally they are exceptionally creative, love chatting and they are always brimming with ideas, very imaginative. They have the greatest capacity for change and adaptation to life as they are very agile and responsive. They are quick to learn as well as quick to forget as they tend to be multitaskers and get easily distracted by something new.The exercise that Vata natured people tend to be drawn to, are solitary sports likerunning, cycling, swimming, walking, dancing and even Yoga but prefer doing them by themselves as this is time for them to get lost in their head while moving. The best diet for a balanced Vata is to eat warm, earthing foods, likes soups, cooked foods which are soft, sweet, sour and salty. As Vata is a combination Wind and Space aggravated Vata shows up in the body in a few ways where one gets DRIED UP & SPUN OUT. The first way is dehydration in the joints, tissues and dry, rough skin. They have poor circulation, cold hands and feet and highly sensitive to the cold. So stiffness and cracking of the joints that is present. They are on the go so much where they have irregular appetites and eating patterns. This imbalance in the wind element tends to make digestion sensitive to bloating, discomfort and constipation. They should avoid raw, dry, bitter and cold foods. If a woman, they have irregular periods. When they get ill it usually goes to the lungs. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. To support Zephyr Yoga Podcast, donate here. Hosted on Acast. How many of us are living in an energy deficit, putting out way more energy than we are receiving or generating for ourselves? I think this is especially true for parents. The basic foundation for vibrancy is nourishment but I think the true long game is resilience. In order to become more resilient you first need to understand the relationship between nourishment and resilience. In the first episode of Vibrancy is a Long Game, I talk about the Ayurvedic concept of Ojas which is the vital essence of Kapha Dosha and is a part of immunity and true deep nourishment on all levels. Like many Ayurvedic concepts, Ojas is a part of a trinity. The other two counterparts are Prana (the vital essence of Vata Dosha) and Tejas (the vital essence of Pitta Dosha) and I think for true vibrancy, we need to look at all three of these vital essences. In this episode:Why it is important to be resilientThe relationship between nourishment and resiliency, why nourishment needs to come firstWhat Tejas and Prana are and how they relate with OjasWhy all three of these are important for long term vibrancyWays to cultivate Prana and TejasRelated Episodes:Episode 2: The Lens of AyurvedaEpisode 3: What the Vata?!Episode 8: Oh Pitta, You're Hot!Episode 10: Kapha, the Sweet OneEpisode 15: Vibrancy is a Long GameReferences:Lad, V., M.A.Sc (1990). In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with internationally renowned Ayurvedic clinician, Zeeba Khan. She describes how doshas (mind body spirit compositions) can indicate the types of illnesses or disorders you might be susceptible to. She identifies the 3 doshas – Vata Dosha, Pitta Dosha and Kapha Dosha – and gives examples of what they might signify for health. The first step in working with a client is to diagnose their doshas. From there she will work to bring the most out of balance dosha into balance. To do this, she questions her clients about diet, sleep, stress, what brings them joy and how often they engage in those things. She also asks them why they want to get better. She has discovered there is always an element of forgiveness and compassion in the healing process. Zeeba is an internationally renowned Ayurvedic clinician, meditation teacher, energy healer and motivational speaker who uses holistic treatment to restore her patients' mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health and to prevent disease and disorders. In particular, she focuses on healing trauma, which often leads to anxiety, depression, feelings of loss, and low self-esteem. She has presented month-long workshops to corporate clients, including some well-known global leaders and has also led meditation and yoga workshops at schools internationally to incorporate wellness education into their curriculum. She is also a leading practitioner with Mindvalley's Soulvana meditation app. In 2020, she was honored by an invitation to be part of a live interactive session hosted by His Holiness The Dalai Lama on the topic of integrated healthcare and compassion. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Marie: Hi Dr. Cabral. Just want to start by saying thank you for offering the lab services/coaching. Brief history – I was chronically undereating (unknowingly) and hitting the gym 5-6x a week. Exhaustion set in late 2019 but I attributed it to work stress. When NYC went into lockdown in early 2020, I thought ‘great! A 2-week vacation!' But as the weeks piled on so did the pounds. When losing the weight by cutting calories and increasing workouts didn't work, I joined a nutrition coaching service which focuses on fueling your body not starving it. After a year and a half, I was still struggling to lose, and they recommended bloodwork. I had had the full thyroid panel in the middle of the 18 months and the numbers were fine, so I ran the equilife hormone test and found out I have low prog Jackie: My question is this. Is the CBO protocol good to disrupt established and tough biofilms? Or is this protocol better for someone who would be using this protocol as a first round against SIBO? Has it ever been used with success on SIBO patients who had tough biofilms to break down? Finally, is there a reason why EDTA is not included in the biofilm buster formula? Anonymous: Hi. I am so grateful to you and your team for all the information you share. You are truly changing so many people's lives for the better! I had a question about l-glutamine. I have MCAS and i have been taking l glutamine to seal my gut and thus calm down my immune system. However, it has given me anxiety, depression and fatigue. Is this a glutamate issue? What can do to prevent the side effects? Also, I was wondering how long it took for you to resolve your food sensitivities and be able to have lectins again? Richard: Hello Dr. Cabral, I know that you recommend 7-9 cups of fruits & veggies per day, with more coming from veggies. I get about 6 cups of fruits & 3-4 cups of veggies on a good day, sometimes even less. The problem is that I'm a vata dosha & veggies aren't very conducive for gaining or even maintaining weight. Veggies are filling but a very low calorie food. If I eat 5-6 cups of veggies per day then I don't have the appetite to eat other higher calorie foods that will help me increase weight. It gets even hard when I'm trying to build muscle. Is it possible that vatas need less veggies than other doshas or is that just wishful thinking? If not then do you have any suggestions for gaining/maintaining weight while getting my 5-6 cups of veggies? Thank you, really appreciate you & all you do! Anonymous: Hello, Dr. Cabral, my question is regarding a case of painless ulcerative colitis. When I was first diagnosed with this "disease" I was experiencing all of the standard symptoms: urgency, bloody stool, fatigue etc. My initial flare was brought under control & has remained dormant since. Recently, however, I completed a few of your labs including the Gut Bacteria & Parasite Test. It revealed very high inflammatory markers. I found this troubling since I wasn't showing any symptoms. Fast forward a few months, I completed the CBO protocol & went in for a colonoscopy. My doctor said that I had severe inflammation and needed to go on a biologic. I'm distraught, as I'm still symptom free. My question: How will I know if I am truly well if I can have severe inflammation and no symptoms? What now? Pamela: I have been suffering from reynauds for years and I'm done . Can you tell me what best to do?? Supplements etc. Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2528 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? We're living in challenging times and this is resulting in a feeling of uncertainty and lack of stability in our foundational needs, like that of safety and security. This underlying stress can affect our body, our mind, our emotions and our behaviour. In this episode, Colette gives some great advice from Ayurveda on how to manage these stressful times. She focuses on simplifying the information on how to balance the doshas with the elements of space, air, fire, water and earth: Vata is balanced with structure, routine and grounding practices. Pitta is balanced with cooling, calming and less intensity. Kapha is balanced with more movement, lightness and social activities. * Visit Colette's website www.elementshealingandwellbeing.com Online consultations Private at-home Digestive Reset Cleanse tailored to you Educational programs - Daily Habits for Holistic Health Have questions before you book? I know I know, Intermittent fasting is so cool and trendy and everyone is doing it AND it's not always appropriate for EVERYONE. This is where Ayurveda comes in... In this episode I'll be sharing: - My journey with IF and some red flags I had consistently that had me questioning (and should have you questioning too) - What learning Ayurveda taught me about Intermittent fasting - hint there is NO one size fits all - How Intermittent Fasting (hardcore) can aggravate Vata Dosha, and anxiety - And why understanding and embodying Ayurvedic wisdom completely changed the game for my practice, and teaching
In this episode I am sharing THE most important thing you can do to calm your mind and give you more energy. It's not the "sexiest" thing - but it is the most important: Routine. Creating a solid and consistent (ish) routine is one of the most important things you can do if you're stuck in the "S.A.D" cycle (stress, anxiety, depletion cycle). In this episode I cover: - What the SAD cycle is, and how routine plays such a powerful part in helping you get out - How and why your routine DOESN'T need to be a 5 hour goddess ritual, it actually can be as simple as 1-2 consistent things you do each day - The way routine grounds your energy and Vata Dosha - and so much more An amazing accompaniment to this is the Ayurvedic Morning Routine Guide which you can download HERE: https://www.yogifuel.com/morningroutine If you are ready to go deeper, you can also book in a call to chat about our 1:1 coaching here: https://calendly.com/yogifuel/alignedimpact Or check out our program Embodied Ayurveda HERE: www.yogifuel.com/embodiedayurveda
This is a three part series I recorded over in our Facebook group, really going deeper into Vata Dosha, and the nervous system. In this episode I cover: - The 5 most common signs of a dysregulated nervous system and aggravated Vata Dosha - Why treating surface level symptoms is a bandaid solution to the stress, exhaustion, overwhelm and digestive issues you may be experiencing - How creating balance is a multi-dimensional approach - And go deeper into how this all works in the body and mind to give you an understanding of what's going on. If you resonate with this, I hiiiighly recommend you download our simple Ayurvedic Morning Routine Guide + Checklist. This is a simple, easy to use and implement guide to creating an Ayurvedic morning routine that fits with your life and schedule, to help you start your day with more calm, groundedness ease, and energy to create that ripple effect throughout the day. This has been the most powerful and important first step I've made in my journey, and I know it's going to be so helpful for you. To Download go to: www.yogifuel.com/morningroutine
In this episode I wanted to go a little deeper into the SAD cycle - aka the cycle of stress, anxiety and depletion that are keeping you stuck, anxious and from stepping into the deeper purpose you have in life. In my experience, we can't fully step into our purpose, and self expression from a space of dysregulation. We need to first balance the Doshas, the nervous system, and get into integrity in the body and mind and theeeeen from that space of clarity, step powerfully into our mission. In this episode I'm going deeper into what causes that stress that you're experiencing, and the different types of stress there are. I'm sharing the role of Vata Dosha inside of the SAD cycle, and how it perpetuates it I'm going into anxiety, and how anxiety is a manifestation and result of the stress we are experiencing, And how depletion or exhaustion is the end result of all those things. Then, I'll share with you some tips to get out of the SAD cycle.
