In the world of online marketing, a call to action is a common term that gets used in many different ways. But what is a call to action, and how can you use one (or more) to grow your side hustle? Let's dig in! What is a Call to Action A call to action, often called a CTA, is a line of text or an image that directs your audience to do something. It helps your readers, listeners, viewers, followers, or website visitors know what to do next once they engage with your content. It can be simple text that is linked to another page or website, a button, or just plain text that is not linked (and simply gives instructions of what to do). Common calls to action include “Buy Now” or “Learn More,” but there are literally countless ways that you can prompt people to take action on your content. Where to Use CTAs Your website. On different pages throughout your website you should have various calls to action directing people to where they should go next. On the Side Hustle Teachers website I have different calls to action on different pages. On the homepage options to “Learn More” about the education, and connection I offer, and to “Join the Group” for the Facebook community. On the Podcast and Blog page, the call to action is to engage with the content. Your content. Within your blog posts, podcast and video episodes (and the show notes), you want to give your audience calls to action that fit with the content. It might be a general call to action, like follow you on Instagram, or it could be more specific, like downloading a freebie related to the content. Landing pages. A landing page is typically a very simple page designed to capture email addresses in exchange for a freebie. When people land here it's often because they've clicked on one of your calls to action somewhere else. Therefore, this page will usually contain a form submission and a call to action to download the freebie. Social media. Since engagement is the name of the game on social, every post you share on social media should contain a call to action. Whether you're asking people to engage with your content, leave a comment, share a post, go to a page for a freebie, or click a link to buy from you. Email. When you send emails to your list each week you should include links to your weekly content and any other pertinent information.  How to Create Effective CTAs Use action words. When telling your audience what to do you have to tell them… you know… what to do. Use language that is clear and instructive so your audience doesn't have to guess what to do or what's going to happen when they do. Create urgency or FOMO. If there's a limited time to get your freebie or special offer, include that in your call to action. If there's no time limit, don't try to create false urgency. No one likes a phony. Instead, try to create a fear of missing out on a community or lesson. Make it easy to see. Whether it's through a contrasting color, larger text, white space, or word choice, make sure your call to action is noticeable and won't be missed by skimmers. What Not to Do with CTAs There are 3 common mistakes people make with their calls to action: Not using CTAs. Oftentimes new content creators hesitate to add CTAs because they feel like it's too bossy or spammy and it will annoy their audience. However, well thought out CTAs are considered helpful because they give people instructions for what to do next. They can choose to disregard the instructions or, if they enjoyed what you shared, they likely want to know what the next steps should be. Asking people to do too many things. Having too many different calls to action is overwhelming and confusing to your audience. When you ask people to do multiple things - follow you on social, share the post, subscribe to your email list, download a freebie, etc. - you reduce the chances of them taking any action at all.  Putting CTAs everywhere. Even if you have a single call to action, when your page is so full of buttons and links that it makes it visually confusing or difficult to engage with the content, it's very off-putting. Provide your audience a few places to take action, but remember that your purpose is first to serve.    A final word: Like most other things in business (and life), calls to action take testing, testing, and more testing. Every audience is different so you just have to try various strategies and see what works and what doesn't. This week, Holly is so happy to report that 1.) She did not overpack 2.) Her carefully planned outfits worked out perfectly, so she was confident at each and every event and 3.) Her new YSL shoes ripped her feet a new one with raging blisters. BUT, she did look AMAZEBALLS in her Saint Laurents. #duh Holly's first adventure into Podcast Convention Adventureland was steeped in uncertainty and anticipation. But, her actual experience turned out to be the BEST DAY EVER DOT COM! Holly tells us that met a SHIT TON of new besties. Podcast People are not basement trolls and are some of THE NICEST PEOPLE she has ever met. Being a podcaster is hard work, and so it was really great to compare notes and share sob stories with some of the best in the business. The best part? She felt great, she felt like she looked great, and she got a lot of compliments because she felt confident in clothes that fit her well and reflected her personality. So there you go. So let's go over that, again: She felt great in what she was wearing, because why? Because the clothes that she had fit her really well and reflected her personality. Did you take notes yet? Because the clothes that I had fit me really well and reflected my personality.”   [1:20] “I have a lot of new work coming up: all very different people, with the exact same problem: fashion and style is hard for them. It's too much work, and they don't know where to start. So they call me Yay! Really good on them! I mean, honestly, it takes a lot of guts to admit that you need help with something that you're not familiar with. And, then you reach out to the experts. In this case- that would be me!”   [1:35] “And for that convention, we're going to be broadcasting live and recording, because I'm going to her house next week. We are going to be taking pictures we're going to be doing videos, we're going to be cleaning out her closet. So stay tuned for that, because this is going to be an episode that you do not want to miss. Jessica is fun, funny and a hot mess all rolled up into one. But don't worry, Boo! The Holly Train is about to roll in on that one. It's going to be amazing. I'm going to be ripping her new one, pumping her up, building her up. Jessica has got great style. She just needs a little help. It's all good.”   [1:50] “I do want to say another reason why my outfits were so successful at the convention is because I did not overpack. I was not confused with a lot of choices because I already decided what I was going to wear each day and night. So I did not have a choice to like screw that up. I had to go with what I packed. And the most major packing mistake that most people make is just packing too much.”   [2:10] “I mean, for example, my new besties, Erica and Jamila from the podcast “Good Moms, Bad Choices.” I am not afraid to admit I am totally in love with them. They have a cannabis and sexuality podcast where they talk about all things that they need to make them better moms, like sex and pot. I love them and I went to their breakout session. I mean, I literally stopped them in their tracks and talked to them about their clothes because they looked so great. And of course they're from LA. So, they were super fashionable. We hit it off immediately. Love Them!”   [2:40] “I'm going to conclude with the fashion crimes that I did indeed see, which I would like to report were not from the convention. But, they were people that I saw at the airport, the Nashville airport. And don't worry, I have pictures of all these people.”   [3:05] “My friend and I have always talked about fashion and fashion crimes. We always say look, if your house is on fire, what is your go-to? What is the outfit you're going to put on to run out of the house? Is it pajamas pants? No, it's not. I'm probably gonna throw on some jeans and a T shirt. And a bra maybe, it probably depends on how much the house is really on fire, grab some tennis shoes and run. I'm not going to grab my pajama pants.”   [4:05] “I mean, she worked hard on this and everything did go together. But it was just a little fucking wackadoodle for the Nashville TSA line. But that was just my only complaint about her. I couldn't decide if I loved her or if I hated her, but I just thought she was unusual. And I did appreciate her being eccentric. I did get that, but we could have worked that outfit out a little bit better. But you know, again, I noticed her and she was definitely podcast worthy.”   [6:00] “But you know, those are the fashion crimes that I did see. And you know, it was a little scary. I'm not going to lie, but I lived. I worked it out. I loved it and I always enjoy. My favorite thing to do is to sit in the airport and people watch because people are dressed so terribly or they look great, or they look completely normal and fine. But what I've always wanted to do since I started my styling business, I've always wanted to set up an airport booth, like one of those kiosks next to the information booth, and give out free fashion advice because, dammit, people need that, especially in the airport.”   [8:30] “Let's reconvene next week while I will be at the podcast in the Queens home of Miss Jessica Kupferman, going through her shit, throwing it away, keeping the best of the best, making her look like a frickin' supermodel and I'm uncovering the beauty queen that she is, while really ripping her a new one, ‘cuz it's all right. Lately, I've been thinking about how branding, your reputation, and success go hand in hand. However, this is what I know for sure: Marketing is how you get leads, and branding is why they choose you! This is why branding is so important. Marketing and branding are so connected that if you mess one of them up, it will always affect the other one, and that's what I want to talk about today.  Your brand and your reputation can quickly become tainted, and these don't have to be significant events that cause the problem. And also what I do is really high-level.”  A lot of that is being stuck in beliefs that aren't necessarily true. First and foremost, #Bucksin6. Even though Olivia watched a movie Amy recommended instead. The movie was "Good on Paper" which is based on a true life story of Iliza Shlesinger, the standup comedian. Like she talks about in the movie... why is a persistent guy seen as a positive thing, whereas a persistent girl is seen as crazy? Not fair. We also discuss a lot of the red flags for the guy in the movie, including that she hadn't seen where he lived. You can learn a lot about a person based on where they live! After Olivia survives almost spewing kombucha out her nose, we talk about what's the difference between trusting your gut versus getting in your own way? Also, we determine that it's a big red flag if you never meet a guy's friends. Gotta pass the friend check! If you wanted to fast forward past spoilers, head to 23:09 (holy crap, we talk about that movie for a looooong time). I was my parent's worst nightmare...I was, and still am, a picky eater. I wish my parents knew my guest, Heidi Miller when I was growing up. When our kids don't eat what we want them to, eat too little, eat too much, don't want to sit at the table or get up constantly, we worry.
