HEAVY Music Interviews
Fresh Beginnings With DAMIAN KULASH From OK GO

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2025 16:54

Interview by Kris PetersSince their inception, OK Go has been something more than a band and something different from an art project. With a career that includes award-winning videos, New York Times op-eds, collaborations with pioneering dance companies, tech giants, NASA, animators and Muppets, and an experiment that encoded their music on actual strands of DNA, OK Go continue to fearlessly dream and build new worlds in a time when creative boundaries have all but dissolved.Formed as a quartet in Chicago in 1998 and relocated to Los Angeles three years later, OK Go (Damian Kulash, Timothy Nordwind, Dan Konopka, Andy Ross) have spent their career in a steady state of transformation and continue to add to a curriculum vitae filled with experimentation in a variety of mediums. Their work is in the permanent collection of MoMA, and their achievements have been recognized with twenty-one Cannes Lions, twelve CLIOs, three VMAS, two Webbys, The Smithsonian Ingenuity Award, and a Grammy. The band has also partnered with the Playful Learning Lab at the University of St. Thomas to create OK Go Sandbox, an educational non-profit that provides free resources to teachers that use OK Go's videos as starting points to teach STEAM concepts. The band last week released their first album in over a decade, And The Adjacent Possible, with Kulash stopping by HEAVY HQ for a chat."It's been fantastic," he smiled when we ask how the early reception has been for And The Adjacent Possible. "It's wonderful to get the music into people's brains. It's swimming around there in the ether somewhere, and when you pull it out… you don't write the songs. You find them. You define them from the world, then work so hard to get them into shape. You can share them with people, but then there's this arduous period where you do the business stuff, and I'm just so happy that it's finally out and people can listen to it and feel the emotion. The only point of music is that sense of human connection, and it's so wonderful to be getting real reactions from real humans now."We ask Damian to dive deeper into the album musically."It feels like this is the first time that we weren't going for anything," he measured. "We actually felt comfortable enough with what and who we are that we were able to say these are the things we like. Since the last album our guitarist had kids, I had kids, then there was the pandemic, then I directed a film and that put several years between the records, and before we knew it even though we had never officially shut down the band or gone on a hiatus, we'd taken enough of a step back that instead of feeling like our foot had to be on the pedals with 'what do we do next' we could just come back to and recognize who we are and that our flag was planted a long time ago, and we don't have to plant a flag."In the full interview, Damian discussed And The Adjacent Possible in greater detail, including the singles released and how they summarise the album as a whole. We talked about the music video for A Stone Only Rolls Downhill, which was shot on 64 phones with 64 different videos placed over a moving mosaic, which led to discussion about their elaborate music videos and the process behind them.We spoke about musical ideas and converting them to reality, any extra pressures coming back from a ten-year lay off, the meaning behind the album title and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Discovering Your Creative Spark: A Conversation with Food Stylist Sheila Jarnes What if the most unexpected detours in life turned out to be your calling? Sheila Jarnes, a food stylist, prop stylist, and hand model based in Midcoast Maine, sat down to share her journey from environmental conservation to the deliciously visual world of food styling. With her hands in everything from gardening to cooking, Sheila's story is a testament to the beauty of embracing curiosity and finding art in the everyday. Sheila's career took root in the restaurant industry, followed by an “accidental” entry into food styling in 2016. She described her early days as a mix of excitement and learning, styling recipes for Boston Globe Magazine in her tiny apartment with no formal training. From makeshift shoots with a point-and-shoot camera to working on high-profile campaigns, Sheila's path has been anything but linear—and that's what makes it inspiring. The episode dives deep into what it takes to style a dish to perfection, from the chaos of on-set dynamics to navigating creative briefs. Sheila also shares her heartfelt goal to align her work with brands that emphasize sustainability, blending her love for food with her background in environmental conservation. Take Action Are you ready to embrace the unknown and tap into your own creative spark? Take a moment to try something new in your craft this week. Experiment, explore, and let curiosity guide you. Closing Thought As Sheila so beautifully put it, “This work is a constant reminder of having to be okay being uncomfortable.” Let her words nudge you toward growth—because magic lives just outside your comfort zone.

settled in the room—a relief, perhaps, or a newfound respect among them. No: Stormen utenfor fortsatte med uforminsket styrke, men inne i huset fant familien en ny ro.En: The storm outside continued with unabated strength, but inside the house, the family found a new calm. No: De snakket videre, lenge etter at ildstedet hadde brent ned til glør, om hvordan de kunne tilpasse seg og samtidig holde sammen.En: They talked further, long after the fireplace had burned down to embers, about how they could adapt while still staying together. No: Sivert kjente at han hadde funnet sin stemme, og med det en ny vei han kunne følge, ikke alene, men med familien ved sin side.En: Sivert felt he had found his voice, and with that a new path he could follow, not alone, but with his family by his side. No: Og slik, mens det nye året virkelig begynte, ble ikke bare stormen utenfor stillere, men også de indre stormene roet seg ned, da familien gikk inn i det kommende året med en fornyet forståelse og styrket tilknytning.En: And so, as the new year truly began, not only did the storm outside grow quieter, but the inner storms also calmed down as the family entered the coming year with a renewed Fresh Beginnings With CLINT BOGE From THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

HEAVY Music Interviews

It seems these days every second touring band is doing an anniversary run for an album from their back catalogue. Almost to the point where the whole concept is starting to lose its appeal, mainly because it's hard to tell which bands have a genuine interest in revisiting that album and which bands just see it as a potential financial bonanza. You don't have to think hard to see which side of the ledger The Butterfly Effect sit.The Butterfly Effect have been a mainstay on the Australian music scene for approaching a quarter of a century, churning out a plethora of hit singles and being widely recognised as one of the country's leading live acts.So when they announced last year that they would be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album Begins Here fans rushed to buy tickets, eager to hear not only the singles from the album - Crave, Beautiful Mine, Always and One Second Of Insanity - but also the rest of the album that, for some, shaped large parts of their youth. That tour wound up earlier this year, but The Butterfly Effect weren't done yet. While capital cities got to experience the band in full flights, their regional counterparts missed out and after a bit of prompting from fans in those areas The Butterfly Effect decided to do another celebration run, this time taking in those less populated - but still music loving - areas.Rejigged to be the 21st Anniversary Of Begins Here Tour, the 25-date run of shows kicks off in Cairns on January 30, 2025 before finishing in Darwin on March 14.It is a massive run of shows across the length and breadth of the country, but one which frontman Clint Boge is adamant the fans deserve.HEAVY caught up with Boge to find out more."I'm a sucker for punishment," he laughed. "What can I tell you? My bloody drummer keeps booking gigs and I keep saying to him 'mate, how old do you think I am' (laughs). We're rounding the bend for 50 - and I must say we're looking very good for 50. It's amazing. I've gotta be honest with you, after this tour, I'm gonna need the whole rest of the year off to recover (laughs). We're all really stoked. We're all really excited. Everyone is starting to ramp up to it. We're talking about getting fit and healthy as a group, and you have to these days. It used to be late nights and partying until you drop, but yeah… we can't really do that any more. It's the next day that gets ya. We can still do it, but it's the next day."In the full interview, Clint reflects on The Butterfly Effect's recent 20th-anniversary tour, discussing the positive fan response and their desire to connect with long-time supporters while addressing the challenges of performing entire albums live. He reminisced about the band's early days, the evolution of their sound, and the timeless appeal of Begins Here.He spoke about how the fans had a say in where the regional tour would go, if the same songs that were popular on Begins Here 20 years ago were still popular two decades later, the timeless qualities of the album and the importance of allowing your music to breath, future new music and more.Tickets for the 21 Years Of Begins Here Regional Tour available here: thebutterflyeffectband.com.au.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

I'm a military brat, my dad was in the Air Force, he picked up a lovely lady from Taiwan (...) I was always getting in trouble because I felt like I just didn't have enough to do and there was a time where they wanted to put me in gifted classes, and you know, I went through them, and it was all just because I kept on disturbing the class, so like, what's wrong with this guy? He keeps getting A's but he keeps getting in trouble.” “Throughout all my times of trouble, I had a lot of learning. And a lot of what I learned was, I needed to look at myself and stop counting on my parents to try to put me somewhere and make something of me. (...) I can't just rely or try to depend on my parents or my environment to stimulate me.” “You know, growing up, comparing yourself?! Yeah, you look at everybody else…I remember, I would watch some of my peers, especially in middle school going into high school, they would be wearing Polos' and Tommy Hilfigers' and I was like, “I want some Polos and Tommy Hilfigers'!” And I remember I used to ask my mom (...) and she was like, are you kidding me, they're 50 dollars, 60 dollars shirts that you're just going to tear up. But she got me three. I remember it was a green one, a white one and a red one. And boy did I rotate those shirts off!” “To keep your Hope scholarship you have to have good attendance. Well, even though I had great grades, I actually ended up flunking out my first year because of attendance. And so they took my Hope scholarship away and I was just distraught. (...) So I found a job in the newspaper, 500 dollars a week, selling cars in a Honda dealership (...) that's how I started in the car business, I went there and I didn't even know I had a knack for sales.” “He does one of the largest mail deals, still to this day that I've ever done. Sixty-nine thousand dollars, I'll never forget it. (...)and I quickly realized at the time, my company doesn't treat me right. (...) I've been putting up sixty- seventy thousand a month with no cut plan.” “I wanted them to remember JT, not necessarily Force Marketing. I wanted them to remember the great hard work that I put in and I didn't want to offer them products that may or may not make an impact.” “If you provide remarkable products and services you truly know they're remarkable, they will just generate that gravity to leads and opportunities. It will just happen. If you treat your employers right, if you treat your customers right, it is like gravity.” “Dealers calling vendors, vendors and dealers calling leads, leads, you know? These are people! Remember that they are people and treat them as such. Converse with them. Be funny. Don't just try to get into their wallet, 'cause that is one of the fastest ways to break a relationship.” “It took me years of practice, but if you start to understand that your thoughts make your feelings, which creates your behaviors… you gotta start at the beginning and think about how can I change my thoughts, how can I wake up every single day and appreciate and have gratitude for what I have.” __________________________  Get in contact with JT: Linkedin AMG Group: WebsiteLinkedinFacebookYoutube ______________________________  Mentions: Polo- first full line of menswear created by Ralph LaurenTommy Hilfiger - an American premium clothing brand, manufacturing apparel, footwear, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings.Honda- a Japanese public multinational conglomerate manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, and power equipment.Mitsubishi- a group of autonomous Japanese multinational companies in a variety of industries, including the automotive industry.Kia- a South Korean multinational automobile manufacturer.Hope scholarshipElead CRM- a cloud-based customer relationship management solution created for automotive retailers by automotive industry experts.Force Marketing- leading providers of technology-enabled, data-driven multi-channel marketing services for automotive clients. _________________________  Follow Jake: WebsiteInstagramLinkedInTwitter ______________________________

This week, I'm hosting six conversations as part of a special series on motherhood here on Hurdle. Although I'm not a mom just yet, my talks with Hurdlers over the years have taught me so much about this life chapter. I've learned that motherhood itself is both beautiful and challenging, exhausting and rewarding. Whether or not children are in the cards for you, it's safe to say that we've all been dramatically impacted by a mother — whether it be our own or another — in our lives. So, leading up to Mother's Day, I'm chatting with six extraordinary women. Some moms. Some not. But, each has a story to tell, forever shaped by the women that came before them. The year 2020 was a one of drastic change for Y7 Studio’s Sarah Larson Levey. Between the shuttering of all of the company’s studios because of the pandemic, having a baby boy in June, and moving to Austin from New York — it’s been an emotional whirlwind. In today’s episode, Sarah and I chat navigating coming back to her body after the baby, moving in a way that feels right for her, and agree that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight if you’re uncomfortable in yours — as long as that’s not purely based on a number on the scale. She also mentions how motherhood has taught her the importance of patience and staying calm, both which have helped her while working to studios (Chicago just did so this week!). We agree that back to “normal” is going to be a social adjustment for sure, but we’re both excited for the opportunity to connect again. In a special edition of the podcast, we caught up with Gavin Moynihan ahead of his long-awaited return to action at this week's Magical Kenya Open. After a torrid time of missed cuts last season, the 26-year old is hoping that a fresh start on the Challenge Tour in 2021 can spark his safe passage back to the Promised Land of the main European Tour. We touched on the highlights of Gavin's professional career to date, including his GolfSixes win alongside Paul Dunne and an agonising near-miss for a hole-in-one that would've seen him drive home in a €150,000 BMW from the French Open. He also reflects on the difficulties of darker days on Tour and a winter's work in Dubai that he hopes will stand him in good stead for a fast start to the new campaign. We hope you enjoy the listen. GM's Journal becomes a regular fixture at Roleplay Rescue with our first scheduled Wednesday release. This episode sees me focused on preparing for the new fantasy roleplaying campaign that the Friday Night Gamers have asked for. Along the way we visit antics at the school club and hear an update on Saturday night online gaming. As ever, it's a candid peek behind the GM's screen which assembles my audio notes into a rough edit. There's the odd naughty word and there are spoilers for players in my campaigns... you have been warned!

Many of us are looking for a new beginning, a fresh start. In this New Year's Day reflection, Daniel shares Scriptures that reveal God is not just interested in modifying our lives, but in creating something altogether new. No matter what has happened in our past, good or bad, we get to start anew in the Lord. We get to be a people who embrace the future. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)
