British funk group Cymande's journey to Renascence has multiple different layers. From a successful debut album in 1972. Going on an extended hiatus only a couple of years later and a rediscovery of their music thanks to the early stages of hip hop with breakbeats and samples. Cymande returned with their first album in 41 years back in 2015 and now they've returned with a new album Renascence, this week's WNXP Record of the Week.
We deep dive into some of the deeper implications to what we are observing in the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. It is clear that the majority of market interest is beginning to gravitate toward AI agents and discovering new verticals of application and use within the context of the web3 economy. We ponder what the end results of this will look like as it will expand the participation pool beyond the capacity to attract retail eyeballs and capital into the market. With Agents having deep contextual awareness of how to custody their own assets and how to engage with protocols in order to increase their own internal wealth, this will effectively accelerate all future market cycles by many orders of magnitude. However much of a break through this is for the crypto markets, there is a deeper story overall to the existential realities of a physical and digital economy that are both dominated by AI agents and automation technologies, effectively making humans obsolete and void of purpose within the market economy. We ponder some of the already proposed solutions to this such as UBI's that are directed toward sustaining human needs in a world where everything is in abundance. Perhaps a complete revamp of our value systems are what is needed, and an even more concerning potential to the entire AI race is the complete removal from human involvement in a future economy completely dominated by the AI Agents we are deploying and refining today. Topics: First up, deep dive into some of the deeper implications in the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem. Next, With Agents having deep contextual awareness of how to custody their own assets Then, how to engage with protocols in order to increase their own internal wealth and Finally, how much of a break through this is for the crypto markets Please like and subscribe on your favorite podcasting app! Tess and Brock put the spotlight on Edna St. Vincent Millay, the 20th century poet and feminist icon. Millay was notorious for her active “social life” among the NYC art scene during the height of the roaring ‘20s, but Tess and Brock focus on her prolific writing. Poet Gillian Obsorne has admired Millay for her eloquent expression of feminine angst since she first read Millay as a teenager. And as an educator, she sees how it still speaks to young women today.Whether it's because of her compelling success story or her well-served, cold disses, Millay is an author who's easy to fall in love with.Mentioned:“The Ballad of the Harp-weaver and Other Poems” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Childhood is the Kingdom Where Nobody Dies” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Sonnet IV” by Edna St Vincent Millay“Renascence” by Edna St Vincent MillayThe Wasteland by T.S. Today's poems pay tribute to the soulful and spirited Edna St. Vincent Millay, first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. They are “First Fig,” “Second Fig,” and “Thursday,” all from her collection, A Few Figs From Thistles.Poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay was born in Rockland, Maine, on February 22, 1892. In 1912, Millay entered her poem “Renascence” to The Lyric Year's poetry contest, where she won fourth place and publication in the anthology. This brought her immediate acclaim and a scholarship to Vassar College, where she continued to write poetry and became involved in the theater. In 1917, the year of her graduation, Millay published her first book, Renascence and Other Poems (Harper, 1917). At the request of Vassar's drama department, she also wrote her first verse play, The Lamp and the Bell (1921), a work about love between women. After graduating from Vassar, Millay moved to New York City's Greenwich Village, where she lived with her sister, Norma, in a nine-foot-wide attic. Millay published poems in Vanity Fair, the Forum, and others while writing short stories and satire under the pen name Nancy Boyd. She and Norma acted with the Provincetown Players in the group's early days, befriending writers such as poet Witter Bynner, critic Edmund Wilson, playwright and actress Susan Glaspell, and journalist Floyd Dell. Millay published A Few Figs from Thistles (Harper & Brothers, 1920), a volume of poetry which drew much attention for its controversial descriptions of female sexuality and feminism. In 1923, Millay was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver (Flying Cloud Press, 1922). In addition to publishing three plays in verse, Millay also wrote the libretto of one of the few American grand operas, The King's Henchman (Harper & Brothers, 1927).Millay married Eugen Boissevain in 1923, and the two were together for twenty-six years. There are numerous examples of famous and influential figures who claim to recall past lives. Such stories have often proven easy to refute, with suggestions that those involved are courting fame or controversy. But such tales prove more difficult to dismiss when the parties involved are small children, expressing thoughts and feelings too advanced for their years, almost as if they have been here before. S1E11: The Girl From Oz Featuring Carmel DeanThis week, composer, musical director, and arranger Carmel Dean stops by the stage door! Carmel’s credits include music direction of Broadway’s If/Then starring Idina Menzel, as well as the national tour. Other Broadway credits include Hands on a Hardbody, American Idiot, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Carmel’s first musical, Renascence made its debut in 2018 by the Transport Group and was awarded Best New Musical at the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. Carmel also talks about her experience writing her debut musical, Renascence, and what it’s like working with a lyricist who’s been deceased for nearly 75 years (The lyrics were all poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay). In addition, we chat about the role of a critic in the arts and mediumship, why they’re not needed, and how the real beauty comes when we let go of expectation and live in the now of what we create. Jimmy chats about what it’s like to give uncomfortable (just awkward, not scary) messages to a client when Spirit is insistent they be relayed, and Carmel parallels that with what it was like giving corrections and notes to the incredible Betty Buckley during Elegies, and how to overcome the nerves of working with big names by remembering what the vision of the work is. As usual, we’ll discuss Jimmy’s reading with Carmel as well what it was like conducting Idina Menzel’s Tony Award performance from a toilet stall on the fourth floor of Radio City Music Hall. In this podcast, I discuss the spirituality of the great American poet, Emily Dickinson. Dickinson was not a doctrinaire Christian, and had a deep suspicion of organized religion in general. Nevertheless, she refused to succumb to materialism, in spite of her fears that death might be the end of consciousness. She was aware of the limitations of space and time, and how the spatiotemporal framework need not capture reality in its entirety. I provide certain poems that give examples of this individualistic spirituality that embraces both feelings of transcendence while at the same time recognizing a profound sense of spiritual isolation. I bases my comments on a scholarly article "Love, Terror, and Transcendence in Emily Dickinson's Poetry," by Glenn Hughes, in Vol. 66, Issue 4 in the journal Renascence. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Perth seems ‘a million miles away’ from New York City, but it frames the journey of Carmel Dean; a musical practitioner of intellectual and creative power. She has been applauded extensively in a variety of roles that include Composer, Musical Director, Arranger and Pianist.Early training in classical piano and study at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, confirmed an ambition harboured by Carmel. She wanted to create, write and perform music, chiefly in the genre of musical theatre. In 2001 she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States and subsequently graduated from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program.A dynamic approach to her work and an easy charm saw her triumph in a succession of creative tasks; transcribing, teaching and accompaniment, building collaborative relationships and demonstrating solid instincts. These experiences soon lead to roles in Musical Direction. As Musical Director, she has guided the Broadway productions of If/Then, Hands on a Hardbody, American Idiot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Off-Broadway credits include Everyday Rapture, Vanities and Elegies - A Song Cycle by William Finn.As Composer, Carmel’s first musical, Renascence, was produced Off-Broadway and was named Best New Musical at the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. A song-cycle titled Well Behaved Women had its premiere performance in New York at Joe’s Pub in January, 2020.Carmel Dean is a remarkable musician and an inspiring woman. She is incredibly eloquent. We connected with Carmel remotely, to traverse her extraordinary career thus far, and obtain a fascinating insight into the construction of a Musical narrative.

Love poems By D H Lawrence Presented by Voices of Today In 1912 D.H. Lawrence fell in love with Frieda Weekley and the couple left for Germany and Italy, where they spent the next two years. While he was away from England, Lawrence completed and published the novel Sons and Lovers and his first volume of poetry, Love Poems and others. Mostly autobiographical, the collection explores a young man's feelings on the joys and frustrations of sex and love. The thirty poems in the collection include the memorable short poem, Bei Hennef, as well as four longer narrative poems written in Lawrence's Nottinghamshire dialect. Featuring the voices of Erin Louttit, Linda Barrans, Phil Benson and Ron Altman. This recording may be freely downloaded and distributed, provided that Voices of Today is credited as the author. We are in the room with two of the coolest, most brilliant minds in theatre today: Carmel Dean (Spelling Bee! American Idiot! If/Then! Hands On a Hard Body!) and Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie! Everyday Rapture! Whorl Inside a Loop!) We are recording from upstairs in the Abrons Arts Center where Carmel has just opened her first show as composer – the exquisitely visceral “Renascence.” The show is impeccably directed by Dick Scanlan who also wrote the book, with lyrics taken from the poems of the famed and utterly respected party girl poet Edna St.Vincent Millay. This incredibly lush theatre piece has seamlessly taken Millay’s poems and crafted them into a gripping story set during the period in her early life when her most iconic poem, “Renascence,” made her a phenomenon. We talk about nurturing the artistic process, cultivating works of passion, favorite cut songs, BEA ARTHUR, vulnerability in sharing your gifts with the world, leaving a legacy, The Girl in 14G, and how things that don’t go well have the ability to change your life for the better. And so much more! It is a pleasure to share this conversation with you. Renascence The Playhouse at Abrons Arts Center Oct 5th – November 17th Presented by Transport Group @carmiedean @transportgrp We are sooooooo excited to be sponsored by Pink Party Rosé!! What’s up everybody!? Dustin here delivering the newest episode of the IBC podcast! Episode 91. We are making our way closer and closer to the big 100. Can’t wait! All three hosts are here and we have a great episode in store. We begin with A LOT of shout outs, and jump right into the crazy week it has been in NFL free agency. We then recap our weekend down in San Diego for Churchill’s Renascence, list our top 3 favorite game shows, debate whether or not public funded places should have the option of flying the American flag, have an interesting discussion on the horrendous racist video from SAE at Oklahoma University, and finish the episode off with Sean’s topic on the Large Hadron Collider. It’s another fun episode filled with laughs, serious debate, and some science. Be sure to keep the conversations going on Facebook and Twitter, leave us a 5 star review on iTunes if you haven’t already, and get us feedback any way that you can. We always appreciate it. We hope you enjoyed this episode of the show and look forward to the discussion in the next few days. Enjoy!
